FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

A lot of good things have been happening in Pelham. So, I need to begin by thanking some key people who have been working their special magic behind the scenes. So it is with Adam Sample, the Interim Superintendent of Oak Mountain State Park, the idea man behind the Independence Day Fireworks Display. Thanks to Adam, the Staff at Oak Mountain and Regions Bank for bringing us a wonderful new tradition I hope we can continue. Likewise, thanks again to Paula Holly and the Pelham Beautification Board for the way they planned and executed our 50th Birthday Party. Folks are still talking about our Golden Jubilee; from beginning to end,

everyone had a great time. Lastly, my thanks to Pelham Police Officer, father of Carly and originator of Carly’s Law, Dustin Chandler, for how he represented himself, the needs of Special Needs Children, Carly’s Clubhouse and the City of Pelham when he addressed the Birmingham City Council. All Veterans, Attention! It’s time to Fall In and report for duty once again. Pelham resident, Command Sergeant Major Barry Blount (ret), is spearheading an effort to establish a Chapter of The American Legion in Pelham. More than just a fraternal outlet for veterans, the American Legion is a service oriented organization that contributes to the community in many ways

while at the same time offering scholarship opportunities for our youth. If you are a veteran and interested in supporting this effort, please give Paula Holly a call at 620-6403 or contact me at garywaters@pelhamonline. com and leave your name, address & phone number. At Ease! Our Building Official, Mr. Bob Miller, and our Code Enforcement Officer, Officer Mike Williams, have been working hard on your behalf and making our city look much better. As this goes to print, there have been two blighted residences and one blighted business demolished. A demolition contract has been let for a third home and the owners of a fourth have been contacted. Great Job! We appreciate all you are doing to make our city a more beautiful place to live. I was honored to be invited to the memorial for Carson Sumpter held at our City Park on August the 3rd. Carson, a student at Pelham High School

PELHAM RECEIVES HIGH BOND RATING! Pelham is one of only three cities in Alabama with S&P’s top rating of “AAA” and one of only four cities with either “AAA” or “Aaa” rating from S&P or Moody’s. The ratings process included a very detailed review of Pelham’s finances, financial management, financial policies and local economy. Hats off to the City of Pelham!

succumbed to bone cancer at a very young age but not before setting an example of perseverance and courage for all who knew him. The ceremony was perfectly done and a worthy tribute to a deserving young man. As a reminder, City Hall and non-emergency services will be closed on Thursday, September 11, 2014 in honor of Patriot Day. Please remember to hang your American Flags and to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM in honor of those who died at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, the day America was attacked by islamic terrorist cowards. Don’t forget! We are jumping for a cure again this year. Come join us on September 27th at Skydive Alabama at the Cullman Regional Airport as we Skydive for Carly Chandler and a cure for CDKL5. If you can’t jump, make a donation to those of us who will. For more information, go to the bulletin board at www. pelhamonline.com. In closing, allow me to congratulate Officer P.T. Pritchard and Firefighter Art Bunn for successfully reaching the grand goal of retirement. Thank you for your many years of dedicated service to the City of Pelham. Best Wishes as you begin a new chapter in your lives. We are happy for you. You will be missed. I’ll be seeing you around town. Yours Truly,

FROM COUNCILMAN MCMILLAN July was a flurry of activities preparing the schools for the new school year. The work that had been done and the work in progress in preparation for the first day was evident during registration. In just one month, the new Pelham City School System was able to accomplish a multitude of feats, including the deep cleaning of all schools with freshly waxed floors, basic landscape around the schools and the new city school names on the school buses. Pelham High School also had all of the halls, administrative offices and gymnasium painted. Ned Bearden Stadium was not left out as it also received a thorough cleaning and replacement of the outdated light fixtures. I had the opportunity to attend the kickoff meeting for all Pelham City Schools employees. Dr. Coefield did an amazing job of laying out what to expect and his vision for the new school year. As a parent, I am so proud of the exciting new opportunities that will be available to our students. Please read school board member Angie Hester’s article. It is amazing to think that our students will soon be able to participate in focused academies and dual enrollment while in high school. My tenth

grade insider has reported that he is enjoying the extra room and smaller class sizes at Pelham High School. He is also looking forward to the pep rallies that were not offered last year. There are also many things happening at the Pelham Civic Center and Ice Arena. First, I would like to welcome Craig Henderson to the civic complex. He will be the Director of the Pelham Skate School. He was a world figure skating competitor and comes to us from Stockton, California. It will be very exciting to watch our skate school and hockey teams flourish with the additions to our leadership team. Plans have been set in motion to add seating for almost four hundred spectators in the Practice Arena. This will allow two events to take place at one time with room for spectators to attend both events. This is a significant undertaking which requires a small addition to the Practice Arena and will give us the ability to host larger events with multiple events going on at the same time. In the upcoming months there will be several opportunities to appreciate talented skaters. In September, the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena will be

hosting The Magic City Ice Classic. This is a U.S. Figure Skating competition featuring beginner to advanced ice skaters. On December 12-13, the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena will be hosting Christmas Traditions. I hope that you had a chance to attend “Fire on the Water” and the Pelham Golden Jubilee. “Fire on the Water” was a spectacular fireworks show at Oak Mountain State Park. The event drew thousands of spectators and will hopefully become a long lasting Pelham tradition. The Pelham Jubilee was a fantastic two day event to celebrate Pelham’s fiftieth birthday. There was a kid zone, food, arts and craft, free ice skating and a wide variety of vendors. The vendors covered just about everything including the best fruit pepper jelly I have ever had. We enjoy hosting these events and are anxious to add additional events to bring our community together. If the thought of all of that skating makes you hungry, keep

in mind that the Taste of Pelham will be October 7th at the Pelham Civic Center and Ice Arena. This is a delicious event featuring local food vendors and benefitting the Pelham Library Guild. This will be the second year for the Taste of Pelham and there are sure to be many more. My family attended the event last year and had a great time. We are planning on attending again this year and hope to see you there. In September, the City of Pelham will be going “teal” to show our support for Gynecologic Cancer Awareness. City Hall, the Library, the Racquet Club, and the Civic Complex and Ice Arena will all participate by using teal lights to shine on their buildings. I encourage you to also support and show your awareness during September. We are Pelham! It’s a great day to be a Panther! Beth McMillan

FROM PELHAM SCHOOL BOARD SECRETARY ANGIE HESTER

The first school year for Pelham City Schools is in full swing! As a board member and a parent, I am so excited about the new opportunities available to our school children. Appleton Learning has been engaged to implement our after-school extended learning program, Afterschool Labs, at VES and VIS. The students will have the opportunity to do fun, project-based activities in a safe environment while at the same time reinforcing academic concepts related to the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) curriculum in hands-on real world applications. The Leader in Me model, based on every child being capable and every child being a leader, will be expanded in the intermediate school and possibly implemented in the elementary school in the coming months. I am super excited about the Robotics program cranking up at RMS and PHS, partnering with UAB’s Blazer BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) program this fall and with the University of Alabama’s program in the spring. Being a graduate of UAB’s School of Engineering, this program is close to my heart. However, the Robotics Program is not just for the “techie” students or those interested in learning the 4 PelhamOnline.com / Fall 2014

electronics portion. The competition will also include awards for Team booth design, T-shirt design, marketing presentation,

and more. Our Superintendent, Dr. Coefield, is working diligently on future plans. Some of those in the works include partnering with local professionals to come in and speak on career specific topics, creating academies in the high school which could include an Engineering Academy, Academy of Business and Finance, Health Sciences (Biomedical) Academy, Hospitality and Culinary Arts Academy, or an IT Academy. This is a great way for high school students to get exposure to what these types of fields involve, because this will allow them to make better course of study choices once they get to college or go to technical school. Speaking of college, Pelham City Schools is also expanding their students’ opportunities for dual enrollment with new formal partnerships such as the University of Alabama’s dual enrollment program, UA Early College. Through this program, students can earn up to 30 hours of college credit while still attending high school, as well as obtain priority housing and automatic enrollment at the University of Alabama if the student takes a minimum of 17 hours and maintains a 2.5 GPA in those dual enrollment courses. These are just a few of the new opportunities that are and will continue to become available to

Pelham students. Are you excited yet? I hope so, because it is not just up to the schools to provide opportunity; it is imperative that parents and the community as a whole get involved. Encourage your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, even your neighbors’ children to participate in new things, because this develops their confidence and leadership skills. Pelham City Schools offer many extracurricular activities including athletics, chess club, student government, drama, band, choir and many others. Besides being a great way to socialize with their peers and create lasting memories, extracurricular activities enhance student’s time and stress management skills that are so important in college.

Parents, please come attend our PTO meetings and ask any questions or bring up any issues you may have; our administrators will work with you to find solutions. Have conferences with your child’s teachers and find ways to continue to challenge your student at home. Go to athletic events and school performances with your family. Attend Pelham Board of Education meetings, which will now be held on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30p.m. at Pelham City Hall. This is such an exciting time in the history of our city. The more you get involved, the more pride we will all have in what is being accomplished. Go Panthers!

Dr. Jason Yohn named principal of PHS Dr. Jason Yohn has already worn two different hats for the fledgling Pelham City School System. The Board of Education hired him as the Director of Operations during their May 12 meeting, but following a recommendation by Superintendent Coefield in the June 13 meeting, he was appointed the principal of Pelham High School. Previously, Yohn served as principal at Smith’s Station High School in Lee County for six years. A graduate of Auburn University, where he earned his bachelors and doctorate degrees, and Troy University, where he earned his masters in between, he loves to learn. Dr. Yohn has extensive experience as an educational administrator, including a three-year tenure as the principal of Dadeville High School in Tallapoosa County and then assuming the position of principal at Smiths Station HS in May of 2008, he has shown how capable he is. There were many factors that attracted Dr. Yohn to the op6 PelhamOnline.com / Fall 2014

portunity in Pelham. “The first thing was the idea of working for a brand new school system and being on the ground floor,” he explained. “We have a unique opportunity to rebrand Pelham and PHS.” His wife, Kathy, is also an educator, and they want to build a great school system for their children: Ellis, 11, and Emory, 7, Dr. Yohn said. The family actually met former Interim Superintendent Dr. Alford while they all worked in Enterprise, and he suggested that Dr. Yohn apply for the position. “We didn’t set out to move, but when the opportunity in Pelham arose, it was hard to turn it down,” he said. “I wanted to come to the Birmingham area, and in Pelham, I can grow as an educator and take on responsibility at school in this burgeoning school system.” His No. 1 priority is creating a safe environment for the students, which is optimal for proper instruction and learning. The entire school was cleaned

up and minor repairs were made over the summer. “We had to roll our sleeves up and get to work,” Dr. Yohn laughed. He will also place a lot of emphasis on high quality academics and well-rounded athletic programs. He hopes to expand the art, band, choir, ROTC and other extracurricular opportunities for students, as well as bring in newer technology. The A+ College Ready Grant the school received earlier this year for the ‘15-16 school year will help bring the Advanced Placement program to PHS. These classes will help students begin collecting college credits while still attending high school. Career Tech classes are also going to be brought into the curriculum, so that some students can graduate ready to work in specific local industries in the greater Birmingham area. Some plans that have already begun working for the school started with Jason meeting students from each class personally to ask them what they want

to do to help make their class unique. He wants students to participate in discussions about their homecomings, proms and pep rallies, plus many other identifying features of attending high school. “We want students engaged in these decisions. The experience we give our kids in school is the most important thing they take away from it,” he explained. “I want teachers and students alike to get up in the morning and want to come to PHS.” Making the experience more personalized, showing interest in collaborating with students and parents will help make PHS better for everyone, Dr. Yohn believes. “We want to put out great students and great people,” he said. “So we make only the best decisions for the kids. This is non-negotiable.” “It is my sincere hope that I will be an integral part of making Pelham High a world-class school,” Jason concluded. “If you have pride in everything you do, you can’t be anything but great.”

Residential Beautification Award— 109 Timber Cove Breck and Linda Gardner Mount moved to Timber Cove just two years ago and they have brought this once-neglected yard back to a lovely and welltrimmed award-winning lawn. “Soon after we arrived,” Linda recalls, “we received a letter of citation from the neighborhood homeowner’s association

pointing out what we already well knew—the weeds had taken over.” And not ordinary weeds, Linda recalls, but dallisgrass, an invasive crabgrass that requires digging out clump by clump. “So it’s been an extensive and extended work in progress.” Linda and Breck share the pruning, mowing and maintenance themselves, with Linda bringing her own favorite seasonal flowers to a side front bed they added. In the late summer heat —moss rose and impatiens surround her rabbit planter and lime-green potato vines spill over the

rock wall. “I also like lantana, but the (real) bunnies made it their salad this summer. I happen to also love roses, but have had no luck with them.” Linda, who grew up in St Pete, Florida, says her father was a big gardener who grew plants for sale in their back yard. They have added a Profusion Crabapple and a Japanese maple in the front yard and three sugar maples, a crape myrtle (from her father’s yard), gardenia and

climbing hydrangeas in the back. Breck, who works for Pitney Bowes, and Linda, who works for the Alabama Home Builders Self-Insurers Fund, are currently enjoying home-grown fresh tomatoes and Cajun Bell peppers from their garden. Brett’s hobbies are hunting and fishing and Linda enjoys walking, biking and hiking at Oak Mountain and takes along her 13-year-old dachshund companion, Gretchen, who is pictured left.

US figure skater Craig Henderson is Pelham Ice Arena’s Figure Skating Director Figure skating coach Craig Henderson has been hired as the Pelham Ice Arena’s new Figure Skating Director. He will be working with Hockey Director Randy Murphy and Skate School Director Danny Tate to rebuild the Learn to Skate program from the ground up. “There’s nothing like building something yourself,” Craig said. “It’s cool.” His goals are to bring more skaters into the figure skating program, and help all skaters build their skill sets to become better athletes and competitors. Craig, from California, has a long history in figure skating. Since starting the sport at age 9, it’s been a lifelong passion of his. After training under skating legend Barbara Roles, he was a member of the National and International Team USA figure skating teams from 1983-1986, during which time he was also an Olympic Festival Competitor. Craig was a U.S. novice men’s silver medalist in 1980 and a two-time U.S.

champion in 1980 and 1981. At the International Skating Union’s (ISU) yearly International Competition Tour, he performed impressively for several years. In France in 1983 and 1984, he took third and first place in the final rankings respectively. Later that year in Germany, he took second place, and in 1985 in Canada, he took sixth. He traveled all over the world for competitions and exhibitions. Tragedy ended his skating career when he broke his knee working on a quadruple toe loop. He then took up coaching at age 22, first in the Cape Cod area, then Colorado, and then near LA, where he met his wife Lisa. At 35, he and Lisa moved to Dallas, Texas, to get away from the hustle and bustle of California. New ice rink facilities there and a lack of figure skating coaches in the state heralded that move for Craig. He and Lisa had their now 5-year-old Courtney and 1 1/2-year-old Reagan there.

Craig thought Texas is where they would stay, but serendipity has brought the Hendersons to Pelham after 13 years. “Every summer, we make a beach trip to Seagrove, and always joked that we’d move to Alabama or Florida if they had a nice ice rink, because the drive to the beach would be such a short trip from there,” he laughed. So when he heard of an ice rink in Alabama, our very own Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, was looking for a new skating director, he had to look into it. He and Danny Tate hit it off immediately, bonding over their shared love of and passion for skating. Coming to Pelham to visit the arena sealed the deal. “It is a beautiful rink, totally appetizing to work with,” Craig said. “And the small-town feel of Pelham feels just like home.” Craig’s credentials for the position are overwhelming. He has over 25 years of coaching experience in the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) and is Continuing Education Requirements (CER) Certified, which means he is qualified to coach skaters entering qualifying rounds for competition. He is also certified in Sports Medicine, so skaters will be in very safe hands when training with him. He has coached both U.S. Senior and U.S. Junior medalists, and was the Skating Director at the Polar Ice rink in Texas for five years. Craig competed against the likes of Scott Hamilton and Brian Boitano in senior level men’s singles in the 1984 US Figure Skating Championships. “The people I’ve met over the past few months since I’ve been here are so nice. I love the southern hospitality,” Craig said. “This is basically my retirement home, I’m not going to be leaving Pelham. I’m excited to be doing it here in this great facility. And in 40 + years skating around the world, I’ve never had such a great boss in all my years,” he added, speaking of Danny Tate. The Skate Program’s newest addition is Synchro, or synchronized

skating, which Craig said is “just as intense as pairs or singles” in competition. “We have the only Southern synchronized skating team, called Southern Magic.” This team has already been around for a few years, but was brought under the wing of the skate school as a part of the new “team, unity and family” ideals at the ice arena. Also offered are Spin and Edge classes for figure skating, because spins just as important as jumps, and edge class will teach students more about having control, beauty and grace on ice. The Learn to Skate programs have been revamped, with more and longer classes available at more times, and more free skate tokens are offered for students to come back and practice. He wants to bring theatre on ice to Pelham. “The grooviness of dancing and acting, of performing theatre on ice, is becoming more popular. Kids these days are definitely more groovy than when I was younger,” he laughed. He, Danny, and Hockey Director Randy Murphy expect the skating programs at the Ice Arena to bring more skaters and business to Pelham. “The kids here are ready to learn and sponge everything up,” he concluded. “We want them to get out there and playwrite, dress up and tell a story on the ice in Pelham!”

Speed sign, patrol cars spread awareness on Pelham’s streets You may have noticed a new addition to Pelham’s roadways this summer: a “your speed” sign. Issued by Stalker, a company specializing in speed awareness and accident prevention, the Stalker Speed Awareness Monitor (SAM) is used to show drivers just how fast they are driving on any given roadway. “We had been receiving complaints about speeding through many of our main neighborhoods, including Ballantrae, Chandalar and Stonehaven,” said Pelham Police Lieutenant David Rushton. “We have already been using the trailer to bring awareness to the speeding problems in these areas since its purchase.” Stalker SAM works best on two-lane roads, and is set up with radar software to detect the speed of approaching cars.

The speed limit sign on the trailer can be changed to reflect the limit on the road where the trailer is placed, so it will always be correct for drivers when they pass it. “Many drivers commute on the same roads every day; driving is automatic to them,” Lt. Rushton said. “Just having the trailer out there and showing people their speed is enough to alert people of their own speeding problems.” Stalker SAM does more than merely raise awareness in this

way: it also collects data as long as it’s turned on. The onboard data processor collects each passing vehicle’s speed and the time of day. “We leave it out for a week of data and to remind drivers of the speed limit. With the data, we then see what times of day have the most speeders, and know what time of day to send out a detail,” he explained. Another recent addition to

the Pelham PD fleet is five Ford Taurus vehicles with a silver base coat, instead of the standard white on existing police vehicles. “The specs on the Taurus filled all our needs, including more space for equipment. It was a solid car to move away from the Crown Victoria,” said Lt. Rushton. “The silver really makes the white in the “police” part of the logo stand out much better.”

Chase P’Pool runs across country to raise money for sarcoma research Chase P’Pool, a senior at the University of South Alabama, did a lot of traveling this summer... on the road... on foot... on the run. Chase, 22, a Pelham High School graduate, joined his longtime friend, Landon Cooper, on a leg of the 2014 Miles 2 Give run, raising awareness and money for research to fight sarcoma cancer. Ewing’s sarcoma can develop in bones, muscles and other soft tissues and affects about 12,000 Americans each year. The cancer

the first two weeks I felt done, my body rebuilt itself,” he said. “I was really exhausted, and it was a lot of impact on my knees and joints, but the last week, I felt great and ran 13 miles every day.” Miles 2 Give was formed in 2012 by Landon Cooper, who was once a student at Chase Learning Center in Pelham. The day care center, owned and operated by Chase’s parents, Lorrie and Chuck P’Pool, is named for their son. Chuck is a cancer survivor.

makes up one percent of all newly diagnosed cases in adults and 15 percent of pediatric cancer cases. While last year’s event was a 157-day cross country trek, this year’s is a counter-clockwise route along the perimeter of the US, which began April 29 in New York City’s Times Square and will finish there in December. Of that, Chase participated June 27-Aug. 1, running all but two of those days and traveling from Milwaukee to Montana, completing about 10 to 13 miles each day. According to Chase, he wasn’t in the best shape when he got the call to join the team and had never run that kind of mileage on back-to-back days. “But I’ve always been active, and I am a runner, and while

“Landon was older than me but close to our family, and it seemed he was always on an adventure, playing semi-pro soccer and traveling and living all over the world,” Chase said. “Then he lost a close friend to sarcoma cancer and decided helping to raise money and fight the disease was something he wanted to do.” The Miles 2 Give team consists of three to four people, including guest team members that rotate in and out during the tour. With an accompanying RV that serves as office, locker room, recovery area and sleeping quarters,

the runners run, one at a time, individual legs of five to seven miles. Each is picked up for a rest period before starting on the next leg, “Chase said. “It’s kind of like leapfrogging but there’s no set number or limit of miles,” he said. “It just depends how you’re feeling and we try to make a team total of about 30 miles per day.” Many days the team is met by local runners and often connects with races being held along the route. “We’d meet families who’ve been affected by this disease and have so many people drive by and stop and talk to us and donate,” he said. “Going through Wisconsin and Minnesota, we met so many people, then in North Dakota, saw very few. But during that time, the tour seemed to pick up a lot of momentum through the media, and a lot of money was donated.” During his stint on the Miles 2 Give team, Chase also

filmed a video for an internship required for his major in communications. Entitled “What is Life Elevated?,” the video documents life on the team RV—named Life Elevated for Utah’s state motto, where it was purchased. “It was kind of like living on a boat—240 square feet with a tiny stove and tiny bed, and we had ants,” he said. “And when we went through the Great Plains, with oceans of grass, it was really like being on a boat.” Chase received an A for his film project and, though it was tough, he gave his entire experience with the Miles 2 Give tour an A plus. “Funding for something important like this will come if awareness is there, and I would do it again if the circumstances are right,” Chase said. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Dr. Richard Baxter & His Family

Dr. Richard Baxter opens Shelby Pediatric Dentistry on Hwy 31

Welcome Pelham and Helena’s new pediatric dentist, Dr. Richard Baxter, DMD, MS. For the past 18 months, Dr. Baxter and his wife, Tara, have been involved in every aspect of creating their business home in the newly constructed building at 2490 Pelham Parkway next to Valley Elementary School. Together, they choose and designed all aspects of the project including the building layout, logo, interior and exterior colors, and furnishings to make it as kid-friendly as possible.

They are ready to start taking appointments at Shelby Pediatric Dentistry on August 11. “We want children to feel a sense of fun when they come in,” Dr. Baxter said. “We invite families in the community to come take a tour of the office. They will see this is a happy place!” Dr. Baxter, originally from Dallas, TX, attended Vanderbilt University, where he met his wife, Tara, who is a nurse practitioner. They then moved to Birmingham, where Tara’s family lives, so he could attend dental

school at UAB. The couple spent time in Columbus, OH while Dr. Baxter completed a two-year program/ residency in pediatric dentistry at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Tara worked in the heart transplant ICU at UAB and in cardiology while at Ohio State. Their interest in mission work inspired their logo, which represents all children of the world. The interior theme of the office vibrates with colorful walls. Each area is themed to a

different continent and is thus inclusive and educational about the children who live there. The Baxters attend the Church at Brook Hills and are committed to and involved with mission work. In 2013, they traveled to Myanmar (Burma) with mPower, which is a non-profit ministry based in Louisville. “There, in an area where there are several million people but no access to dental care, we trained eleven pastors with some previous medical training to extract teeth,” Dr. Baxter said.

“We treated many infections and taught these pastors known as ‘Barefoot Doctors’ to do extractions, administer antibiotics, and provide ongoing basic dental care in their home communities. It is our plan to continue trips to do this type of training.” “We got a report from one of

hiring. “Dental care for special needs children is a big part of pediatric dentistry. Our practice focuses on dental care for all children from birth to about age 20. Shelby Pediatric Dentistry provides a wide-range of services including preventative care and restorative care (fillings and

the men we trained and learned he took out over 1000 teeth last year with no complications. This is a part of the world where people have no anesthetics and in desperation have to remove diseased teeth themselves with hardware tools.” Other previous mission trips include Peru and Costa Rica where they saw heartbreaking incidences in young children who have no dental care. Seeing these situations is part of what steered Dr. Baxter to dentistry. His extensive pediatric training includes sedation and general anesthesia in a hospital setting, sometimes needed with special cases. Dr. Richard and Tara Baxter are proud new parents of twin girls, Hannah and Noelle. As a new mother, Tara will have a presence in the office. In addition to helping oversee the original project, she also helped develop their employee manual, website and consulted with the

crowns).” “We want every child to have a positive experience and receive the highest quality care.” Shelby Pediatric Dentistry has partnered with their next-door neighbor, Valley Elementary School, to install a safe walking path for student use.

Golden Jubilee A hearty thank-you to the Beautification Board, City Council, Civic Complex employees, dozens of volunteers and others who helped make Pelham’s 50th Birthday so memorable. From skating, eating birthday cake and visiting vendors to watching entertaining performances and riding carnival rides, there was a little bit of something for everyone at the Golden Jubilee. Thanks also to all who came out to join in the celebration!

Charles Smith retires, Susan Hyatt named RMS principal After 21 years as principal of Riverchase Middle School, Charles Smith announced his retirement at the July 14 Board of Education meeting. "Working at this school has been the highlight of my career," he said, tearfully. "I know that great things are going to happen at RMS, and I’m excited about that. There are good things coming for Pelham." Following Charles' announcement, his assistant principal, Susan Hyatt, was named as his successor. "I'm blessed to be in a school with such good leadership already–we just have to pick up where they left off," Susan said. "I'm really blessed to work with this group of people," she smiled. "Everybody has been on board, everybody has been supportive." Even through phone outages, library check-out

software malfunctions and other snafus, the staff has worked together to keep everything on track. Some technology is not yet in place. "The city has done everything they needed to do, we are just waiting on vendors to deliver." Some students will have this year's social studies textbook online at home, because next year, a new system will be in place. This system is a one-to-one student-to-device plan, where all textbooks and class documents are loaded on the tablets for students to use during the school year. It's the teachers' excitement for new technology and their trust in the administrators that caused this

In this, his fourth year at PHS, Justin Ward has finally made the leap from associate director to the Director of Bands, which includes the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, the Wind Ensemble and the Pelham Tower of Power marching band. “We already had such a great program, but it’s nice to be able to make my own mark on the program

and to move it forward,” Justin said. Decorations around the room mirror this sentiment. A poster above the door says, “If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.” They talk about the new PHS motto, “It’s a new day! We are Pelham!” And Justin asserts he brings these ideas to the band room every day as he works with the students to build the band anew, in their new school system. “We’re setting up our own policies and procedures, picking music, and deciding who we are, together.” The move up to Director is a big one for Justin, who remembers the affect his high school band director had on him as a student. “I was completely

decision. "Everyone believes in our vision, so we know we can get past early bumps," she said. The central office's close quarters makes it easy for administrators across the city to get in touch with someone when they need to, and they always seem willing to help. They, along with members of the board, visit schools in person quite frequently. "It's

nice to see the central office be so invested," Susan said, noting that prior to this, she taught at Shelby County High School for 13 years."Our new system is very in-touch and flexible, only dealing with four schools." She concluded, "Charles Smith left a legacy of greatness behind at RMS. It will be a challenge for me to make that greatness better somehow."

Justin Ward—PHS Director of Bands inspired by his passion for what he did,” he said of Dan Havely, former Athens High School Band Director. “But my dad sat me down before I went off to college to study psychology and helped me realize that I was just as passionate about music.” Justin wants to have the same effect on his students, wants to help them learn and develop as musicians and mature into young adults. “As a student, it was all about the music. As an assistant, I was following someone else’s lead. As a full director, I now have the chance to focus much more on their growth,” he said. “It’s about the students and the music; the affect they have on each other.” Justin, who earned his undergrad, masters’ degree and doctorate all at the University of Alabama, still writes and arranges music for the Million Dollar Band. He is also active in helping with the Riverchase Middle

School band, and RMS Band Director Amy Moore serves as a part-time assistant to him at PHS. “We can vertically align ourselves now between the schools, it’s a collaborative effort and we have a lot more flexibility that way,” Justin happily explained. “We are so grateful for the hard work and flexibility of the school board and city for allowing us to work in this more cohesive way.” The school year may have just started, but he is pleased to announce the Wind Ensemble has already been selected to perform in the Southeastern United States Band Clinic at Troy University on February 6, 2015. We look forward to their performance, and seeing everybody come out and support their Pelham Panthers Football team and experience the Tower of Power Band’s hip new halftime show this fall. See you on the 50-yard line!

City honors Carson Sumpter on obelisk Carson Sumpter was a 17-yearold kid who touched a lot of people in a lot of different ways. Many of those gathered once again to share their ‘Carson memories’ at the ceremony where his name was added to the stone obelisk in Pelham City Park August 3. “This memorial to Carson will always be here—very near baseball field #5, where he first played baseball at age 6,” said his father, Jim Sumpter. “He also played football on an adjacent field. The rule was each child had to play four plays, and Carson, wearing #66, played his; the rest of the time he was cheering his buddies on.” In 1984, the City of Pelham wanted to find a special and permanent way to honor various recipients who have had an impact on its history. Mayor Waters said, “It’s a sad day for all of us when we have to inscribe the name of someone we would rather still be with us, but it’s a wonderful gesture and tradition.

He is in great company with other names on this rock.” City Councilman Ron Scott, who presented the initial resolution to the council, shared it with the gathered audience. It reads, in part, “in recognition of the leadership and courage he exemplified before his classmates and friends as he battled cancer. Carson was and continues to be an inspiration to youth and many others in our community.” PHS teacher Connie Nolen talked about her son & Carson playing on the golf team together, adding, “Time is getting away. All our children are borrowed treasures – but the essence that they are remains. Carson lived joyfully; no matter what, he chose to live joyfully. I wasn’t Carson’s teacher, but I think he was mine.” One of Carson’s first coaches noted, “He brought more to God when he was sick; we need to all do that when we’re healthy.” A musician friend who also

played after the dedication said, “When he told me of his diagnosis, I just fell to the ground in disbelief. Carson was one of the strongest men I ever knew.” PHS English teacher Rebecca Burnett recalled, “Every time I saw Carson, he was joyful and he always asked me sincerely, ‘how are you?’” “Carson was secure in his salvation and he wanted everyone to know that heaven is real and that he was going there.” “There are a few people in your life that change your life. Usually it’s your own children or your spouse. Carson is in my top 10. He truly showed me that he loved me, at a time when he could have been focused on himself. That’s just the kind of guy he was, an amazing, amazing young man,” shared a family friend. Speaking last, Carson’s mother

Kim said, “This has been a blessing to my heart, we were touched by your stories; it’s hard to imagine we have been existing three years without him. Some days are more difficult than others.” “Thank you for honoring him in such a beautiful way. It’s an incredible tribute.” At the ceremony’s end, those gathered were invited to write an inscription to Carson on a balloon and send it soaring into the sky and onward. R.I.P., Carson.

Oak Mountain Missions will host the annual Harvest of Hope Luncheon on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, 11:30 AM at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center. A silent auction will begin at 10:00 AM, so come early to browse these wonderful items. This year, we are privileged to have Fox 6 broadcaster Janet Hall as our keynote speaker. To top it off James Spann, the 33/40 weatherman, will be the Master of Ceremonies, and Reverend Al and Passion Lewis will provide our musical entertainment. Donations raised from this luncheon are so vitally important, because the number of clients needing assistance has greatly increased.

Gone Fishin’ Not Just Wishin’ celebrates 20th Anniversary at Oak Mountain May 13-15 marked the 20th anniversary of Gone Fishin’, Not Just Wishin’ at Oak Moutnain State Park. Students from Jefferson County schools and the Linda Nolan Learning Center are able to come and catch fish at OMSP’s Double Oak Lake. Volunteer fisherman Amy Taylor says she and her father really enjoy coming out to help with the event every year. “It’s

just so much fun, the kids get so excited,” she said. The event isn’t just about fishing, though. Teachers, parents and other volunteers help the students make art: everything from chalk drawings, paintings and colorful scratch-off fish pictures to sand sculptures. The children can also enjoy SnoCones, hotdogs and burgers right off the grill for lunch. A bouncy house and face-painting

were also available. “I really enjoy helping the children with special needs,” Pinson Elementary School bus driver Mary Pilkington said. Fellow bus driver Pat Holt agreed: “They may only catch a fish a few inches long, but you know it’s worth it when their faces light up!” In April, the Pelham City Council donated $3,000 to the Alabama Department of Con-

servation and Natural Resources to help fund the event, because “a few corporate sponsors have backed out over the years,” Mayor Gary Waters said. More than 1000 special needs children participated over the three days of the event, so city leaders know the money is helping out a truly worthwhile cause. “It’s something we’re proud to be part of,” said City Council President Rick Hayes.

THE TASTE OF PELHAM PRESENTED BY THE PELHAM LIBRARY GUILD

Pelham’s second annual Taste of Pelham event takes place at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena October 7 from 6-8p.m. More than 27 food, art, entertainment and author booths will be set up for the event, which is hosted by the Pelham Library Guild. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Pelham Public Library, at Iberia Bank on Hwy 31, from library guild

members, or at Pelhamlibraryguild.com. The event will be business casual, Library Director Barbara Roberts said, and the $25 ticket is all you need for a great night of food and entertainment. Once inside, attendees can sample as much of any food as they like. This year, the Taste of Pelham will also feature special dishes prepared by the students in the Pelham High School culinary program.

“This collaboration with the Pelham School System is something we are very excited about,” said Debbie Parrott, President of the Library Guild. Another new addition this year is a luncheon and talk the day of the Taste of Pelham. The talk will be given by bestselling Atlanta author Mary Kay Andrews, and the lunch will feature foods described in Mrs. Andrews’ books. Everyone who attends the luncheon will receive a copy of her newest book, Save the Date. Mrs. Andrews will be available after lunch for a meet-and-greet, pictures and autographs. She will also have books for sale that night at Taste of Pelham. Your $50 ticket to the luncheon gets you the lunch, the talk, the book, and a ticket to Taste of Pelham that night. More information about the luncheon, the main event and a full list of vendors can be found on the Pelham

Library Guild’s website at Pelhamlibraryguild.com. Anyone can help by sponsoring the event, and sponsors will be acknowledged in ads for Taste of Pelham and given free tickets to the event as well as a year’s membership in the library guild. Donations are also welcome—and tax-deductible. All proceeds from Taste of Pelham will benefit the Pelham Library building fund, which Barbara said aims to eventually expand the library into a larger, more efficient location with more parking and more technology. “It’s time to dine in Pelham!” said city councilman Maurice Mercer, and we agree!

Principal Deberah Miller has big plans for VES Deberah Miller was named the principal of Valley Elementary School at the Pelham Board of Education meeting on July 14. "Not every educator gets the chance to build up a new school system during their career," she said, excitedly. "This is such a great opportunity." Born to a family of educators, Deberah grew up wanting to be a teacher. In high school, her family moved to Alabama, where she eventually met Charles Miller, now her husband of 35 years. They have three children and three grandchildren. When their youngest started kindergarten, Deberah asked if she could help at school. Instead, Principal Rebecca Pratt wrote her a letter of recommendation for college. After starting at Shelton State, she finished undergrad at the University of Montevallo. While teaching 2nd, 3rd and 6th grades in Bibb County, she got her Masters in Administration from Grand

Canyon University. In her role as Instructional Coach at Matthews Elementary in Tuscaloosa County, she would help teachers with lesson plans, host professional development classes, analyze data and even act as a reading coach to students. "I saw that I could truly have a positive effect on more people than in one classroom," Deberah said. "Principal Dr. David Scott put me in a position to continue to learn and grow as an educator, while also letting me practice administration." The on-the-job training helped her become Assistant Principal at Walker Elementary. She started attending Alabama Best Practice Center meetings for the Key Leaders Network and Professional Conversation Network. She wants to bring these and other professional development classes to the teachers at VES. All of these skills she brought to the table at Arcadia High School, where she spent the last

eight years as principal. But when Deberah heard administrative positions were open in Pelham, she immediately applied. "The idea of helping develop a brand new school system is actually what drew me here," she said. "It's an amazing opportunity." She has also been involved with the planning stages for the proposed elementary school on Hwy 52. "The central office is very open to involving and getting input from the faculty and staff of each school, and it’s clear that Pelham's decisions are all child-centered," she said. "This has merely reaffirmed for me the decision to come here." Deborah plans to add more professional learning classes and book studies for teachers through a partnership with AMSTI this year. She has met with all VES teachers to align the teachers' and school's goals and get feedback. "It's all

about collaboration," she said. She would like to see VES become a Leader in Me School like VIS. "It is a way of life," she said. "It instills responsibility and pride; it totally takes away punitive discipline for positive reinforcement. It teaches the kids that anyone can be a leader." "This is an awesome school, an awesome faculty, I am so blessed to be here," she concluded. "You feel the spirit of collaboration and true caring for the children. This is not my school, this is our school!"

Pelham Fire Station #2 divers thankful for free training space at Dive Alabama The officers at Pelham Fire Station #2, right next to the Purple Onion on Pelham Parkway, have more specialized training than many other servicemen in the city. Under the command of Captain Tim Honeycutt, 30 of the men and women at this station are active divers, having at least gone through open water dive training. Half of these divers are dive rescue certified, which is a special classification for those actually diving to rescue someone in the water. During that kind of event, other divers aid the rescuers. This certification can be achieved through a course with several days of learning the science and mechanics of water in a classroom before two or more full days of diving. Other certifications include swift water, flood water, surface water, open water and deep water. Anyone certified in these can assist in recovery missions, such as recovering a firearm from the bottom of a lake or helping pull a car out of the flood from a swollen river.

Lt. Ricky King, one of the rescue divers, explained how little many people know about how to behave in water-related emergencies. “For example, a car in just 10 feet of water will almost always flip,” he said. That’s why they learn so much and continue to practice these somewhat obscure skills regularly. “We need to be prepared for swimming incidents, diving accidents, cases of drowning and other possibilities because of our proximity to Oak Mountain,” said Captain Honeycutt. “The end goal is to have everyone stationed at Station #2 divecertified,” Lt. King agreed. “We practice dive rescue and recovery at least once a month, either in the lakes at Oak Mountain State Park or Dive Alabama.” Dive Alabama, seen in the background of this article, is located behind the Alabama Power Building on Industrial Park Drive. It offers 23 acres of, weather permitting, very highvisibility water conditions in an old quarry filled with police cars, boats, buses, a firetruck and

other sunken vehicles that make it ideal for training practices. Andy Guilbert, the main operator of Dive Alabama, which is actually owned by his daughter, Michelle Lapoint, and managed by his other daughter, Stefanie Combs, said they let Pelham firefighters use their facilities once a month for free because of all the services they provide. “We also give discounts to any military, police or firemen who come in, whether they live in Pelham or elsewhere. It’s something we can give back to the city,” said Andy, a retired Air Force veteran. “We would like to thank Andy at Dive Alabama for supporting our training in this way,” Lt. King said sincerely. Cap-

tain Honeycutt added, “They certainly have a lot to offer for anyone who wants to dive in central Alabama.” Seen here are, from left to right, Billy Earnest, Lt. King and Jeff Blankenship. Lt. King is showing off their new Whites Air Control Nexus dry suit and holding an AGUA mask, which gives users the ability to talk to others in or out of the water for better navigating in low- or novisibility conditions. Later this summer, many of the Station #2 divers will go through black water training, which is zero visibility. They will continue to train in new and better techniques with more sophisticated equipment to keep Pelham safe.

City pushes new initiative: Shop Pelham! City officials are providing an online opportunity to bring together Pelham business owners and anyone wishing to patronize them via Shop Pelham, located on the city’s home page www. pelhamonline.com. Shop Pelham is a free service that will list the name, type,

address, contact information, description and even a location map of any business in the city, said Paula Holly. “All a business owner has to do is go to the city home page and click the Shop Pelham button,” Paula said. “There you can use the format to enter all the details about your business, plus a photo and logo if you desire.” The submitted information will go to

Paula at Pelham City Hall to be organized and posted to the website. Shop Pelham offers 22 categories of businesses, including retail, restaurants, home furnishings, automotive, personal services, churches and child care. “Then residents and visitors to Pelham can use the service to find a list of the type of business they wish to shop at,” Paula said. “Many people don’t know the wide variety of businesses Pelham offers.” Pelham merchants are encouraged to get their businesses listed on Shop Pelham

as soon as possible and shoppers are asked to regularly review the current listings, which includes about 100 entries so far but is growing daily. “Shop Pelham benefits both businesses and residents, encouraging the spending of money in our city that helps fund our schools and the community,” Paula said. Pelham Police Officer Dustin Chandler and his wife, Amy, parents of 3-year-old Carly Chandler, directed their thanks to Governor Robert Bentley for his help in passing Carly’s Law during his visit to Pelham in July. “These kids are our future and our lives. We owe you a lot of gratitude for helping us out in Montgomery. What you did in the State House was nothing short of a miracle, really.” Carly’s Law pushed for the chemical testing of cannibanoid oil, which might alleviate seizures in kids like Carly, who suffers from CDKL5, a rare seizure disorder. “It’s been great for these kids to have a voice. As you may know, Carly can’t speak; many of these children cannot; but we worked together to give them a voice,” Dustin said. Governor Bentley noted, “As a

physician, I know there are plant-derived medicines, such as salicylic acid (aspirin) and digitalis. We felt the need to help these children in a legitimate study.” Bentley said that these children and their families touched the hearts of State Representatives Allen Farley and Mike Ball and Senator Paul Sanford who took the lead in the legislature. Senator Sanford said he felt compelled to act. “I thought, what if this was my child? I consider this my best effort in Montgomery since 2009.” Rep. Mike Ball said with emotion, “This has been a spiritual experience for me. I felt led by a spiritual force. It has changed me. I got a lot more out of it than I gave.” Rep. Farley told of the middleof-the-night session, “The law was introduced into the legislature at 2 am, but everyone started chanting, vote, vote, vote. This vote passed unanimously. It was a God thing.” Officer Dustin Chandler has been a leading advocate voice statewide for the International Foundation for CDKL5 Research. See more at: http://www. cdkl5.com.

Sam Finnerty—All-American athlete Kevin Kierspe receives Algernon to thank my teams, coaches, As we mentioned last issue, Sydney Sullivan Award friends, family, teachers and Panthers outfielder Sam Finnerty was named to the All-State baseball team. He has also been named to the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) All-Region team honors for the Southeast Region as well as the AllAmerican second team honors, which chooses from students nationwide. He was one of only two juniors and two athletes from Alabama named to these teams. "I'd heard about All-American teams, but I never thought I'd make it to one. It's pretty cool," he said. They sent him a banner, with his name and the honorary teams he was named to, which he's going to have framed. "I really want

summer ball coaches for being there for me," he concluded. "For teaching me how to play the game, and showing me how to play the right way." With his track record at PHS and the accolades piling up, we look forward to seeing what Sam can do this year for Pelham baseball. Go Panthers!

Pelham resident and PHS graduate Kevin Kierspe was the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award at the University of Montevallo, accorded during recent Honors Day ceremonies. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award is a national recognition limited to carefully selected colleges and universities. The award itself was established in 1925 as a perpetual memory to a man of outstanding intellect and integrity who lived more than 100 years ago. “The object of the award is not so much to encourage one individual as it is to teach and to influence many.” While achievement and scholarship are considerations, spirit, compassion, honesty, humanitarianism and depth of character are its hallmarks. It is the one award for which no

student can compete except by virtue of who he or she is as a human being. Kevin graduated from the Montevallo in May and now attends grad school in Louisville.

Big changes underway at Pelham City Schools The Board of Education made several more hires for Pelham City Schools before the school year started for students on August 7. Julie Stevenson was hired as the lead nurse for the school system, its Tech Coordinator is Derrick Waddell, the Exceptional & Special Education Coordinator is Holli Hicks and the ESL Coordinator is Sevim Whitaker. Former PHS Principal Robert Lavett is also back, temporarily, as a part-time advisor. "We worked out a deal with him," even though the former principal is retiring, said Superintendent Dr. Scott Coefield. Former PHS assistant principal Floyd Collins is also on staff, coming back to Pelham after several years. He is now the Transportation and Career Technical Education Coordinator. "Floyd is one of

the great young educators in the Birmingham area," said PBOE President Rick Rhoades, expressing his happiness in having the man back on staff, before turning to the other new employees. "We continue to be impressed and excited at the caliber of people who want to join us. We are very excited to have each of you here," President Rhoades concluded. "You made a wonderful decision—we won't let you down!" With so many new principals, assistant principals and coaches coming on board across Pelham, the changes may seem overwhelming to some. But at the classroom level, much

is the same. Students have seen their favorite teachers stay to help make Pelham great! This foundation of great educators and administrators, eager students, an involved community and a supportive city add up to a formula for success. Pelham’s AAA Bond Rating and the city’s partnership with the city school system will help fund the system’s future development. The school system is expecting around $35 million in bond funding within the year and are in talks about taking out another $5 million in loans for the planned elementary school on Highway 52. As part of this plan, Valley Elementary will change from a

kindergarten through second grade school by adding third through fifth grades. New VES Principal Deberah Miller is excited to help facilitate this change. “Becoming a K-5 school will let us see students for several more years, allowing us to continue conversations about educating these kids,” she said. The current plans also include converting Valley Intermediate into a middle school, while the Riverchase Middle campus will be phased out. Finally, a new policy at PHS means each Thursday throughout the school year, students are dismissed an hour early at 2:00pm. Assistant Principal Dr. John Prestridge said the decision was made to allow for dedicated, regularly scheduled staff meetings, professional development for teachers, and tutoring for students during what would normally be class time.

Barry Blount working to bring American Legion to Pelham Barry Blount may be a retired Command Sergeant Major now, but he’s still on a military mission of sorts-—to bring an American Legion Post to Pelham. A resident of the city since 1980, Barry, who served in the Army from 1976-2005, said there is definitely an opportunity for an American Legion Post to flourish here. “It would serve men and women from all branches of the service, including those active, in the Reserves and the National Guard,” Barry said. “There are many generations of veterans here and in the surrounding area, including Helena and Alabaster.” Chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization, the American Legion developed from a group of World War I veterans to one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Today, membership is over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. Posts are organized into 55 departments, one in each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. From its inception, the American Legion has focused on service to veterans, service members and communities, all important elements that can benefit the Pelham area. “One mission of the post would be to help take care of our vets,” Barry said. “There are many benefits individuals are entitled to depending on their service, qualifications and disabilities, and we would keep them aware of those benefits and entitlements.” Another function of a local American Legion Post is to sponsor various youth programs, he said. “These range from citizenship to scholarships to Boys State. In fact, in July one of our Alabama Boys State 34 PelhamOnline.com / Fall 2014

participants ran for and was elected president at the National event, which is a first for Alabama.” Other American Legion programs include Heroes to Hometowns, which connects local Legionnaires with recovering wounded warriors and their families to provide support, career and education support, and a variety of donation and fundraising opportunities to help veterans and their families and provide college scholarships. Pelham Mayor Gary Waters, himself a veteran, said he and other city officials are behind the formation of a post “100 percent.” “Our last Flag Day gathering with the Elks Club was disproportionately gray. There were just no younger people in attendance and that’s very disappointing,” Mayor Waters said. “Patriotism has to be taught and this is an ideal opportunity to give so much to our youth and community as a whole. I don’t know the numbers, but Pelham has a lot of vets and I’m looking forward to helping shake the bushes in the area in hopes that they will take part.” According to Barry, participation is the key to a successful post. “First, we are looking for 15 in order to get our charter, then we’ll be reaching out through word of mouth and education to get a solid foundation of people to join and become involved,” he said. “I’ve met so many veterans from our area, from retired professors to police officers, to plumbers and electricians—I’m hoping we can tap into them as resources. We have to start slow, but work together as a team to insure success.” Barry, with his wife Terrie, also has a very personal motivation in his quest to form a Pelham area

post—the passing of his middle son, Matt, in 2012, from cancer after returning home after service as a medic in the field in Iraq. “He was only 30 when he died, but lasted over two years after his diagnosis, and the determination he showed coupled with the loss we experienced has influenced me to give back to the community,” Barry said. “An American Legion Post offers so many opportunities to open doors for the youth of tomorrow while helping those who have served our country.”

For more information about the formation of a Pelham American Legion Post, contact Barry Blount at csmblount@ gmail.com / 205-531-4131.

Commercial Development Authority working to bring new business to Pelham

While city residents and visitors won’t see an immediate impact, members of the new Pelham Commercial Development Authority are gearing up to enhance the city’s business environment. The CDA, formed recently by the Pelham City Council and replacing the dissolved economic development authority, is expected to hold its first official meeting at the end of September, once notification of finalization of the group’s articles of incorporation is received from the state, said CDA member Tim Alford. “We’re not saying anything will transform the commercial and retail sector overnight, but it’s important that the city has a group of people that wakes up every day thinking and working towards growing that sector,” Tim said. “A group that understands our city, its land and building availability and the entire commercial arena, and can bring together business, government, and leadership to enhance businesses already here while recruiting new business that is compatible with the existing.” Tim is the founding executive director of the Enterprise Economic Development Corporation, former executive director of the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development and the first director of Go Build Alabama. He is joined by four others on 36 PelhamOnline.com / Fall 2014

the CDA. Tracey Morant Adams is senior vice president and small business and community development director for Renasant Bank Corporation. Thomas A. Martin is the general manager of the Riverchase Galleria. Lenny Glynn retired from AT&T and is a member of several Pelham city boards. Clay Alford is the former vice president of operations for Moore Handley. While one aspect of the CDA’s work will be commercial development, Pelham is already in an advantageous situation retail-wise, Tim said. “Most economic development efforts include trying to land the “big fish” like auto suppliers, but should the large companies go out of business, so go a lot of jobs,” he said. “Pelham has a unique aspect with its highly diverse mixture of small commercial and retail businesses particularly in areas like the Highway 31 corridor. And since small business creates 70-75 percent of the jobs in this country, we want to continue to work and enhance that existing environment and recruit and nurture new business.” Pelham City Councilman Ron Scott, who served five years as the director of the Economic Development Association of Alabama and has been very involved in the formation of the CDA, said the new group has some homework to tackle right off the bat.

“There will be a study of other communities’ CDAs and a look at best practices,” Scott said. Another task will be compiling a comprehensive list of Pelham’s retail and commercial properties. “The field is very wide as far as looking at planning for existing properties and we have to have a thorough inventory,” Scott said. The CDA will also meet with developers to determine what they are looking for. “They will gather information on retail gaps or the type of businesses we don’t have, and that will help Pelham revitalize what is here now plus bring in new retailers to fill those gaps,” Scott said. CDA member Tracey Morant Adams said that she, too, believes in the importance of the retail sector. “I think more retail business is always a plus for a community—amenity businesses

that offer what residents want,” she said. “But most any good business that is going to create jobs for residents is beneficial as well.” She pointed to the importance of supporting the city’s financial base. “I feel Pelham has been very fortunate to have been successful with business recruitment and retention and I want to keep that going but expand it,” she said. “With a new school system, it’s very important to have a strong revenue generation to support the infrastructure.” There is great opportunity for Pelham’s business enhancement and growth, and Tracey is confident they will happen. “I feel Pelham is in a good position as an attractive area for retail growth with strong neighborhoods and a strong population, and I want to keep that momentum going.”

Throw Matt Murphy from a plane by making donations to CDKL5 research This September, Pelham Police Officer Dustin Chandler, along with Mayor Gary Waters, City Councilman Ron Scott, several Pelham city employees, and many others will jump out of an airplane as a fundraiser for research. Now in its second year, the Skydiving for CDKL5 Research event will occur at the Cullman Regional Airport on Saturday, September 27. This year, radio personality Matt Murphy agreed to join the jump, but only if $50,000 is raised—so the event is called “Throw Matt From the Plane.” Those who wish to raise awareness and money for the research of CDKL5, a rare seizure disorder that affects Dustin’s daughter Carly and hundreds of other children, have been making donations and pledging to skydive all summer, thanks in 38 PelhamOnline.com / Fall 2014

part to Dustin’s awareness efforts. At press time, more than $15,600 had been raised. “We will take any donation you are willing to give to this worthy cause,” Dustin said. “And don’t forget, if we reach $50,000 Matt Murphy will jump from a plane. He has stated he will not jump if we fail to raise the money!” For anyone who wishes to join them, the jump fee is $199, and a portion of the proceeds of every jump will be donated by Skydive Alabama to International Foundation for CDKL5 Research (IFCR). “Representatives Allen Farley and Patricia Todd each donated $1,000 to our fundraiser, and are issuing a challenge to ALL lawmakers to donate to CDKL5 research,” Dustin said. “This is not a red or blue issue. This brings

awareness to a deadly disorder and hopefully a cure.” US Congressman Gary Palmer pledged he would skydive if someone donated $5,000, and an anonymous donor has done just that. “Gary has confirmed since the money has been put up he will definitely jump out of an airplane!” Dustin said excitedly. “Gary is a man of his word, and he knows we need awareness and a cure!”

The band Kover Down will perform 80s, 90s, and 2000s music that will become the soundtrack to this jump. For more information, and to sign up yourself, visit: http://www.cdkl5.com.

PELHAM HEIGHTS HOTEL A.J. Wright

Pelham Heights Hotel [Photo courtesy of the Shelby County Historical Society & President Bobby Joe Seales] For a few years early in the 20th century Pelham had its very own resort hotel. The structure with 60 rooms was built in the summer of 1912 as a place for the annual encampment of Alabama Baptists. The grounds also featured a dining hall, auditorium, swimming pool and tennis

courts. The religious affiliation did not last, however; and the complex soon became a resort for the general public. The buildings were located off what is now County Road 52 on the mountain

Danielle Hardaman— Pelham’s Renaissance woman To say Danielle Hardaman leads a diverse existence is an understatement. A nanny by day, the 34-yearold Pelham resident spends her Thursday-Saturday nights as the lead singer for at least one of three area bands and, on Sundays, takes part in a Birmingham church choir. A Birmingham native, Danielle said she grew up around music with great-grandparents who were part of a Dixieland jazz band, a mother who played the piano and a father who played the guitar. “I started singing at about six, voice lessons at nine and then did a lot of talent competitions,” Danielle said. “Plus, my dad always played music by bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper—so I was a rock and roll fan from a very young age. It was kind of a natural thing.” The Hewitt-Trussville graduate became the first in her family to earn a college degree after receiving a musical theater scholarship from Birmingham Southern College. “I took voice, opera, straight and musical theater, dance, scene and history studies. It really broadened my ability and knowledge,” Danielle said. “Before, I knew

nothing about music theory or how music is created, and now I know more than I ever wanted to know.” Danielle worked as a real estate office manager for a year following graduation, “to pay the bills,” but had yet to venture out as a professional entertainer. “I’d sung in some backup groups and accompanied some acoustic guitar performers while in school, but that was it,” she said. That all changed when an office colleague encouraged her to attend auditions for a local band’s female lead singer slot. She got it, and for the next five years, she sang with the Love Shack band while also performing in several productions of the Birmingham Children’s Theater, and appearing in the Thirteenth Street Ensemble production of “The Fantasticks.” All the while, Danielle was teaching drama to children. “Most musicians, most artists, wear a lot of hats, and if you want to be a working artist and want to stay current, that’s what you have to do,” she said. “You can’t expect one gig to pay all the bills and keep you busy.”

Danielle is rocking a Rolling Stones shirt her late father gave her from a concert he attended many years ago.

Today, Danielle sings with two Pelham groups, About Time (a classic rock and roll cover band) and Candy Box (a 1950’s-1990’s cover band), as well as the Birmingham band Full Moon Blanket (original rock and roll). But it was her membership at St. Mary’s on the Highlands Church—for which she serves as leader of the choir’s soprano section—that led her to her “day job.” “A friend at church told me a family was looking for a nanny and that was a year-and-a-half ago,” Danielle said. “Today, I take care of a two-year-old boy and a little girl, who is three months. The little boy can’t say my name, so he calls me “Dida” and he plays his toy ukulele and sings and tells everyone, ‘I’m a rock star like Dida.’”

While Danielle’s occupations may seem completely unrelated, she says they actually complement each other. “Whether a lead singer or a nanny, you have to be entertaining, patient and deal well with craziness,” she said. “By doing both, I’ve found I communicate better with kids and adults.” As for the future, Danielle says she’s so happy “things are smooth sailing right now.” “I love my nanny family and singing with the bands and, in fact, About Time will be recording an original song in a couple of weeks,” she said. “But if someone were to pick up our song and we could end up playing the big towns... Well, who knows?”

Two Pelham Racquet Club junior tennis teams win state championship July 18-20 the USTA Junior Team Tennis Alabama State Championships were held at Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Al. Tournament Director Ginny Adams said this was one of the largest junior team state tourneys to date. Adams estimated there were at least 550 players and 64 teams. PRC/USPTA Pros Rusty Wilkes, Clay Parrish and Steve Faulkner teamed up with several parent captains to coach 11 PRC junior teams at state with close to 100 players. Wilkes,

Parrish and team captain Melanie Rehovsky coached the PRC Storm Intermediate 12s to a 3rd straight state championship. The Storm went 4-0 in the tourney and defeated the Triple T's 24-20 in the finals. Wilkes and captain Julie Anderson coached the PRC Challengers beginner 12s who finished as state finalists. Parrish also coached the PRC Piranhas beginner 12s team. Clay Parrish coached his PRC Pacers 18s to also finish as state finalists. Cliff Render was coach for

the PRC 14s Aces team. Team Captains Freddy Sanchez and Karen Cross coached the PRC Lobsters to win the state championship. The Lobsters defeated Tuscaloosa Crimson Aces 32-18 in the finals. Parrish and Wilkes both coach players on the Aces and Lobsters. The PRC Storm 12s and PRC Lobsters 14s qualified to represent Alabama as state champions at the USTA Southern Sectionals. The sectional tourney was held August 15-17 in Lexington, SC. The Lobsters 14s were coached by Clay

Parrish and had a great tourney, only losing two close matches, and finished by winning 28-27 vs LA. All matches were very competitive. The Storm 12s went 3-1 as a team. The only loss was to the eventual champion, NC. Wilkes coached the Team Alabama Storm 12s. Coach Wilkes said both 12s and 14s teams were in the top five best performances at sectionals of the past 18 state champion teams. Both the 14s & 12s won the last matches vs LA & SC to finish the tourney with wins for Team Alabama.
