From the Mayor’s Desk Got Real Questions? Get Real Answers! Call 663-9301 or Email: sonny@sonny-penhale.com Dear Residents, The Buck Creek Festival was another big success this year, even if Saturday night’s performance did get rained out. Thanks to Cris Nelson and all the volunteers who worked so hard to put this weekend together and all who came out and supported it. Helena Market Days are underway now, and if you have not yet attended one of these Saturday morning events, you owe it to yourself to drive over and experience it. My thanks to the volunteer work force who helps stage this family event and to all the guest chefs who volunteer their Saturday mornings to perform the cooking demonstrations. As this goes to press, Party in the Park, our Independence Day celebration in Old Town Helena is set to take place on Saturday, June 30. Hopefully, this is out in time to get lots of folks to attend. Kelly Nagy, Helena resident and member of the U.S Band, is working hard to make this year’s event a success along with Amanda Traywick, Joy Childers and many other dedicated volunteers. Thanks also to Papa Saia’s, the main sponsor for this year’s event. If you are not going to the beach or the lake for the weekend, be sure to come out and enjoy the festivities and the fireworks with us! While we are talking about Independence Day, please take a moment to stop and thank any service men and women you may know or come in contact with. Many of them are away from home serving in harm’s way as we celebrate our freedoms with good food and fun. As it states on our military list in this magazine of those from here who are serving: “We are the land of the free because of the brave.” Work is going on all over town with regards to our schools. Additions are under construction at Helena Elementary and Helena Intermediate, and mountains are still being moved for our new Helena High School! My thanks to all of you as you show patience with all the construction work.
Thanks to all the volunteers who are gathering to paint the interior of Helena Elementary. They got the paint donated and a complete interior paint job will be performed to the school at no cost! We had a lady in town make an apron and present it to City Council member Barbara Hyche recently proclaiming her as “The Flower Lady.” I appreciate Barbara’s dedication to not only serve our city’s needs as a member of the city council, but also to give back to the community be maintaining the hanging baskets and flower beds around Old Town and the municipal building, including the library. She also just became the only council member seeking reelection to earn her advanced Certified Municipal Official designation. Congratulations to Barbara on her latest achievement and also for her new wardrobe accessory. We are getting closer to starting work on the new Buck Creek Trails project, and I hope to have more to report to you on this in the next edition. When complete, this is going to be a feather in the cap of all those who call Helena home. Besides serving up great food, Zaxby’s has long been a supporter of local school fund raisers and have gained a following among Helena residents for the many ways they prepare and serve their chicken. I am happy to report to you that soon, you will no longer have to drive to Highway 31 to get your Zaxby’s fix. They have announced they are building in Helena as soon as is possible in the building on the corner of Hwys 91 , 17 and 52 near Publix that formerly was home to Shelby Cleaners. Please keep two of our Shelby County Commissioners in your prayers. Helena native Joel Bearden was hospitalized after suffering a bad bicycle accident, and Dan Acker was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. My prayers go out to them both and to their families along with my best wishes for speedy recoveries. Please keep Jamie Layton Cagle and her family in your prayers. You will remember Jamie is suffering from a rare
form of cancer and was featured on the cover and inside our holiday edition. Please keep her husband, Brandon, and their two daughters, Erin and Emily, in your thoughts and prayers, too, as they do their best to make Jamie as comfortable as possible. Thanks to all the members of the Helena Business Association, the event sponsors and all who attend the Sundown Cinemas each Friday evening in the Old Town Amphitheater. This is free, family entertainment and has become a tradition for many local families, especially those with young children. It is self-supporting in part because of the concessions they sell. Please come out on Friday evenings and enjoy a sandwich, drinks and a snack

as a way to help support this terrific weekly event. Finally, please do your best to shop in Helena whenever possible. You will not believe how much this helps us maintain your city services at a high level, and our local businesses really need your support! Enjoy Your Summer!
Construction projects are popping up all over town! Shown at the top is the new wing going on one end of the elementary school; in the middle picture, the intermediate school addition is shown; and right above this caption, the site for the coming Helena High School shows that mountains indeed can be moved. What a view it will have when complete. Helena is truly a “city on the move!” As this goes to press, there are several local baseball and softball teams winning and spreading the name “Helena” all over the place! GO HELENA! We’d like to publish pictures of all of them. Please send in your pictures and info to: helenacitynews@aol.com.

One L of the most IA ... important tools C E R we use to equip the SPFFE children we care for is our proprietary “Developmental OAssessment.” This tool was designed
to provide our parents with a regular report of academic and developmental progress. While it’s fun to celebrate milestones, it’s critical to monitor and encourage progress. Our assessment was carefully crafted using our state’s, “Alabama Early Learning Guidelines”, input from local kindergarten teachers and principals and the best information available across the US. We prepare and provide assessments every other month so that you are aware, every step of the way, where your child in on the way to success in life! When do we start our assessment process? Panther Day a Reason to Celebrate at Helena Middle School! Each year, principal Scott Knight says the kids start to get restless as May rolls around, but look forward to Panther Day as it not only means fun and games, but also that the summer break is just around the corner. This year was no different. Thanks to the all the sponsors who make it possible each year! And a special thanks to Dr. Priscila Denny at Oak Mountain Orthodontics (next to Publix) for once again donating T-shirts for all the kids to wear, as seen in the pictures. Many of the students have their classmates sign their T-shirts and they become keepsakes for them as they move on to high school. Dr. Denny donated over 1,000 T-shirts this year for the event.

Old Towne Music offers instruction beginning as early as newborns
O
Twins Cameron and Caitlen Pannell enjoy guitar and piano lessons at Old Town Music
ld Towne Music is now offering violin lessons! Violin students performed for the first time at the recent year-end recital. “Kindermusik is our main focus but we want to let everyone know about the violin lessons, as we have had so many requests,” said owner Erin Trapolino. Two summer sessions of Kindermusik are underway—Sun & Sing and Creatures of the Ocean for 18 month – 3 years olds. Prior to the beginning of fall classes, Erin will hold two Kindermusik demo classes where parents can bring their children to try out the activities and learn more about what Kindermusik offers. The first class will be held Wednesday, July 18 at 5:30 p.m. The second will be Saturday, August 4 at 10 a.m. Both will be held at the Old Town Music studio and attendees will receive a free gift. Fall and spring semesters are 15 weeks each. A drawing for a musical instrument will be held at each demo. Early birds signing up for fall semester before July 1 receive a discount. “Throughout the 15-week semester, private lesson pupils participate in various contests where they earn points that accumulate toward earning a prize. Whoever earns the most points by the end of the year gets a trophy,” Erin said. “By recital time, all the children are very excited about preparing for their performance. Obviously, we want everyone to practice as much as possible so they can progress and we have a practice contest, too, in which the winner gets a trophy.” Erin grew up in Helena and attended the University of Montevallo studying vocal performance. She graduated from the University of North Alabama with a degree inCahabaDentalAd8.11A Commercial Music. She was7/25/11 part of an7:39 ‘80s cover PM band Pagecalled 1 the M80s and also
spent time working the business side of the country music industry in Nashville, Tennessee. Realizing that performance was her true passion, she returned to her hometown where her dream to teach voice and Kindermusik in her own music studio just seemed to fall into place. “I found I loved teaching and that it is so rewarding to see children in the Kindermusik program grow and develop week by week. “ Kindermusik, which came on the scene about 30 years ago, promotes cognitive development in young children ages newborn to 7-years-old, while also developing a lifelong love of music and learning. Kindermusik is a music and movement developmental class—it is fun, but every activity is geared towards developing the brain, motor skills, developing balance, developing speech and for ages 3 and up, getting children school-ready. The youngest child in Erin’s program is now 10 months old and began at the age of four months. Erin is the music director at her church, Prince of Peace, where she has sung for eight years and now leads the praise band. They perform a wide assortment of contemporary Christian music each week. Erin also sings for weddings. Contemporary Christian is Erin’s favorite musical genre and what she listens to around her house. “That is type of music I believe I was meant to sing; it serves a purpose for me.” Last fall students chose songs from the ‘80s—pop, rock or musical theater—and dressed up in 1980s attire for their first Theme Night Recital. This was a great success, enjoyed by all, and Erin is hoping to do another theme recital at the end of fall semester. Students who are more advanced and have developed better practice skills will be chosen to perform in the recital. Old Towne Music offers training in voice, guitar, drums, piano and violin. Erin also offers coaching lessons to prepare for auditions and for those performing in pageants. FYI: Kindermusik birthday parties are a stress-free way to provide fun for everyone! Old Towne Music is located at 811 Hwy 52 (across from city hall). Call Erin for lesson information at 205.563.9484.

n 1985, Russell Yawn began working at the Shelby County Sherriff’s office, first on patrol, where he was also System Administrator for their newly acquired file servers. In 1990, Yawn transferred to the Drug Unit. He was promoted to Sgt. in 1991 and then moved to Criminal Investigations. In 1993-94, Chief Deputy Tom Smitherman and Operations Captain Chris Curry realized the amount of potential evidence that individual and business computers could provide. “We were the first local agency to have a lab to process digital evidence,” Yawn said. In 1998, Yawn received his certification as a Certified Forensic Computer Examiner from the International Association of Computer Investigator Specialists. Yawn was part of the development team that included Randy Hillman and created the National Computer Forensics Institute training program. Their charter mission was to provide training worldwide in Computer Forensics – how to process computer evidence. Yawn himself trained officers from countries throughout the world. All the band members are from Helena and are Pelham High School grads. Brothers Whit and Tyler started playing guitar and bass in 2007. Playing guitar became an obsession for both of them. Three years later, Whit met up with a former teammate of his from the Pelham baseball team, Reid Aldridge. They spent many hours perfecting their sound, with Tyler playing along with them. This past January, Reid met up with his old classmate, Michael Adams, and they decided to give it a try as a complete band, and the result was the band known today as “Vertigo.” They play mostly ‘90s and early 2000 rock with a few timeless songs that have been revived in their own “Vertigo style.” Their set list includes songs by artists like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Three Doors Down, The Black Crows, Silverchair, Seven Mary Three, Seether, Fuel, and Matchbox 20. They have played at The High Note in Birmingham, Tyler Navarres and most recently at Shelby’s in Pelham, and they have a show scheduled for July 13 at Redline Bar and Grill in Hoover. They are planning to book as many shows as possible around the metro area to get their name out. You can check out some of their videos on YouTube. Their version of a ZZ Top can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUilrBvoDQY. If you’re a fan of rock, make plans to see and support our local guys when you get a chance.

Carl Suggs
Barber & Style Shop 500A Hwy 52W Helena, Alabama
(205) 426-1911 Carl Suggs Barber & Style Shop moves just over the hill on Hwy 52W (from Bessemer to Helena)
C
arl Suggs completely renovated the Pink & Blue Daycare building, located at 500 Highway 52W in Helena, to house his state-of-the-art barber and style shop as well. It now looks like a little strip center. Carl says he is happy to be in Helena now after his move from just over the hill on Morgan Rd. in Bessemer. Carl has 47 years of experience in the business, starting out at the old Brown’s Barber Shop in West End before opening his own barber shop in Midfield, where he operated for over 20 years before moving to the Morgan Road location. With his latest move to Helena (many of his current customers also call Helena home), Carl brings six licensed, professional stylists and barbers. Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop is
known for their friendly, light-hearted atmosphere where clients can relax and enjoy a nostalgic experience, getting a great haircut while feeling the pull to join in the conversation. (Think a modern version of Floyd’s Barbershop on the Andy Griffith Show.) The new shop offers seven barber chairs, two 42-inch TVs, an activity room for kids, an array of magazines and of course, the main attraction, the nice folks providing all the latest hair cuts. Carl operates an incredibly versatile and skilled barber and style shop, specializing in all types of haircuts for men, women and children. Women can receive a shampoo, cut and style, and include layering if they desire. First time haircuts for children are of special significance, and the cutting crew at
Suggs will ease you through those sentimental first snips. They strive to make this milestone a happy, exciting moment for you and your child and present parents with a “First Haircut Certificate” when the deed is done. For teens, they offer the latest trendy styles and cuts, and the staff is trained to correct those do-it-yourself haircut mistakes we all (or our children) have made. Men can get a regular cut or something more specific such as a fade or flat top. Beard and mustache trims are free with a haircut. For those wanting to remove their facial hair, Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop provides old-fashioned straight razor shaves with hot towel services just like the old days. The shop serves walk-ins only (no appointments available or needed), and it
is open Tuesday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The shop’s parking is convenient and handicap accessible. For those home bound due to illness, Carl offers in-home visits. We are delighted that Carl Suggs made the decision to bring his business and love of community to our city. The next time you’re having a “bad hair day,” or simply looking a “little shaggy” and need a cut or style, stop by Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop, and be sure to tell Carl and his staff they come highly-recommended by the folks at Helena City News. With friendly service and satisfied customers as their top priorities, look for Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop to quickly become a local favorite!

Yard Spotlight 2750 Piedmont Drive
At the peak hydrangea bloom time, take a journey through this luscious back yard like no other. When Gene and Cindi Jones acquired their home in Silver Lakes, it seemed as if destiny had brought them back to their Birmingham area roots. “We think Helena is the sweetest little place. We go to Helena Market Day each week during the summer and our grandson loves to go down to Buck Creek.” Their home, (on the market, by the way) was ideal, but the surrounding sloping yard of bedrock, clay and construction backfill was less so.
Their formula is simple—Cindi designs and directs and Gene mans the shovel. He placed the many rocks used for bed borders and the pond and waterfall. Twenty different kinds of iris—some descendants of her grandmother’s irises that have moved from house to house with them—intermingle with many varieties of daylilies and hydrangeas which are Cindi’s favorites. Veronica, with its spikey purple bloom, gets Cindi’s approval as “a great plant— well-behaved in crowded beds that blooms early and continually.” “We have twelve varieties of hydrangeas purchased at the Aldridge Garden sale. There are some 20 oak leaf, also lace caps and Pinky Winky, Little Lamb, Painted Lady, Annabelle and a Nikko Blue. “I have lost count of how many different daylilies we have,” Cindi says, “But my favorite is called Robed in Splendor, a pink bloom with ruffled gold edges and a yellow throat. Loving the outdoors, they have a sunroom off the top floor where they
are visited by a post-Labor Day mass of migrating hummingbirds and a lower back deck, made private by mass plantings and the craggy branches of a Shoal Creek Vitex tree. In this seating area, one toad lives in their watering can and other tree frogs and toads serenade
to tenor notes, provide tones from Music of the Spheres, adding to the happy ambiance. Two evergreen wisteria vines thrive as climbing end accents on the lower porch. Pots of mixed annuals surround the seating area holding purple fan flower, alyssum, impatiens, and purple shamrock intermingled with potted hydrangeas. Gene built the fish pond and adjacent waterfall feature where Texas Star waterlilies are just beginning to bloom nearby Siberian iris and papyrus. The Joneses enjoy cooking and entertaining and both sing in the choir at the Church at Brookhills. They will be potential mates nearby. hosting a family reunion at their home this August by which time the Natchez “We don’t fish or golf; this is where white crape myrtles with their heavenly we spend our time.” scent will be blooming. Sconces made by Gene from the “God placed us here—this yard is moldings from a 150-year-old house His handiwork,” said Cindi. make for unusual light fixtures. “…In so many ways, his leadership makes a positive difference for all of us. … The mayor has consistently spoken out in support of children and in support of needed education initiatives that improve the learning opportunities we can afford our students. His bold vision also improves the quality of life for Helena’s citizens. The mayor’s determination and leadership were instrumental in purchasing land for the new Helena High School and athletic complex. These facilities will serve Helena’s children for years to come! I am particularly grateful to work in a community where the city’s chief leader is an honorable man who makes decisions based on what he believes is best and right for the community. We need more leaders like Mayor Penhale. I look forward to many more years of working together with him.”
Mary Cooper, Principal, Helena Elementary School “…I honestly don’t think that Helena Middle School would be here had it not been for the vision and work of Mayor Penhale. Anytime that we have called on the Mayor for help or assistance, he has been there to lend his support. I look forward to continuing to build the relationship with him as we move forward.”
Scott Knight, Principal, Helena Middle School “…Mayor Penhale has been a supporter of HIS through the years. He worked tirelessly to see that a new intermediate school was built here in 2001. Since then, he has worked in partnership with us to do good things for our kids. …Mayor Penhale, thank you for your support of HIS.”
Dr. Wayne Williams, Principal, Helena Middle School “I have known Mayor Penhale for many, many years. He is honest and reliable and has always had the best interest of the City of Helena foremost in his mind and heart. I wholeheartedly endorse him and his candidacy to continue as the best Mayor Helena has ever had.” Robby Owens, Shelby County District Attorney “My wife and I have been living in Helena 15 years, and have seen a lot of growth. We have two boys who have attended HES, HIS, and now HMS. …I cannot thank Mayor Penhale enough for all he’s done. He has made the City of Helena what it is today—a growing city with a small town feel!” Barry Ellis, President, Helena Kiwanis “My family is proud to live in a city run by a mayor with a big heart who runs the city with a sense of integrity. It is good to know we have a mayor that loves kids and supports our Youth League. …We are very comforted by the fact that the mayor is so dedicated to family and community.”

The
Future is in Good Hands
With Pelham High School ’ s Helena Graduates of 2012
Each year, Senior Counselor Amanda Waldrup (moving on herself this July after serving Pelham High students the past 12 years), selects six students that represent the graduating class well. The students each share their favorite memories from PHS and fill us in on their future plans. The day has finally arrived, and each and every graduate should be commended for this major milestone in their lives—earning their high school diploma. Now with so many options and opportunities from which to choose, our wishes for all of them is a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our (graduation) caps are off to you—PHS Class of 2012! Stetson Dubberly (son of Traci and Mike Dubberly): Stetson’s favorite memories of PHS were winning the pep rally as sophomores, beating the Seniors in powerpuff on a goal line stand, and being a letterman. Favorite PHS teacher was “Mrs. Burnett because she really takes joy in her job and has always been helpful to me, especially through her teaching,” he said. “The greatest influence in my life has been my parents and youth pastors. They have helped shape who I am and my beliefs. I would be the same person today without them,” Stetson states. His future plans are to attend the University of Alabama to earn a business-related degree, most likely Management Information Systems. He says, “Roll Tide!” Twenty years from now, he will “hopefully be somewhere settled down and successful,” Stetson says, “but who knows what my future will bring.”
Laci Genry (daughter of Tami and Tim Genry): “My favorite PHS memory was my senior homecoming week.” Laci says. “I loved all the dress-up days, powderpuff games, and watching my last PHS homecoming game.” She said Coach Schrupp was her favorite teacher “because he challenged me not only in the classroom, but also helped prepare me for college.” Laci said, “My parents and three brothers have been the greatest influence on my life because they have always encouraged me to do my best not only as a student, but also as a Christian.” This fall Laci will be attending Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. She has not decided on a major yet, but will probably major in Public Relations or Global Economic Development. Fast forward to 2032 where does she see herself, “I hope to be married and have a family. I would like to be working for a non-profit organization where I can help people in need,” Laci said.
Bailey Ray (daughter of Jeff Ray): Bailey said her favorite memory of PHS was “marching at half-time with the Tower of Power Marching Band and being on the PHS colorguard.” Her favorite PHS teacher was “Mrs. Jackson because she was always helping me in hard times and being a patient, understanding teacher.” Bailey said the person who has had the greatest influence in her life has been her “Dad because he has always been my mentor and my best friend.” She plans to attend Auburn University this fall and major in Secondary Education Language Arts. So where does Bailey see herself 20 years from now, “Teaching high school literature and living happily with my family,” she says.
Will Sparkman (son of Mary Beth and Lane Bell): He talks about his favorite memories of PHS, “Since I come from a family of runners, cross-country was a good fit for me,” Will says. “I made some of my best friends during the four years marching in the band, and playing at the football games was always great.” He said his favorite PHS teacher was “Mr. Jackson because he really helped me realize how much I enjoy physics and math in general. The moonbuggy team he sponsors only furthered my interest in engineering.” The person who has had the great influence in his life has been his “current youth minister, John David Crowe, because he has shown me how true men of God should be,” Will continues. “He sets an amazing example of how we should follow Christ, and for that I am incredibly grateful.” This fall, Will be attending the Honors College at the University of Alabama where he plans to march with the Million Dollar Band and major in Mechanical Engineering. Twenty years from now, Will says, “My dream is to work for GE in the design and testing labs. Seeing just how man y things they’re involved in really got me interested in being a part of that one day.”
Darian Johnson (son of Cathy Johnson and Donnie Arnold): “My favorite memories at PHS are beating Vestavia my senior year in football and getting closer to all my friends throughout the school year,” Darian said. Mrs. Creel was his favorite PHS teacher, “Because she taught my favorite subject, math, and she was just an amazing teacher.” Darian declared, “The person who has been the greatest influence in my life would have to be my mother. My mom has been at every sporting event I’ve had since I can remember, and she’s my biggest fan. I love my mother because of everything she has taught me in life. Cathy Johnson is not only my mother--she’s also my best friend,” he concluded. Darian plans to attend Tuskegee University and major in Civil Engineering. He said he hopes to leave the university with a bachelor’s degree and a job. “In 20 years, I see myself spending a lot of time with my family, acknowledging my mother and everything she has done for me, and being a highly respected civil engineer,” Darian concluded.
Gracie Giang (daughter of Hai and Binh Giang): Gracie’s favorite memory at PHS was “helping the Theatre Department and Mrs. Stephenson with productions.” Her favorite PHS teacher was “Mrs. Kim Hinds because she opened my eyes to an artistic world and enhanced my interest in photography.” Her parents are her greatest influence. “They each have given me a wealth of knowledge that has turned me into who I am today,” Gracie said. Her future plans are to attend UAB and pursue a degree in medicine. Fast forward to 2032, Gracie says, “I hope to be married with a family and having a successful pharmaceutical career.”
Sounds like another great bunch of graduates about to take on the world. Good luck to all the Class of 2012!
ABOUT BARBARA Barbara has lived in Helena since 1999 and is an active member of the community. Barbara served as President and Vice-President of the Laurel Woods Home Owners Association. She currently serves on the Helena Library Board, Beautification Board and was recently elected to serve her 4th term on the Alabama League of Municipalities Executive Committee. In 2008, Barbara completed the Alabama League of Municipalities’ (ALM) Certified Municipal Official (CMO) Program and obtained her Certified Alabama Planning and Zoning Official designation. After attending several ALM seminars and numerous hours of additional training, Barbara recently earned the Advanced CMO designation—making her the most qualified, and only, Helena City Council member seeking re-election to achieve this status. “I have been asked numerous times how the City Council works together with our residents to improve our community. Contrary to popular belief, City Council members can not individually change policy. All members work together as one voting body.” Barbara
ACHIEVEMENTS
• After years of hard work, the dream of the city having its own Helena High School is coming to fruition with construction to be completed before classes start in 2014. • Barbara worked tirelessly to start Helena Market Days, an event designed to bring our community together on summer weekends giving residents easier access to wholesome and nutritious Alabama-grown food for their families. • You may have seen Barbara out putting up the hanging baskets and planting flower beds to beautify the Old Town business district and Municipal complex including the library. • Helped the City partner with private developers to complete the much needed Hillsboro Parkway, giving easy access to both our middle school and our coming high school. • Worked with the City to complete one of the best athletic facilities and community centers in the area especially for a town our size.
FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS:
Besides continuing to work on the above, if elected, I intend to: • Encourage responsible commercial development • Listen to your input and support your involvement in Helena’s growth • Work to see that city services keep pace with city growth “It is both an honor and a privilege to serve on the Helena City Council. As you know, Helena is distinctive in Shelby County for its great quality of life and small town feel. Preserving that distinctive charm has always been a priority for me, and with another term, I will continue to build a better Helena while staying true to our small town values. WE ARE NOT DONE YET! With your support, I will do everything in my power to keep our city moving forward for four more years. With your vote, we can make this happen together.” Barbara Paid for by the Committee to Elect Barbara Hyche, 139 Roy Court, Helena, AL 35080 Email: hychebarbaraf@yahoo.com

PHS Volleyball Star Porsha Tolbert of Helena Signs with Faulkner Eagles
Pelham High School senior Porsha Tolbert signed a letter of intent May 15 with Faulkner University-Mobile to play volleyball as Faulkner Coach Richey Dulaney looked on. Surrounded by her family, friends and teammates (current and past), Porsha delivered an eloquent speech. She thanked God first and foremost for giving her the ability to compete; her mom, Erica, for her love and support— taking her to games and cheering her on; and her dad, Randall, for his calls complimenting her play after games. Younger brother Dionté looked on. The Helena resident said her game and attitude improved due to her coaches, beginning as early as the youth league, through her high school years. Porsha said she had great mentors: former Lady Panthers Chandesha Billings, Whitney Billings and Jasmine Clark (all of whom received volleyball scholarships, respectively: Fort Valley
State University, the University of Kentucky, and Carson-Newman College). Porsha admitted that in the beginning, she had a bad attitude with a mouth to go with it, but was thankful that the sport helped her grow as a player which in turn had a positive effect on her entire life. There were several coaches that helped her during her volleyball career: Coach Jamie and Shawn helped her attack and jumping game. As an outspoken player on the court, Coach Tien Lee taught her to zip it. As a Lady Panther, Porsha said she appreciated Coaches Kara Ellis, Haven O’ Quinn and Kim Kiel during her years at PHS. By signing Porsha, the Eagles are getting an outstanding outside hitter who posted these great stats her senior year: 384 attacks/kills, 40 serving aces, 50
total blocks, 523 digs, 1 assist and 2.5 kills per game. She stressed again her thanks to all her coaches for helping her to become a better player and person.

HMS Softball Team has a Successful Season The Helena Middle School softball team won 15 games this year in route to capturing a second place finish in the league tournament. They played well all year, competing and improving as the season went on. “I am not a big fan of talking about their individual accomplishments (although they have some),” said Coach Sanders. Congratulations to the girls on an excellent season and good luck to our 8th graders as they play their way onto Coach Amy Sullivan’s Panther squad at Pelham High School next season.

From Denmark to Helena, Alabama! “My name is Katrine Ryttergaard and I am a World Heritage exchange student who has been living here in Helena since the beginning of the school year. As school is coming to a close I am preparing to return to my native country of Denmark. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank my lovely host family, the Bowlings. You guys have changed my life for the better! I would like to say thanks to Pelham High School, who offered me the wonderful opportunity to be a student. Being in school over here does not just make you learn the subjects, I have also learned how American society works and how people communicate with each other. And of course school has given me all my friends, who I love and will miss very much. Being an exchange student is an honor. You get to represent your country, while you’re having the time of your life. The past year has gone by faster than any other, but I’ve experienced so much, and I’ve grown to be a different and better person. I can honestly say that this year has changed my life forever, and I’m going to miss every single person I have met during my stay here. If there is anyone interested in changing someone’s life by becoming a host family, please contact Brandy Dahlen at 422-1748 or visit www.world-heritage.org for more information. Again, I would like to thank the Bowling family for bringing me in, and making me a part of their family. I will always have a home here in Helena, Alabama.” Katrine Ryttergaard World Heritage Exchange Student from Denmark

Mayor Greg Eddins
Hello Helena, I am Greg Eddins, owner of “Helena’s Landscape Supply and Nursery”, and a 24 year resident of Helena. I am the father of two children, Blane, a senior at Pelham High School and my daughter Rachel, a 6th grader at Helena Middle School. We are members of Riverside Baptist Church, in Helena. Since moving here in 1988, I have served our city in many ways. I have coached our children in football, and baseball, taught them Karate as a Taekwondo Instructor, and sponsored teams when I was not coaching. I have supported all of our schools with my time and finances as well as rolling up my sleeves and building a football field at HMS, and sodding the playground at HIS. I have helped many civic organizations in our city including Kiwanis, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and many others. I helped the Helena Explorers with civic projects and continue to support our Police and Fire Departments. The only way I can help the City of Helena anymore is to take my leadership to City Hall.

Letter to the Editor: LifeSouth Community Blood Centers discovered that the kindergarten, first and second grade students at Helena Elementary School are also very good teachers. LifeSouth, through its Five Points of Life in the Classroom program, taught students about blood cells, what they do and why they are important. The students also learned about the importance of blood donation and how blood donors can save lives. The children then went home and shared what they’d learned with their parents. Those parents and the school faculty teamed for an amazing blood drive the following week, where 54 units of blood were collected. Thanks students, thanks parents, and thank you teachers for this success that will save lives in our community. Sincerely, Ashley Smith LifeSouth Central Alabama District Director

HELENA’S
Landscape Supply And Nursery
Howdy Helena, reg Eddins here from Helena’s Landscape Supply and Nursery, seems like we are getting our share of the rain this year and that’s a good thing! With the heat coming and all of this rain, be on the lookout for “FUNGUS”! Brown patch is really common under these conditions but can be treated with Fertilome Systemic Fungicide, Bonide RTU Systemic Fungicide, and Fertilome F-Stop granular Fungicide as a preventative. Don’t forget to clean and spray all of your lawn equipment also. The fungus in your yard will be spread by your tools if you don’t clean. It’s never too late for Pre-emergent, so if you forgot to put it out last month, go ahead and do it with this month’s application of Lawn food plus Iron (Orange Bag). We recommend Hi-Yield with Dimension (Red and Yellow Bag)as a pre-emergent. If your hanging baskets look a little pale, you will need to give them a shot of liquid fertilizer and them hit them with some Osmecote Fertilizer. Osmecote will feed them until the end of summer. Don’t start cutting your grass higher to keep it green when cutting like a lot of people do. Use liquid Ironite to keep it green from the stem to the end of the blade. You should only cut about a third of the blade off at any one time. If you have missed some cuts due to the rain, its okay, just keep that Bermuda to about 1.5 inches high. Last but certainly not least, remember the services provided by Helena’s Landscape Supply and Nursery. We are a full scale landscape and lawn care company that includes lighting, irrigation, retaining walls, patios, playgrounds, and many other outdoor services. Stop by and see us or give us a call!

Thanks to Kelly Nagle of the U.S Band, his wife Lyne, Amanda Traywick, Jennifer Richards, Michael Tsimpides, Joy Childers and all the rest who have worked tirelessly to put the event together. Hey, who is that guy in the middle with the white beard?

Girl Scouts Travel to Mobile “Girl Scout Troop 7220 from Helena Intermediate spent a night in February living aboard the Battleship USS ALABAMA in Mobile. Led by Lisa Pitts and Carrie Radice, the troop learned something about a “Battlewagon” in World War II. The troop also explored the Submarine USS DRUM, which ranked 8th among all U.S. Navy subs for the amount of enemy shipping tonnage she sank. The trip enabled troop members to better understand and appreciate the contributions made by military personnel in times of conflict when America’s basic values of liberty and freedom are threatened. USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park is dedicated to Alabamians who served in all branches of the military and is an independent agency of the State of Alabama.” Troop Members who attended were: Kristin Radice, Sarah Pitts, Hailey Pearson, Aria Palladino, Nadia Ghabayen, Abby Douglas, Madeline Bryan, and Isabella Toole. The troop was escorted by their leaders along with Kim Pearson and Teresa Palladino.

Dancing Daylily Garden
fter much hard work, Crystal and Chuck Hamrick are opening Rio’s Bar and Grill at the site that formerly housed City Cafe (next to Tejano’s Mexican). Rio’s is an “over 21” bar, open between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. The new bar features pool tables, dart boards, karaoke, live entertainment, big screen televisions, an internet juke box and Golden T Live (a video game Crystal admits being addicted to). Follow Rio’s on Facebook to see what nights they will be offering free pool, open mike night and much, much more. Rios’ owners say they are a bikerfriendly bar, and they invite bikers to join them on Thursday Bike Night. Aside from the activities and Crystal’s signature drinks, Rios has a simple yet delicious food menu. You’ll want to try their signature Rio burgers and tater tots, where you top off each with your

Owners Becky and Morris Parr share the story of their serendipitous meeting at Cajun dance night at the Concordia Club in Birmingham. New to the club, Morris was appreciative that Becky and her friend took turns showing him the steps. “I mentioned to him that I grow daylilies,” Becky says. “He told me that he did, too—both colors—yellow and orange.” When Becky invited Morris to an AHS local daylily meeting, he impressed her with his purchase of an $80 specimen. The best part about Rios is the relaxed, cozy environment. It is decorated beautifully, with a custom built authentic, copper-top bar. Rios has a “Cheers” feel; they want to be a welcoming, friendly, neighborhood bar. Being residents of Helena and with Crystal’s experience in bartending on the local bar scene, Rio’s opens with a great following. Just as customers keep up with Crystal, she keeps up with them and has established long term friendships along the way. Chuck and Crystal consider their customers as family. An official grand opening is planned a few weeks after the initial opening, so watch for their signs. Drive on over to Rios, where everybody knows your name (or soon will!).

Some blooms have a waxy sheen, such as Waxmint. Many a hybridizer is on the quest for a true blue daylily—there are already some handsome purple cultivars and some that combine blue and purple. Becky says that most of the blue names are already spoken for, and there are varieties considered to be blue-eyed, such as Bluegrass Music, Bluegrass Memories and Jitterbug Blues. Dancing Daylily Garden has the beginnings of an Alabama section—Alabama Jubilee and Alabama Wildfire, Bama Bound, Bear Bryant, and Lady Bear Bryant, then there’s Flying Tiger, Adorable Tiger, and War Eagle. Morris and Becky are both garden judges, and Morris is currently the President of the Central Alabama Daylily Society. Becky is the Membership Chairman for Region 14 and is “always looking for new recruits into this crazy but wonderful world of daylilies.” Dancing Daylily Garden now has over 1,000 daylily varieties (some 70,000 have been hybridized and named since the 1930s) and it can best be enjoyed leisurely as you discuss which daylilies you may want to welcome to your own yard.
