FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
In my last greeting I spoke to our January snow/ice event. Now it’s April flooding; I look forward to the day when I will not have a weather calamity to talk about. In our recent rain event, the City of Pelham received somewhere between 6 and 7.5 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. To those adversely impacted by the high water, the amount of rain we received is of no consequence; the clean-up and the return of normalcy must now be the priority. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will soon open an office in the Hoover Public Safety Center located at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Valleydale Road. The total damage estimate for the flooding in our region was not large enough to warrant a FEMA response. The SBA will, however, activate an office for homeowners and businesses that suffered damage during the flood. For those with damage not covered by insurance or for those with exorbitant out-ofpocket expenses, the SBA will provide counseling to see if those affected may qualify for federal loans. At press time, we cannot provide an opening
date or phone number for the SBA office. When this information is made available, we will post it at www. pelhamonline.com. Again, I am thankful and appreciative for our Pelham First Responders. Our police and fire personnel were hypervigilant during the night and many of them remained on station until the danger had passed the following day. Afterward, our public works and street department personnel worked tirelessly, collecting and transporting 138 tons of flood debris. Thanks to all. Not so slick was our April heavy trash pick-up. In fact, it was pretty much a flop. I’ve met with all involved and we’ve pow-wowed about what went wrong. Because Pelham did not have a heavy trash pickup in October of last year, the crews were overwhelmed by the volume of waste placed curbside. They continued to work into Sunday until the rains came and then the flooding stopped everything. In the end, all trash was picked up. It wasn’t neat or timely, but it has resulted in a future waste management strategy that includes the creation of a City

of Pelham recycling center that will allow residents to recycle more than they are recycling now, and will also include the ability to haul away heavy trash and debris year-round. Stay tuned. Mark Twain once said, “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” The same can be said for Santa Claus and his traditional Christmas Eve visit to Pelham via Fire Truck. Santa’s Christmas Eve appearance in Pelham started as a gag; I should know, I was in on it. In 1979 a group of bored Firefighters put one of their own in a Santa suit, placed him on the tailboard and cruised up and down Highway 31. It was a hit, and every year afterward it got bigger and bigger. We used to cover the entire city with one truck in one hour. Now we are up to six trucks and six hours. Some of you may have noticed a Hoover Fire Truck hauling Santa last year; the year before it was Brierfield Fire Department helping us out. It comes down to this: we can no longer sustain the logistics associated with the delivery of Santa Claus to every street and every door in Pelham. Over the years I’ve suited up as Santa seven times. Trust me, it’s hard to be jolly when you’re riding around in sub-freezing temperatures and rain for six hours. So, Santa is still coming, but in a different way; a different, yet better, way.
How about a Santa Stop – Cookie Swap – Photo Op? By delivering Santa door-to-door, there is no incentive for any of us to leave our homes and celebrate with our friends and neighbors. With designated Santa-stops, you’ll be able to meet in predetermined locations and interface with your neighbors as Santa dismounts for some up-close-and personal face and photo time with the kids. The naysayers will cry and criticize the end of a tradition. Bah Humbug! I much prefer the beginning of a new tradition. The plan is to have the new Santa schedule, complete with the designated Santa Stops, printed in the Pelham City News beginning late summer. Everyone should have ample time to make the necessary changes to accommodate Jolly Old St. Nick this Christmas. Lastly, congratulations to Pelham’s first full-time Superintendent of Education, Dr. Scott Coefield. Dr. Coefield comes to us from the Oneonta City School System and was unanimously confirmed by the Pelham City School Board at the April 22 meeting. I look forward to working with Dr. Coefield as a partner and a neighbor. Welcome to Pelham, Dr. Coefield. I’ll see you around town. Yours Truly,
FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT HAYES It is almost summer, and this year, I think almost everyone is looking forward to putting both our winter and spring weather behind us. One hot summer day after another does not sound bad to me at this point. Please continue to help out our neighbors who are still working to recover from the recent flooding in any way that you can. Our summer can’t start without another high school graduation ceremony at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. I have attended my share of graduations and have always enjoyed seeing so many of the kids I watched grow up reach one of life’s major milestones. However, this year’s graduation ceremony will take on special meaning for me, personally, as my family gathers to watch my oldest son graduate from Pelham High School thirty years after I did. This night will be a major transition for Pelham High School, with Helena High School opening next year, and

many of the kids that I will always consider part of our community starting to attend a new school. I will certainly be sad about the end of an era, but I am also excited about the beginning of a new era with Pelham City Schools. The Pelham Board of Education has been working hard to officially start the new school system this summer, and we are excited about all of their accomplishments— including the recent hiring of Dr. Scott Coefield as our superintendent. While I am on the subject of schools, I have to say how much I enjoyed Youth Government Day again this year. It is always eye-opening to talk to a group of fifth-graders who will just tell you what they are thinking and answer questions without any agenda. Youth Government Day is supposed to be a chance for the kids to learn about local government, but we always seem to learn more from them than they learn from us. As we get into summer, many of you will notice the first major
street repaving project in Pelham in the last six years. We will spend almost $1.6 million to repave 23 streets. This will be the first step in an effort to catch up on these projects and start to address some of our critical infrastructure and traffic needs. We are also very excited about our renewed economic development efforts. Related to some of the economic development projects that we have been working on, we determined that our Industrial Development Board could not help us accomplish everything needed, and therefore have established a Commercial Development Authority (CDA) that will help us attract and recruit all of the different kinds of businesses that we need in Pelham. We sincerely appreciate Tracey Morant Adams, Clay Alford, Dr. Tim Alford, Lenny Glynn and Thomas Martin for
volunteering their time for our inaugural CDA. Although there will be many things to do this summer, I hope you will find time to attend Pelham’s Golden Jubilee, our city’s 50th anniversary celebration. Please see the article on the Jubilee on pages 24-25. This should be a great event for your whole family. Please be safe and watch out for the kids that are soon to be out in force playing in our neighborhoods. I hope you have a great summer and please remember to vote in the very important upcoming elections on June 3rd!

FROM PELHAM SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT RICK RHOADES
Several years ago, while still a college student, I began reading a book entitled Building a Championship Football Team. This book was all-engrossing for this young coaching “wanna-be,” and I soon learned that its contents had a lot more to do with organization, leadership and dealing with people than it did with the “Xs and Os” of the game of football. It was, incidentally, written by a coach by the name of Paul “Bear” Bryant—imagine that! The lessons gleaned from these pages helped to form the cornerstones of a 44-year coaching career, and have served me well in these last few months as a member of the Pelham Board of Education. In this letter, I would like to share with you, as they pertain to the development of our school system, some of the “lessons learned” from Coach Bryant’s writings. In a very real sense, we are building a championship team in Pelham—a championship EDUCATIONAL team. We want to prepare our
children to compete at a championship level in everything that they do! To do this, we must have: 1. Great LEADERSHIP 2. A sound PLAN 3. Unselfish TEAMWORK LEADERSHIP – All great organizations have dynamic leadership. These people of great vision, expert knowledge of their job responsibilities and a sincere interest in people are key components of every successful team. This is particularly important in our situation, as our job is to nurture young people and our school system is in its infancy. We have been extremely fortunate in this regard as our Interim Superintendent Tim Alford, Consultant Suzanne Freeman and CSFO Lauren Butts have formed an excellent leadership team, moving us ahead rapidly with great expertise. Because of their work, we were able to move ahead with total confidence in our search for a full time superintendent. As we began this search, the board was certain that we could attract outstanding candidates as we had the
4 PelhamOnline.com / Late Spring 2014
potential for a great school system as a major drawing card. On April 22, 2014 we named Dr. Scott Coefield the first Superintendent of the Pelham City School system. Although we had applications from many outstanding candidates, it became very clear that Dr. Coefield’s set of leadership skills and his commitment to Pelham’s young people were special. Combined with his work ethic and attention to detail, his candidacy rocketed to the top of our list. He will be the LEADER that we need at this most crucial period and for years to come. As important as leadership is, it is impossible to be successful without a sound, comprehensive PLAN. This plan must not only list the goals of our system, but also explain clearly the process for reaching these goals. Dr. Coefield has a clearly defined “9 Points of Excellence” for our schools. His plan is straightforward, all-encompassing, and will be an outstanding guide for our system’s development. In future letters, Dr. Coefield will outline these “9 Points” in detail. The last point to make regards TEAMWORK. Nothing of lasting greatness can be achieved without a unified group effort.
Each of us, whether we are students, teachers, administrators, parents, grandparents, business leaders or homeowners, has a vested interest in the success of our schools. The question is: What role will each of us play? There is no “sitting this one out,” because failure to be involved by our community will sentence our schools to mediocrity at best. Great school systems have great involvement from their surrounding community. This TEAMWORK is always the hallmark of outstanding schools. So, let’s get involved! If you have concerns, express them. If there are wonderful things that you observe or are aware of in our schools, compliment those involved. If there are events at the schools that you have an interest in, attend them. Your support, advice and comments will pay off in a big, big way for both our children and our system. The next few months will be exciting and challenging. Although there is much work to do, please know that we as your board remain committed to serving our wonderful city and its young people in this most important endeavor. Best Regards,
Rick

Dr. Scott Coefield, flanked by his wife Tammy and daughter Grace, happily greeted Pelham residents after being named Superintendent of Pelham City Schools.
Dr. Scott Coefield named superintendent of Pelham City Schools In a special called Board of Education meeting on April 22, the board voted unanimously to name Dr. Scott Coefield as the permanent Superintendent Of Education for Pelham City Schools. Currently the superintendent for Oneonta City Schools, Scott will work parttime there, and part-time with Interim Superintendent Dr. Tim Alford in Pelham until July 1, when he will fully take over the position here. “There is one candidate that was consistently at the forefront,” Board of Education President Rick Rhoades said during the board meeting. “We got consistently tremendous recommendations and information about Dr. Coefield, and I’m extremely excited he’s here this evening and I think our community will be as well.” After graduating from Auburn, Scott began his career as an educator in Cleburne County, where he worked for 20 years. Beginning as a history teacher, then taking on the roles of
football, basketball and baseball coach, he eventually moved up to become the principal of Fruithurst Elementary and then Cleburne County High. He served as elected Superintendent for Cleburne schools for four years before moving to the same role for Oneonta four and a half years ago. Scott scrutinized Pelham’s 2013 feasibility study while researching this position, and has already written up a rough draft for a school system budget. “In a lot of systems, the CSFO does the budget, but I want to be an active partner in that process,” he explained, saying he looks forward to working with Lauren Butts. “I want to make decisions that will help not only this school board, but also boards ten years down the line,” he continued. The short-term goal for the superintendent is simple: have everything ready to start off the new school year. PBOE members Dr. Barbara Regan and Angie Hester noted his organizational skills and knowledge of
administration from central office to school office will be very helpful as the school system is staffed. Scott’s long-term goals are just as simple as his short-term goals, but with more powerful meaning. He wants to build the capacity of Pelham schools, make the school name on each person’s shirt mean something to them, and build lasting relationships with the community. “I hope I build some friendships and personal relationships that will last forever,” he said. City Council President Rick Hayes said he was impressed by Scott’s resume and clear, simple goals for moving forward, as was Board President Rick Rhoades. Indeed, his resume is impressive. During his time in Cleburne, Scott worked at the State Department for a year and a half, and coached principals on the Alabama Reading Initiative under the Principal Coaching Initiative. While in Oneonta, he taught new superintendents in the School Superintendents of
Alabama’s Mentor and Executive Coaching Program. His plans for a K-12 verticallyaligned curriculum in Pelham will ensure learning is connected from one grade to the next. “We already have great teachers and high expectations, so we will hire a central office curriculum manager to work with principals of all the schools,” he explained. “We also need technology that is efficient, improves our students’ education, and is within budget,” Scott said, outlining his desire to bring more technology into Pelham schools to enhance learning. "We hit a home run with Scott, and you can quote me on that," PBOE member Brian Long stated, happy that Scott has experience in school construction as well. Scott’s wife Tammy is the principal of Asheville Elementary. Their daughter Grace is in 11th grade at Oneonta High School and their daughter Charlsie currently attends Auburn University.

City to repave 23 streets starting this summer During the April 7 city council meeting, the Pelham City Council approved a bid of almost $1.57 million to repave 23 city roads that are badly in need of repairs. Councilman Ron Scott said Pelham has not repaved any city roads in at least five years. “Let it be known that none of the streets that we live on are in this paving,” he laughed in the work
session prior to the meeting. Council President Rick Hayes also laughed before explaining Public Works employees helped decide which roads needed repaving first. He also said the city is saving around 15% on the project by working with an overall Shelby County repaving project. The city is able to pave about three more roads with the same amount of money. “This is a very large capital expenditure, but we all felt it was critical to start addressing some of our infrastructure issues. This is a first step,” he continued.
“We are putting money aside to do this on a regular basis.” The first 23 roads that will be repaved are Royal Circle, Royal Way, Martha Circle, Royal Court, Chandamont Circle, Yeager Parkway, Commerce Drive, Commerce Circle, Weatherly Way, Pemberton Place, Kings Crest Lane, McCain Parkway, Pardue Road, Monroe Drive, Industrial Park Drive, Parker Drive, Thames Court, Stuart Lane, Stonehaven Trail, Weatherly Club Drive, Bent Creek Drive, Bent Creek Way and Bent Creek Trace.

That location didn’t work out, so she scouted for another and found it in the heart of Pelham. You can ‘Like’ us on Facebook for updates.” Where did she come up with her idea for a Southern/ Caribbean cuisine mashup? “I wanted the southern taste for people to relate to, and the Caribbean dishes to add a new taste to the area,” she explained. Having a father from Trinidad influenced her choice of cuisine— “I grew up on this food, and my father is one of my mentors,” she said. “I hope to visit him there next year, and find ideas for new dishes.” Dawn lives in Pelham with her husband Sean, son Johannes, and daughter Amaya. Her daughter Korri lives in New York with her father. So where did the “Jake” in Jake’s Cafe come from? “It’s my father-in-law’s name, and when Amaya suggested it for the restaurant, it stuck,” she happily explained. Chasing the Dream: Chase Learning Center celebrates 20 years in Pelham On tempo, a dozen young scholars chant out the U.S. presidents, “George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James Polk.” They stop only when interrupted by a classmate, eager to share additional presidential facts. These are not words from a middle school classroom, but from a group of enthusiastic four- and five-year-olds at a Pelham daycare center. While most adults would struggle to list even the first 10 presidents, these students at Chase Learning Center can tell you the names of not just the presidents, but the names of those who were assassinated, along with the names of the assassins. (Let’s not forget, this information comes from people whose lives have spanned only one presidency.) Melanie Thomason, a counselor at Spain Park High School, is mom to Camille, one of those presidential prodigies as well as a Chase Learning Center student. As an educator, Melanie doesn’t take decisions on her children’s schooling lightly. “I just don’t worry that they are taken care of. The children are very prepared for kindergarten.”
Her 8-year-old son also attended Chase Learning Center. Director Lorrie P’Pool attributes the children’s progress to the early instruction Chase Learning Center provides. “People underestimate children. …I’m a huge believer in the importance of birth to five years. It is not a time to be wasted.” She and her husband, Chuck, put their money into that belief when they invested in property in Pelham and opened Chase Learning Center and Daycare in 1994. They purchased an existing daycare facility and planned to make major improvements to bring it up to standards, but their Small Business Administration loan application was denied. Just three days later, a tornado came through Pelham, causing considerable damage to their new business. As difficult as it was to pick up the pieces of their new daycare facility, the tornado qualified the P’Pools to receive a disaster relief loan and make the improvements they needed to get the daycare up to their standards. A few years later, they had to weather a storm of a different sort. In June of 2002, after being diagnosed with level four squamous cell carcinoma, Chuck was given six months
to live. With Lorrie at his side, he faced a radical head and neck surgery and bone grafts. Recovery was a long and difficult road, but he has been cancer free for nearly 12 years now. Beating the odds is all in a day’s work for this couple. They have owned and operated the expanded Chase Learning Center properties for 20 years. Only about a third of all small businesses last ten years or more, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not only did they survive—they are thriving. In fact, just over three years after opening, they were out of space and began work on a new building. Almost immediately after that building opened, there was a baby boom and they needed even more space. Lorrie met with a man who owned a building across the street and was able to work out a lease agreement. A few years later, he sold her the building. Today, she operates three buildings, one for each of her three specialties. There’s a Baby building, a Preschool building, and one specifically for After School care. Lorrie and Chuck named the daycare
after their son, Chase, now 21. Subsequently, they had a daughter, Taylor, now 19, and named their management company after her. Married for 28 years, they are residents of neighboring Helena. Lorrie has been involved in early childhood education since she was 20 years old and worked in the after school care program at Helena Elementary School. Under her guidance, that program grew quickly from 12 students to nearly a hundred. Seeing a need for summer care, she started a program for that. The Shelby County Board of Education decided, a few years later, to run the after school programs themselves. That’s when Lorrie and Chuck started looking into buying a daycare. The rest, as they say, is history. And it’s history worth repeating, if you ask the children and parents they serve. What Lorrie sees as her highest compliment is when children she has served grow up and return to the daycare with their own children. HAPPY 20th!

L-R: Legislators Cam Ward and Mike Hill; Dustin, Amy and Carly Chandler; legislators Jabo Waggoner and April Weaver; Mayor Gary Waters and legislator Mike Ball.
Senators and representatives visit Pelham to celebrate passage of Carly’s Law Last year, we reported on Pelham Police Officer Dustin Chandler’s skydiving event to raise money for research into CDKL5, a rare disorder with which his daughter Carly is afflicted. Among gastrointestinal problems, visual impairment and other medical issues, CDKL5 is most known for the frequent seizures it causes. The seizures can occur anywhere from several times a day to several times an hour, and really inhibit an individual’s ability to live. Dustin and his wife Amy have been searching for years to find any possible medical treatments to help Carly. “When you’ve got a child who has 10 seizures a day, you are going to look for anything you can to help that,” he explained. Last year, they learned about a substance, cannibanoid oil (CBD oil), that has been known to manage some of the symptoms of CDKL5. However, CBD oil is a derivative of the cannabis plant, and that has caused some states to prohibit the manufacture and possession of the oil. When the
Chandlers first began researching the oil, Alabama was one of the states to prohibit it. Dustin read stories about and talked to multiple families affected by CDKL5 who moved to states like Colorado, where the oil is legal. He understands where these families are coming from, saying, “When you have a child, you want to do everything you can to help them.” But he decided, rather than moving away, why not bring the oil here? He immediately began fighting Alabama’s laws that prevented the use of CBD oil as a medical treatment. “It doesn’t get people high; it has no street value. It’s almost like a ‘why not’ type of law,” he has explained many times now. “We just want the same options as people in other states. It’s tearing apart people’s families because they are having to move to Colorado.” He and Amy worked in true bipartisan fashion with Alabama Representatives Mike Hill, Patricia Todd and Allen Farley to pre-file a bill for last year’s legislative session to legalize the
medical testing of CBD oil to treat seizure disorders. According to Dustin’s research, testing in other states has had an 85 percent success rate in alleviating seizures in children with conditions like CDKL5. Governor Robert Bentley signed the bill to officially pass Carly’s Law on April 1 after it received unanimous approval from both the Alabama House and Senate in March. The bill allows for the clinical study of CBD oil and allots $1 million to fund research into the oil. As a surprise, Dustin, along with Amy and Carly, came to the Youth Government Day council meeting to talk to VES students about how they passed Carly’s Law. They wanted to explain the importance of believing in your ideas and working hard to achieve what you believe in, even when the road seems impossible. “You guys will have an idea, and it can be done. You have to have the vision for it, you have to work hard, and you’ve gotta get up and have the enthusiasm to do what you need to do,” Dustin said.
The Chandlers were not the only surprise guests in the audience. Senators Cam Ward and Jabo Waggoner, along with Representatives Mike Ball, Mike Hill and April Weaver joined them to address the VES students and thank Mayor Waters, the city council and the City of Pelham. “When you show us support, it just means the world to me,” Dustin said. “The battle was just getting people’s attention, letting them know what this bill was and what this bill wasn’t,” said Representative Hill. He said “the atmosphere in the statehouse changed” when the families of children who could be helped by cannibanoid oil took the stand. Senator Ward remarked on “how refreshing it is to see a group of people who are pushing a bill through because it is the right thing to do.” Representative Weaver agreed, saying, “This is absolutely politics at its best.” Hats off to our legislators, Officer Dustin Chandler and his wife, Amy, on a job well done. The real winners in this are all the families who can now gain relief.

Corporal Tyler Payne back from tour overseas stayed busy during his short visit: “food from home was the other one thing I thought about while I was overseas,” he laughed. He and wife Madison did for me, and their thoughts

But he doesn’t mind–serving has been on his mind most of his life. “My grandfather and dad were both in the military, and I wanted to do the 3rd generation thing,” he said. “I wanted to put in my four years and serve my time. Serving my country and being a part of something big is always something I’ve wanted to do.” After his four-year service commitment is fulfilled, he wants to continue his military career. “I will join the National Guard after my term with the Marines, so I can stay active in the military and still be able to hold a civilian job,” he said. He wants to look into working for Alabama Power or a

He was an English major before joining the Marines, and will either go back for that or a business degree. “I’ve always had a passion to write,” he said, explaining that while in Africa, he kept a blog that he wrote in constantly to share with his friends and family back home. He has excelled in the Marines, earning several promotions and awards thus far. He has proven himself as a true leader,” she gushed. “I truly appreciate all the prayers from the community while he was deployed. I am one happy mama now that he is back home on American soil!”

Tower of Power Band marches in NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade what they enjoy and discussed a little about life working in a Broadway musical. “This was really exciting to have the students get to speak to professional musicians and to learn a little about life on Broadway,” said PHS director Jeff Burnside. The parade was through the streets of NYC right down 5th Avenue. It might have been cold, but the students were prepared with leggings, hand warmers, and lots of layers. The streets were lined with New Yorkers who seemed very excited to have the band from Alabama visit and entertain them in their city. Roughly two million people lined the streets for the parade which was about thirty-five city blocks long. “It was exciting to see the students having fun marching through the streets of New York City in the parade,” said Mr. Burnside.

The cold weather didn’t put a damper on the fun the Pelham High School Tower of Power Marching Band recently had on its visit to New York City. The band left Alabama March 15 ready for a great trip sightseeing in New York City along with marching in the New York City St Patrick’s Day parade. The students had the opportunity to visit several tourist spots such as Central Park, Ellis Island, Rockefeller Center and the 911 memorial. They also were treated to two musicals to see some professional musicians on Broadway. The students enjoyed the Disney musical Newsies and the Broadway award-winning show Jersey Boys. After Jersey Boys, the students and chaperones had the opportunity to meet with the musicians and many of the actors after the show to participate in a Q and A session. The musicians encouraged the students to work hard at

The Pelham Board of Education keeps growing all the time. Pam Phifer, Central Office Bookkeeper, is the school system's newest addition. Hired in March; she has been very busy since she started. She enjoys being a part of things so early on in the development of the school system, because it means there are more opportunities for her to help. "I'm great at being a a Flunkey Monkey," she joked. "We bought some pens and copy paper today. We need to stock the entire office!" That we do, and Pam is the newest commodity in stock. “She’ll be a great addition to our staff,” Pelham Board of Education President Rick Rhoades said. “It’s so encouraging to see the caliber of people who want to be part of our school system.” We join Rick in saying welcome to Pelham, Pam!

information, applicant files for school or office positions, and general emails to the system. She will be in charge of accounts payable for the Central Office and assist the local school bookkeepers for the Pelham school district. Originally from Hueytown, Pam graduated from Bessemer Academy and attended the University of Alabama. She
married Terry Phifer, a Line Crew Foreman with Alabama Power. The pair have two sons, Daniel, who works for Boeing as an Electrical Engineer, and Adam, who also works for Alabama Power, as an Apprentice Lineman. When the boys were small, and attending Mother’s Day Out in Midfield, Pam got into bookkeeping at the Midfield Board of Education Central Office. There, she worked with Terry's mother, Elsie Phifer, who was the Child Nutrition Director. From Midfield, Pam moved to Hoover High School as well as Deer Valley Elementary before moving to be a Central Office Bookkeeper once again, in Homewood. "I enjoy bookkeeping because there is always a concrete answer for everything," Pam said.

KEYSTONE—then and now by A.J. Wright If you asked people in our area “What do you know about Keystone?” most who could answer at all would probably mention Keystone Plaza, the shopping strip along U.S. Highway 31 at the PelhamAlabaster line. Yet Keystone was once a thriving little community between those two towns. In the late 1890s, Fred Hardy constructed kilns for a lime plant and named it Keystone Lime Plant. The operation grew and soon, enough men were employed that a small community developed around the plant. The place, known originally as Hardyville, included grocery and dry goods stores, a barber shop and the plant’s offices. A post office opened in 1898 and Hardy served as its first postmaster. Hardy soon sold the plant, and by 1904, the post office
served a community called Keystone. The plant burned in 1923, but reopened on a limited basis. Mortar was made during World War II but the entire plant closed for good in 1965. The community remained but the post office closed in 1972. The Alabama Almanac and Book of Facts 1955-56 gave a few more details about Keystone. A telegraph office operated in the community at that time. E.L. Purdy was Superintendent of the Keystone Lime Works, Inc., plant; and G.W. Bentley was Foreman. Lime works also operated in the nearby
communities of Landmark, Saginaw, Roberta and Pelham. A 1937 state highway map show communities named Keystone and Hardy between
Pelham and Alabaster. I wonder what the story is for Wilmay, south of Alabaster? No doubt another Shelby County community absorbed by growth.

VES students raise $3600 for Jump Rope for Heart
Anyone who attended public school in the past three decades is likely to have fond memories of participating in Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) during American Heart Month. What’s more fun than learning cool jump rope tricks, raising money for the American Heart Association (AHA) and winning cool prizes for it? This February, Valley Elementary students raised $3,600 in donations for the program. “There was a lot of
student participation this year,” said VES PE teacher Susan Jackson. The program was created in 1978 by a PE teacher in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to promote healthy, fun exercise in elementary school children. 2014 is the 35th anniversary of the program, meaning this year, VES students raised more than $100 for each year that the program has existed. Susan and Ginger Aaron, the other PE teacher at VES,
facilitate JRFH each year, teaching students about heart health for about a month prior to the event. They show how the heart functions, discuss what can cause a heart attack and explain how to have a healthy heart through exercising and eating healthy foods. They also turn the gym into a “Journey Through The Heart” with an obstacle course made similar to the chambers of the heart. “The students learn better when they’re moving and learning,” Susan explained. The kids solicit donations from their families, neighbors, church friends, and anyone else they can find who will donate, with all proceeds benefitting AHA. Then, on February 17, all students were invited to bring
their parents to come jump rope with them. “We like to have the parent involvement,” Susan said. That day, she and Ginger set up several short and long-rope stations, as well as a healthy snack station (with options like an apple with Gatorade or water) in the gym. Having parents at school jumping with their kids and playing upbeat music to keep everyone excited makes the day feel like a party, Ginger said. The normal PE curriculum at VES also takes advantage of the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) program, so it’s clear Susan and Ginger care about student health. Susan hopes the message of these programs sticks with the students, “If we start at this age, hopefully they’ll retain that knowledge and love of exercise, and be healthy for a lifetime.”
Church of the Highlands - Commercial Beautification Award winner The Church of the Highlands Riverchase Campus was photographed during the eyecatching peak of the blooming of Red Emperor tulips contrasted with yellow pansies below. “We feel that members and visitors appreciate us making our campuses beautiful and inviting,” said Ronnie Bennett, Executive Administrator for the Church of the Highlands. The various flower beds that surround the building are changed seasonally year round. “For the most part,” Bennett said, “we let Landscape Services, the company that maintains our campuses, give us suggestions for our landscape plan at the Riverchase campus. Some of the landscape elements are required by the city code.” Bennett added that plans for the recent new property addition are just underway and they have not discussed potential landscaping yet.
“You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” Bennett emphasized. “If the building and grounds are neat, clean and inviting, it makes visitors comfortable and shows that we have a commitment to excellence in all we do.”

Shelby County Developer – Steve Mobley From humble beginnings came a man of great intensity and vision. Steve Mobley, developer of Ballantrae and many other subdivisions in Shelby County, spent his early years in one of the county’s first planned communities. His parents and grandparents worked for the Buck Creek Cotton Mills, formerly the Siluria Cotton Mill Company, and the family lived in the housing village there. His father and uncle even played for the Buck Creek Millers, the Mill’s semi-pro baseball team. His parents both attended (then) Thompson School. He moved out of Shelby County when a mill shutdown forced the family
to find work at Avondale Mills in Birmingham. Having earned an undergraduate degree at
Auburn, then a law degree at Alabama, he spent time in Texas, Colorado, and Montana. In Montana, he met his wife, Robin, and brought her to Birmingham, where he started his own residential real estate development company. Mobley has been an active part of the growth of Pelham and Helena since 1987 when he started Mobley Development. Among the most noted of his projects is Pelham’s Ballantrae, named after a small town in Scotland, regarded as the birthplace of golf. The 2000-acre Ballantrae development features an awardwinning golf course designed by world-renowned golf course architect Bob Cupp. Since work began in 2002, over 700 homes have been built, with an additional 800 lots developed. While it was approved for 4,000 homes, Mobley says he will not allow that many to be built out of respect for the land. “We try to work with the topography of the land as it exists and develop homes that are compatible. a buffer of natural vegetation,” adds Mobley. “Ballantrae was designed for and offers homes for a wide range of families with homes priced from the low 200s to over a million dollars.” Ballantrae also offers lakes, parks, nature trails and a fitness center for its residents. “Communities are like children,” says Mobley. “They are all special. However, I would say that Ballantrae represents the finest work done by the people who work for Mobley Development.” In addition to the expansive Ballantrae, Mobley developed the neighborhoods of Heather Ridge, Stonehaven, Ivy Brook, Cedar Cove, and Indiancreek in Pelham and Falliston in Helena. RMS students win at Alabama Science & Engineering Fair In September, Trish Bogdanchik teaches her 8th grade class at Riverchase Middle School about the scientific method. Each student comes up with a project to present at the school’s science fair in January. The winning projects at the school level advance to the regional Alabama Science and Engineering Fair at UAB. Winners there move on to the state level, at UAH. This year, thanks to the growing interest in science at RMS, three 8th graders took projects all the way to UAH. “The RMS science program is fantastic; it’s grown so much over the past three years. The schoolwide science fair is amazing, and we now have a Science Olympiad team,” said Trish, who also runs a science study hall. Student Caleb Page took third place in the Electricity and
Magnetism division at the regional fair with his project, “Electric Motor Conductivity.” His experiment used a multimeter to measure how much voltage is drained away from an electric motor when using different-sized coils. Jacob Colvert and Robert Plummer took 1st place in Energy and Transportation Science division at the regional fair for their project, “How a Spoiler Affects the Speed and Handling of a Car.” Their research took them to Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, where they talked to car expert and Porsche race car driver Alec Van Ryan to learn about the physics of racing. At the state level, Jacob and Robert’s as well as Caleb’s projects received honorable mentions in the Engineering category. Caleb
also received first place in a special award category, sponsored by the Math and Science Committee of UAH’s Alpha Kappa Alpha: Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter. Both projects have been greenlighted by ASEF officials to return to next year’s fair. Few worthy projects are deemed developed enough to allow the students to continue experimenting and bring back a continued project the next year, so this is an honor for the students. “I want to try to improve my project some more for next year,” Caleb said enthusiastically.
Caleb, who wants to continue to study engineering, leans toward mechanical engineering as a possible career path. Robert is very interested in the engineering side of cars, and Jacob thinks he has a lot more to learn on a lot of subjects before he will know what he wants to do. “This administration at Riverchase is so supportive of academics and new science initiatives. We couldn’t have done this without them,” said Trish. Congratulations to all. We’ll keep an eye out for next year!

RMS Track teams sweep Southern Conference Championship Held on April 10 at Pelham High School, the Southern Conference Middle School Track and Field Championship featured six schools with dozens of young athletes taking part in nearly 30 events. The RMS Girls Track Team won the women’s championship with 134 points, a whopping 23 points higher than #2 Briarwood Christian Junior High. The RMS Boys Track Team finished the men’s championship in a close 2nd place, only 6.5 points behind frontrunner Briarwood. The girls already had a good season up to the championship, placing 3rd in both Vestavia’s King of the Mountain track meet and the Homewood Middle School Invitational earlier this season. "We had a small team of girls this year and their success was
the result of months of hard work. Many of the girls also participated on our Indoor Track Team and have been training since November," said Coach Nathan Collins. At the Southern Conference MS Championship: Katie Strozier took 1st place in the 400 meter dash, with Emma Hammett taking 2nd in that event. Emma also took 1st place in the 300 meter hurdles. Alex Wilkins took 1st place in the triple jump, and 3rd place in both the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run. Dunia Perez took 2nd place on the high jump, with Sarah Guthrie taking 3rd in that event. Sarah also took 2nd place on the triple jump behind Alex. Ayala Seaborn has a great arm, because she took 1st

place on the discus throw and 2nd place on the shot put. Katie and Emma were joined by Ashley Lewis-Richardson and Layla Al-Hasnawi to form the RMS Girls 4 x 400 Meter Relay Team, which took 1st place. Other team members Jessica Bui, Ryleigh Chambers, Jazmin Munoz, Mia Palmer, Lawsie Rogers, Ayala Seaborn, Carys Stubbs, Reagan Wright and Jaylin Young also did well in their events. "Although not everyone on the team placed in the top three
in their event, 12 team members scored points and contributed to the win," Coach Collins explained. "This is the third championship that the RMS Girls Track and Field team has won in the past three years." "It is always a pleasure to work with these girls, Coach Lynn Mayes Orms, and Coach Frank Price," he continued. With a "track record" like this, we need to keep a lookout for these talented athletes to push the envelope at PHS in the coming years.

PHS Color Guard named best in Alabama at Southeastern CG Championships After a busy season of competitions, the Pelham High School Winterguard teams finished this year with some great performances at the Southeastern Color Guard Championships. The teams traveled to Nashville to compete against approximately 80 teams from across Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Performing at Belmont University arena, they made PHS proud. The Junior Varsity team worked hard on their show
entitled “Catch the Sun” and placed third in their final competition of the season. The Varsity team competed with their routine entitled “Springtime’s Song.” As awards were being finalized, they were about to announce the final two places in the varsity class. They announced that there was only 1/10 of a point difference in first and second place. This just showed what a stiff competition this can be for this group of girls. In the end, the varsity team ended up being named 1st place winners and Alabama State

Residential Beautification Award 216 Wild Timber Parkway Janey and Norman Patty appreciate their quiet oasis in the Wild Timber neighborhood where they and their cat, Willow, watch intermittent visits from deer, wild turkeys and the occasional vulture. “Once four cows wandered into our yard—we thought they had gotten loose from the petting zoo, but they belonged to a farm over on Hwy 35. They had left their home turf the past December and had been wandering across Oak Mountain for four months. They enjoyed
our grass, then their owner reclaimed them,” Janey recalls. In the front yard, beds of loropetalum balance the entryway. Crape myrtles along the driveway will bring splendid color come summer, while the back yard now blooms with white azaleas and Siberian iris. A red Japanese maple, a gift from friends when they first moved in, warms with sunlight. A bed lined with stones helps with the water runoff through the backyard. “We love to sit out in the back and enjoy the quiet; it’s very peaceful,” said Janey. “We enjoy the yard but we depend on Bryan Reed of Reed’s Lawn Care Service & Landscape in Pelham for its upkeep,” Norman added. Severe flooding ravages unsuspecting Pelham residents For many, the heavy rain from the severe thunderstorms the night of April 7th came as a complete surprise—as did the news that several residential areas, like Chandalar Court, Creekview Drive and Greenpark South, were located on a flood
plane. Residents there woke in the early morning to their townhomes filling with water. The Pelham Police and Fire Departments spent much of the morning using boats and fourwheel-drive vehicles to rescue people stranded in their flooded homes and bring them to dry ground. But being rescued was the least of their worries. Many now have to deal with soaked basements, waterlogged furniture, and lost possessions, not to mention finding a place to live that is habitable. According to Mayor Waters, 174 citizens (and 4 dogs) who were more informed about the possibility of flooding came to stay overnight in a makeshift shelter at the Pelham Police Headquarters. “Last night’s bad weather made for a long night for many; including those who sought shelter with us,” he said the next day. “I can’t say it was the lap of luxury, but it was safe and
accommodating.” Many area businesses were also added to the list of people affected and property damaged by this storm. But businesses may have help coming: the overall damage in the city was deemed dire enough to warrant help through low interest rate loans from the U.S. Small Business Association The photos left and above, courtesy Mayor Waters, show the flooded houses on (SBA). Ribbon Cut for Valley Elementary Adaptive Playground Standing behind a long expanse of yellow ribbon, VES students used their Fiskars scissors, with help as needed, to be a part of the official opening of their new Adaptive Playground. “Karen Powell and Lee Ann Ratcliff started this project many years ago when they were co-PTO presidents and did an initial fundraiser that resulted in the concrete slab and rubber matting,” said Kelly Windham, current PTO co-president with Beth Bryan. She continued, “This year, we realized that we had overlooked this area and it became our priority to do better for our children with special needs.” “We upgraded the Little Tykes toys and then began sending letters out to local businesses to solicit donations. Everyone has been very gracious.” Lowrey Young, a member of
Boy Scout Troop 367, made additional safety and visual improvements to the playground as his Eagle Scout project. “The inspiration to take this on came as I realized I wanted to give back to this school, where my mother, Connie Young, has worked for nine years. And, I attended VES myself.” Working every day during spring break, Lowrey says 150-200 man-hours were logged on the project. “Every day when my mother comes home and tells me how much the children have enjoyed the playground, it is very gratifying to me,” he added. Principal Linda Campanotta and VicePrincipal John Vincent hosted a reception on April 28 attended by
school board members and Interim Superintendent Tim Alford where they thanked and honored all donors, volunteers and helping hands. Donors include: State Rep Mary Sue McClurkin Sen. Jabo Waggoner Eddie Lumpkin (Metro Mini Storage) Susan Schein

Singles champion Laura Siegemund, center, poses for a picture with her Pelham host family of four years– Thomas, Lori, Elaina and Kristina LaBoone.
Legacy Federal Credit Union Women’s $25,000 Challenger USTA Pro Tennis Tournament Hosted at Pelham Racquet Club for 11th year Nearly 100 female tennis professionals from more than 15 different countries across the world came together to compete at the Pelham Racquet Club for the 11th annual Legacy Federal Credit Union $25,000 Challenger the week of April 9. Along with a week of worldclass tennis matches, the challenger also included Rick & Bubba Kids’ Night, which included an afternoon of free children’s tennis workshops with some of the athletes. Bill “Bubba” Bussey has always been a strong supporter of PRC and was a sponsor for this tournament. The doubles side of the tourney matched 32 of the highclass visiting athletes against one another. The lengthy final doubles match pitted Danielle Lao and Keri Wong, both from the US, against #3 seeded Dia Evtimova and Ilona Kremen, who are from Bulgaria and Belarus respectively. Their first set ended 1-6, the second tied up the match with a score of 6-4, and the match-winning set went to Danielle and Keri, 1-0 (7). Danielle, who calls Arcadia, California home, first played tennis at age seven on a family vacation in Mexico. After many years of lessons, practice and
tournaments, she was granted a scholarship to play on the Women’s Tennis Team for the University of Southern California. She became captain her senior year and went AllAmerican twice. In 2013, the now 22-year-old wrote a memoir called The Invaluable Experience about her life as she played tennis in college. Keri, who hails from Jackson, Mississippi, received the Bill Ozaki Sportsmanship Award while playing in high school, and attended the prestigious Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She joined the Clemson Women’s Tennis Team for four years before going pro. The 24-yearold is also a two-time (doubles) All-American, as well as a twotime All-ACC selection. In this Legacy Challenger, the pair seemed to come out of nowhere, beating #1 seed pair Madison Brengle/Allie Will (both also from the US) in the quarterfinals before taking on, and beating, the #3 seeded team in the finals. The singles side of the tournament brought together 64 women from more than 15 different countries. The singles final match pitted #8 seed Laura Siegemund against Kazakistan
native Yulia Putintseva. Laura, a German native, defeated Yulia in just two rapid-fire sets, which ended 6-1 and 6-4. Laura, who is from Metzingen originally, has been playing tennis since she was 3 years old. “My mom is a tennis nut, but my parents never played professionally, just as a hobby. My brother Arlen played, too, so I just fell into it,” the 26-yearold explained. “It was a social, fun thing for my family to do when we were little.” She began playing tourneys in the US in 2009, coming to Pelham in 2010, where she found herself at PRC with nowhere to stay. She saw Elaina and Kristina LaBoone, who play on the PHS tennis team, hitting some balls around one of the courts. Laura approached their mother, Lori, to ask if she knew someone who would let her stay. Little did she know Lori had spent time in Germany as an exchange student, and they hit it off immediately. “Talking with her gives me a chance to practice my German,” Lori laughed. Her husband Thomas explained that although they only see Laura once a year, they speak with her often over email and Facebook. After winning the tournament, Laura’s request
was to go with the family to Five Guys Burgers and Fries in celebration. “I want to thank the LaBoone family for hosting me for the past four years,” she said. Thanks go out to all who had a hand in this year’s tournament, from title sponsors Legacy Community Federal Credit Union and The Rick & Bubba Show, to the Alabama Sports Foundation, Altec, Matthew D. Litz, Dr. Roderick White of Shelby County Chiropractic, Wilson, Comfort Suites, Resort Quest, AL Crown, Player’s Choice, Dr. Michael Patterson with the Lemak Sports Group, Tracy Causey with the Drayer Physical Therapy Institute, Kai’s Koffee, Texas Roadhouse, Coke, Southern Natural Soap, Greg Butke with Citgo, Southern USTA, Gamma Sports, Joe’s Italian, Taziki’s and Roly Poly... thank you for your support. To Mayor Waters and the City Council, Chaney Mills and all the many staff members, pros and volunteers at the Pelham Racquet Club, and Park and Rec Director Billy Crandall and his crew, all of whom stepped up to ensure everyone had a terrific experience, the city is extremely grateful. See you Next year at the 2015 Women’s $25K Challenger!

Santa Claus is coming to town in a whole new way The Pelham Fire Department is revising the Santa Routes for this coming Christmas Eve. We are improving on how all the little boys and girls can see Santa Claus by providing “Santa Stops” throughout the city. By providing these Santa Stops, we will be letting the children see him, talk to him, have photo
opportunities with him, and let Santa know about any last Christmas wishes before their bedtime. In order for this to be better than ever before, the Pelham Fire Department needs your help by giving us feedback on where the Santa Stops should be located. Please submit your feedback

Students take over the city for Youth Government Day For many Pelham officials, Youth Government Day is their favorite work day of the year. Each April, a group of precocious students from Valley Intermediate are elected as Youth mayor, city council and department heads by their peers. On Youth Government Day, these "officials" follow their adult counterparts around to learn what each person does for the city. While they have one-on-one time, the rest of the fifth-graders tour the city council building and chambers, police department, fire department, revenue department, water works, library and court to learn how local government works on a daily basis. This year's youth mayor was the enthusiastic Emma McKenney. Jackson Maxwell was elected city council president, with Jesus Luna, Ariana Smith, Ceci Angel and Rhea Rajkumar serving as council members, and Michel Cruz as city clerk. Kennedi Adamson served as the police chief, Thomas
Hays as the fire chief, Amont Davis as fire marshal, Aubrey Roberts as director of human resources, Emma Bjornstad as city engineer, Kori Ingram as the building official and Jayden Ludwig was the library director. Abby Camlic served as the director of Ballantrae Golf Club, Aly Kate Ratcliff as president of the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, Eli Chamber as the director of parks and recreation, Jaley Davis as the director of public works, Kenden Maddox as the finance director, Jessie Hall as the court administrator and clerk and Macy Johnson was the director of the Pelham Civic Complex. This year, two new roles were added: the student interim superintendent of Pelham City Schools was Cami Weaver, and the Pelham Board of Education president was Tanner Simmons. Interim Superintendent Dr. Tim Alford and PBOE President Rick Rhoades were excited to spend the day with some of Pelham's students and get some

"insider knowledge" on what happens in Pelham schools. During the regularly scheduled city council meeting, which the Youth Government is require to attend, Police Officer Dustin Chandler brought a surprise of Rep. April Weaver, Sen. Cam Ward, Rep. Mike Ball and Rep. Paul DeMarco. They discussed the importance of believing in their ideas, and explained how they worked together to pass Carly's Law. The Youth City Council, mayor and clerk then held their own council meeting to a packed house. They passed resolutions to bring a recycling program to all Pelham City Schools, raise littering fines to $1000 accompanied by two hours of community service, establish an Adopt-A-Street program in the city similar to the state's AdoptA-Mile program, and form a flood migration plan to protect and assist residents. They also expressed a desire for better air conditioning and air fresheners for the locker room at RMS.
Some youth department heads had ideas too, like Kennedi, who spent the morning with Police Chief Tommy Thomas. "I would like to recommend adding more female officers and employees to the police force," Kennedi suggested. Much like last year's Youth Government Council— this group had real concerns! "This is one of the best, if not the best, groups of kids we've had come through the Youth Government Day program," Councilman Maurice Mercer said. "You know that the future is in great hands with young minds like these." City Council President Rick Hayes reiterated that the city leaders always learn just as much about what goes on in the schools as the children learn about how the city works. He and many others thanked VES Principal Robyn Hollingsworth for bringing her bright young students to inform them and liven up their Monday.
The
Future is in Good Hands
With Pelham High School ’ s Graduates of 2014
Each year, the Senior Counselor (Laura Cochran) and staff select six Pelham High School seniors that embody the traits that make them optimal representatives of their graduating class as well as their community. The following students share their favorite PHS memories and future plans. The day has finally arrived, and we want to commend each and every graduate on this major milestone—earning their high school diploma. Most importantly, we wish the Class of 2014 a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our (graduation) caps are off to you—Pelham High School Class of 2014! Hannah Hayes (daughter of Danny and Wendy Hayes): Hannah’s most momentous occasion at PHS was cheering on the football team on Friday nights. “I enjoy watching our community and students get into the Panther spirit,” she said. “The people who have had the biggest influence on my life are my parents, because they have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and put my heart into everything I do.” Her favorite class was math, because she enjoys learning new concepts and solving problems. “My favorite teacher was Mrs. Ross because we have developed a strong relationship throughout my four years being in SGA, and she is a positive role model.” Hannah will attend Auburn University to will pursue a degree in nursing. “I envision myself being a nurse anesthetist where I can give back to the community and help others.” The one thing she would change about high school is the split between Pelham and Helena. “My friends from Helena made my senior year much more enjoyable and I wish the class of 2015 could experience the same.” Her advice to freshmen is to get involved at school and attend as many events as possible. “It is important to enjoy this time in life before reality sets in!” In 20 years, she sees herself living in California pursuing her dreams and career. Ben Smith (son of Tracy and Gary Farragut): The highlight of Ben’s career at PHS was being a part of two playoff football teams, with the standout moment being when he scored his first varsity touchdown. “The people who have had the biggest influence on my life are my parents, because they have always been the most supportive and have always pushed me to do my best.” His favorite teacher also taught his favorite class, Ms. Nelson’s freshman biology. “It was both exciting and educational,” he said. He will attend UAB in the fall and wants to pursue a degree in business. “I envision myself having a career in insurance.” If Ben could change anything about high school, he says, “I would make high school more career ready, offering more hands-on career classes.” His advice to freshmen is to always work hard but still have fun, and to enjoy in while it lasts. In 20 years, he says he would like to be working in an insurance firm. Caitland Smith (daughter of Ted Smith and Wendy Adams): The highlight of Caitland’s PHS career was winning all of her individual events at outdoor state track competition last year. “It was the perfect ending to my season, because I felt like I had worked so hard for months to achieve it.” Her grandmother has had the biggest influence on her life. “She has always inspired me. She is a model of discipline, courage, and strength; she has used all of these qualities to raise twelve children.” Her favorite class was freshman geometry because they were always solving fun problems. “My favorite teacher was Mrs. Burnett because she made English come alive.” She will attend the University of Texas in Austin, and plans on majoring in nutritional sciences. “I also hope to run professionally after college, but if my plans change, I hope to become a doctor. I would love to work as a health care provider in prison systems.” Her one change for PHS: “I would have loved to have pep rallies my senior year. It’s always a great time to bring the school and community together. Also, everyone has a great time supporting our sports teams.” Her advice to freshmen is to take advantage of all the opportunities they have to grow. “Don’t limit yourself. This is the time to explore what you like and enjoy yourself. Take all the classes that interest and challenge you, and get involved in activities that interest you as well.” In 20 years, she sees herself married with two children living in Austin. “I would love to have my own club track team.”
Olivia King (daughter of Stacey King and James King): Olivia’s favorite PHS memory was the senior night football game. “This year was the first year I got to be in the stands with my graduating class because I was in band the first three years of high school. Not only was it one of the last football games of the season, it was also the last Pelham/Helena Senior Night together, and being a part of that was something truly special in my eyes.” The the biggest influence on her life is her dance teacher, Jennifer Friedman. “She pushed me to always try my hardest and to not give up on things I love doing. She’s helped me become the person I am today and taught me a lot about myself.” She enjoyed all of her English classes throughout high school, because they gave her the opportunity to read literature of all kinds and to also better her writing skills. “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Murray, because she has compassion for her students and has shown me how the decisions you make in high school affect your life in the future.” She will attend UAB in the fall. “I envision myself either working with kids in some way, in education or social work, or doing something like public relations. I know for sure my career will involve personal interaction with people on a daily basis, not something where I’m stuck behind a desk.” She would like to help to improve freshmen’s image of what high school is really like by reducing their anxiety over the transition from middle school to high school. “I want them to understand that high school is a new start, and a time to create lasting memories and friendships.” Her advice to freshmen is to get involved in clubs and organizations and to make the most out of every moment in high school. “Enjoy high school and don’t wish those four years away, because before you know it, it will be over.” In 20 years, she sees herself having a family of her own in a steady career that she enjoys. William Wallace (son of Jill and Tim Wallace): Will’s most momentous occasion at PHS was surviving January’s epic snow day. “The people who have had the biggest influence on my life are my parents.” His favorite class was with his favorite teacher: freshmen English with Mrs. Burnett. “I will be attending Auburn University for college and will be pursing a degree in mechanical engineering, because I envision myself having a career in engineering.” If he could change anything about high school, he says he would let sophomores have parking spots. “My advice to those just beginning their high school careers is to start your freshmen year strong and make good grades.” He says in 20 years he would like to have a family and be a successful engineer. Nick Hill (son of Wayne and Susan Hill): Nick’s favorite experience at PHS was “conducting each and every halftime show for the Tower of Power Marching Band during my junior and senior seasons, while also having the honor of being the last Head Drum Major before the Pelham/Helena split.” His parents are the biggest influence on his life because of their support and guidance. “Without them, I would not be on the path to greatness.” His favorite class was sophomore honors history class with Mrs. Butler, and his favorite teacher is his band director of four years, Mr. Burnside. He will be attending the University of Alabama, pursuing a double major in finance and accounting. “I hope to be a financial analyst, and later become a financial manager or CFO for a major corporation.” If he could change anything about high school, he would like school to start later. “My advise to those just beginning high school is to stay focused on your academics, and don’t let the distractions of high school hold you back from enjoying it.” In 20 years, he can see himself married with children in a nice house as a successful CFO.
