from the MAYOR’S Desk

Greetings, Congratulations to our 2013 Pelham High School Graduates. I appreciate you allowing me to be part of a commencement ceremony that was memorable, fun and well done. Further congratulations go to our Pelham Panther Baseball Team, the new State of Alabama 6A Champions. I would like to thank the Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge for again bringing a wonderful Flag Day tribute to the Pelham Civic

Complex & Ice Arena. It was a touching, informative event that celebrated the history of our flag and our American heritage. Rain did not allow us to end the event with the scheduled flag retirement ceremony. This solemn event was rescheduled for July 4th (as this goes to press) and conducted by BSA Troop 404 at the pavilion at Pelham City Park. Since the 4th will probably be past by the time you receive this in the mail, I hope everybody

had a wonderful 4th of July! Now for the big question: Should the City of Pelham form its own school system? A feasibility study has been completed, presented and two public hearings held. Has your opinion been heard? As this issue goes to press, there is a Town Hall meeting scheduled for July 8th, at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena, at 7:00pm. (We posted this information on our web page and have asked others to spread the word, as it is not certain this edition will reach everyone in time due to the July 4th holiday falling mid-week). The education issue does not only affect those children of school age; THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE OF INTEREST TO EVERYONE WHO

LIVES AND CONDUCTS BUSINESS IN PELHAM. Municipal government works best when the citizens become active participants. Don’t defer your civic responsibility; it’s up to you. Lastly, come ‘Pelabrate’ with us! Don’t forget, our first ever citywide ‘PELHAMBRATION’ will be held at our Civic Complex & Ice Arena Saturday, July 13th. There is FREE admission, FREE entertainment, FREE ice-skating and other FREE activities for the kids. The festivities will begin at 11:00am, and I will be in the dunking booth at 2:00pm; come take a free shot and put your Mayor in the water. I dare you. Gary W. Waters Mayor

(More on page 19.)

Students from Valley Intermediate took over the city for a day in April on Youth Government Day. Rest assured your City government has these students in mind as we deliberate over important questions concerning the future of Pelham. Students elected their ‘office holders’ who then shadowed their official counterparts for a day learning how their city conducts its business. The day culminated with their own council meeting where student department heads made their requests and suggestions known to their mayor and council. A fun learning experience was had by all.

from Council Pres. Hayes I hope that you are all enjoying summer. Please be safe and watch for the kids that are out in force playing in so many neighborhoods this time of year. It has been quite a spring and early summer in Pelham. We have many things to be excited about and proud of. I have to congratulate the Pelham High School baseball, softball, track and soccer teams who all had great seasons this spring. As many of you would agree, their competitive successes are to be celebrated, but their dedication and commitment deserve even more of our praise and respect. Please remember that ‘Pelhambration’ is scheduled for July 13th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. This exciting celebration offers activities for the entire family. The feasibility study evaluating whether a Pelham city school system would be financially viable is complete. The study confirmed that we currently generate significantly more local funds for education than any other Shelby County community other than the Shelby County part of Hoover. The study revealed that, because of our large tax base relative to the number of residents attending schools in Pelham, a significant part of the educational taxes generated in Pelham

are being used to fund schools in other areas. This is certainly not an issue in itself since our community clearly doesn’t end at our city limits and we do care about the education of all children in this area. However, Pelham definitely has significant needs for upgrading our school facilities, equipment and programs. Although many people are probably not aware of the current situation or how we compare with our closest neighbors, we have to find the best ways to quickly address these issues. Therefore, we are now working to evaluate both the opportunities and potential issues related to a city school system. We have received significant feedback from the community and we are seeking more input. People have strong feelings related to schools and it has actually been very inspirational to see Pelham residents show their passion about this issue. While different opinions naturally exist on forming a separate school system, most people have shown a strong desire to do whatever is best for our city’s children and our city as a whole. There have been some recommendations for a citywide referendum to determine if a school system makes sense for Pelham, but state law requires the city council to make this decision and does not allow either

the city or the county to spend any money on an advisory election. For years, Shelby County Schools have provided a good education for Pelham’s children. However, a county system has to address a variety of county issues, put in place county-wide policies and allocate funds as it sees fit. Unfortunately, these tough decisions have left little money to address the serious needs of Pelham’s schools. The many changes in our community, constricting education budgets and Shelby County Schools’ decisions to build a number of new schools in our neighboring communities have left Pelham schools inconveniently located for many residents and in serious need of upgrades and repairs. Residents, real estate professionals and developers have made it clear that we need a more centrally located middle school and a new elementary school. Since the last school was built in Pelham back in 2000, Shelby County Schools have built two schools in both Chelsea and Helena, and they are now completing a

third new school in each of these communities. We are sincerely happy for our neighbors related to these new facilities. However, Valley Intermediate is the only primary school that was built in Pelham during the last 35 years even though we were for many years one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama and have seen our population grow virtually the same amount as Chelsea since 2000 and slightly more than Helena over the same period. A building does not make a school; however, an older, poorly located school in need of upgrades can certainly impact the impression students, parents, educators and people from other communities have of both the school and the city. I am a proud graduate of Pelham High School and was fortunate to attend three of the four primary schools in Pelham when there was a great deal of excitement related to our new schools and the new opportunities for students. One of the key reasons we decided to move continued page 6…

back to Pelham was for our children to grow up in this community and attend Pelham schools. I am very thankful for the great teachers that have helped to educate my children, but we definitely have to ask if we can provide our teachers better facilities, resources and programs to take our schools to the next level and in the process make Pelham a better community. Pelham has many great attributes and assets, but you can never truly be a great community without great schools that the community is proud of and will consistently rally around. As one speaker said at the June 17th public hearing, “Some of the best years of my life have been spent in Pelham and at Pelham High School, but we have slipped a little bit.” We have to decide if we are satisfied or if we are willing to commit to improving. The council and mayor are aggressively pursuing a variety of key initiatives and we are all committed to doing everything we can for all the residents

of Pelham. However, so many of the issues that we are facing as a community are significantly interrelated and our schools are clearly key to the future of Pelham. Therefore, we will continue to be advocates for the best schools possible and support whatever is best for each student in Pelham whether this involves them becoming a part of a new city school system or continuing to attend Shelby County Schools. Doubts have been expressed by some about Pelham having the resources to have a city school system like Hoover, Vestavia, Trussville, Madison or Alabaster. This is a fair question, and that is why we requested an expert analysis. The numbers are clear, and it has been very interesting to read and talk to people about the impact of the established city school systems. The tough question is can we expect our schools to be the best that they can be as a small part of the county school system which will continue having to make hard decisions

Wheeler Wrecker Service

about where funds should be spent? We need great schools to keep our city vibrant and growing so that we can better support our retail businesses that generate much of the money needed to provide the quality services that Pelham is known for. A Pelham city school system will not require us to divert any money from our city services or impact the strong financial position of our city. The feasibility study revealed that the tax base to support a city school system already exists and with the same commitment that the residents in Alabaster and Helena have already made to their schools, we could significantly improve our schools and provide Pelham children the tools they need to compete and succeed. Pelham’s students have certainly made us proud through the years, and we must provide them the resources they need to continue their success. Determining the best way to optimize our schools and maximize the opportunities of our community is critical. Our schools are es-

sential to the long-term success of our community and must become an even more important source of community pride. We need attractive, conveniently located schools to be a thriving community. Whether or not you have children (or grandchildren) in our schools, the quality of our schools directly impacts you. For more information related to the potential city school system, see the study, a related presentation and information on upcoming meetings available on the city’s website (www. PelhamOnline.com). Please use these resources to investigate the options for our schools. Regardless of the outcome of this analysis, we have to do everything that we can for our children and for both the short-term and long-term future of our city. Sincerely Yours,

Rick

We’d like you to meet… Mosely Johnson There’s a lifetime of history in pictures on the wall of Mosely Johnson’s office. There is the Hooper City High School graduating class of 1957, where he was president of the student council. There is a 2001 photograph with U.S. Congressman John Lewis on the 40th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders. From left to right in that photo stand the president of Greyhound Lines, Mosely Johnson, Dot Johnson, Joseph Peterson and Congressman John Lewis, who was a Freedom Rider on the bus into Birmingham in 1961. Mosely recalls he was on duty when the bus arrived from Anniston and when it departed for Montgomery the next morning. In Anniston, the bus had been met by an angry mob that slashed the tires and threw a firebomb inside, filling the bus with smoke. One of the diesel tanks exploded, and the Freedom Riders shoved their way out only to be met by waiting vigilantes with baseball bats and lead pipes. Later that same day, history records, the Freedom Riders were beaten a second time as they arrived in Birmingham. Johnson saw men with baseball bats get onto the bus. The bus windows had been covered from the outside with large cardboard boxes, he recalls. Reporters and photographers were standing by, but like him, they couldn’t see what was happening inside the bus for about 15 minutes before police arrived. Mosely was there the next morning before the bus departed for Montgomery. He recalls the assigned driver saying, “I’m not risking my life driving these folks anywhere.” The driver was called into the office for about thirty minutes where a conversation ensued. He then reappeared to collect tickets. Mosely himself was wearing the assigned white badge that said Greyhound Operation Uprise. “I was told, ‘If anyone asks you,

tell them we’re building new bus stations. Greyhound now owns a charter bus line and a cruise line.’ Those badges, I realized, protected us from getting beaten. The mobs were going after everyone who was black.” Johnson’s wall plaque shows that he worked for Greyhound from 1957 to 2001. He was featured in a company article called “Our Driving Force” with Walter Underwood and William Hill, who, at that time, had nearly 130 years of combined experience. Mosely was quoted in that article as saying, “Good service is the only competitive edge you will ever have over a competitor. I always remind my employees to pay attention to details, and always go the extra mile.” “My father, Leroy Edward Johnson, was first a coal miner and then worked for Jefferson County Health Dept.,” Mosely said. “He was a neat and tidy man—he kept everything in place. He wouldn’t let one food touch another on his plate. My mother was Jewel Thelma Johnson. She taught us to be clean and to not be too loud. She encouraged us to study and prepare ourselves, because she said, ‘One day your chance will come to move up, to be better, and I want you to be prepared.’ And the chance did come, and it happened within her lifetime.” “My grandmother, Anna Mae, was called Mamie. Grandmother had Cherokee and white blood. She was smart, with soulful eyes. Her brother, Eddie Moseley, owned a cotton gin and a general store in Madison, Alabama, and they were well-to-do people.” “Granddaddy always was spit shined and dressed in a tie—even to sit on the front porch. He came down to the Greyhound station and he told me ‘Boy, keep this job at Greyhound. If you don’t have to lift anything heavier than a sack of groceries, when you get old, your body won’t be broke down.’”

Mosely’s sister, Barbara Ann Ford, was a schoolteacher who worked her way up to supervisor at Vocational Education for Jefferson County. She was married to one of the first Tuskegee Airmen, Lt. Col. Harry Ford, Jr., whose photograph is also on Mosely’s wall. His brother, Carl Lee Johnson, was one of first blacks hired by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Dept. around 1964. By retirement, he was Deputy Chief Sheriff. “We are all hometown products of Warrior, Alabama,” said Mosely. Mosely married second wife, Linda Pullum Johnson, in 1991 and honeymooned in Jamaica despite his dislike of flying. “I always thought I was a top dog. But then I realized I was not the top dog. Linda is my backbone; she makes me look better than I am.” Mosely’s cousin, Esi Boda Murray, brought to his attention recently a possible kinship with Alex Haley. The information came from the Alex Haley Museum in Henning, Tennessee. In Alex Haley’s Roots, Haley’s lineage is traced back seven generations to Kunta Kinte, who grew up in Gambia. Haley concluded the last 30 pages of the book writing about himself. Both he and Mosely have some Murray lineage in their families. “I want the readers of this magazine to know I am not saying there is posi-

tive proof, because there are some missing names in the family tree. The missing link is my great-greatgreat grandfather. However, when you look at photographs of me and Alex Haley side by side, you will see there is a definite resemblance.” “I have wondered why all my life I have had the urge to do—not just sit back and ‘do nothing.’ I have always known that I am a free person. Maybe once I didn’t have the privileges that you have or couldn’t go the places you go, but nobody’s going to tell me that I am not free. I might have had to go in the back door, but I was the nicest person going in the back door. I was so nice that they would want me to come in the front door next time, and invite me in.” “I have tried to find a way around obstacles to accomplish what I want to accomplish,” Mosely continued. “I have always made myself useful. If I see a need, I try to go and fill it. I make myself available to help and always try to be nice to others.” After retiring from Greyhound, Mosely was a bus driver for Shelby County Schools, where he was a favorite with many local students. Today, Mosely Johnson serves his hometown of Pelham as an active member of its beautification board, helping Pelham put its best foot forward. Sounds like a perfect fit for this remarkable man.

Dan and Amber Howard began working out together at Snap Fitness 24/7 in Helena soon after it opened three years ago.The Howards made a commitment to achieve and live a healthy lifestyle — a benefit that has to be gained through hard work and discipline. Now they’re reaping the rewards! Dan and Amber Howard joined SNAP Fitness soon after it opened, initially drawn to its 24-hour availability. They chose to work with Personal Trainer Anna Reimers and have continued their two-day weekly workout with her for the past three years. “We wanted to learn just which exercises would really be successful for us and which workouts yield what results. Anna is very good at providing change in the workouts and introducing new challenges, such as working with TRX bands,” Their two hour commitment with Anna is also family time together, “We cut up, we have fun, and we work hard.” Dan works in Human Resource Management at BBVA Compass Bank, and Amber teaches fourth grade in the Shelby County School System. “In the beginning,” Dan recalls,“I could only do a few pushups. I could run maybe a mile, but afterwards I felt exhausted.” “Starting with Anna taught us baby steps but mentally and physically, the first three months were the hardest, as

fitness had never been part of my lifestyle, just an off and on thing,” Dan said.“As we made the commitment to our health, we began to eat right, drink more water, and make better choices.” Dan has lost 35 pounds and greatly improved his cardiovascular fitness. “I am the type of person who likes having a goal, and here, just as at work, I find it very important to have a vision, then analyze backwards the steps needed to achieve it.” “We have set small benchmarks along the way, and since Amber and I work out as a couple, we are accountable to each other.” Amber also enjoys Zumba classes with Merri Gwin as she loves dancing and was a majorette in college. Dan took up running seriously last October. He runs the Hillsboro Trail and on open roads around town. Just two months ago, he ran his first half marathon and is now training for a full one— The Seven Bridges Marathon in Chattanooga,Tennessee October 20, 2013. He presently runs 10 to 13 miles on Saturday mornings and will increase

to 20 to 24 miles as the marathon approaches. He and Amber take Friday off to rest their bodies. They feel they have achieved a healthy balance overall in work, workout and play. The Howards say, too, “Anna sets a great example in her own lifestyle. She eats, lives, and breathes health, as she comes from a family of track athletes.” “It is important to learn what works for your own body and your metabolism. There are some dedicated lifetime fitness folks that workout here at SNAP; we see them and know we want to be that healthy when we are their age.” Dan and Amber Howard are living, breathing examples of an old saying, “Couples that work out together, stay together!” Not to mention all the other physical and mental health benefits that come from living a healthy lifestyle which includes exercise!

Dan, a goal-oriented man, in three short years has gotten healthy and fit, lost 35 pounds, run a half-marathon and is currently preparing to run a full marathon this fall.

3M Karts & Mowers – Renovation features expanded product showroom One of Pelham’s longstanding businesses has undergone a big renovation. While driving by, you might have noticed that Three M Karts & Mowers has a new storefront. Be sure to take time to drop by and check out the inside, too. They now have a 3,000 square foot showroom which allows them to show off their large selection of pro grade ExMark Mowers and top brands of quality power tools. Residents may remember the old front of the store, which was only about 250 square feet and left little room for anything but standing. Now, say father-son owners Mike and Michael Harris, not only can they better display their equipment and mowers, but there is also more room for customers to test-drive before they buy. Michael is glad to see the project come to fruition, saying, “We’ve been talking about, saving up for, and dreaming of a remodel for ten years.” The

remodel includes more than ‘just’ the 12-times-bigger showroom and redesigned façade to the store, though. Also new to Three M are more offices, space above the front to stock boxes of new equipment and tools, and a bigger area for storing customer’s mowers and other equipment awaiting repair in the back of the building. “Our secretary needed more space, and now we have offices where we can meet with customers choosing to finance their purchases with us,” Michael explains. Customers can now enter in their own information so the purchasing process has become a lot smoother, and there is an added layer of security in their purchases that will benefit everyone. “We strive to take care of our customers, and we will continue growing through our customer service,” he says. “We improve on what we do every day. We strive to get better every day at what we do.” Michael credits many people

and businesses in helping with the transformation of their building, saying, “So many hands were involved in this; so many friends in construction helped us out; we’re very thankful.” Hulon Construction was the general contractor for the renovation, with Jeff Hulon working closely with the staff to pitch ideas and help plan the job. ExMark, the nation’s leading mower manufacturer, has worked closely with Three M for many

years and also helped with the process. “They treat us like a partner—more like family than a customer. It’s unbelievable to be partnered with such a quality manufacturer.” Michael added a special thank you to their customers who have supported them the past 12 years. “None of this would have been possible without them.” Congratulations to the Harrises on the new digs. Now the building matches the service!

Two PHS Students design Pelhambration logo As some of you may know, the city council held a contest in April to name Pelhambration, and what you may not know is the honor of designing the logo went to a couple of talented PHS students! After the name was decided, the Pelhambration Committee commissioned the PHS AP Art Class to design the logo. However, the AP art students were scrambling to get their portfolios together. Kim Harrison, the PHS Art Department Chair, talked to a few of the art teachers about students who might do well with the project, and teachers agreed Bailey Stephens might be a good one for the job. Bailey, a rising senior, drew out her design in Connie Nolen’s Literary Magazine class. Connie loved her design, but knew they needed to spruce it up a bit digitally to use as a logo. One of Bailey’s classmates, a rising junior named Sarah Sansom, had access to an art tablet which they used to redraw the design.

“She knew I had a tablet because I’ve used it before for the ‘lit mag,’” explained Sarah. “It was my sister Emily’s, who was also on staff here, but when she left for college, she got a new one.” Emily, a 2012 graduate, is currently attending Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. In true PHS spirit, Sarah decided to “carry the green and gold colors of Pelham throughout the design.” Sarah was nervous about their collaboration at first. “When I’m working with someone else’s art, I’m always afraid they won’t like what I do to it,” she said. She had no need to worry, though. When Bailey saw the design, she was very pleased with how it turned out, exclaiming, “That’s so cool!” The Pelhambration Planning Committee liked it as well, signing off on the girls’ design as the official logo. Be sure to keep an eye out for their Pelhambration logo on banners at the event as well as in this magazine.

Meet Caitland Smith, daughter of Ted Smith and Wendy Adams, who is a rising senior at Pelham High School. The 17-year-old runner has been making waves at state track meets for a few years, and her 2012-2013 season has been better than ever, with sweeping wins in sprinting races on both indoor and outdoor tracks! Earlier in the season, she won the 60 meter dash at the Indoor Last Chance Invitational; the 800 meter run and 60 meter dash at the AHSAA Indoor State 6A championships, and finished third in the 60 meter dash at the 2013 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York. More recently, she won all three 100, 200 and 400 meter runs at the Class 6A State Championships in Gulf Shores. She was also a part of the Panthers’ 4x400 relay team, which took 6th place in that event. “The 60m dash is my favorite event, because it’s sprinting at its purest form. Of course there’s strategy, but a lot of it is just who’s the fastest. The 400m dash isn’t, because it’s so long compared to all of my other events. There’s so much you have to think about. My approach to the 400m is way different than my approach to the 60m, because it’s physically and mentally harder on the body. The 400m takes everything you have, where the 60m is over in a few seconds.” Caitland started her track career in the seventh grade at RMS, after going to track meets for her younger brother Jalen, who is on the PHS boys’ varsity track team. “I just happened to be at one of my brother’s practices,” she said, “I hated sitting on the sidelines and decided to jump in.” The following year she ran with PHS varsity as an eighth grader, and was named the Girls’ Sprint MVP. She did not run for the school in ninth grade, but came back her sophomore year. “My inspiration is the way running makes me feel. I love competition and the adrenaline rush that comes with it. I also get inspiration from Carmelita Jeter—the USA silver medalist in the 100m dash at the London Olympics. She’s also a sprinter, so every time I see her run, it makes me want to be better.” “I like the pressure you get from racing, and I love to stay busy.” Caitland laughs, “I don’t like being bored!” This student-athlete definitely has a lot on her plate: on top of training for track, she is also in several honors classes while maintaining a 3.61 GPA. In addition to running track, Caitland also plays on the PHS volleyball team, though track is where she sees her future. She says she has already started looking at a few colleges to continue her track career after graduation, but at the time of this interview, under NCAA guidelines she couldn’t officially start talking to schools until July 1. “It would be amazing to go to the Olympics or go pro after college, but either way I’m grateful for the chance to hopefully receive a paid education to further my goals.” The future looks very bright for Caitland Smith. With her exceptional athletic abilities and intelligence, the sky is the limit!

sity of West Georgia. Her final semester in school, she worked as a student teacher with her former PE coach Robyn Doldan at Carrollton Elementary, the same school she attended as a child. She was then fortunate enough to work at one of Nancy Lieberman-Klein’s basketball camps in Dallas, TX. “While I was working in Texas, that’s where I started to fall in love with coaching,” she says. Amy taught PE and Health at McNair Middle School in Decatur, GA, for one year, followed by 2 years at Carrollton Elementary School, before moving to Alabama to accept a job at Bessemer Academy as Athletic Director, head basketball coach and softball coach. Amy’s years playing basketball in college didn’t change her allegiance; she says, “I absolutely love softball.” She was finally able to get back to the sport at Bessemer, where she got her first taste of fast-pitch ball, which she fell in love with. Her Bessemer Academy team finished 26-4 and 3rd in the state. In 2000, after one year in Bessemer, PHS offered Amy the positions of assistant basketball coach, softball coach, and volleyball coach, all of which she accepted. She assisted coach (and now athletic director) Kim Kiel with basketball for 3 years, Tammy Richardson with Freshman volleyball one year, but ended up becoming head softball coach about two

weeks before that first season—and she never looked back. Amy also achieved certifications to teach Physical Education and Health Education in K-12 schools. These led her to her role as PE teacher at Helena Elementary, which she does alongside her coaching duties at PHS. Sabrina Tutchtone and Anna Laura Dyer are Amy’s assistant coaches at PHS, with Ashley Belew as head Junior Varsity coach. Amy says the key element to their coaching style with the girls is about keeping it in perspective. “We always get the girls to play like the score is 0-0, as a challenge for them. If they pretend we’re losing, it’s easier for them to think, we gotta get a hit.” “These kids are something else, they keep it interesting,” Amy says. “They work hard and stay hungry. They are very motivated. I could not ask for a better group of kids.” It’s plain to see just how great this team of girls is. In fact, the icing on the cake of their fantastic 2012-2013 season is the fact that six Lady Panther starters received scholarships and committed to Division 1 schools, which is a record for Pelham High School. We agree with Amy: It’s been a great year for Pelham Softball. And with only two seniors on the team, the future looks bright for the Lady Panthers with a winner like Amy at the helm!

Valley Intermediate Students Take Over City Hall — Youth Government Day “What is more responsive and influential than any other form of government to you in the country?” Mayor Gary Waters asked Valley Intermediate School children visiting Pelham’s police department on Monday, April 22. The fifth-graders’ resounding answer boomed: “PELHAM CITY HALL!” “That’s right! We’re different than any other government in the history of the world, ever!” Mayor Waters enthusiastically began the students’ annual indepth look into how their city is run. One group of lucky students were elected to “official city positions” by their peers in an election at VIS. They got to follow around their adult counterparts for several hours. They, along with the rest of the fifth-graders, toured the city council building

and chambers, police department, fire department, revenue department, water works, library and court. Student Riley Coston was elected mayor for the day. Ellie McPhearson was elected city council president, with Carla Aleman, Channing Knox, Maddie Goatley and Ena Imsirovic elected to serve as council members. Xavier Lankford served as city clerk. Student Jordan Intal served as the police chief, Anna Boutwell as the fire chief, Kate Flurry as fire marshal, Addison Watts as director of human resources, Neil Furman as city engineer, Zach Johnson as the building official and Kylie Snyder was the library director. Josh Rehovsky served as the director of Ballantrae Golf Club, Kristina Owen as president

of the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, Becca Keyes as director of parks and recreation, Katie Weldon as director of public works, Caulin Jones as the finance director, Madison Lewis as court administrator and clerk and Anna Wilkes as director of the Pelham Civic Complex. After the regularly scheduled city council meeting at 7pm that night, the student city council, mayor and clerk held their own council meeting, where they proposed resolutions for: antibullying measures; a counselor for male students at VIS; and presented the actual city council and mayor with a banner as thanks for teaching them so much about their government. “We have, unquestionably, learned more today than the kids did,” said Pelham City Council

President Rick Hayes. “We asked the kids, and these were the items they brought; what they thought was important. I was very impressed with them. Usually they’ll say they’re glad they have ice cream in school.” “One year, the group suggested a resolution for a swimming pool!” laughed councilwoman Karyl Rice. This was certainly a more productive Youth Government Day—this group meant business! The city would like to thank Valley Intermediate School Principal Dana Payne and all the staff and faculty at VIS for the wonderful job they do, and for allowing the students to learn more about the ways in which their city operates. Who knows what the future holds for this bright bunch? Maybe a stint at city hall? Stay tuned…

“PELHAM CITY HALL!”

Valley students response when asked by the mayor, “What is more responsive and influential than any other form of government to you in the country?

2013 Alabama 6A State Champs! “ Give me one run; that’s all I’ll need,” said pitcher Jack Pierce before the game. Chase Brashier and Aaron Anderson combined to oblige him and with a phenomenal defensive effort by the Panthers, Pierce’s words turned to gold as the Pelham Panthers claimed the Alabama 6A Crown in baseball. The Panthers swept the Huskies as this followed a 3-2 win the night before. Thomas Lowery was awarded the State 6A MVP Award and the team took home the crown!

Panthers’ Championship game in pictures—one was the magic number!

The Panthers took game one in a 3-2 battle royale. Thomas Lowery dominated on the mound and Fletcher Johnson scored the winning run. Game 2 featured Jack Pierce pitching and a determined defensive effort by the Panthers, demonstrated by the 4-6-3 double play shown above. Chase Brashier’s double and Aaron Anderson’s RBI to follow was the only offense needed in the championship game between Jeff Mauldin’s Huskies and Sean Anderson’s Panthers held May 18 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. It was a sweep by the Panthers—State 6A Champs! Congratulations to all the coaches and players!

PHS Panthers honor baseball state champs, softball runnersup and an All American track star in an end of the year school assembly The PHS gym was abuzz with excitement as Principal Bob Lavett prepared to present plaques and awards to outstanding Panther sports teams, athletes and coaches. Many parents and fans also came out to show their support, including both Pelham Mayor Gary Waters and Helena Mayor Mark Hall. Mr. Lavett said, “We want to acknowledge the sports teams that have made a great impact on Panther pride! It’s always a great day to be a Pelham Panther!” The Panthers baseball team beat the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies at the AHSAA State Baseball playoffs May 17-18 in Montgomery for the prestigious title, taking the best of 3 series in a sweep (3-2 and 1-0). The championship series pitted PHS first year head coach Sean Anderson against former Panthers head coach Jeff Mauldin, who left for Hewitt-Trussville after last season. Anderson had been a Mauldin assistant for many years and the two still remain close friends. The Lady Panthers softball team also had a fantastic season. With a strong showing in the AHSAA State Softball playoffs May 16-17, the team finished the season No. 2 in the state with a record of 45-6. When you consider that all but two of these players return next season, the future looks bright for the Lady Panthers! Individual athletes were recognized as well. Runner Caitland Smith won two individual championships in outdoor track for the 60m and the 400m, as well as three individual championships in indoor track, in the 100m, 200m and 300m races. She was named All-American at a meet in New York in January, and has the opportunity to attend track meets overseas in Puerto Rico and the Ukraine.

Thomas Lowery, the winning pitcher of the Panthers’ first game against the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies, was named Alabama State 6A MVP. Lady Panthers Becky Fox and Emily Spain were selected for the AHSAA All Tournament team. PHS Athletic Director Kim Kiel announced that the Shelby County Coaches Association named baseball coach Sean Anderson, softball coach Amy Sullivan and track coach Marty Springfield “Coaches of the Year” for their respective sports. “The players are the reason we get coach of the year status,” Amy said. “I’ve been truly blessed this year; these are great girls.” Sean thanked the parents and the communities of both Pelham and Helena. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” he said. After the announcements were made, all the players and coaches put arms around each other’s shoulders and sang the PHS Alma Mater accompanied by the band. Teachers reminded seniors that this was their last time singing it as students—a bittersweet thought that drove many to sing even louder. “It’s a great day to be a Pelham Panther!” Mr. Lavett shouted again at the end of the song. “Now go to class!” Shelby County Coaches of the Year, l-r: baseball coach Sean Anderson; softball coach Amy Sullivan and track coach Marty Springfield. All four members of Vintage Gray have been performing since they were too young to even be in the places they played. Members of the band have joined well known entertainers including Stevie Wonder and Alabama on stage.

Vintage Gray likes to take their audiences back to the best of the 50s, 60s and 70s classic rock and roll. They can throw in some 80s tunes as well. For the classic country lover, well, they can play those too!

They are always crowd pleasers, whether the audience remembers the songs of their youth or the younger generation who appreciates “oldies” music. Stevan and Deborah Grebel opened the Stevan Grebel Center for Dance in 2003. Stevan was professor of dance and artistic director of Alabama Ballet, University Ballet and Ballet UAB from 1970 until the closing of the dance department in 1996. From 1996 until 2001, the Grebels taught and worked with the Montgomery Ballet’s professional company under the direction of Priscilla CrommelinBall. After a short partnership from 20012003, they decided to open the Stevan Grebel Center for Dance at 102 Commerce Parkway. In 2004, they formed the Alabama Youth Ballet Company as the performing wing of the school. They have presented and produced The Nutcracker for five seasons,

as well as Sleeping Beauty, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Copellia and Paquita. The performances have been well attended by residents of Pelham and surrounding communities who have come in to enjoy the shows. All performances are held at Pelham High School. For more information, visit Grebeldance.com or their Facebook page.

Meet New PHS Senior Counselor Laura Cochran PHS recently rehired Laura Cochran, formerly its biology teacher, as its new senior counselor. A good counselor must be able to relate to their students, and if there’s anyone who knows about being a student, it’s Laura. Laura started her undergraduate courses at Mercer and earned her bachelors degree at the Medical College of Georgia. She met husband, Phil, while a student at Mercer, and they were married in Atlanta. They moved to Huntsville until Phil was transferred to Birmingham with General Foods. Here, she started working on her masters in Allied Health Science at UAB. With that degree, she practiced as a dental hygienist and taught at UAB for 15 years. “I’ve always been interested in the sciences,” Laura says. “I really wanted to be in a helping field.” It was that love for science and a latent desire she’d had since high school to teach that sent her back to school

yet again. She took classes at the University of Montevallo and earned a second masters, this time in education. With her teaching degree, she was hired at PHS as its biology teacher, where she taught for 16 years. Originally moving to the area because her husband was transferred, they grew to love Pelham and Helena. “The community is friendly; it’s beautiful; it’s a great place to have a family. It’s just a great place.” Her love for working with students and desire to help them achieve even more drove her back to school. While still teaching biology at PHS, she completed her third masters degree program, this time in counseling, from the University of West Alabama. In October 2012, Thompson High School had an opening for a counselor. “I didn’t have any real reason to leave PHS,” Laura said, but counseling is the work she wanted to do, so she changed

schools. She only stayed at Thompson a month, though, before hearing that the senior counselor slot at PHS was open. “When that happened, it’s like, I wanted to be the senior counselor here, so I came back! I missed the kids at Pelham.” Previously, Laura sponsored the Visual Ensemble and Pantherettes Dance Team for 14 years. “My dream job would have been a ballerina,” she laughs. With limited extra time now, she retired from helping with these groups. Laura and Phil, who now works at Integrity Storage Solutions, have been married 33 years. They have two grown children, Clint and Elizabeth, who are 25 and 24 respectively. Clint is currently in surgical physician school, taking classes at

UAB. Elizabeth, a former Miss Alabama, is working in Memphis at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital as a research assistant and hoping to get into med school. Laura is, understandably, very proud of her family. “We’re a bunch of science nerds!” She is proud of her school family as well. “First of all, the schools here are excellent and provide great teaching for the kids. I’m really excited to be part of the counseling team at PHS. I work with three other fantastic counselors and some terrific kids.” Welcome home, Laura!

SAME DAY SERVICE… In by 10, out by 3! WE NOW DO

ALTERATIONS!

“Joyce, (on right in this photo) keeps up with everything; it’s stored in her brain. We might forget, but Joyce remembers—she was the one who started me playing Rummikub,” friend Reba Hester (left) observed, pictured here with Evelyn Rosier, (center).

Jersey lady now finding happiness and fun in Pelham Joyce Venezia (pronounced “vuh-net-chia”) moved from Cranford, New Jersey, (about as close to NYC as Pelham is to Bham) in 2004 to be near her daughter in Pelham. “I made the decision in a single afternoon near Easter when I saw a For Sale sign in front of my current home. The only con was leaving my friends.” Venezia’s daughter, Claire Lenker, came to UAB for graduate school and is now a social worker in the Pulmonary Department at Children’s of Alabama. Grandson Kevin, 20, is a music education major at Mississippi State. He played tuba and sousaphone at Pelham High School. Kenny, 15, a PHS sophomore, is a wrestler and plays football. “I’m here [Pelham Senior Center] about every day,” Venezia says. “PSC is wonderful facility. We are very fortunate.” Venezia enjoys Wii Bowling, line dancing, yoga, and is a dedicated player of Rummikub. She also enjoys Silver Sneakers and takes water aerobics at the YMCA. She sings with the PSC group. “We have some talent; some sing in their church choirs. We present a half-hour program at nearby assisted living facilities such as Maplewood Lane. We sing Moonlight Bay, sometimes Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, but more patriotic songs and hymns. When we sing hymns, the residents in the audience close

their eyes; they mouth the words. They are comforted. Some of them have a lot of visitors, some don’t. We feel that we are bringing a little sunshine to their lives.” What surprised her about coming to Alabama? “Everyone says ‘Yes ma’am’ and ‘No ma’am.’ You don’t find that in New Jersey.” Venezia keeps a list of words and phrases she has been introduced to in the South. Carry someone to the doctor. I’m all stove up. Sit rite’cheer. I’m fixin’ to go. I hope my car cranks today. I’m uptown now! Also, I’m in high cotton. Venezia says, “The first time I ever saw cotton was on a trip with my husband visiting Helen Keller’s home in Tuscumbia. Several of the ladies here grew up on farms and picked cotton until their fingers bled. The pianist for our singing group used to be allowed to not pick cotton as long as she stayed in and practiced her music!” Visiting Italy in 1997 with husband, Michael (who died in 2001), was a trip she still recalls. “Of course, we went to Venice or Venezia, our namesake, and Florence and Rome. We were in an audience with the Pope, which was meaningful to my husband as he was Catholic.” Thanks to Joyce Venezia for sharing a little of her story with us. We ’preciate it! Over the past 10 years, he has coached more than 100 Junior teams during local seasons and coached over 30 junior teams at the State Championships. Pelham Tennis Pro Wins USPTA 2013 Award Pelham Assistant Tennis Pro Rusty Wilkes was voted by the USPTA as the winner of the Southern Assistant Tennis Pro of the Year for 2013. He has worked full time for the Pelham Racquet Club as Assistant Tennis Pro since 2001, running junior programs, camps, clinics, tourneys, & coaching USTA junior teams. He is a USPTA Level 1 Certified Professional. This is the highest level of certification for a Tennis Pro. Rusty received his award May 18, at the USPTA Southern awards banquet, held near Charleston, SC. This year’s award was based on many factors. In 2012, Rusty was the Director for Pro Circuit Kid’s Day. Over 150 kids attend-

Wilkes has been honored with over the years. He won Junior Program of the Year, presented by the Alabama Tennis Association, in 2004. In 2005 and 2009, he won the USPTA Southern Assistant Pro Award. In 2007 & 2009, he won the Alabama State Pro of the Year award from USPTA. Rusty said he is very proud of his junior players in Rusty’s Tennis Academy. Win or lose, he has emphasized two priorities: sportsmanship first, to play with class win or lose, and second, always give your best effort. He said “I am truly blessed to have the opportunity in the City of Pelham to make a living doing what I love, and have been for the past 11 years. It’s been so meaningful to give back to the game of tennis, since tennis has given so much to me.” Rusty played college tennis on scholarship at Jefferson State. He has finished USTA tourney rankings #1 in Alabama 10 times, including 3 singles, 3 men’s doubles in 4.0, and 4 times in 7.0 mixed. He has also been part of 5 State Championship league teams, including back-to-back State Mixed Championships the past 2 years. Rusty and partner Tracey Walsh were 23-1 over 2

years, and ranked #1 in Southern in September 2010. Rusty and mixed partner Tina Mills went 22-1 last year in league play, including 11-0 at State the past 2 years. In 4 years at the Dothan State Mixed tourney, he has won 3 State Team Titles, and has a personal record of 19-0 at the 7.0 level. “My tennis experiences as a player have helped me greatly in coaching students. I have coached many championship junior and adult teams. Also, at least eight junior players in the past six years from Rusty’s Tennis Academy have earned college tennis scholarships. All of the championships and scholarships are really great. Just as meaningful is giving back to the game of tennis through coaching. It’s great to make a positive difference daily in so many young lives through life lessons learned through tennis.”

The Dangels and Shelby with Judge Fuhrmeister on April 14, 2011 at her Adoption Finalization right, and at home last month.

The Dangel Family: Happy in Pelham Paul and Sandy Dangel met in college at Western Carolina University. They happened to be dating each other’s roommates, so they were acquainted, but it was when they both turned up single on Valentine’s Day during their junior year that a new beginning, culminating with their marriage, was ushered in. Paul, who grew up in Boston and Atlanta, is the Complex Director for Group Sales for Starwood Hotels (Sheraton and Westin) and BJCC. Sandy, who has a degree in Early Childhood Education, teaches three, four and five year olds at Creative Montessori in Homewood. “We selected Pelham for our home because we knew we wanted to start a family, and we wanted to have a sense of community,” Paul says. After a failed adoption in 2010, the Dangel’s church friends at Discovery United Methodist placed them on the prayer list and through another mother, they learned of an opportunity to adopt locally. Sandy was even able to be in the delivery room when their daughter, Shelby, was born. “We took a leap of faith that this was right for us,” Paul says. “And I would tell others who find themselves in a similar situation to not get discouraged.” Shelby, now three, attends Creative Montessori with her

mom. Sandy speaks of her love for her chosen career, “I have always loved watching children learn…that look in their eyes when the light bulb goes on, so to speak.” Sandy volunteers with Discovery UMC’s ‘Garage Give Away’ held annually on the first Saturday in December. (www. facebook.com/TheGarageGiveaway) Paul appreciates that no two work days are the same for him as he monitors various groups and events, from weddings to conventions to government inaugurations that his team brings to Birmingham. He is the committee head for the BBVA Compass Board and on the Board of Directors at Creative Montessori. For relaxation the family, including their Two-by-Two rescue dog, Brady, enjoy Paul’s skills with his new Big Green Egg smoker/grill/cooker. He also plays golf and is a loyal New England Patriots fan. “We spend a lot of time locally at Cozumel Grill and Nino’s. We think it’s great that Pelham is passionate about being one of the best communities around and making plans to move forward. There is great potential to have a very popular entertainment complex along the 119 corridor,” said Paul.

Residential Beautification Award 109 Courtyard Drive The recently “remodeled” yard of Gary and Libby Nuyt is our residential yard for this issue. Their spring makeover included additional plantings and boulders added to the front bed as well as a birdbath. A Cercis ‘Merlot’ (redbud) and cherry tree provided color earlier in the season beneath the upright oaks already at home in the front bed. Libby loves her daylilies and several new plants have joined those already established, all of which came from her Aunt Elma in Pall Mall, Tennessee, who is a semi-retired daylily breeder. “It seems to me a shame that daylilies only last one day,” Libby says, “but I guess that makes us appreciate each bloom all the more.” Libby also shared that her daylilies were once tagged with their names, but between transplanting and Rufus, their pet boxer, playing in the yard, most have now lost their exact identity. Near the front entry are Gardenia jasminoides ‘Radicans’ which stay small but fill the air with their luscious scent. Two new beds in the back yard have been filled with hydrangeas and Tennessee ferns. Gary and Libby Nuyt built their home at 109 Courtyard Drive and moved in about seven years ago, relocating from Chattanooga to be near their son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons already living in Chelsea.

The Nuyt yard also sports unique birdhouses made by Keith Sparks of Unique Driftwood Creations in Haleyville, Alabama. They have given many as gifts to friends. The yard recently acquired a butterfly house and a screech owl house in the back yard. It is mounted very high so next year’s baby owls will have branches for a perch as they learn to fly. Congratulations to the Nuyts on their beautiful yard. People who care for their yards in this manner are a part of what makes Pelham neighborhoods so inviting.

Josh Welborn is just a regular 14-year-old boy. He loves listening to and making music. He has a “DJ setup” on his computer where he composes his own music and is looking forward to going to college in New York to study music production. But Josh does have a few differences from most other teenage boys. He was born with albinism, is legally blind, and plays a Paralympic sport called goalball. Goalball is a Paralympic sport for the visually impaired. It involves hearing and reacting to sound. There are a maximum of six players on each team, and the goals are the width of each end of the court. The players take turns throwing the ball in a bowlinglike style, and opposing players try to block it with their bodies. Because of the importance of hearing, spectators and players must remain totally silent when the ball is in play. The players wear special blinding goggles to ensure that they cannot see, and the ball, which weighs 2.75 lbs, has bells inside it so that players can hear the direction from which the ball is coming. Josh got involved in goalball seven years ago at the Lakeshore Foundation Sports camp. He began competing in the adult league at age 11 due to his skill level in the sport. Members of the USABA

Josh above & left playing center between two wings in goalball; and at right with his mom, Linda, who home schools Josh so he can pursue his sports passion.

(United States Association of Blind Athletes) scout throughout the year during the season looking for players to compete at the “World” level. They chose eight players recently to compete and held a training camp in conjunction with the US Men’s team training camp at the Lakeshore Foundation in May. The best six were chosen by the committee after evaluations at the camp. Josh was chosen as one of the six to represent the U.S. at the International Blind Sports Youth World Championships, a week long tournament against ten other countries’ teams in Colorado Springs, Colorado, later this month. This is his first big step towards his goal of making the men’s Paralympic team in 2016. Because goalball is not a popular spectator sport, players have to rely on donations to get them to tournaments. If you would like to donate to Josh, you can make a donation payable to USABA, and mail it to Josh’s mom, Linda Welborn, at 117 Hampton Lake Dr. Pelham Al, 35124. Email: welborn_d@ bellsouth.net. Donations are tax deductible. Congratulations to Josh on his accomplishment, and best of luck to him as he represents the U.S. in Colorado this month! We’re pulling for you, Josh!

Library Guild Scholarships Help PHS Grads Each year, the Pelham Library Guild awards a $2,500 scholarship to a deserving Pelham High school student who shows a commitment to community service and furthering their education. In 2011, the scholarship went to Kelly Haberstroh, who attends the University of Montevallo, and in 2012 it went to Alexandra Cochran, who attends the University of Alabama.

Library Director Barbara Roberts and the Guild are happy to share that both of these girls are paying it forward by doing well in school and making a difference in the communities around them. They are both in the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society in their respective colleges, and Kelly is the historian of the UM chapter. Alexandra, in UA’s nursing school, has a 3.8 GPA and is on the dean’s list. She’s a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society, and is a National Collegiate Scholars Nursing Ambassador. Her reasons for wanting to be a nurse are very close to her heart. “I got sick with Crohn’s when I was young, and I was in hospitals a lot. The nurses were amazing— they changed my outlook,” she explains. She’d love to work at a children’s hospital, she said. Kelly is pursuing a degree in psychology at UM with a minor

o n l y $9 per unit in human services. She also has a 3.8 GPA and is on the president’s list. She is a Falcon Scholar at Montevallo, works with people with disabilities through the Best Buddies program, and is taking part in an internship at Family Connections. She relishes all of these experiences, saying, “It’s experience working with the people that I want to work with further along in my career.” She chose counseling because she wants to be there for teens going through some of the same issues she dealt with when she was younger. “I connect with teenagers really well,” she explains. Kelly’s first job was at the Pelham Library, and she says the assistance she received there with her high school research papers helped her immensely. She says, “The library has always been there to help me.” “The Pelham Library is a vital part of the community,” Alexandra agreed, “as it provides all of the tools necessary for the success

of all students.” Both girls are very thankful for their scholarships. “I used the scholarship to buy my books,” Alexandra said gratefully. Kelly, who is attending college on her own dime, said she nearly fainted when she heard the news. “My mom said, ‘You got the scholarship, you’ll be fine!’” Although it may be early in their college careers, both have ambitious post-grad plans. Kelly wants to get a masters and doctorate in counseling, while Alexandra plans to attend medical school for two years in a nurse practitioner program. “I am proud of what these two young ladies have accomplished,” Barbara said. “It is indeed gratifying to see the Guild Scholarship put to such good use in shaping these two young lives.” We can hardly wait to see how far the 2013 recipient, Abby Beal, will go with her scholarship. Congratulations to all these outstanding students!

Meet U.S. Air Force Veteran Bill Midlik William Matthew (Bill) Midlik is a U.S. Air Force veteran who served from 1946-1949, and after training in Denver, was stationed in Forth Worth, Texas. Midlik grew up in Battleboro, Pennsylvania, a small coalmining town near Pittsburgh, the 13th of 15 children. (One other brother still lives in PA.) He took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend the Case Institute of Technology, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During military duty, he was a remote-control turret mechanic and was part of a select group trained to load the atomic bomb, which at that time was top secret, “Back then, you didn’t discuss that,” he recalls. From Ft. Worth, he traveled to training exercises in Alaska and Schwarzburg, Germany, in 1947. He was called up for duty in the Korean War during his 2nd year of college, but his professor wrote a letter asking for him to be able to complete college, as he was in top half of class. “I have always been in supervisory positions and worked long hours. However those three years in the military were some of the best years of my life.” After college he worked at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio where they were attempting to develop a bomb accurate

to 500 feet. Later, after working for General Electric, Midlik had obtained the experience that brought him to Huntsville to work in the Huntsville aerospace program training astronauts. “We designed equipment, built it and checked out the spacecraft. I would fly from Huntsville to Houston to Cape Canaveral – following the astronauts to be sure all systems were in order.” As the space program began seeing layoffs, Midlik was advised by a friend to apply at Southern Company in Birmingham. This tip proved fortuitous, and he worked in the nuclear division, designing heating, ventilation and A/C systems until his retirement in 1988. Midlik met his wife, Mollie, in 1991 at a dance. Today they enjoy ballroom dancing together and belong to the Concordia Club. Confessing to having learned to polka at the tender age of three, Midlik began taking dance lessons to expand his repertoire while still in the USAF in Ft. Worth, Tx. There he learned the Rumba, Samba, Foxtrot, and won a dance contest around 1948 with the grand prize of $25 worth of dance lessons. Today Midlik’s hobbies/passions are meeting with the Pel-

ham Senior Center men’s group, which he says is “a steady group of educated retirees who discuss a variety of subjects and the only place I know where you can talk religion and politics and not get anybody mad!” He is also devoted to gardening and is raising a fine crop of five different tomatoes, squash

and hot banana peppers. The deer, unfortunately, have eaten all his green peppers and the birds, that seem to sniff a ripening tomato from afar, are not necessarily deterred by the large rubber snakes strategically placed in the garden. In recent years, he and Mollie have traveled extensively. “I have been to Europe so many times; Rome is my favorite city and Italian food is always enjoyable.” They have also visited Buenos Aires, Argentina, and traveled to Tokyo, Japan, Hong Kong and China. More recently, they traveled on a bus tour of Mackinac Island and Ontario, Canada. Perhaps Bill can attribute his good health and longevity to the 2,000 quarts of vegetables and fruit his mom canned for the family each year. “One year,” he recalls, “she gave half our pantry away to victims of the Johnstown flood. I said ‘mom, you’re giving all that away?’ She said, ‘yes, son, I am, they need it.’”

Established in 2009, Janson Richardson, his daughter Ada Pritchett, Bill Peck, Martin Benson, Leslie Elder and Wallace Lee meet each Monday morning between 9 and 12 p.m. to share their expertise with

anyone who cares to stop in. If you are unemployed or under-employed, contact them. A Jobs Concerns Ministry volunteer will ask you to fill out an application and talk with you about your resume and experience. You may also email your resume to job.fbcpelham@gmail.com. Once in the system, you will begin receiving email updates on jobs to connect to potential employers and related information. “About 400 people have come through this free program. Some people don’t know how to look for a job,” noted Ada Pritchett, who brings her background in HR to the group. “We provide a list of local job search websites and encourage the use of LinkedIn as a tool. We will give you information on ways to make LinkedIn work for you.” “Labor statistics do not address the under-employed. We know that to be in survival mode is a daunting experience,” said Martin Benson. The Jobs Concerns Ministry works with all ages, from recent college graduates to those who need to think about a new career path or are older, but want to remain active. One resource is AWARE/Positive Maturity (Aging Workers Are Reliable Employees) “Encouragement is essential,” said Janson Richardson, “and this is a faith-based ministry. We feel prayer support is essential. Both the church staff and a men’s prayer group hold those who come to us for counsel. We also partner with the Alabaster Career Center that provides resources such as Job Search Techniques, Interviewing Skills, Communication Skills, Mock Interviews and Individual and Group Counseling sessions.” The Job Concerns Ministry will lead you to focus. “Ask yourself, where am I on my job campaign? What do I really want to do?” suggests Ada Pritchett. “You must dedicate yourself to organization. You can’t just sit back—you must be proactive.”

Oak Mountain State Park Alabama’s largest state park forms the northeastern section of the city of Pelham since annexation by the city in the 1990s. Pelham was a small, unincorporated town when the park was created in 1927 by the State Land Act’s grant of 940 acres. Improvements to the park were made during the Depression of the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1943 the National Park Service deeded some 8000 acres to the park from an acquisition in the previous decade. Further improvements such as the golf course and the demonstration farm were made in the 1970s. The largest state park also has the state’s largest wildlife rehabilitation center. Thanks to A.J. Tim Vakakes follows dad’s footsteps: Gets football head coaching position For Pelham’s Tim Vakakes, Jackson-Olin’s new head football coach, playing and coaching are a way of life. Long before playing football, basketball and wrestling at Homewood HS, he watched his dad. “I grew up chasing dad’s games at PHS,” Tim said alluding to the days when Jim was an assistant coach at Pelham High. “I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps from a young age.” His dad, the venerable Jim Vakakes, heavily influenced his philosophy about coaching and life. “I liked the impact my dad had on the kids he coached,” Tim continued, saying he hopes to do the same. “I just want the kids I’m coaching to know that they can reach out to me at any time. I want to be there for them.” Tim began by helping with spring training during his father’s first year as head coach at Fairfield High School in 2001 while working on his Bachelors in PE at Auburn. After graduating, he became head football coach at Forrest Hills Middle School for a year, where he built a program that fed into Fairfield. When his players moved up, he followed, and assisted his father for 11 seasons, helping turn the Fairfield program around. Tim started on defense, but eventually took over as offensive coordinator. Their hard work soon paid off; the Tigers went from a winless season the year before they got there to seven 5A state playoffs berths in nine years. After Jim retired in 2011, Tim went back to school at UAB. “I got

my master’s degree in administration because I would like to be a principal in some distant future,” he explained. “But I want to coach for many years first.” He married his longtime girlfriend, the former Alexis Patelos, who he’d had his eye on since watching her in the nursery at the Greek Orthodox Church when he was just a young tyke himself. The couple recently celebrated their second anniversary. The pair looks forward to celebrating another big event in a few months—the first birthday of their son, Sam. Last year, Tim coached quarterbacks at McAdory, but when he was offered the head coaching position at Jackson-Olin in April, he accepted on the spot. Although his dad is retired, Tim says Jim wants to be a part of his new program at JacksonOlin. “He wants his own office with a coffee maker. He wants to be near the laundry room, and he says he’s not getting to school before Noon,” Tim laughed. Jim gave him advice on being a head coach: “Don’t be one of those young coaches that thinks they have all the answers; Focus on the kids, and the relationships you have with people.” Tim plans to do that by teaching his players to be good people. “If they focus on being a man,” he explained, “football will come naturally.” Keep an eye on Jackson-Olin’s football team over the next few years—smart money says the program is due a big turn-around. Best of luck,Tim!

Maplewood Lane Maplewood Lane is an Assisted Living/Respite Care facility that opened in 1995 and is licensed by the State of Alabama as an Assisted Living Facility. Our highly trained, experienced and caring staff truly enjoys caring for the elderly and adults with special needs. Residents will be encouraged to live an active life through the many social activities we offer. We provide a homelike atmosphere with professional care based on years of experience. What this means is that by entrusting your care, or the care of your loved one to us, you will receive personalized care in a smaller community (16 units) with a level of professional expertise typically found only in large facilities. We like to think

we provide the best of both worlds. We never forget that caring for the elderly and their families is a very personal experience for all of us! We recognize that frequently, elderly individuals need a few weeks or even a few months of assistance as they recuperate from illnesses or accidents. There may also be a need for some individuals to give their families a break from daily care if they are living with them. Finally, there may simply be a desire to “try us out” without feeling that there is any long-term commitment. Because of these unique requests, we also offer temporary or short-term residency options known as Respite Care (based on room availability).
