My goal as an architect is to find in overlooked places the potential to create innovative solutions for complex contemporary issues. A horizontal, collaborative, multidisciplinary design process is, for me, the best way to create an honest architecture that can transform daily life and strengthen the relationship between individuals and the place they dwell. Topics such as urban landscape and public space, natural materials and sustainability, as well as the social role of architecture nowadays, are the main subjects I am interested in exploring and are the reason I am extremely passionate about my profession.

The location selected for the intervention, Morro do Indio-Campo Limpo, a challenging neighborhood in the outskirts of São Paulo, was chosen because of the possibility to establish there a long-required urban connection and, most important, due to the possibility of creating a public space that has the potential to positively affect the community’s well-being while enhancing the atmospheric richness that characterizes the place. My proposal was to create a series of architectural interventions that address not only these practical issues, but also commit to a new approach towards urban interventions, an approach that takes into account the identity of the place, the local landscape and existing social dynamics of the neighborhood. Through sensitive and coherent architectural interventions, the goal of the project was to design new spatial dynamics and pauses that reveal the beauty and diversity characteristic of this type of occupation (slums). These interventions would also give space to develop an architecture that embodies the natural passage of time and accepts transformation as part of its essence. This scenario would enrich and strengthen not only the social dynamics and identity of the community, but also stimulate their sensorial perception of space. The idea was similar to the act of polishing a rough diamond so as to reveal their true beauty. Through architecture we can demonstrate how a consistent, sensorial intervention based on a reflection about our perception and the very essence of our discipline is able to transform and intensify the relationship of individuals with the space they dwell.

This project is divided into two parts, the first one refers to the work developed in group during the course Vertical Studio: Free Time in the Campo Limpo, that occurred in the first half of the year 2015. The second part was developed individually in parallel to the Vertical Studio and amplified during the last semester of the same year as a final graduation project.

bend morro do indio - campo limpo february - december 2015

Like us, it arrives at the highest point of the territory. When you passing through this element, this fine reflective line formed by unbending angles, you can already see the serenity of being at home, the calmness of leaving behind the chaos of urban life, its speed and constant demand, for an internal silence, often forgotten. As you descend through rough solid steps, this fragile current takes you by the hand to a place where time is constant, protected from our will to control, or absence. Its temperature and its wet smell touch us as a whole, and the certainty of having reached its place arises with the same tranquility as its subtle flow. Its sensitive and resolute pathway recalls the lightness that exists in releasing for a moment the denial of the experience, oppressed by constant hours, and letting yourself be present. The whisper of the water calms our mind, and as it gradually abandons us, we finally see the beauty of the common, the beauty of simple being. 48

Rising through the uneven surface, nature reclaims these porous constructed surfaces that contain and tear the ground. This constant transformation through time modifies the view and reinforces the character of this silent architecture that never dies. This landmark in the landscape allows the recognition of a territory we call ours, but never see. These stones are shaped by the subtle movements of the ground, revealing us the powerful force under which all reality is submitted, perpetual weight. After the passage of the years, after suffering its own abandonment and its inevitable oblivion, that massive wall will remain there, mysteriously present, by itself.

anchor morro do indio - campo limpo february - december 2015

When we reconnect and sincerely perceive the countless natural elements that surround us, which are always present but not seen, it is on the earth element we see ourselves. In this pulsating place, what reigns is the simplicity and pure beauty of this material, which though transformed by human hands, reveals itself in its most honest and faithful essence. Not only time imprints its passage on these surfaces, but also our movements, our hands and feet, our bodies, sculpt the space through experience. In this vibrant atmosphere we leave our inner side to feel what really transforms us: relationships. It is on places like this that we see ourselves reflected in others, where we experience change and find our social identity. This subtle, primitive space does not deny us, but it welcomes us in the most sincere way, allowing us to understand ourselves as part of it, as its reason to be.

During my internship at Taller de Arquitectura - Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo (MÊxico), I worked with the architecture team responsible for the development of the Four Seasons Hotel Resort located at Tamarindo Beach, Mexico. This project was done in collaboration with another internationally recognized architecture firm: Legorreta +Legorreta. Even though I was part of the Taller team, the exchange of experiences and the dialogue between both firms had a very positive impact in my personal and professional experience. As an intern, I assisted Luis Guagnelli and Elizabeth Waites with the projects for the Family and Kids Pools and the Spa area. Both projects proposed an architecture that is completely integrated with the natural landscape (Mexican tropical forest) and explores to the maximum the sensorial experience of the visitor. My experience at Taller couldn’t have been more satisfying. I was able fulfill my responsibilities successfully, to develop new skills and my fellow co-workers really made me feel as part of their team.

Known for its strong transformative power within São Paulo’s social and cultural scene, the SESC Mooca project starts from the idea of fragmenting its complex multipurpose program (sports, health, leisure, social and cultural activities) into independent buildings that connect through a continuous outdoor pool. Such configuration generates both free-access urban scale spaces, with a strong public character, as well as places where the individual, in a more intimate scale, connects with each building differently, thus marking the diverse areas of the extensive program. Each monolithic volume that incisively marks the project’s limits, while maintaining a sober uniform architectural language, stands out for its unique, strong cutouts in the facades that reveal remarkable viewpoints in the urban surrounding, creating new perspectives and relations to the program and the city landscape. The connectivity, both visual and physical, of these new elements with the pre-existing historical buildings and its environment, define the design proposal and its atmosphere, establishing a new public open space of quality for its visitor and the city.

With the destruction of Port-au-Prince Cathedral after the 2010 earthquake that devastated the country, the citizens of Haiti’s capital have lost their main meeting point. Important not only for religious reasons, the Cathedral was the key public space for community meetings. The place sheltered cultural and social activities both inside the building as well as on the Public Square where it was located. After talking with the community members and discussing with them which elements of their memory of the Cathedral should be rescued, it became clear that their biggest concern was precisely the need to reestablish not the building itself but the lost scenario of their social life. It was of great importance for the development of this project to gain a deeper understanding of how religious rituals were celebrated, taking into account the syncretism that characterizes the Haitian popular culture. This project envisions a new Cathedral designed for the city and its dwellers. An architecture that not only focuses on expanding the spiritual experience of the citizens of Port-au-Prince but also participates actively on the their social and cultural daily life.
