FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
Once again, I extend my congratulations to our graduates, Pelham High School Class of 2014; the last class to graduate under the tutelage of the Shelby County Board of Education. As of July 1, 2014, a new era begins in our city with the Pelham Board of Education at the helm of Pelham City Schools. Good luck graduates, and thanks to the PBOE for a lot of heavy lifting in a very short period of time. What can be better than Music, Food and Fireworks? On Thursday, July 3, “Fire on the Water” will be brought to you by Regions Bank, Oak Mountain State Park and the City of Pelham. I’m hopeful we have laid the foundation for a new
relationship with Oak Mountain State Park and a new tradition in Fireworks to begin our Independence Day Celebration each year. The party starts in the evening and the fireworks show around 9:00 pm. Carpool if you can and save money. Five bucks per carload! Those of you who attended our – first ever – Pelhambration last year certainly remember what a great time we had. Well, if you haven’t heard, our summer celebration has been replaced this year with the Pelham Golden Jubilee, in recognition of the City of Pelham’s 50th Birthday. A brief history lesson from Pelham’s Order of Incorporation:
. . . that an election would be held at the Public School in Pelham (where city hall is today) on July 7, 1964, to determine if such area shall be incorporated. Said notice also stated that the plat (plot of land) showing the limits of the proposed Town of Pelham was on file in the office of the Judge of Probate in Shelby County. Such notice was also posted in three public places within the limits of the proposed town. Said election was conducted as foresaid, and within five days after the election, said inspectors, Paul Yeager, J.T. Shelton and Carrie Sue Hinds, certified the results thereof to be as follows: For Incorporation – 121 Against Incorporation – 20 It appears to the Court that all requirements of law have been met and that by virtue of the proceeding outlines above, that the Town of Pelham, Alabama, shall be incorporated. IT IS THEREFORE CONSIDERED, ORDERED, ADJUDGED, AND DECREED
BY THE COURT that the inhabitants of the hereinafter designated territory in Shelby County, Alabama, are incorporated as a town, and the name of said town shall be PELHAM, and said town shall be vested with all the rights and powers granted under the laws of ALABAMA, given this day, July 12, 1964. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PELHAM! Come celebrate with us July 11-12, 2014 at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena. There will be music, shopping, food, ice skating, a youth zone and video games. Events will begin Friday evening and end Saturday night with a free concert at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre. Come celebrate Pelham’s 50th Birthday with your friends and neighbors. I will see you there. Yours Truly,

FROM COUNCILMAN SCOTT Once again, I feel honored to have the opportunity to be the Pelham City Council member selected to represent the council in this edition of our city magazine. The Pelham City Council would like to join the Mayor and the Pelham Beautification Board in inviting you to attend Pelham’s Golden Jubilee slated to take place on Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12 at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. Within the pages of this edition you will find a full page advertisement giving you the times and a list of activities that you and your family can enjoy as we all celebrate the 50th anniversary of our city. I look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate this major milestone birthday and continue planning for the next great 50 years. For many years, residents have asked about having a fireworks event in Pelham to celebrate the Fourth of July. The city has partnered with Oak Mountain State Park to present a spectacular fireworks program on the evening of July 3rd at the park. Come join us as we kick off the Fourth of July celebrations with this program. July 1, 2014 marks another

landmark day in the history of Pelham with the first operating day of the Pelham School System. Our council did its job and appointed a most qualified and enthusiastic board, and the Pelham Board of Education has done an exceptional job in hiring some of the top education talent in the Southeast. The new Pelham BOE and the school system employees have plans in place to begin school cleanup and renovation on July 1. Teachers, students and parents will find our schools in better shape than they have been in years when they return to school in August. In the months to come, look for more exciting news regarding our school system as it truly becomes a system of excellence. You may wonder why this article features a photograph of me standing on Highway 31 in the heart of Pelham’s business district. I asked to have this photo included as a means to emphasize how important the Highway 31 corridor is to the vitality of the city of Pelham. The Highway 31 corridor, known to many as Pelham Parkway, stretches from the southern border of Hoover
down to the northernmost part of Alabaster. This stretch of road features every type of retail establishment and service provider that can be found. Without this vital economic engine running through the middle of Pelham, we would not be able to fund the daily services of the city and generate funds to allow our new school system to grow into one of the premier school systems in the state of Alabama. I believe it is time for city leaders and the citizens of Pelham to have serious discussions regarding what we see as we travel any section of Highway 31. Over the last few weeks, city leaders have begun the process of reviewing the condition of certain buildings along Highway 31 and the types of businesses one can find there. We made a major impact on Highway 31 when
the city purchased the old Moore–Handley Building and sold it to Summer Classics. The transformation of the building and the surrounding grounds is off to a great start, and we greatly anticipate the completion of Summer Classics’ construction, which will include a new showroom building at the front of the existing building. I would like to use this opportunity to throw out a challenge to you, the citizens of Pelham. I want to ask you to share with me or any other council person how you feel about the businesses found on Hwy 31. Do we have too many of a certain type of business? Do you believe that we have an image problem related to some businesses found on Hwy 31? What suggestion would you have on what could be done Continued on page 5

FROM PELHAM SCHOOL BOARD VICE PRESIDENT PAUL HOWELL
This Father’s Day, I carved out a few minutes of my time to reflect upon my father and his role and impact in my life. Dr. Walter G. Howell is a professor of history, having earned his PhD from the University of Georgia. He loves reading fiction and non-fiction for pleasure while reading volumes for his research in order to thoroughly understand the historical aspects of events and circumstances that are critical to his writings. He has a new book due out in the fall on the History of Clinton, Mississippi, where he taught college classes for decades. His impact on me began in 1977 when we participated in an Outward Bound program in Maine and then spent an afternoon at West Point, the United States Military Academy. His words that remain with me today are, “If I had known about this place growing up, this is where I would have attended college.” I graduated from West Point in 1985 and served ten years active duty before entering the Reserves. Both my parents are educators; my mother taught 7th and 8th grade home economics for 30 years in Jackson, Mississippi public schools. Education was important in my family because my grandparents
were not well educated. They lived during the depths of the Depression and firmly believed a good education would mitigate economic deprivation for their children. The next generation of Howells all received the highest levels of public education. Public education is one of the principle foundations of this society. My parents instilled this belief in me, and I know that public education is the basis of where our focus needs to be in order for our schools to reach the top. Pelham City Schools are now officially opening on July 1, 2014 and with this comes excitement and joy for most, but concern for others. Excitement and joy of what can be the future catalyst for this city’s continued growth and prosperity. The concern is centered on ensuring we get it right the first time. We have ensured our success by hiring some of the brightest and best in the state: Dr. Tim Alford and Dr. Suzanne Freeman have laid the foundation for Dr. Scott Coefield - Superintendent; Dr. Jason Yohn - Principal of Pelham High School; Lauren Butts - Chief School Financial Officer, Dr. Elisabeth David – Director of Curriculum and

Instruction; and Jim Toney Director of Operations. The most frequent question I get today is, “Are we going to be like Mountain Brook or Vestavia?” My answer is, “no,” we have to figure out what is best for Pelham, since our student composition is not parallel to other schools, we have a much different make up, comprised of students from around the world. As many as 27 different languages are spoken at homes in Pelham. We have a rich and broad demographic background here, and with that we will find our path to success. My personal aspiration is that Pelham becomes known for its top language schools. I hope we can offer Spanish as early as 1st grade as well as Latin, French, and Italian by ninth grade. Studying foreign languages is the most effective avenue to develop a command of the English language. Having a second language gives one a decided edge in the job market. The one mark I want us to make on our students is how important education is to fulfilling a rich and successful life. Not in terms of monetary wealth, but a rich and successful life of community involvement and development, a lifelong commitment to learning, and a thirst for understanding that is never quenched. Dianna, my wife, and I are blessed to have two children that have graduated from Pelham schools. Our oldest child, Kristen Howell, is a
college graduate. She is bilingual and teaches ESL in Orlando, Florida as a volunteer while working at one of the most cutting edge technology businesses in the US, Photon-X. Nathan Howell, our second child, received an academic scholarship in engineering to Auburn. Ian Howell, our third child, will start the school year at Riverchase Middle School. All three are avid readers and received a high quality education from Pelham schools. A great foundation has been laid; what we must do now is build upon that foundation to make Pelham truly unique in the state and country. Great leaders surround themselves with great people. We have great leaders in Pelham City Schools. I call upon all of you, especially our community leaders and parents, to get involved with our schools. We need your support, and we need your input in order to make our schools and children the very best they can possibly be. We are at a critical junction in the life of this community. The right choices now will help ensure success in the future. We already have an undoubtedly distinct community with Oak Mountain State Park, Pelham Racquet Club, Ballantrae Golf Club, and the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. Let us now strive for the asterisk by our schools with the caption: “Best in the State and Best in the Country.”
Best Regards,
Paul
PBOE hires director of curriculum and director of operations for schools Dr. Elisabeth Davis was approved as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Pelham City Schools in the Board of Education’s June 16 meeting. The educator has spent the last three years as the Assistant Superintendent of Tuscaloosa City Schools. Dr. Coefield said she has the “greatest knowledge and experience” for the job out of all the applicants. Dr. Davis graduated from Jacksonville State University with a BS in Secondary Education: English Language Arts. She received her MA in Secondary Education: English Language Arts as well as an administrative certificate from UAB. She attended the University of Montevallo for her Ed.S. in Educational Leadership, and Samford University for her Ed.D in Educational Leadership. She taught in Shelby County for 13 years as an English teacher and coach at Chelsea Middle School, assistant principal at Columbiana Middle School, and Middle School Program Specialist and School Improvement Specialist at the Central Office. “At Chelsea, I had an immediate passion for teaching students how to write and communicate effectively. From that point, I wanted to learn all that I could about curriculum and how to be an effective teacher, which then led me to want to be an instructional leader at the administrative level,” Dr. Davis explained. “I also enjoy working with other teachers and curriculum leaders across the state and country as
we continuously learn how to prepare our students for the next level.” She is married to Todd Davis, and they have two children: 5-year-old Caroline and 4-yearold Hudson. “I was intrigued with the opening of a new school system, along with the support from the community for the Pelham City Schools,” Dr. Davis said. “I am excited about being a part of a new system but also working with administrators, teachers, and a community that has high expectations for the system. These are exciting times in Pelham, and I am thrilled and honored to be part of this process!” In that same PBOE meeting, Jim Toney was recommended
by Superintendent Coefield and approved by the school board as the new Pelham City Schools Director of Operations. He has past experience specializing in school safety, and a very thorough knowledge of school policies and procedures. “No one knows more about school policy than Jim,” said Superintendent Coefield. “He’s written many of the laws himself.” As the Director of Operations for a new school system, Jim will have a lot on his plate. “It’s hard to explain what the job is, especially when a system is just starting like this,” he stated in an interview. “There are a lot of new projects coming up, and I will do whatever I need to do to get everything done.” Jim has spent the last 15 years
at the Alabama Department of Education, where he worked as an Education Specialist in the Prevention and Support Services office. Jim stated he is excited for the chance to build this school system properly. With Jim’s appointment as Director of Operations, Dr. Jason Yohn (who originally held that position) was free to ne appointed as principal of Pelham High School. John Prestridge was also named his assistant principal. More information can be found on these men in our profiles on them in the next edition. About these four new hires, Rick Rhoades said, “Quite a distinguished group, for sure. I’m excited about what they will bring to the table and what they will do for our young people.”

Commercial Beautification Award Pelham City Hall In every issue, we feature residential and commercial beautification award winners to shine the limelight on residents and business owners in Pelham who go above and beyond to make the city beautiful. The members of the Pelham Beautification Board keep an eye out for the best and most colorful landscaping and gardens around for these awards, but that is far from the only task these hardworking citizens do for our city. The biggest challenge the board has faced is planning and preparing for the city’s annual summer festivals, including the upcoming Golden Jubilee July 11-12. Everything from food and info booths, bands, beverages, and birthday cake to decorations, advertising and volunteers have been discussed by
the board. Make sure to be at the Civic Center and Ice Arena before 11am on Saturday, July 12 for the cutting of the city’s 50th Birthday Cake at the Golden Jubilee event. Along with the kids’ games at the outdoor carnival that day, Babe Ruff will be on hand for pictures and autographs and a wind dancer will perform. Vendors, booths and free skating take place inside the arena. Finally, it’s no surprise the board that so regularly judges landscaping also had a beautiful bit of gardening done for
Pelham’s 50th birthday, as seen above and on the cover. City groundskeeper Mickey Dunaway worked with Neville Peacock on a design for the front of City Hall. Dainty pink begonias set off the background, with subdued dusty millers spelling out “PELHAM” and “YEARS” on either side of a lovely arrangement of wizard jade coleus, chosen to represent Pelham’s green for the “50.” Mickey had seven years of experience as a
horticulturist in Birmingham before coming to Pelham. “It’s been an honor planning the Golden Jubilee, and we hope Pelham residents will come out to help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city,” said Beautification Board member Moseley Johnson. Neville Peacock agreed, adding, “We worked very hard to have an event for all ages, and we hope that visitors from various cities will join us in celebration.”
Board of Education gives recognition to Dr. Tim Alford, Suzanne Freeman The Pelham Board of Education recently said goodbye to two of their hardest workers through these first hectic months of building the school system. Interim Superintendent Dr. Tim Alford vacated his position when Dr. Tim Coefield was approved as the permanent Superintendent on May 27.
Dr. Suzanne Freeman, hired in January as an Educational Consultant, leaves this temporary position working with Pelham City Schools to take over as the first Superintendent of the Pike Road School District. During the June 16 PBOE meeting, board member Angie Hester presented Tim and
6 PelhamOnline.com / Summer 2014
Suzanne with beautiful glass plaques as tokens of appreciation for all of their hard work and late nights working with the school system and board of education. “Tim and Suzanne, we really want to thank you,” PBOE President Rick Rhoades said. “At a time when people needed to stand in the gap, you stood there strong for us.” “It’s been a great opportunity, it’s been a lot of fun,” Suzanne said. “I
absolutely loved working with Tim. Lauren has been like a sister, we bonded immediately. I applaud the work you are doing here.” Tim also praised all of the hard work by the board and city so far, especially Dr. Coefield. “We were building a house and needed a good foundation, but also wanted to leave as much of the paint colors and countertop choices to the permanent superintendent as possible.” “A building is not a home without love and support inside it,” he continued. “This school district’s ultimate success will come with those day-to-day, moment-to-moment interactions between teachers and students. I look forward to sitting back and seeing how great this school system will become.” Suzanne agreed, adding, “Part of my heart will always be with the Panthers.”

Birmingham Magazine readers select Oak Mountain Orthodontics Best in Birmingham Birmingham magazine and Alabama Baby & Child magazine have come together to bring the Parents’ Choice Awards to the Birmingham area for three years. More than 5,000 people answered the online survey, entering the names of Birmingham businesses they think are the best in 81 different categories. The 2014 Parents’ Choice Award for Best Birmingham Orthodontist was given to Pelham’s own Dr. Priscila Denny of Oak Mountain Orthodontics. “We told everyone who came through the office, ‘hey, vote for me’, but I didn’t think I was going to win!” Priscila laughed. “It is very exciting.” To her young clients, their parents and anyone else who knows Dr. Denny, this award
comes as no surprise. Since opening her practice in Pelham, she has made professional and friendly relationships across the community. Priscila greatly appreciates all of the many students and their parents who support her business and trust her with something so precious as their children’s health. “I would like the people of Pelham and Helena to know that this award means a lot to me, because it is the Parent’s Choice Awards and it is the public who chooses the winners,” she said. She explains that having children has shown her just how much trust parents put in their children’s doctors. “To know that all these parents put that trust in me, for their children, it means so much.”
Dr. Denny opened her first office in Pelham in February 2006 on Old Montgomery Highway near Riverchase Middle School. This was followed in June 2010 by the opening of her Helena office, next door to Zone 1 in the Publix shopping center, at the corner of Highway 17 and Coalmont Road. She and the Oak Mountain Orthodontics team still serve clients a full range of orthodontic services; traditional metal braces, invisible braces, ceramic braces and more from both locations. “And, in the near future, the office will host movie memorabilia from Marilyn Monroe, among other great actors and actresses,” Dr. Denny excitedly announced.
If you have a child in need of braces, look no further than the closest office of Dr. Denny and Oak Mountain Orthodontics. “My team and I do our best to give parents a high degree of confidence in what we are doing for their children,” Priscila promises. PBOE approved Separation Agreement from Shelby County School System— city schools, staff officially transferred to Pelham City Schools July 1 As of the June 5 Pelham Board of Education meeting, the city is finally past one of the hardest parts of starting Pelham City Schools: negotiating the Separation Agreement with the Shelby County School System. In that meeting, board members voted to approve the 50 plus page long separation agreement both systems have been working on for months, officially separating Pelham City Schools from the Shelby County School System. The transfer officially took place July 1, said Whit Colvin of the Bishop, Colvin, Johnson and Kent law firm. In the transfer, all public schools in the city came under the direction of the PBOE, and all faculty at Pelham schools came under the employment of the Pelham City School System. Students enrolled in Pelham schools, including unincorporated Shelby County students, are now transferred to the Pelham
City School System. “The general rule is, if you live within the city, you go to Pelham City Schools,” Whit said. But, as often happens, this rule does have its exceptions. The Linda Nolen Learning Center is one exception to the rule, as it will continue to be a part of the Shelby County School System. Under the separation agreement, Pelham students who need to attend the LNLC can enroll or continue to attend school there. Sections of the separation agreement that took more nego-
tiating concerned students living in Pelham who attend Chelsea or Oak Mountain schools. According to the agreement, students who attended these schools during the 2013-2014 academic year and those starting there in the 20142015 academic year may continue there through graduation. There are also some Pelham students currently attending Alabaster schools, and they may continue to attend there according to the separation agreement between the Alabaster City Schools and the Shelby County
Board of Education. Finally, Pelham students currently enrolled at the Shelby County College and Career Center, as well as those planning to enroll for the 2014-2015 academic year, may continue attending at no extra cost to the affected parents. Timing for the separation agreement could not have been better, as it did meet the statemandated July 1 separation date. If this deadline had not been met, the Pelham City School system would have had to wait until July 1, 2015 to separate. Interim Superintendent Tim Alford praised the hardworking PBOE and Pelham City Council, explaining he met with the leaders of another recentlyformed school system who told him it was impossible to have Pelham schools ready by the 2014-2015 academic year. “You have done the impossible,” he said with a smile.

Lady Panthers’ Amy Sullivan retires from coaching The Pelham High School softball team is undergoing an overhaul just like the rest of the school system since Head Coach Amy Sullivan announced her retirement in May. After coaching for 17 years, even the energetic Amy needs a break. “I knew I couldn’t coach forever,” she said, laughing. “But I didn’t know prior to the season that I would retire.” Her family lives in Georgia, including her parents, who have had health issues this year. “I felt like it was important for me to be able to spend time with my family and be there any time I was needed to help out.” With her passion for softball and coaching, she always dedicated herself to Pelham’s softball programs and players 100%. “I felt like it was time to step away and take a break. The timing just seemed to be right,” she explained. “I’ve left Pelham softball while it’s at the top, and I wouldn’t have done it any other way,” she continued proudly. Meet Jason Beasley—New executive director of the Pelham YMCA "This is coming home for me," said Jason Beasley, who was recently appointed as the new Executive Director of the Pelham YMCA. Originally from Vestavia, he has spent the last 4 of his 18 years with the YMCA as an executive director in Baton Rouge. "It has always been a dream and plan to end up back in Birmingham," he continued. Jason is "always a fan of youth sports," and took part in them frequently as a boy, but even as young as eight, he imagined himself going to college at the University of Alabama for marketing so he could one day work for Coca-Cola and be a part of their international team. Once at school in Tuscaloosa, he quickly took a part-time job at the YMCA out of necessity and it soon grew to became his life passion. By his junior year, now a Business Administration and Marketing major, Jason accepted his first full-time position with the Y. He graduated in 1999 and then moved to Montgomery, where he continued his work with the Y and his children, Jonathan (who is 13) and Catherine (10) and Joshua (7) were born. The Pelham YMCA is currently working on its annual fundraising campaign called the “Annual Campaign for a Healthy Community” to help Jason and his YMCA realize their mission to never turn people away from the Y for inability to pay. If you know of
Jason's passion for fundraising, it's easy to see why Pelham is a good fit for him. "We have a great need here to reach out to the growing non English speaking residents in our Pelham community," he opined. Thus, non-English speaking programs, partnerships, and school readiness programs have become a top priority. These programs are useful, as they both teach and perpetuate the English language for children as well as help their parents understand and learn local customs and cultural norms. Other changes have been made at the Y for Shelby County's ever-growing population… "We have had a 31% increase in enrollment for children's spring sports programming and in senior
participation," Jason said. “We plan to continue expanding sports offerings, senior programming opportunities, as well as begin a new adaptive swim program for people with special needs.” Jason wants all citizens to feel comfortable in and around water. Specially trained teachers will help special-needs children and adults to do just that. The Y indoor pool is also currently being used by a Special Olympics group for Alabama athletes every Wednesday. All in all, Pelham raised only $88,000 and gave away $178,989 in aid last year to low-income families to help offset the cost of programming and give them the ability to join their local YMCA to live a healthier life. Jason says the
need, and the amount of aid that will be given out this year will far surpass last year's amounts. The Y is committed to keep educating the community about what the Y can do for you, and they are always looking for new volunteers, donors, and grant opportunities. "This way, we can continue meeting community needs and serving all of Pelham’s residents!" Jason emphasized. Pelham's prior YMCA director, Lane Vines, vacated the position in December when he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the Birmingham YMCA. We wish Lane luck in his future endeavors, and welcome Jason home to Pelham! Check out the Pelham YMCA today and find out why “the Y is So Much More than a Gym!”

“Brother Mike” Shaw retires after 35 years at Pelham First Baptist He preached his first sermon from their pulpit on April Fool’s Day in 1979, and has now delivered his last as the full-time senior pastor at Pelham First Baptist Church. Pastor Mike Shaw has seen and done a lot in his 35 years in ministry in Pelham. He has served as the city chaplain, presided over building campaigns at two different locations, and helped other churches plant their roots. He has performed the ceremonies for countless baptisms and weddings, including the nuptials of former Crimson Tide wide receiver and coach and current Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. Brother Mike, as he is fondly called, moved his family to Pelham when there were just two restaurants operating in the city. “You had two choices of where to eat at lunch – Fran’s Restaurant and one called the Pig and Whistle. Fran’s was also open for breakfast, but only the Pig was open for supper,” remembers Brother Mike. “This was when I65 ended at 31 in Hoover, so you had to travel Highway 31 to get to Pelham. We didn’t have many businesses then because the sewer couldn’t support it.”
challenges and celebrations that come with the job of pastoring a large church. Among those challenges was the building of not one, but two new church facilities. Shortly after arriving in Pelham, he began raising the money to build a new facility to accommodate growth at the old Church Street location next to the Pelham Police Station. That building was dedicated in 1984. The 66-year-old pastor smiles as he recalls some of the people he has known over the years through his church. Miss Minnie Oates was one of those characters he enjoyed reminiscing about. “She was in the Altheia Sunday School class, a senior adult ladies class. Most were widows who had many great stories.” One of his favorites was how they used the creek behind Miss Oates’ house to baptize parishioners. “She’s actually the reason the old church had a steeple. She called me one day and said she lived so close to the church and still couldn’t see it. Well, I said, what did she need me to do and she said she wanted to know what a steeple would cost. Well, we checked it out and she made it happen.” Still laughing, he added

BEGINNINGS
A.J. Wright Most of us may associate our city with only its recent history. After all, Pelham was not incorporated until 1964. Its population was just 654 then. Most of the town’s growth has taken place since the 1984. Yet a community named Pelham existed in this location since the early 1870s; a post office was first established here in 1873. Pelham’s history actually goes back to the very early days of
the state. Alabama achieved statehood in December, 1819. Shelby County was created in the Alabama Territory inFebruary, 1818; the county is named for Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky and a hero of the Battle of King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War. In 1820, a county courthouse was built by Thomas A. Rogers, Alabama’s first Secretary of State, in a community known as Shelbyville.

Six years later, a permanent county seat was established in the southern part of the county at Columbiana. Shelbyville remained tiny, and after the Civil War–some accounts say 1867–the town was renamed after Confederate hero Major “Gallant” John Pelham. John Pelham was born in what is now Calhoun County on September 7, 1838. He was the son of Atkinson Pelham, a
physician, and Martha McGehee Pelham. His siblings included brothers William and Peter. A fictionalized account of the family, Growing Up in Alabama, was published by Mary Sergent in 1988. As the Civil War loomed, Pelham resigned from West Point just weeks before his graduation. He distinguished himself with an artillery battery at the first Battle of Manassas, and J.E.B. Stuart appointed him captain of a six-gun battery with his cavalry. Pelham participated in some 60 battles under Stuart, and his contribution to the Confederate victory at Fredericksburg led Robert E. Lee to dub him “the Gallant Pelham.” He died at the age of 24 on March 17, 1863, at the Battle of Kelly’s Ford in Virginia. Pelham is buried in the Jacksonville City Cemetery, where a large monument marks his grave. Our Pelham is not the only location with that name in Alabama; there is a Pelham Heights in Calhoun County and another Pelham in Choctaw County. Communities named Pelham exist in Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, New Hampshire, New York and Massachusetts, too. There are also numerous streets named Pelham around the country. Very little history for our Pelham has been gathered for the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We know that at least five physicians practiced here during this period, though. Eli Forest Denson, a Vanderbilt graduate, arrived around 1879. Another Vanderbilt alumni, Joseph Madison Johnson, and William R. King Johnson (perhaps a brother) who graduated from the Atlanta Medical College, set up practices in the early 1880s. Andrew Wailes Horton of the Medical College of Alabama began practice in Pelham around 1901. How long these doctors remained in the
area is not known. Buried in the Pelham Community Cemetery, which was established in the early 1840s, is John Payne, M.D., who died in 1901. The cemetery is located at the intersection of County Highway 105 (Bearden Road) and Industrial Park Road. The Alabama State Gazetteer and Business Directory 18871888 lists a number of the businesses and professional men in Pelham, which had about 250 residents at the time. Included were a postmaster, constable, hotel owner, dentist, shoemaker, blacksmith, four general store owners, a lumber yard, three ministers, and one physician, William Rufus K. Johnson. At least one of the merchants, W.S. Cross, was profiled in depth in the Memorial Record of Alabama published in 1893. A Shelby County native, Cross started a small store in Pelham in 1881. He did well enough to buy and sell at a profit some Birmingham real estate and then bought more property in Pelham, “which he has improved with dwellings and store houses.” In 1880, Cross married Ann McWhorter, a Butler County native; by 1893, the couple had five children. Pelham appears on Joseph Squire’s “Map of Helena and Environs” from 1885 and on a 1937 Shelby County map issued by the state highway department. What is probably the city’s oldest building, the Pelham Railroad Depot, dates from about 1900. The structure was moved from its original location next to CR 52, renovated and placed in City Park in August 1988 where it served as home to the Pelham Chamber of Commerce and today houses the Pelham Parks and Rec Dept. From the 1930s until at least the 1950s, Shelby County Voting District 17 was known as the “Pelham District.” Development of Oak Mountain State Park began in 1935 under the direction of engineer W.J. Connell using the labor of 180
young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Many of these youths were from New York City and getting their first taste of rural America. Several schools have been located in Pelham. Rutherford High School opened in the 1870s. This structure, which had one large room and a smaller music room, was destroyed by a storm in 1909. The
Pelham School, a two-story wooden building, opened sometime after and was replaced in 1936 by a one-story school with four rooms, an auditorium, and a lunch room. Located on the site of the current city hall, the building was used as city offices after Valley Elementary opened in 1964 until it was torn down in 1973. Today’s Pelham High School opened in 1974. Efforts to organize churches in Pelham began before 1900. A Methodist church, located for over a century at the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 31 and Shelby Co. 52, was dedicated in November, 1898, and also served Baptists and Presbyterians. A
Baptist church formed in 1908, but became inactive the following year. Several other attempts to organize a Baptist church continued into the 1930s. On July 7, 1964, an incorporation election was held at the Pelham School. Many residents were afraid the nearby city of Alabaster would try to annex the area. Over ninety
percent of eligible voters, one hundred and fortyone people, voted; one hundred and twenty-one were in favor of incorporation. Three days later the “Order of Incorporation” was filed at the Probate Office, and Pelham’s legal existence as a municipality began. The incorporated area included the Pelham and Keystone communities, Fungo Hollow, and part of the Helena rural route. In the fifty years since that vote, Pelham has had only five mayors: Paul Yeager, Sr. (1964-1976), Alton Burk Dunaway (19761984), Bobby Hayes (19842008), Don Murphy (20082012), and the current mayor and former Pelham Fire Chief,
Major “Gallant” John Pelham
Gary Waters, elected 2012. In December, 1964, Pelham hired its first policeman, L.A. “Buddy” Wilkinson, who was paid $100 a month. Initially the fire department was a volunteer one; the first chief was Roy Jowers, followed by O.C. Ray, who served from 1966 to 1977. In March of that year W.A. Bryars became the city’s first paid chief. The first city clerk, Willie Mae Dennis, held the post until her retirement in 1984. During her first few years, she worked part-time for the city. And my how our town has grown over the past 30 years. Since Mayor Hayes and the council installed a sewage system in 1984, growth has blossomed. This move enabled not only expanded residential construction, but also brought about explosive commercial development along Pelham Parkway and Cahaba Valley Road. Recent developments on Huntley Parkway continue the strong growth trend, and a newly appointed Commercial Development Authority will no doubt take the city to new heights on the growth curve. The latest U.S. Census Bureau population estimate for the city was on July 1, 2012, when there were 22,012 individuals who called the city home. This year, the Pelham City Council decided the city would be better served by creating its own school system and broke away from the Shelby County School system under which it had been governed. This upcoming school year will be the new system’s first to actually operate its own schools. The city’s first official school superintendant is Dr. Scott Coefield who took the reins from the interim head, Dr. Tim Alford. As big as it may grow, Pelham’s city government will remain firm to their belief in its slogan, “Where the People Make the Difference.” Because they do.

and pack them for preservation; beaded garments that are delicate—we inspect every garment that comes in to see that it is handled properly.” “My employees here are excellent pressers, the best I have seen in all my years,” Choi remarked. Pelham Cleaners handles bedding, small rugs and furs and are expert at spot and stain removal. The equipment is first rate, German and Japanese made. And the store interior is open, so if you go inside, the work in progress can be seen. A drive through is, of
course, available and you will be greeted courteously by Miss Yuli or Miss Alexa. A fire several years ago took its toll on the business, Choi said, and the former owners moved to Mississippi. The Choi family attends the Korean Presbyterian Church, and it was through connections there that they came to purchase the two dry cleaning establishments. “We were happy to move to the South,” Choi noted. “So many nice people; all my customers are appreciative and I am proud to say we have a high rate of satisfaction.”

Pelham Family Chiropractic opens in great new location on Pelham Pkwy! After sixteen years in the same location in Pelham, Dr. Denise Wheeler has just moved her practice, Pelham Family Chiropractic, down the road to her own building at 2717 Pelham Parkway, just a block north and across the street from CVS and
Louie’s Fine Foods. Her new location has a beautiful relaxing atmosphere and a lot more space for therapy and treatment rooms. She is pleased to introduce her new therapeutic massage therapist, Beth Marlowe, L.M.T. Dr. Wheeler just celebrated her Grand Reopening Day with free chiropractic adjustments and massages for patients. Her patients generously donated to her upcoming Swaziland mission trip, and they raised almost $500. She is offering a Grand Reopening Special, too, to celebrate her move. For a limited time, you may take advantage of a chiropractic exam with x-rays (if needed) and a one-hour massage for just $59 with the coupon below. Dr. Wheeler says, “We find that once patients come in and see how we take a genuine interest in their care and how
effective chiropractic treatment truly is, they find that there is another way to get out of pain beside drugs or surgery. Many have already given up hope and tried seemingly everything else but chiropractic. Many of our patients refer their family and friends to us for care.” Problems which can be successfully treated with chiropractic include: • Headaches • back pain • arm and shoulder pain • TMJ
• sciatica • bulging discs • arthritis • scoliosis • knee and hip pain • neck pain, and many others. If you are experiencing chronic pain, you owe it to yourself to explore and see what chiropractic care might be able to do for you. Call and make an appointment today with Dr. Denise Wheeler at Pelham Family Chiropractic at 988-9420. And be sure to take advantage of the great one-hour massage offered to new patients in the coupon below!

Grey Oaks—a stylish Pelham address It may have gotten off to a slow start, but construction at Grey Oaks subdivision is making up for lost time. Begun in 2007, only one home of the 500 acre project was completed before it fell victim to the economic downturn and laid dormant for about seven years, said Jack Donovan, the project builder for the subdivision. Though the market stalled, Donovan’s interest in the 650home community located on Shelby County 11, Pelham, never waned, Donovan said. “I was going to be one of the original builders and was so disappointed when the economy brought things to a standstill,” Donovan said. “Plus, I live in Oakland Hills, so Grey Oaks is at our backyard and, looking at it every day, I never stopped hoping to see it grow and be completed.” Donovan’s hope was put into motion when his company, Donovan Builders, successfully contracted with the developer for the entire project and began constructing Sector One in March 2013. All but five of the 45 home sites in that sector have been sold, and construction of Sector Two is well underway along with plans for a pool and pavilion, he said. According to Donovan, the Grey Oaks homes range in price from $270,000 to $400,000 and are traditional craftsman style with stone, brick and cedar-shake vinyl exteriors that are maintenance-free. Owners can choose slab or basement construction and two or threedoor garages. “They have custom cabinets, custom showers, crown molding, hardwood floors—everything you can imagine is going into these homes,” Donovan said. And the houses, sized from 2,100 to over 3,000 sq. ft., sit on wooded lots that range from one half to two acres. “That is unique
in Pelham,” Donovan said. The large lots and the privacy they offer were major selling points for Grant and Dawn Courtney, who purchased their home in Grey Oaks this spring. But the two said they also enjoy the friendliness that abounds in the growing neighborhood. “Since we moved in on May 2, we’ve had several other couples move in nearby, including one from Florida who came out to walk their dog and we spent an hour and a half visiting in the front yard,” said Grant Courtney. The Grey Oak location— about five miles between both I-65 and the U.S. 280 corridor— was also attractive to the Courtney’s. “We both work downtown, so our proximity to both Pelham and (U.S.) 280 is ideal,” Courtney said. “We love it.” Tim and Erika Funderburk love living in Grey Oaks, too. But it wasn’t always that way. The Funderburks purchased their home in 2008 and, for years, were the lone residents of the subdivision after construction halted with the slowed economy. “There was one other foundation laid but that was it and it was very isolated,” Tim Funderburk said. “In fact, the Pelham police knew we were out there and checked on us a lot. They really took care of us, thankfully.” But the final straw came one day in 2012. “We were driving to our house and our son, who was four then, said from the back seat, “Dad, we really don’t have a neighborhood,” and it broke our hearts,” Tim Funderburk said. Shortly after, the couple signed papers with a realtor to list their home for sale. “Literally, the next day, Jack Donovan was out there surveying and, upon making
inquiries, we found out they were going to resume building the neighborhood,” Funderburk said. “We put our paperwork on hold, then started getting neighbors, and we are staying and have no plans to move anywhere. Grey Oaks is everything we hoped for.” Donovan, too, sees Grey Oaks as a community that’s everything anyone can hope for. “Pelham is a wonderful city
with good government, services and a location that is bringing in new business and now a new school system so more and more, people are being drawn here,” Donovan said. “As Pelham grows, Grey Oaks will grow. No one can offer what we do.” For more information, call the Re/Max First Choice realtors: Francene Drexler at 965-2065; Annette Durrett at 243-9970; Karen Spann at 790-5113.

FlipSide Watersports attraction brings low-stress, high-adventure wake boarding to Oak Mountain State Park When Jeremy Talbot, a 3-event competition waterskier from Shreveport, LA, moved to Birmingham 12 years ago, he had no idea his meeting of Guntersville native and avid wakeboarder Josh White would be so serendipitous. The pair hit it off immediately, bonding over their shared love of “being out on the lake.” Some of the fastest-growing sports right now are on the water, with wakeboarding, kneeboarding and waterskiing gaining speed. New athletes could take up these sports every day, but that isn’t always an option. “It’s hard to get into, because it’s so expensive to get started,” Josh stated. “All my friends are wakeboarders, scattered at parks across the south,” he continued. “We would go visit other lakes that had these cable systems, which allow you to wakeboard or ski without a boat.” At the
time, there were several in Georgia, Florida, and more than a dozen in Texas, among many other states, but none in Alabama. “I wanted to bring it into my own backyard,” Josh said. “My idea of where the sport is going? To cables.” He said they’re less expensive and more accessible. About four years ago, Jeremy got married in the back of Oak Mountain State Park at Old Oak Mountain Lake. After the wedding and a lot of mountain biking throughout Oak Mountain, he began to realize, “It was the perfect place to bring cable watersports to Alabama.” Since then, he and Josh have been buying and learning the equipment and working with the Oak Mountain State Park executives and the Parks Department to bring this new attraction to the park. “The park has really gone above and beyond to help us get started.
30 PelhamOnline.com / Summer 2014
Pelham and Shelby County too; everyone has been amazing,” Josh said gratefully. Their two-tower, one-cable system with a 15-horsepower electric motor is now the longest 2.0 cable park on the continent, and just the start of Flip Side Watersports. Jeremy has plans to expand to 4-6 towers, which could serve up to eight riders at a time. Right now, their cable runs across Oak Mountain Lake. The Board Shop is located at the old Fishing Center on John Findlay III Drive, at the Highway 119 entrance to the park. The Board Shop has Hyperlight and Byerly wakeboards, kneeboards, skis, helmets and life jackets for rent for a Flip Side session, as well as drinks and snacks for anyone. There are two-hour, four-hour and all-day sessions, as well as season passes available. The guys ensure that someone who walks in with no knowledge will be up and at least
starting to stabilize within their first session. A clear section of water right under the cable is ideal for learning the sport, but ramps, sliders and other obstacles around the area can be used by pros or the competitive for tricks. “It’s only $45 to ride ALL DAY, which wouldn’t even buy the gas to get someone from Birmingham to a lake like Lay, Smith or Guntersville,” Josh said, explaining why Flip Side is a better alternative for enthusiasts. “$600 gets the rookie champ a full season pass, which, in a lot of cases, is less than one payment on a boat.” He concluded, “We just wanted to grow the sport and grow the park, and have a place for fellow boarders who just want to have a good time.” See www.FlipSideAL.com for more info on waivers, gear and prices. Their hours are 10:00am 8:00pm Monday - Sunday.

Residential Beautification Award 2647 Chandalar Lane A majestic corner yard is a show-stopper for all who drive past the Chandalar Lane culde-sac where Edward Brasher has spent over twenty-five years lovingly sculpting his vision. He recently added a tiered fountain to the circular pool and centerpiece of the front yard and repeats the shape in the peripheral planted beds anchored with dogwoods. The pool, lined and tiled by Edward, contains Purple Pixie Loropetalum alternated with
geraniums this summer. “I started out working for my daddy, who was a building contractor, when I was about that high,” Edward said, measuring to his waist, “so I’ve been doing this a long time. My first job was carrying a handful of nails to his carpenters.” Edward, who has a degree in building construction from Auburn, has both the eye and know-how to blend the landscaping elements in a pleasing way, and he cares for his yard personally, edging and fertilizing and mowing with a push mower the luxurious green Empire Zoysia grass. “I crawled on my hands and knees over the entire yard pulling the weeds recently,” he shared. The yard contains over
250 plants, and Edward can tell you the name of virtually all of them. There are Knock-out roses in red and yellow – already in a second blooming this year. This year he also added a color pop with yellow and red blanket flowers. Encore Azaleas are planted across the house front, and the yard also contains Snow azaleas, Gumpo azaleas and Formosa azaleas with their deep purple blooms. At the driveway is a cluster of George Taber azaleas. Earlier this spring, the fifty azaleas in the backyard were loaded with blooms as well as the two towering camellias. Thirteen mature dogwoods
shade the yard beneath the towering oak trees. Edward has also incorporated a naturalized area to the side where he spreads his grass cuttings and leaves. Edward cared for his wife Margean, who has Alzheimer’s, at home until last November; she is now in nursing home care. We offer Yard of the Month congratulations and commend Edward for his patience, believing he has elevated the meaning of “the good steward” and “caretaker” to new heights.

Tommy Johns gives Teen Boss Money Workshop to RMS students
Tommy Johns is a professional magician, mathematician, and, as he professes, “on my way to being a millionaire.” He gives fun, informative lectures about math, money and magic to middle and high school students in Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida panhandle. In the past year, he has retooled his lectures to include information on using libraries to learn more. Bringing his lectures, like the Teen Boss: Money
workshop, to schools and libraries is now funded through grants from Smart investing@ your library. Through one of these grants, received by the Pelham Public Library, Tommy gave two talks at Riverchase Middle School on Wednesday, April 23. The Teen Boss: Money lecture explains how easy it can be to save money and invest, even as a teenager. The other lecture, Card Magic, is aimed at a younger audience and focused on statistics and probability. “You use math all the time, even in times when you don’t think you’re using math,” Tommy told the 6th graders. He taught them a crash course in fractions, statistics and probability using card-based magic. The fact that you can easily split up a deck of 52 cards into 4 suits, 2 colors, or 13 number/face cards makes
38 PelhamOnline.com / Summer 2014
these math concepts easier for kids to understand and digest. And everyone loves magic tricks! When the 8th graders came in, Tommy asked them to think about what it means to be financially successful. He told them a story of preschoolers who are offered one marshmallow now, or five marshmallows in five minutes. “Most of those preschoolers eat the marshmallow now, and that is the way many adults look at their income.” He then explained the virtues of both saving, and more importantly, investing money, and starting to do so early on. He went on to explain how compounding interest works, to express to the students how simple it can be to let money work and grow for you into a healthy retirement payoff years down the line. Spending wisely, shopping carefully, and budgeting are all
habits of wealthy people. “The typical millionaire owns their own business, is a laborer, and would be more likely to pay $70 for a good pair of work boots than twice that for more fancy shoes.” He recommends saving now and buying later, instead of buying now and paying later, such as with a credit card. “Credit cards are a trap– they help compounding interest work against you. If you just make the minimum payment, you will end up paying so much more than you originally owed.” “If you want to become a millionaire, you have to save and invest regularly for a long time,” he summed up. He suggested students looking for more information should head to the Pelham Public Library and check out “Money for Teens,” “Prepare to be a Teen Millionaire” or “Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens,” among many other books.

Pelhamopoly and summer reading in full swing at Pelham Public Library Now through the end of July, the Pelham Public Library is offering patrons the ability to play the fun, educational game Pelhamopoly for prizes. Pelhamopoly is the newest program sponsored by the Smart Investing @ Your Library grant, adding some festivity and challenge to the library’s already accessible financial education tools and materials. The game, as the name suggests, is based on monopoly. To play Pelhamopoly, simply walk into the library and ask a worker for an official game sheet. To move around the “board,” patrons have to perform simple tasks related to the library, including checking out a non-fiction book and liking the library on Facebook. Other tasks include reading a financial book and talking with your family to create a better budget, or starting a family vacation piggy bank. Patrons who complete all the tasks on the game board win a $5 library credit, which can be used for paying late fees, printing or making copies. The goal of Pelhamopoly is to introduce patrons to new texts
and materials available at the library, especially materials associated with financial education literacy and practices to better utilize the Pelham Public Library in everyday life. “We want to get people familiar with the finance items we have,” Adult Services Coordinator David Smith said. “Pelhamopoly is for adults 18 and up, but it’s primarily aimed at adults with kids. It’s about getting families to work together and save money.” Completed game sheets must be turned by July 31st. Game materials were made possible by Smart investing@your library®, a grant-funded program developed collaboratively by the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The program addresses the growing need for unbiased financial and investor education at the grassroots level. Since its launch in 2007, participating libraries and their community partners have helped people nationwide find the information they need to improve their financial decisions. For more information about Pel-
hamopoly, please call the library at 620-6418. As many know, Fizz Boom Read, the Children’s Summer Reading Program, is going strong for kids 17 and under. Movie Mondays, Tuesday performers, Storytime on Wednesdays and Thursdays, crafts and fun with LEGOs head some of the daily activities at the library. The annual Adult Summer Reading program, open to anyone over 18, is also underway at the library through the end
of July. Any adult who checks out five or more books, audio books or magazines during this time can enter to win prizes, which include gift cards from many Pelham businesses and restaurants. “We wanted something to attract adults to the library and get the to come and see what we have here,” David said. There is no limit to the number of times you can enter, so get out there and read! More information can be found at PelhamLibrary.com
magazine, it stays on their device until they delete it,” Russ said. “There are no due dates and no late fees.” He hopes the service will allow the library to reach a new demographic. “It doesn’t require a lot of tech
savvy, and the magazine files are fairly small,” Mitchell said. If you need help with setting up and using the Pelham Library’s Zinio database, come into the library, or feel free to contact Russ at 620-6418.
Read favorite magazines through Pelham Public Library’s Zinio partnership Since the beginning of the year, the Pelham Public Library has offered a new way for patrons to read their favorite magazines without a subscription, wherever they want, on their favorite device: through the online service Zinio. Working with the company RBdigital, the library now gives patrons free access to the Zinio for Libraries online newsstand, which offers current and back issues of 24 magazines in Pelham. The easiest way for patrons to get started is to download the Zinio app on their chosen device
and set up an account, explained library employee Russ Mitchell. Then, the Zinio database can be found by clicking the Zinio link on the library’s home page at Pelhamlibrary.com . If they have not already done so, or if they are working on a computer, patrons can create a Zinio account by entering their library card number on this page. Once the account is active, patrons can download full issues of magazines on their computer or device to read whenever they would like. “Once they download the

than ever before, the Pelham Fire Department needs your help by giving us feedback on where the Santa Stops should be located. Please submit your feedback to Battalion Chief Mike Reid at mreid@ pelhamonline.com or by calling (205)620-6433. A new Christmas tradition is at hand in Pelham.

Caleb Page
Caleb Page (son of Monica Page): “My favorite RMS memory was the 2013 Panther Bowl, when we tied into overtime. The team was more unified than any other time in the season. After seven years, I knew what it meant to have Panther Pride,” he said. “I have been under Mrs. Crawford’s wing for two years and I’m reaping the benefits. She is the most reliable teacher I’ve met, next to my band teacher.” Three things he could not live without are his family, friends, and Lego collection. His greatest achievement at RMS was getting the chance to go to the state science fair and the take Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority group’s 1st place. His career goal after graduating from high school is to become an electrical engineer. “I would like to live up in the Northern States or at the very least, Virginia. I have special childhood memories there before I moved to Alabama.”
Jacqui Adan
Jacqui Adan (daughter of Maria and Juan Adan): “Out of all of my great memories at RMS, my favorite memory is winning the Science Olympiad egg drop with my classmates,” Jacqui said. Her favorite RMS teacher is Coach Mayes. “It’s because she has always been there for me, and she will always listen to what you have to say.” Three things that she said she could not function without are soccer, music, and pizza. She said her greatest achievement at RMS was when she was elected as the president of the National Junior Honor Society. “After graduating from high school, I hope to play soccer in college and hopefully for the USA national team.”
Robert Plummer
Robert Plummer (son of Robert and Beth Plummer): His favorite RMS memory was going to the regional science fair at UAB and winning first place, which allowed him to go to the state finals in Huntsville. “I have learned a lot from all of my teachers at RMS, but if I had to pick one, I would pick Mrs. Bogdanchik, because she encouraged me to go to the science fair.” Three things he could not live without are Jesus, family, and friends. “My greatest achievement at RMS was when I won first place at the regional science fair. It made me think more about my future and working harder.” His career goal after graduating from high school is to start an automobile design and production company making high performance cars. “I have already drawn several vehicles I want to make.”
RMS OUTSTANDING 8TH GRADERS
Emma Hammett
Emma Hammett (daughter of Shane and Heather Hammett): “My favorite RMS memory was winning the Southern Conference Championship in track. Everyone worked so hard and we really came together as a team.” Her favorite RMS teacher is Coach Collins. “He is always encouraging us to do our best and wants to help us succeed in life. Also, he is really funny and a great track coach.” Three things she could not live without are her family, food, and her Bible. “My greatest achievement at RMS was being asked to join the National Junior Honor Society.” After graduating from high school, her goal is to be an elementary school teacher. “Because they have such a big influence on so many people’s lives.”
Braxton Jeffcoat
Braxton Jeffcoat (son of Brad and Heather Jeffcoat): “My favorite memory at RMS was the 8th grade class field trip to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. It was a really fun day with my friends.” His favorite RMS teacher is Mrs. Crawford. “She is a great teacher, makes stuff challenging, is like a mother to us, and I have learned so much in her class.” Three things he could not live without are soccer, food, and water. “My greatest achievement at RMS is when I was elected Vice President of National Junior Honor Society.” After graduating from high school, his goal is to play professional soccer. “If that goal is not fulfilled, I plan to either go back to college to get a higher degree or go into an area of science like chemistry or physics.”
Addison Fuller
Addison Fuller (daughter of Bram and Melissa Fuller): “My favorite RMS memory was being involved with band. Mrs. Moore has been a fantastic teacher who has provided me with wonderful opportunities, such as competitions, performances, and support.” Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Crawford. “She is always challenging me, she can always make me laugh, and she is an easy person to just go and talk to!” Three things she could not live without are her faith in Jesus Christ, her family, and baton twirling.” Her greatest achievement at RMS was being the editor of the RMS PawPrints newspaper. “It came with challenges and responsibility that made it worthwhile.” Her career goal after graduating from high school and college is to either pursue a degree in education or the medical field. “I could also see myself moving to another country and becoming a full time missionary.”

PHS student-athlete standouts Sam Finnerty, Hunter Stovall receive post-season accolades for stellar baseball Rising PHS seniors Sam Finnerty (right) and Hunter Stovall have more than a stellar year with the Panthers to celebrate this summer. Sam made it
on the Super All State team this summer, and he was also named Metro Player of the Year by the Birmingham News. Hunter was named to the All Metro Team. “Both of these young men were key leaders as juniors this year, with the experience they had from being on varsity,” said Coach Sean Anderson. Sam and Hunter have both played on the varsity team at PHS since 9th grade, a feat that takes serious athleticism in young high school student-athletes. “Playing varsity let me experience the upper level of playing, which made it easier to get used to it,” Hunter said. That extra experience has paid off for the boys and left them hungry for more practice. Although Sam generally pitches or mans the outfield with the Panthers, he’s up for playing any position with the All Star team. “I like playing them
all- wherever they need me,” he said. He also plays travel ball with East Coast Baseball, on two different teams. “It’s just more time to play,” he explained. Hunter, a catcher and middle infielder for PHS, will continue to perfect these positions on the All Metro Team. He also plays travel ball with the Dulins Dodgers, out of Mississippi, and he took part in the Perfect Game Nationals Showcase in June. After a summer honing their skills in off-season baseball, we can look forward to only good things from these student athletes. “I expect them to be leaders once again next year, in training and conditioning as well as in the preseason,” Sean said. Colleges are looking forward to great baseball from these young men as well: Sam has
already committed to play as a South Carolina Gamecock after graduation, and Hunter has committed to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. “Hunter and Sam are tireless workers on and off the field,” Coach Anderson concluded. “As good of baseball players as they are, they are both even better young men. This is part of the reason they excel on the field.”
