A momentous occasion presents itself August 28 for Pelham residents. This is when you get the opportunity to reelect or change your city’s leaders for the next four years. It is important, perhaps this year more than ever, The Pelham City News was started and has to exercise your right to vote! Please register and grown with a positive vibe over the years, and I participate in this right we all enjoy as Americans. do not intend to change that. That said however, in this issue, I do feel somewhat obligated to say a (Source: www.alalm.org) few things and offer up a word or two about the current leadership in the city of Pelham. PELHAM MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS It has been astounding to watch the antics August 17 Deadline for registering to vote in the August municipal election of a politician who came into office by virtue August 23 Last day for voter to apply for regular absentee ballot of a run-off election, won by a mere seven-vote August 28 CITY ELECTION DAY (the fourth Tuesday in August) margin, go about the business of governing the October 4 Last day for voter to apply for regular absentee ballot City of Pelham as if he had been swept into office October 9 Run-Off Election Day (if needed) on a landslide mandate for change. General Election Rumors were rampant before the last election as to the real reasons Don Murphy wanted to October 26 Deadline to Register to vote in the General Election be mayor. Whether they were true or not is a November 6 General Election subject for debate elsewhere. This is not: a huge sewer and water rate increase was passed on his OFFICIAL BALLOT watch giving the city the funds with which to MUNICIPAL ELECTION extend sewer lines that would greatly increase PELHAM, AL AUG 28, 2012 the value of property he and/or his partners FOR MAYOR own or have an interest in. And the burden for (VOTE FOR ONE) this has been placed squarely on the backs of Don Murphy the residents and business owners of Pelham. Steve Powell The mayor’s plan, as stated in the July mayoral forum, is to extend the city’s sewer lines to the Gary Waters east of I-65, right across the aforementioned FOR CITY COUNCIL, PLACE 1 property. It is my understanding that some of the (VOTE FOR ONE) mayor’s property is also slated to become home Rick Hayes to the new HealthSouth 34-bed rehabilitation Teresa Nichols (i) hospital that he proudly proclaimed as one of his FOR CITY COUNCIL, PLACE 2 accomplishments at the same mayoral forum. (VOTE FOR ONE) (You may watch the forum on www.youtube. Lucas Burger com if you missed it; search “Pelham mayoral Ron Scott (i) forum” to see the mayor and two mayoral candidates in action.) FOR CITY COUNCIL, PLACE 3 In the debate, Mayor Murphy gives all the (VOTE FOR ONE) credit for the coming rehab hospital to hard work David Ladewig he has put in and the visit he and “a bus load of Mildred Lanier seniors” made to Montgomery the previous day Jim Martin to attend the final hearing of the Alabama Health Beth McMillan Planning and Development Agency’s Certificate of FOR CITY COUNCIL, PLACE 4 Need Board, which is in charge of approving or (VOTE FOR ONE) denying such hospital moves. (This motion by Maurice Mercer HealthSouth had been denied on more than one Jim Phillips occasion in the past.) Jeff Smith When I got home the evening of the forum, a level-headed friend who is a Pelham resident Robert D. Sullivan and familiar with the situation, told me that FOR CITY COUNCIL, PLACE 5 the mayor “had to be called to task on his claim (VOTE FOR ONE) that his work and visit to Montgomery was the Bill Meadows (i) reason for HealthSouth’s request to build in Karyl Rice (i) Pelham finally being approved.” My friend said that “a single mother from Pelham by the name

of Elaine Moore had been lobbying the state and HealthSouth for more than a year to get another option for rehabilitation patients to go to when Lakeshore, considered by many to be the premiere facility of its kind in our area, is at capacity. You can read Elaine’s story “In her own words” on the next page. We are happy to give this courageous young lady her due on the cover and page 3 of this issue. A Blue Cross employee, she presents herself professionally, and her story, along with video testimonies from others similarly affected, appear to have provided the tipping point with the Certificate of Need board. A huge thanks is due Elaine from all who will benefit from this high impact facility planned for the City of Pelham pending final appeals. Now back to the issue of expanding sewer lines across I-65. Nobody, least of all me, is saying there is anything wrong with expanding the city’s sewer lines. It’s necessary for any city to grow. But doubling the sewer and water rates to do so during a deep recession, while potentially profiting personally from a land sale in the process, leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many Pelham residents and business owners. In fact, we planned to write an article on one of Pelham’s oldest businesses in this issue, Pure Pack Ice, located off CR 52, only to find that they had made a decision to get out of the ice-producing business in Pelham, and were simply a warehouse distribution center now. This move cost six employees their jobs. (And this after producing ice here for over 40 years!) The great thing about living in America is that, as registered voters, we have the ability to make changes in our leadership, if we deem it necessary, every four years. We have the right to say, Enough! I urge you to consider whether you and the City of Pelham are, to borrow a phrase, “better off now than you were four years ago?” Whatever your feelings, do your best to become informed, choose your candidates, and let your voice be heard loud and clear August 28. There are the makings of an administration and city council of which Pelham residents can be proud featured in ads within this issue. I urge you to read their ads, Web sites or Facebook pages, and get acquainted with these candidates if you do not already know them. In my opinion, and those of others whose opinions I respect highly, these candidates offer Pelham residents the best opportunity to take full advantage of all the valuable assets Pelham possesses; to move the city forward in the coming economic recovery honestly, ethically and with a renewed sense of Pelham Pride! OK, I’m off my soap box now… I hope you had a nice summer! There is a lot to read about in this edition. Please let our advertisers know that you appreciate them bringing you the Pelham City News each issue by doing business with them whenever possible. And be sure to take advantage of offers inside, like the 20% off IHOP ad on the next page! Yours Truly,

A Mother’s Tragedy Changes Minds in Montgomery
Results in New Health Care Facility for Pelham Elaine Lee Moore, In her own words I am honored to have assisted in the project of bringing the HealthSouth Inpatient Rehabilitation facility not just to the City of Pelham, but for the benefit of all in Shelby County. My part in this project was small, yet extremely emotional, and played an important role in the many steps of the approval process. I was privileged to have had the opportunity at the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC) Hearing in September 2011 to share my Mother, Carol Yvonne Stamps’ testimony. It was her story that assisted in the SHCC Hearing’s approval of the adjustment to the state plan for Shelby County. I am again honored to share a brief summary of my mother’s plight with my fellow citizens in Pelham. My mother was diagnosed with atherosclerosis. This disease required numerous admissions, surgeries, and eventually amputations of both her legs. After one particular admission to a local extended care facility for inpatient rehab therapy, our life was completely and forever changed. My mother (who was only 53 at the time) was in need of inpatient rehabilitation after having an amputation of her leg. Our family’s desire was admission to HealthSouth at Lakeshore. Unfortunately, the facility was at full capacity. The only other option presented to us was a local extended care facility (nursing home). As a patient at this local facility for 13 days in 2010, my mother’s health rapidly deteriorated, and her well being was completely disregarded. She was abused verbally, her patient rights violated,
(pending appeals)
she was mistreated, over-medicated and her personal belongings stolen and rummaged through. She was not being encouraged during therapy and if not making progress would be sent back to her room and medicated for the remainder of the day. My mother was discharged from this facility and sent directly to the ER because the staff thought she was having a stroke. Instead, we found out just how over-medicated she was and discovered the numerous infections and ailments that had overcome her body from lack of care and pure neglect by the staff of this facility. My mother remained in the hospital for about 56 days due to numerous infections and other ailments that were a direct result of her admission to this extended care facility. These infections and the lack of care allowed her disease to progress, resulting in both legs being amputated to her pelvis. I firmly believe that had my mother received the care and treatment she was fully entitled to (and would have received at a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation facility), she would have recovered from surgery, improved her strength with therapy, and not endured the loss of both legs, MRSA, and numerous other ailments that arose from complications due to the neglect and lack of care she received in this extended care facility. Thankfully, in December, we were able to bring her home just in time to celebrate her birthday and the holidays. My mother continued to overcome aliments, heal, and strive daily. She was released by physicians for

light travel, and we began planning vacations that were long overdue. Unfortunately, those plans ground to a halt, as during the early morning hours on Mother’s Day 2011, a house fire claimed my mother’s life. With the testimony of the trials my mother personally endured during her stay at the extended care facility, along with a few other Shelby County residents’ video testimony and the dedicated presentation HealthSouth presented, the SHCC Board noted the great need our county faced for an inpatient rehabilitation facility and voted to amend the state plan and allow additional inpatient rehabilitation beds in Shelby County. I continued throughout the year to show my family’s support for this need at the Alabama Law Judge Hearing and most recently, the state Certificate of Need Hearing. I know without any doubt that the HealthSouth Facility in Shelby County will prevent another family from the experiences our family endured, especially my mother. The approval process for the HealthSouth project is just the first of many ways I plan to carry my mother’s legacy forward and honor her memory. I am currently researching and gaining support at all levels to have a bill presented by local representatives that would implement a plan to require all patients with limb amputations receive fire safety as part of their rehabilitation therapy. An amputee is faced with so many trials daily: physically, emotionally and mentally. Neither they nor their caregivers really have time to think about how they would respond in case of a fire. So, it’s become my heart’s passion to implement a plan of action, just in case. It is with faith that I am able to continue to share my mother’s testimony with others in the hope that no other family has to experience such acts of mistreatment and to be informed. It is with love, dedication, and passion that I hope to honor and carry my mother’s legacy forward for years to come.

Recently our children’s developmental progress was evaluated at a sister center by Success by 6®, a United Way® Agency. This evaluation measured developmental progress, capping it at 6 years, 11 months--2nd grade.
Our results were nothing short of spectacular. Nine of the children who graduated the 4K program were there at the beginning of the school year. Four of them tested at 2nd grade level, and the remaining five tested at first grade level -- all before they started kindergarten!
You shouldn’t have to “guess” if your child will be ready for school! From our careful selection of curriculum tools to our proprietary “Kindergarten Readiness Progress System”, we can help you make sure your child is ready for school. If you’re particular about your child’s

Pelham’s James Thomson earns US PGA certification In October 2007, a young golf professional in South Africa was given the opportunity to see the world and work in some of the most elite golf clubs the U.S. has to offer. Immediately after winning the largest Pro Am in South Africa, 24-year-old James “Jimmy” Thomson boarded a plane and headed to Florida. It has been said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy planning.” Such is the case with James, who decided to make his home in Pelham after marrying Pelham High school grad Kelly Smith. James, a PGA card holder in South Africa, received his U.S. PGA certification this past March. Despite having to start over, doing seasonal work and cleaning golf carts, Thomson has his eyes set on getting back to doing what he loves most: teaching and playing golf.

W. D. Foster and Colleen Ingram, accepting on behalf of her son, SSG (Staff Sergeant) Jonathan James, are pictured above. W.D. Foster served in the Army National Guard from
Dec. 1986 until Nov. 2008. He was training with his unit, 122nd CSG in Selma, Alabama, when he suffered a spinal cord stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Stationed first at Ft. Bragg, Foster also served in Qatar and Djibouti, East Africa and Iraq in 2004-2005. Foster has since become involved with Lakeshore’s Wounded Warrior Project/ LIMA FOXTROT which offers injured servicemen and women a variety of fun and challenging recreational opportunities at no cost to them. Foster participated in several camps and continues to workout, swim and play wheelchair football. He and his wife, Chelisa, are in the process of building a handicappedaccessible home.
SSG Jonathan James served in the Army and Army National Guard. Between two tours of duty overseas, he was a trainer, preparing soldiers to go overseas. James served in Iraq in 2005-’06 and Afghanistan in 2009-’10. James is the recipient of many awards, including the Bronze Star (Iraq) the Combat
Action Badge and Meritorious Service medal (Afghanistan). Although nearly 70,000 quilts have been donated nationwide since the program’s inception, National Quilt of Valor is still seeking quilt makers. Visit www.qovf.org for all the needed information to either request or donate a quilt.

Company B As a member of Alabama Army National Guard’s 1/167th Infantry Battalion Company B called to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Sgt. Jeff rey Malone of Pelham was deployed June 23. After returning from his last tour of duty in 2009, where he was a convoy medic with 172 missions, Sgt. Malone worked as a patient caretaker in the UAB trauma unit. “On my last tour, we ran up and down the eastern Afghanistan/Pakistan border. Many of the injuries we saw were from explosions— compressed discs, concussions, and deep lacerations,” Sgt. Malone said.
moved up three months when he received his first 30-day notice.
“I was also part of a surgical team that worked on the general populace as well with Medivacs of American, Canadian and British soldiers.” This time, he expects to be located about three hours inland from the border. As Sgt. Malone prepared, he was focused on his family. “The last time I was newly married, but now we have a son, Hunter. Monica and I want to make sure the communication lines are open. My priority has been to see they are provided for.” The Malones will have access to magicJack, Skype and cell phone communication. Both Jeffrey and Monica are graduates of PHS Class of 2007. as the failure rate in medic and nursing training is about 50%.” Monica remembers everything was in such a rush last time she hardly had time to think about it. “This time, even though it is a roller coaster of emotions, I feel a lot more prepared. I understand the time difference. I know a year apart is hard, but I know we will get through this,” she said. “This time, too, it isn’t just about me. I worry about the time Hunter will miss with his dad. But I do have some peace of mind because of all the preparations we have made.” Monica’s family will be nearby for her. Jeffrey’s family now lives in Ohio, and his brother is on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg, N.C. On the eve of his departure, Sgt. Malone said, “Our guys are all well trained, and we’ve been together for years. We are prepared to fulfill our duties.” Monica Malone, who is a rep for Thirty-One gifts, is raising money to provide every member of the 167th a personalized Men’s Essential Case (hygiene kit). Each $25 contributed will provide a kit for one of the 125 soldiers and will be filled with snacks and toiletries as well as a letter of thanks from a youngster at a Pelham YMCA camp. Robin Glynn Half the Woman She Used to Be Ask anybody who has tried to lose a considerable amount of weight and they’ll tell you—a series of root canals is a lot less painful and for most of us, imminently more doable. It is a stressful thing, exercising and counting calories, that many attempt but few accomplish. Robin Glynn says her motivation came from her daughter, Hailey. “With Hailey playing softball at UAB, I didn’t get to see her a lot her freshman year so my weight gain was easy for her to spot,”said Robin. At the end of her freshman year, she told me that I needed to do something about my weight. Not that I didn’t already know it. I was already taking medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and my cholesterol numbers were off the charts. As a family, we made a decision to join a gym in June, 2010. Because I had never worked out in my life, I also hired a trainer. Kevin Taylor, became my accountability partner in guiding me towards my initial goal of losing 110 lbs. healthfully. My original goal was, “I wanted to be the same weight as my daughter.” I haven’t taken any diet pills or supplements, have not had bariatric surgery or gone on any fad diets. It’s all about changing your lifestyle,” she said. “I was a fast food junkie, sometimes eating the stuff three times a day! You have to learn to eat differently. I started out by just counting calories. I now shop on the outer aisles of the grocery store, except for my cereal, where most of the fresh, unprocessed foods are kept. I focus on eating as many fresh foods as possible. In this regard, “I also had to realize that my nutritional goals are not necessarily those of the ones around me. That sometimes makes it hard because of all the temptations.” Robin is currently eating about 1,500 calories per day. At her heaviest, Robin says she hit the scales at 269 lbs. Today, at a svelte and toned 154 lbs., she is hardly recognizable to friends who have not seen her in a while. Originally from New Orleans, world renowned for its variety of rich, savory cuisine, Robin says she had to learn to make wiser choices. “Today, it’s all about the choices that I make that allows me to maintain a healthy weight.” Has it been worth it? we asked. “Oh my Lord, I remember the first time I got on a plane and didn’t have to ask for a seat belt extender. That in itself was worth it!” she exclaimed. “And shopping for new
16 PelhamCityNews.com / Late Summer 2012 /
clothes and constantly having to get smaller and smaller sizes. Wow, words cannot describe how good that feels.” From a size 26 down to a size 10 would make any woman feel like million bucks! To avoid pitfalls, Robin says she has had to alter her lifestyle choices in other ways too. “I try to avoid my triggers, like my favorite Mexican food and places where I was used to pigging out before.” Robin says for those who may be like her, having never worked out, “It took some trial and error to find the exercise routine that worked and was right the current for me.” She works out Mrs. Glynn with her trainer two days a week. “I’m in the mode right now where I am actually going to the gym seven days per week, but when Hailey is playing softball, my husband Lenny and I travel a lot to watch her play, so during their season, I might only get in the gym four days per week. “As a result, I only lost 10 lbs during the entire season this year,” she says. “But that’s OK. I was still going in the right direction. I didn’t get to where I was overnight and I didn’t expect to lose it all overnight, either.” Exercise is a big stress reliever for me,” she said. “I have recently added yoga to my weekly routine to improve my balance and flexibility.” She says she loves to spin, and definitely has her favorite spin instructor at her gym. “Spinning provides me a wonderful cardio workout.” In the end, I spend less money on trainers and a gym memberships than I did before on junk food, doctor’s bills and medicines. Robin is now off all diabetes and blood pressure medications due to her exercise and new eating plan, she reports. “The secret to being successful with your workouts is constantly changing up your exercise routine,” she said. “That’s where a qualified trainer is so beneficial. I never do the same routine two weeks in a row, so it never gets boring and it keeps your body guessing what you’re going to throw at it TO ADVERTISE, CALL 746-1188
next. That is what gets you progress, and ultimately, that’s what it’s all about.” Robin and Lenny Glynn have lived in Pelham in 1994. Besides Hailey, they have two sons, Justin, who graduated from Pelham High School in 1999 and Matthew who is lives in New Orleans. Ardent sports fans, you’ll still find Robin and Lenny at many Pelham High sporting events, like football and softball games.

Sarah Sudd represents her school at Lead America Conference in Chicago They say future leaders are born, not chosen, but I’m sure many start by being chosen for something by those in authority at a young age. Such is the case with Sarah Sudd, who was an eight grade student this past year at Riverchase Middle School. Sarah was nominated to attend a Lead America Conference this summer by Ms. Hyatt, an assistant principal at RMS. Sarah is a member of the national junior honor society, RMS volleyball team, RMS Band, and volunteers for many causes: fund raisers for Children’s Hospital and the National MS Society; she organized the NJHS at RMS to sell small blue ribbons to raise money to help support a young boy battling cancer; helped arrange RMS as a drop-site for the Salvation Army after the devastating April tornadoes and is volunteers at the Pelham YMCA with youth summer camps. Sarah starts Pelham High School this month. She enjoys playing sports and is on the PHS JV volleyball team. The Lead America conference she chose to attend was the Explore Medicine and Science conference at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. It was held July 9th-16. Sarah says she hopes to be a pediatrician one day and knew this conference would be an incredible opportunity. While in Chicago, Sarah got a glimpse of what college life is like. She stayed in a dorm room on campus and met new friends from all over the country. Their days were filled with lectures and hands-on clinical experiences. Participants actually held and learned about several different body organs such as the lungs, heart, brain and intestines, watched a live autopsy and viewed an amputation surgery. Sarah and the other participants worked on case studies and learned how to interview patients and present their findings. (If she came out of this still wanting a career in medicine, I’d say she’s well on her way!) She said she is grateful for the prayers and support from family, friends, neighbors, Ms. Hyatt and all her former teachers at RMS. Sarah is looking forward to her freshman year at Pelham and eagerly searches out other opportunities to follow her dream of becoming a pediatrician one day. Lead America students are selected by their teachers based on their academic achievements, leadership qualities and compassion/volunteerism. Congratulations to Sarah on her nomination, and we thank her for sharing some of her experiences with our readers. Sarah is the daughter of Sandy and Dan Sudd of Pelham.

Christian Preschool
Now Enrolling!
Grace Community School & Daycare is now open on Helena Road in Pelham! Director, Nate Wells, and his wife, Kristy, are no strangers to Christian preschool. They have over 30 years combined experience with early childhood Christian education. Nate graduated from William Carey College with a degree in history and education. During his apprenticeship in Florida, he obtained a Masters in Christian Education. After completing their training, Nate and Kristy managed and taught at the school in Port Charlotte, FL, with much success. In 2003 the young couple moved to Alabama with their three children. Here they helped grow another
Christian preschool program. As the school grew, so did the Wells’ family. God blessed them with two more children. Mr. Nate states, “The Lord opened the door and provided us the opportunity to open up our own ministry, one that fits our style; community based with wonderful fellowship with the children we’re caring for as well as their parents and staff. We feel that the families we serve will benefit from our experience, not only as educators, but as parents to five children. We have a warm and inviting atmosphere that you feel from the moment you enter our doors,” commented “Mr. Nate.” The students at Grace Community will have Bible time every day with Mr. Nate. “Bible class is my special time with the kids. They’ll recite the 23rd Psalm, have a Bible story, sing songs and recite the 10
commandments daily. I want to instill character traits into the children who attend our school that will last a lifetime.” Grace Community uses the Abeka curriculum from Pensacola Christian College. “My wife and I really like the Abeka curriculum. Our 3 sons and 2 daughters have all gone through the Abeka reading program, and the results have always been wonderful. They all learned to read before they were 5-yearsold, and students under our care have had the same success, reading on a 2nd and 3rd grade level at the end of Kindergarten. We have also been pleased with the Kindergarten students’ scores on the SATs, most always 99th percentile! We have seen amazing results over the years. Our preschoolers really can read!” Grace Community School & Daycare is offering a special

Former PHS Student Graduates and Starts Charitable Foundation When it comes to assistance for disabled students, one size does not fit all. Ben Hedrick, 24, has lived with cerebral palsy his entire life and has a very personal perspective on the ways in which the challenges that come with the pursuit of higher education can be met. A 2006 graduate of Pelham High School, Hedrick graduated Cum Laude from the University of Mobile this past December. “I wanted to do a business management track and get a broad base of knowledge so I could run ‘The Hedrick Foundation.’ This idea came to me in 2009 and I told my parents, ‘I just can’t get this out of my head.’” “When I began at the University of Mobile, I became friends with Brian Boyle, then in charge of student services and the person responsible for getting me set up. When he became VP of Institutional Advancement, he and I began working on this idea. The Hedrick Foundation was incorporated in August 2011 and granted non-profit status in April 2012.” “We are now trying to get the word out to let people know what we are doing. We approached this carefully and methodically and conceived a two-prong approach—to help students with financial burdens and to work with the student and their family to lessen logistical barriers.” “Whatever the gap is for the student, say if they need special equipment, we can loan it to them. We help them be able to be involved in school life and have as normal a college experience as possible.” An example Hedrick cites is getting a health care company to pay nursing students to assist disabled students with their basic needs. This gives care-minded students an opportunity to have
a job right on campus. Hedrick had student helpers whom he could contact by text or cell phone to assist him in preparing for classes and activities. “We want to make colleges aware of this system we’ve implemented and how well it works.” Schools have requirements that they must meet for disabled students, but there are gaps in those obligations, and that is where the foundation would help provide resources. Hedrick and the board members are currently developing criteria and the qualifications that will be required. Already in place is the requirement of a 2.25 GPA and eight hours of corporate service for those who receive assistance. Hedrick is never without Kirra, his mellow golden retriever service dog and good companion for 51/2 years. She assists by picking up objects, opening and closing lightweight doors and can fetch help if needed. A friend came daily at college to walk Kirra; another helped groom Kirra weekly. At the University of Mobile, Hedrick was a member of Delta Mu Delta, the business honor society, headed the campus prayer organization for a year and through these, built friendships. In 2010 he interned with United Cerebral Palsy. Hedrick aspires to take his mission nationally first and internationally within ten years. Visit www.hedrickfoundation.org to learn more about the organization.

Pelham High’s Ally Slaughter shines as UAB finishes its first season of Sand Volleyball When UAB and Florida State took to the sand this year, it was the first-ever collegiate sand volleyball match played anywhere as an NCAA-sanctioned sport. Coach Hal Messersmith, a veteran of the coaching profession, serves as the director of volleyball operations for UAB’s indoor volleyball team and coaches the sand volleyball team, too. The Blazers’ sand volleyball roster is composed of the same players who make up UAB’s indoor team in the fall. “Since it’s an outdoor game, there’s more of a `party’-type atmosphere,” Said the coach. “If it’s a beautiful day, we’ll have a lot of fans out there. The biggest thing is that it’s relaxed and fun. Some of the benefits of adding a sand volleyball program are that it helps with recruiting both indoor and outdoor volleyball, and it allows the girls to have a place to try and play professionally when they’re done. There are a lot more professional leagues in sand volleyball than there are in indoor volleyball. You have to go overseas to be a professional in indoor volleyball. The biggest thing, though, is that it allows your volleyball
team to train all year long and to recruit players from coast to coast. It just gives girls more of an opportunity to play.” Collegiate sand volleyball is rapidly gaining in popularity. “It’s definitely gaining popularity really fast because there are a lot of schools that are adding the sport. There were 16 this past year, and they expect to have double that next year. I think the sport is going to be huge. Only one state now has high school sand volleyball and that’s Arizona. I don’t know how quickly other states will add high school sand volleyball, but if I read correctly, there are 300,000 girls participating in sand volleyball all across the country in club sports. Programs like ours give them a chance to go play in college. Our girls love it. They want to be out here every day. Our school built us such a beautiful facility, they are excited to be out here. There’s no doubt in my mind that the United States men and women winning gold medals in the Olympics the last few times has made an impact. The television popularity of that sport in the Olympics has been phenomenal, and that adds interest from around the world.” Pelham High School grad, Ally Slaughter, a rising junior at UAB on a volleyball scholarship, is a star on the sand and plays indoors as an outside hitter. She boasted a 6-3 record in the sand this past season, which just finished. With her striking good looks and athleticism, don’t be surprised if you see Ally making waves in the sand on TV soon! Though the sand season has come to a close, Ally is set for the indoor season which kicks off August 24. Good luck Ally and all the UAB volleyballers!

Driving down Pelham Parkway, one can’t help but notice the bright and cheery looking flower shop with the yellow awning out front. Pelham Flowers by Desiree, with its inviting facade, was purchased in October 2009 by an extremely talented and enterprising young floral designer named Desiree Shrestha. Desiree was born and raised right here in Shelby County, so she knows the turf. Being nosey and into genealogy, this writer had to ask about her last name. Desiree met her husband, Niran Shrestha, a native of Nepal, in 2002 while she worked at Homewood Florist and he was finishing his degree in electrical engineering at UAB. After having coffee, she says, the two became inseparable. They married two years later in 2004. Son Jaden was just a wee infant when Desiree bought Pelham Flowers in 2009, but he has been a fixture at the store ever since. “Now three, Jaden loves tinkering around the flower shop,” she says. “He’s even learning all the flower names. He has a real talent for arranging, too.” Could an heir apparent be more obvious? This is truly a family business. Niran lends a hand when he gets off his job at Southern Company and helps with deliveries on the weekends. “And Niran has been a Godsend with our thriving wedding business,” said Desiree. Champion round out the gifted crew at Pelham Flowers by Desiree. Desiree says she feels she was truly ‘led’ here. “I just fell in love with the place from the first time I saw it,” she said. “I stopped in one day and told the owner that if she ever wanted to sell, I wanted to buy the shop. Then every time I’d drive by here, I’d say, ‘There’s my shop!’” Sure enough, the call came about six months later that the owner was ready to sell. And the rest, as they say, is history. Since assuming ownership, Desiree has been cited for numerous awards, such as the prestigious Bride’s Choice Award and Home and Garden named them one of the Top 5 florists in the state of Alabama. In addition to delivering beautiful arrangements and plants for customers anywhere they need to go, Pelham Flowers by Desiree features a large selection of fresh flowers, plants, dish gardens and other terrific gift and seasonal home decorating ideas involving flowers. Desiree is a multi-talented floral designer and says if you can imagine it, she and her gifted staff can create it with fresh-cut, dried or silk flowers! They make baskets, too. “Fresh cut flowers are the perfect foundation for terrific gifts for most any occasion,” says Desiree. “If you have an idea in mind, call us, and we’ll take it and run with it!” Visit them online at: www. PelhamFlowersByDesiree.com or call them at (205) 663-9028. Better yet, stop in to see what the ladies have whipped up lately! They are conveniently located at 3105 Pelham Parkway, across the street and about a quarter mile north of city hall.

New Veterinarian at North Shelby County Animal Hospital Dr. Shae Hicks, a graduate of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, came to North Shelby County Animal Hospital in April after working three years at Standifer Animal Clinic in Homewood. Dr. Hicks grew up in Gardendale with horses, dogs and cats. “Growing up I was obsessive about making good grades so I could get into vet school. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a veterinarian. It was a guiding force in my life—that’s the only thing I ever wanted to be. I love coming to work every day,” Dr. Hicks said. “I think it’s important to talk with clients about their pet’s home life; if there are behavioral issues, I want to help them find a good balance that works best for everyone’s needs.” Dr. Hicks is particularly interested in small animal internal medicine, oncology and all types of surgery.
Dr. Hicks and Scott Register, the longtime radio host of Reg’s Coffeehouse now heard on Birmingham Mountain Radio, recently married. Register, too, is an animal lover who works with Weimaraner Rescue and is a former board member of The Greater Birmingham Humane Society. The couple just returned from their honeymoon in Italy where they not only enjoyed the architecture, but meeting other pets and owners such as a Lagotto, an Italian Lake dog that also hunts truffles. At home, they live with two adopted dogs, Albert Einstein and Aubrey, a pit bull mix. Monet, their cat, was Dr. Hicks companion throughout vet school at Auburn. “This is my community—I have family all around this area. I hope to be here long-term working with Dr. Chandler, Dr. Jordan and our great staff.”

Tony’s Hot Dogs a Pelham Tradition
Joseph Tortomasi, owner of Tony’s Hot Dogs in the Southgate Shopping Center on 31 at Helena Road, worked in his family’s food business (Sneaky Pete’s) beginning at age 12 and throughout high school. Tony was a family friend who owned the restaurant for about a year before Joseph, at age 24 and with his parents’ support, bought him out. From there he never looked back. “By the grace of God, this place has been growing from day one, and we’re extremely blessed that today, some nineteen years later, we’re busier than ever,” Tortomasi said. “We have a great following from the community, and some of my very first customers are still with me today.” “Those loyal customers are the reason that we serve breakfast until 10:30 a.m. You’d be surprised how many folks stop here at 5:30 a.m.” Tortomasi arrives at 3:40 a.m., and his staff arrives at 5:00 a.m. “It’s like a big family—we know many of our customers by name. We also know what they will order—people are creatures of habit. Our customers know they can get in and out in good time.” The menu lists twelve hot dog variations including the Junk Yard Dog shown above.
They serve an 8 oz. hamburger with all the fixings, plus a salad version. Chicken, Philly Cheesesteak, wraps, even a fried bologna sandwich are all on the menu. And Tony’s will customize an order any way you like it. Tortomasi recalls, “We used to have a customer who drove for BFI who would slow his truck at the front door, honk his horn, (the signal to place his order), then proceed to emptying bins behind the center before coming back by to pick up his order.” Currently the Donohoo Auto guys come in and have burger challenges—they order multiple patties and time each other. Misty Hall, Joseph’s better half, has been at Tony’s for fourteen years. They are parents to Austin, a rising PHS freshman and A. J. (Anthony Joseph), who is two. With a six-day, 12-hour schedule, Joseph and Misty joke that their only hobby is eating out after work each evening. “We love for people to come and eat with us, so we go and spread the love by eating at other restaurants,” Misty explains. “It’s a demanding business and you have to have a passion for it,” Tortomasi says. “I couldn’t do this without the community, and God and a great team of employees.”

Outstanding Curb Appeal 126 Hampton Lake Drive A lot of dirt had to be moved in the beginning before the beautiful home and yard at 126 Hampton Lake Drive could take its place serenely overlooking the hills and valleys adjacent to Oak Mountain State Park. Timothy and Cathy Payne had long wanted to build a home and even chosen their blueprint design before finding a suitable lot. Flat it was not, but builder David Brady was able to level the midpoint of the hillside and add a retaining wall enclosing a generous stone patio. This gave the family a
wonderful outdoor area for entertaining. During Timothy’s career with AGR (Active Guard Reserve), the Paynes lived in several Alabama towns, and upon his retirement, he was able to spend time on site often during the months between October 2003 and July 2004, before returning to work with AEMA. “Cathy and I are both from Birmingham, and we have a big family in the area that enjoys our barbecues. Our daughter, Angela, had her wedding here in the courtyard, as well as two of our nieces.”
a stone waterfall and pond with aquatic plants and Koi. The Koi, once only two inches long, are now sizeable with appetites to match. They eat bugs and algae and of course, any Koi flake or pellet delicacy proffered. “The deer have made their own trail through here, grazing on a lot of what we planted. When we first put in oak-leaf hydrangeas, they ate them to the ground the very first night,” Timothy and Cathy recall. Butterfly bushes, cotoneaster and a yellow trumpet vine have
thrived, nonetheless. Annuals and perennials grow protected in semi-circular beds inside the gated patio. The retaining wall lends a feel of Old World charm, and Cathy says she continues to experiment with finding plants that tolerate full sun such as day lilies, coleus and begonias. Spring and fall are the most enjoyable months on the patio. The handsome central fountain is from Aquatic Gardens and surrounded by Stella d’ore day lilies.

What says summer more than Sno Biz has been a fixture at the corner of Hwy 31 and Helena Road since 1992. Open from March til the week prior to Thanksgiving, Michelle Watson and her staff watch their crowds grow as the weather gets hot. Weekend days in July and August are non-stop and they estimate some 100 gallon-size blocks of shaved ice are served to around 800 people. “Our friendly staff makes it our mission to serve everyone quickly, so they know even if they have to stand in line it won’t be for long,” owner Michelle Watson said. Watson was living in New Hampshire and two feet of snow was on the ground when she noticed a shaved ice kiosk at a local mall. “There was a long line and the owner and two
employees handled everything.” At that time, the Watsons owned a Domino’s franchise that Michelle knew to be more demanding, and an idea was planted in her mind. Later, moving to Alabama, Michelle realized the shaved ice concept had not yet come to the south. Beginning as a distributorship, the business trained and opened stores in a four-state area. “This location has always been successful, and I decided to operate it as my one retail location. It’s a fun business, our quality is good and our prices even better!” The day starts off with one of her staff of 17 mixing the syrups. The sign at Sno Biz indicates some 100 flavors, and you can also request a custom combination of your choice. This summer’s new flavor is Royal Caribbean, which combines pina colada, peach and strawberry. It’ll make you want to pick one of the colorful hibiscus blossoms that accent the pavilion and stick it behind
Michelle Watson welcomes Matthew, Caroline and Lana Crumpton who often stop by Sno Biz on summer days after bowling at Oak Mountain Lanes. It makes for a special double-treat day, Caroline observed.
your ear! One of Michelle’s favorites is coconut cream pie. “It’s very refreshing — I never get tired of it.” Sno Biz also serves smoothies, shakes, and iced blended coffees. Katie O’Brien, now a student at UA, has worked at Sno Biz the past five summers. “My grandmother used to bring me here. Then when I was old enough to drive, I would come by and meet my friends here.”
Katie says the small cup size only has about 60 calories, unless you want to add the sweetened, condensed milk topper for 50 cents to make it more like ice cream. Stop by Sno Biz and try a Hula Cooler, Tahiti Twist or Blue Hawaii. Get adventurous with Frog in-a-Blender or just go with their most popular flavor, Homemade Ice Cream. You really can’t go wrong!

NOW OPEN! Rio’s Bar & Grill Helena features Service Ind. & Bike Nights!
A
HELENA 664-0366
fter much hard work, Crystal and Chuck Hamrick opened Rio’s Bar and Grill at the site that formerly housed City Cafe (next to Tejano’s Mexican) in Helena. Rio’s is an “over 21” bar, open from 11 a.m. - 2:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, serving lunch and dinner. The new bar features pool tables, dart boards, karaoke, live entertainment, big screen televisions, an internet juke box and Golden T Live (a video game Crystal admits being addicted to). Follow Rio’s Bar & Grill on Facebook to see all current specials! Rios’ owners say they are a bikerfriendly bar, and they invite bikers to join them on Wednesday Bike Night-Happy Hour from 7pm-2a.m. Crystal is pleased to introduce a Service Industry Night every Monday with Happy Hour all day long and free pool, too. So if you work in the service industry, come on by on Monday! Aside from the activities and Crystal’s signature
drinks, Rio’s has a simple yet delicious food menu. You’ll want to try their signature Rio burgers and tots, where you top off each with your choice of queso, Swiss, cheddar, bacon, barbeque sauce, mushrooms, brown gravy, sauteed onions, jalapenos, or chili. If you like, add them all! The best part about Rios is the relaxed, cozy atmosphere. It is decorated beautifully, with a custom built authentic, copper-top bar. Rio’s has a “Cheers” feel; they are a welcoming, friendly, neighborhood bar. Being local residents and with Crystal’s experience in bartending on the local bar scene, Rio’s opened with a great following. Just as customers keep up with Crystal, she keeps up with them and has established long term friendships along the way. Chuck and Crystal consider their customers as family. Drive on over to Rios, where everybody knows your name (or soon will!).

Panthers ready to Kick Off 2012 Season in new Region Pelham head coach Brett Burnett will lead his Panthers into 6A Region 4 this Fall, but just as the Panthers will lose some familiar, difficult foes, they’ll gain an equally challenging new slate. “It will be challenging, just like the last one,” said Burnett. “It’s a new challenge, but it’s a challenge just the same. Now, we’ll be in the same league as Prattville, the defending state champions. And we’re looking forward to it. We’ll have some new folks we haven’t played in the past - a very competitive league.” Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Thompson are the familiar
faces that will take the leap with the Panthers, joining Chelsea, Stanhope Elmore, Wetumpka and the aforementioned 2011 champions. The change will see some rivalries take a hiatus, as the Panthers will not face Hoover or Vestavia Hills in 2012. “They (Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Thompson) helped make up the region that’s been together as long as I’ve been around,” said Burnett. “Now they’ve broken it up and put that region into three separate ones. But that’s not something you can control, you’ve just got to play. We’re excited about it, and we’re excited
about getting started.” Pelham will start with some experience. Six offensive starters return, including one of two rotating quarterbacks, Tanner Adams. Fullbacks Eli Beall and Dalton Sparks will rotate into a generous offense that will allow multiple play makers to contribute. They’ll run behind an experienced line led by Josh Martin, Blane Eddins, Daniel Amandor and Garner Fish. A stout defense will be led by Chisom Morroco, Antonio London and Fletcher Johnson. Michael Boyd returns from injury for his senior season.
“They expect to go out and win every single game they play,” said Burnett. “This group just kind of expects that. We finished 5-5 last year, and we had a chance to make it to the playoffs. We couldn’t win that last game to put us in though, and it was a bit of a sour note. I think these guys are hungry to make a run at a championship.” The Panthers will ease into the new region and season with a jamboree on August 24 against Tuscaloosa County. Then things begin to count when the Panthers meet Paul Bryant the following week. See you there!

Carl Suggs
BARBER & STYLE SHOP 500A Hwy 52W Helena, Alabama
(205) 426-1911 Carl Suggs Barber & Style Shop moves just over the hill on Hwy 52W (from Bessemer to nearby Helena)
C
arl Suggs completely renovated the Pink & Blue Daycare building, located at 500 Highway 52W in Helena, to house his state-of-the-art barber and style shop as well. It now looks like a little strip center. Carl says he is happy to be in Helena now after his move from just over the hill on Morgan Rd. in Bessemer. Carl has 47 years of experience in the business, starting out at the old Brown’s Barber Shop in West End before opening his own barber shop in Midfield, where he operated for over 20 years before moving to the Morgan Road location. With his latest move to Helena (many of his current customers also call Helena and Pelham home), Carl brings six licensed, professional stylists and barbers. Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop is
known for their friendly, light-hearted atmosphere where clients can relax and enjoy a nostalgic experience, getting a great haircut while feeling the pull to join in the conversation. (Think a modern version of Floyd’s Barbershop on the Andy Griffith Show.) The new shop offers seven barber chairs, two 42-inch TVs, an activity room for kids, an array of magazines and of course, the main attraction, the nice folks providing all the latest hair cuts. Carl operates an incredibly versatile and skilled barber and style shop, specializing in all types of haircuts for men, women and children. Women can receive a shampoo, cut and style, and include layering if they desire. First time haircuts for children are of special significance, and the cutting crew at
Suggs will ease you through those sentimental first snips. They strive to make this milestone a happy, exciting moment for you and your child and present parents with a “First Haircut Certificate” when the deed is done. For teens, they offer the latest trendy styles and cuts, and the staff is trained to correct those do-it-yourself haircut mistakes we all (or our children) have made. Men can get a regular cut or something more specific such as a fade or flat top. Beard and mustache trims are free with a haircut. For those wanting to remove their facial hair, Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop provides old-fashioned straight razor shaves with hot towel services just like the old days. The shop serves walk-ins only (no appointments available or needed), and it
is open Tuesday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The shop’s parking is convenient and handicap accessible. For those home bound due to illness, Carl offers in-home visits. We are delighted that Carl Suggs made the decision to bring his business and love of community closer to us. The next time you’re having a “bad hair day,” or simply looking a “little shaggy” and need a cut or style, stop by Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop, and be sure to tell Carl and his staff they come highly-recommended by the folks at Pelham City News. With friendly service and satisfied customers as their top priorities, look for Carl Suggs Barber and Style Shop to quickly become a local favorite!

’12 Relay a Big Hit at Pelham High North Shelby County Relay for Life A Huge Success!
So far this year, North Shelby Relay for Life has raised over $83,841 in the fight against cancer, an all time high. (Fund raising does not end for this year until August 31st.) The top fund raising team was the Mighty Mites. Captain Elizabeth Turner, a student at Helena Intermediate School, and her team the raised $11,964! There were 424 registered rt countr y’s best yogu participants and 47 registered teams in this year’s event, two more all time highs! This year’s event had at least double the number of registered participants as last year’s, 305 Huntley Parkway with a crowd estimated at about 1,000 when you include bands, speakers, PHS cheerleaders and Pantherettes, etc., according to Bob Van Loan, one of the event organizers. There were eleven sponsors, the most ever. (Riverchase Kia was the title sponsor and Bama Fever was the Survivorship Sponsor.) Key committee members included: Amy Turner (Team Development), Amy Bolt (Luminaria), Jeff Bolt (Webmaster), Maurice Mercer (Community Outreach), Cindy Tolliver (Entertainment & Activities), Stacey McIntyre (Sponsorship), Cherri Hudson (Accounting & Registration), Calvin Stokesbary (Logistics) and Kylee Patrick (ACS Staff Partner). A highlight of the night was the flash mob that took place when Ashley Partridge sang “Dynamite.” Bob said he still gets chills when he remembers how virtually everyone in the stadium jumped in to dance, signifying how united everybody was in the fight against cancer. Thanks to everyone who participated in any way in this effort to remember those who have succumbed in their fight, encourage those currently in the fight, celebrate those who have won the fight and perhaps most importantly, to raise money in the ongoing war against cancer. Remember, this year’s drive goes through the end of August, so it’s not too late to give towards the effort. For more information on how you can give or become involved, Pelham residents may contact Maurice Mercer at mercermaurice@gmail.com.

The course is well maintained with a courteous staff and according to reviews on GolfReview, “this course is a stone cold bargain.” The Alabama Golf Association has joined the USGA’s GHIN(Golf Handicap and Information Network) Program.
The GHIN Program’s software effectively manages score posting; handicap index calculations; exceptional tournament score reduction; allows access to all course and slope ratings in the association-wide database; performs golfer handicap index and score inquiries; networks all golf club members on the GHIN service and much more. For android and iphone users, the GHIN® Mobile App is free and offers a personalized mobile experience allowing you to manage and follow your game with ease. Simply download it today at Google Play (formally the Android Market) or the iTunes store. The Oaks Golf Club is a user friendly, affordable alternative for area golfers to practice their game and spend a little time relaxing surrounded by beautiful scenery. The Oaks Head Golf Pro is Benny Smallwood, and he serves as the instructor for the club’s junior clinics.
Tee times should be reserved five days in advance beginning at 9 a.m. Senior and junior (ages 6-11) discounts are available. Foursomes are required to get tee times on weekends and holidays, 18-hole play only.
