As designers, we challenge ourselves beyond guidelines and dare to start new trends, always adding some fun and twists to design, as well as awakening the senses.
– The pop culture: which is what we live by now, today. using images of popular as opposed to elitist culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture. A splash of pop always adds color, humor and fun to any space; making it bold, individual and personal, and therefore extremely unique.
My main goal and inspiration in all my projects
Mixing and playing around with the elements above you can come up with a modern, cosy and yet fun and extremely unique and personal atmosphere that can evolve with time as you use it, add or reduce from it.
or e
– The futuristic and innovative: exploring new technologies to push boundaries and shapes we can introduce and accomplish.

When starting any project, the clients should be heard, and guided to express their thoughts, expectations and perceptions visually. In the process, the designer’s job is to bond with the client, and get to dive into their personalities to push them to get out of their comfort zones in terms of experimenting with them to come up with a finished product that is essentially a reflection of themselves; opposed to what is trendy, normal, or a reproduction of something already familiar to them.
– The vintage: reminiscing the past. A wonderfully, beautiful era to recreate in your home. it is about 1940's glamor and the end of World War II. It is extremely nostalgic and looks to an elegant time in history for influences. I find most people relate to this style and types of spaces when looking to decorate their homes, as it is elegant, warm and takes them back in time.
in an industrial sense; such as: galvanized steel, concrete floors, metal, exposed beams and unfinished surfaces to create a distinctly modern, bohemian look. In more upscale urban interiors, we aim for a far more polished look, with bespoke fixtures, sophisticated finishes and open floor plans that allow for multifunctional rooms. Diversity and cultural mix co-existence have brought us to love the city life and the flexibility for every changing functionality it demands. We adore items that scream metropolis living.
Life is short and sometimes we tend to forget to enjoy every second of our precious lives. If I have one advice to give people when designing or redesigning their spaces, it would be to live you dream, make it your own and make the world a better place; and always remember: “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” – Quote by: William Arthur Ward.

At Vick Vanlian, when designing, we utilize and play on the senses wherever possible: Touch, Smell, Sight, and Sound, as they are all parts of experiencing any space, be it interiors or architecture, and bringing individuality, beauty & harmony to every project/space; any attractive atmosphere makes us think how and why things are made.
is to capture the different instances in life, and create different emotional bonds to awaken and provoke the senses. This is achieved by mixing and playing with the following:

Good design should communicate; weather by conveying a message, or by provoking emotions. It should be a statement to be perceived to create a lasting impression through the individual’s perception.
– The urban: adding nontraditional home materials and design features traditionally used

PREFACE 2 My earliest childhood memories are of drawing and trying to create something magical with pencil and paper. Those of us who choose to pursue professional interior design are responsible for taking a client's space and transforming it into the dream they describe‌that kind of change is so exciting to see! So, how is this achieved?
My specialty is helping people who love something about traditional style, but want to approach it in a fresh, modern way. My strongest visual influence is the natural world,
or e
and that harkens back to my earlier work as a ceramic artist. It's difficult to find a manmade motif or texture which is any more beautiful than those we find nature. I love elegant, accessible, luminous design. The idea of bringing modern and natural elements into a traditional space is a cornerstone of my approach. Every day is something new.
st
I hope you will find inspiration and direction from the pages of this book, which showcase the talent of incredible designers from all over the world. As you look at each space, remember that the whole is the sum of its parts! Each detail is worth its weight.

to deliver the look they are expecting. Then, we discuss their lifestyle and how they hope to live in the space. Do they like to entertain, or prefer quiet family time? Do we need to create spaces especially designed for children and young families, or will this be a more formal residence? Unlike commercial design, when you're working in a client's residence, the emphasis is on the small elements that will make for a comfortable, nurturing daily life. Considerations are more personal and more nuanced in someone's home than in a restaurant or hotel.

Each designer in this book understands that it's critical to have a strong intuition for what people really mean when they're telling you what they want. We need to have a good sense of design, but a great sense of how to take care of people. A luxurious space is one which translates a visual dream into a physical reality. If the vision for a rich, cozy space, does that mean leather, brass and velvet? Or heavy linen and natural wood? If the idea is to create a light, bright space, will that mean an all-white space with lots of glass? Or bright colors and plenty of sunshine? Interpreting the meaning of a client's direction is a critical element in delivering what he or she is expecting. I begin each project by doing a design study with the client, pouring over images of other spaces they admire, which helps me

How to help a young couple who loved the traditional bones of their new home, but wanted a decisive shift in its decor and vibe to modern luxe? Opening the kitchen into the family room and reworking the architecture of the space was the solution to creating the fresh feeling we were after. The house had an interior that was an odd mix of styles, genres, and materials, so the designers began by pulling down the 2-story walls of oak paneling, replacing the heavy fireplace, overhauling the kitchen and master bath, while cleaning up the complicated architectural details throughout. The foyer was originally cluttered by unecessary columns and included an odd circular opening to the floor above. The designers streamlined
behind the fireplace, so that the room remains uncluttered. Creating a bar between the kitchen and family room also contributed to the space feeling more conducive for entertaining, while allowing light through an opening wrapped in mosaic tile. The formal living room was recast as a bronzy, sultry lounge for cactching up over cocktails after work and listening to music rather than more the formal visits generally associated with a proper living room. Across the hall is the dining room, which was wrapped in icy blues drawn from the snowy owl painting. During visits by the family members, a beautiful and comfortable space for long lingering meals together was an important requirement, so this room was a design

focus. Still, the directive was that the furnishings and materials be highly functional, free from worry about red wine spills or furry family friends napping on sofas. The designers delivered by covering upholstery
For the family room, the designers designed a simple, contemporary gas fireplace to replace the existing heavy stone version, and developed a smooth plaster 2-story mantle to replace the outdated oak paneling. A/V components are carefully hidden in recessed panels
in sumptuous “velvet usually for outdoor use, wool rugs that can be washed, and leathers which are expected to age over time, which is simple, beautiful, and functional.

ay Jeffers’ Chic Transformation in Pacific Heights, San Francisco is one of the designers’ favorite projects. One of the goals of the project was to create a space that reflected the young homeowners’ fun, energetic personalities, and also prepare for their expanding family. Before the renovation and redesign, the home had great bones but no architectural importance. Jeffers Design Group added a new fireplace, built-in shelving in the living room, and transformed a plain office into a vintage inspired library. The library features floor to ceiling bookcases with full with a bourbon bar, relaxed seating and incredible lights. The owners and their friends often gravitate to this unique space when hosting parties because of the unique aspects and distinctly cool vibe.

his gracious home, designed and built in the late 20th century by a distinguished local architect, was ready for an update. At the time of the home’s original design during the 1990’s, the clients loved a very traditional Southern American style, but time and interest had changed their taste. With a growing family, the needs for using the interior spaces were changing as well. The designers hoped to preserve some of the classic traditional charm, while bringing the house (full of sports-loving kids, friends, dogs, and grandparents living next door) current with the way they live today. They delivered, through fool-proof resilient materials and a space plan which incorporated elegance with sensibility and fun.

First, how to best use the formal living room? Most of the couple’s entertaining is centered around sports, either in hosting a basketball team dinnner after their daughter’s game, or filling the house with friends for watching football and eating a casual dinner together. That left the small living room empty and ignored. Although using the room as a home office was discussed, most of the work from home was done on a laptop computer! So, it was decided that the new space would be beautiful, with initmate lighting, and 4 deeply comortable chairs for my client and her closest friends to have a glass of wine together after the kids were in bed. This is now reported to be her favorite room in the house! The family room, which opens onto a large kitchen and casual dining area, is where much of the family’s time is spent. The space was ample, but a poor furniture plan meant that there was often not enough seating to accommodate their guests. The designers extended the seating area by widening the grouping with a pair of chairs and large ottoman, and also investing in a larger rug to help achieve the perception of a more spacious room. For the bedrooms, the goal was to create luxurious comfort through bedding with volume and cozy spots for reading or relaxing in beautiful light.

This is a second home for a couple who had their heart set on a home in Napa, where classical east coast traditional meets west coast and by a fluke, wound up playing golf in Arizona, falling in love with the state so much that they purchased a home where they wanted to implement their interior design desires. Jamie Herzlinger Interiors gutted the house down to the original studs as Jamie Herzlinger was the architect, contractor as well as the interior designer, so Jamie was able to really develop the client’s vision. The owners enjoy a modern aesthetic to their everyday life and chasing trends was not part of the design vernacular. Calcutta marble was used throughout the house including master bathroom as well as kitchen counters. The master bathroom is a great example of a classical approach
90
to white cabinetry. The home office is where Jamie took the mixture of hip modern with traditional and classical elements. Elitis wallpaper in a micro mosaic is a classical approach to decoupage and a perfect example of a classical iconic Lafont desk to accompany it. The powder room is one of Jamie’s favorite patterns from Artistic Tile which use classical materials in a controlled yet organic nature. The wallpaper from Studio E and of course BOYD’s ode to deco. For Jamie, the dining room is an example of stunning. Jamie’s love of Gracie wallpaper is classic together with a Bergamo damask in that great orange was a combination not to be beat.

asked with updating an older home for her own family, Shirley Meisels of Mhouse, Inc. transformed this 100-year-old Edwardian classic using bright white paint and splashes of colour. This contemporary family residence shines, while remaining comfortable and functional for Ms. Meisels’ own busy family of five.

Located in the Regal Heights neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, this modern masterpiece dazzles with an eclectic, mid-century modern aesthetic. Ms. Meisels has been an avid collector of vintage mid-century pieces throughout her career and her curated pieces combined with high-end and low-end details allow this residence to pay tribute to its historical roots while remaining contemporary and fresh. The Master Bedroom occupies the third floor of the home and offers a perfect getaway for this busy couple. A gorgeous accent wall is accomplished through custom wallpaper that makes a bold statement against the soft linens. The headboard is upholstered with silk linen. The mirrored night tables minimize their presence and the mixed materials help create a striking Scandinavian-style layout in this generously-sized retreat. The fabrics are as luxurious as the rest of the home and the furnishings offer a place to retire for relaxation. By removing the upper cabinetry in the kitchen, the space opens up to a greatroom that functions as the centerpiece of the home. Combining the kitchen, dining and eating area into one allows the family to be together whether working at the breakfast bar, reading in the chair or doing homework at the table.

dream became reality for one retired couple that relocated from New York to indulge in a life of luxury in Hollywood, FL. This house has an impressive mix of all the right elements, including modern design, architecture and energy. With mesmerizing ocean and park views, and about 650 m 2 of living space, this palatial penthouse was impossible to pass up. This architectural element not only allows natural light to radiate throughout the home but it also offers unparalleled views of the Hollywood's skyline and beach which easily takes center stage in this home.

The couple turned to acclaimed interior design firm, Pepe Calderin Design. Pepe Calderin along with designer Juliana Diaz-Salazar begin what transpired into a two-year renovation. Going from a traditional home to a modern home requires a sense of style and skill – Pepe Calderin Design was definitely up to the task. “They wanted a contemporary transitional look, different from their previous traditional home,” Calderin says. A soft color palette of whites, grays and taupe are partnered with shiny metals that all come

color palette. With an aura that demonstrates the true meaning of elegance, the living room is architecturally designed to show off the magnificent ocean views with towering 6.1-m floor-to-ceiling windows that are dressed in sheer gray linen panels. They selected a template of soft tones and fabrics in effort to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Resting upon the white marble flooring lies a marbleized pattern area rug from Gershon Carpet in shades of gray and black. “It was a last minute decision that was based on the room’s furnishings,” Salazar says. Having a contemporary personality, the customdesigned silver velvet tufted sofa is luminous, while the opposing purple velvet chairs pull warmth into the room. A glass and chrome cocktail table creates a sense of transparency – showing off the details in the rug. “We didn’t want to take away from the sofa which was the room’s main focus,” Calderin and Salazar say.

This open space apartment consists of large relaxing areas combining living-room with fireplace, kitchen, bar, sports area, 2 guest rooms with en-suite bathroom fully equipped with walk-in closets. The apartment has stunning glazed area: a multifunctional living room converted into a social area (a cinema, bar and sports zone) with an attractive terrace with sofas and superb winter garden behind it. The design is set on the comfortable lush interiors with warm, rich colours; and based on clean, clear shaped system with rational use of space and harmony of proportions. The aim was to present interior that is solid, versatile, intriguing and multifunctional. The designer used contrasting techniques that both hold together the whole interior and make it dynamic (It flows, plays and sets the drive). The beautiful and luxurious finishes were designed as pieces of furniture produced by leading manufacturers in Italy (Baxter, Malerba), America (Ralpf Laurent) and England (Andrew Martin), pearl lamps by Verner Panton. The apartment’s style resembles modern understanding of luxury. The design is based on clear system with rational use of space and harmony of proportions with added warm, saturated colours. The luxurious materials such as American walnut and polished ebony, natural stone, marble Nero Portoro and onyx, leather panels on the walls and furniture were used to create this interior. The selected materials and furniture emphasize the masculine character of the interior, and intelligently placed accents and decorative accessories add to it warmth and convenience.

The new owners wanted a clean, modern canvas that would showcase their art collection, so Jeffers Design Group collaborated with Sutro Architects and Black Mountain Construction to bring the space back to the studs, and opened it up by removing all of the interior walls. Against a canvas of greys and whites, the bold, sculptural forms of the furnishings pop, giving the space a real wow factor.

his contemporary home is located in a small, prestigious property development cluster in Sandhurst, Johannesburg an area with a genteel, leafy calm about it but also provides easy access to much of the vibrant city. The brief was to express an individual ambient character but maintain a calm and uncluttered elegance. Every vase, sculpture, artwork and furniture object is given enough meditative space to allow it to be seen and appreciated. The interiors contain solid forms, softened with geometric shapes which highlight the owner’s collection of local South African art.

The home also had to speak to the client’s love of art and fine entertaining. This five bedroomed house was designed to be a multi-functional home for family, friends and executive guests. On the ground floor, there is a formal lounge, double volume entertainment bar, cinema, double volume study and office, an informal family TV lounge with open plan kitchen, a formal dining area and a large reception area. All the ground floor spaces open to extensive outdoor garden space with pool and pool deck
personal space. The master bedroom is a true haven and allows for an escape within the bustling city center. It has extensive “his and hers” dressing area, plus a steam shower sauna, bath and shower. The client has an extensive European-based art collection and was eager to acquire contemporary South African works from both up and coming and established local artists, allowing for an African residence with an African collection, hence all artworks were new acquisitions put forward by the
with tonal differences, allowing the artwork to have maximum impact. The colour palette was a guiding factor for the design and décor. The darker hues of the exterior surfaces are in stark contrast to the light filled and fresh interior, the designer wanted a transition, a mood shift, a different experience from outside to in. The grey wall on the upstairs mezzanine area is a heavily textured, crystallite surface that brings a raw, brute finish to the interior, bringing the outside in and helps delineate

his stylish, colorful Central Park West apartment is the result of a whimsical dialogue between art and design. With the direction to design something “different” for its young owners, D’Aquino Monaco set out to push the envelope and transform the classic bones of the apartment into an irreverent, yet playful, space. Accompanying the 20th-century Italian and French antiques that harmonize with sculptural modern art, the designer chose to emphasize color and art to draw visitors on a journey through the apartment.

In the foyer, as an introduction to the rest of the apartment, the designer focused on reinvigorating the moldings. To establish a sculptural identity for the entrance and remove all traces of the original prewar classical crown molding, new moldings were designed to be pixelated and geometric to catch the light and make a statement. To set the tone for the apartment, the designer made a statement in the living room with dynamic color and a dialogue between the eclectic pieces that were meticulously selected for their style, essence and humor. A Lucite sculpture of a head by Jim Shaw was transformed into a coffee table with the artist’s permission. The color palette for the living room area rug of silk and wool by Tai Ping Carpets reverses when moving into the Library, where
the neutrals on the floor contrast the vibrant red wall color. To accompany the sculptural table, Italian chandelier and modern Danish shelving system, the designer worked again with Tai Ping to design the faux stone rug to incorporate nature in a subtle and soft way. The designer “love for all things in the 1940’s, particularly Italian” is expressed in the extensive use of Fornasetti wallpaper lining the kitchen, breakfast room and laundry. With the introduction of green, the baby’s room gives a nod to the surrounding Central Park. A soft shag over a wall-to-wall rug creates a soft and playful space.

he client wanted a cool urban clean fresh space – something to reflect her stylish and fun personality, but at the same time a cozy home right in the center of London where she can relax with her dog after a day of shopping or from work. Yet, it needed to be a space, which would be a perfect entertaining space. The designers completely stripped the whole apartment back to a shell, designed and built a new kitchen, bathrooms, a walk in wardrobe, wet room and laundry space. The flat was rewired. The designers installed a seamless resin floor throughout, inclusive of thermal subfloor instead of existing radiators. The space is full of quiet and warm feeling.

Wide open spaces with an audacious combination of color, good lighting, accessories and furniture, properly placed, provide a comfortable, balanced and joyful space where the classical style merges with the dynamism of today. By combining a traditional style that was reflected in the architectural project with the vitality and freshness of a young family with young children, the pattern of the design consisted of integrating these two features to transform each space into a great
which defined the personality of the project, each area has a color that highlights the chosen elements and provides a perfect combination of space, light and furniture. The living room is perceived like a modern, graceful and harmonious place where the conservative space contrasts with the dynamism and versatility of the decorative elements. The family room and breakfast bock together make up a large and bright space where old items were combined with modern looking items in order to give the place a particular personality. his “Marina” style residence is perfectly located across from the glistening waters of the Bay and neighbor to the Palace of Fine Arts. Many of the home characteristics, like the low-pitched red clay roof, iron gates, and arched windows and doors, show signs of the revival that swept through San Francisco in the early 1900’s. The new homeowner’s were drawn to the interior’s timeless beauty and distinction but didn’t like the formality or air of pretentiousness that can be associated with that particular style of home. They turned to Artistic Designs for Living (ADL) and Tineke Triggs to come up with a design that would maintain the classic beauty and refinement of the home but reflect the casual, laid-back style of the homeowners. 215

In signature ADL fashion, you will see “pops” of unexpected color and use of everyday objects in unordinary way. Tineke used monochromatic neutrals and layering of textures, and combined classic sensibility with unstructured, modest texiles, in order to keep with the classic, ageless look. The neutral color of the walls provided the perfect backdrop to showcase the homeowner’s collection of art pieces representing their love of travel. By bringing in cool tones and soft fabrics, the palette was lightened up, providing a laid back vibe that is comfortable and mimics the family’s personal style.

he serene atmosphere of materials like wood and leather give a peaceful feeling of coming home. This big living is dominated by a stairway like we know from castles. As a soft tapestry in wood it unfolds itself into the room. In the kitchen, a splendid bar in rock crystal becomes a splendid eye catcher as it is lighted. In the living room, Kolenik designed a special fire that seems to float and which decides the room in a very natural way. The bending walls high above the stairs split up in two symmetrical parts. The wooden steps make a very good contrast with the dark tiled floor in leather look. That makes a natural link with the rich leather furniture that invites to sit down. The fireplace finished by Dofine in a crusted finish seems to float. It breaks the space with a look through from a cozy second sofa. 225

With a long experience in design of professional kitchens, Robert Kolenik knew exactly how the cooking area could be practical and beautiful, with most garments behind wooden in brush painted nut. There, the beautiful lighted bar in smoked pebbles offers the intimacy of a pub without an association with cooking. The newest appliances of Miele, an icecrusher, a wine storage and all the luxury to feel guest in your own house. In the cellar, this estate did get a second bar where visitors can get a drink in privacy. Taking the beautiful stairs brings us to the master bedroom and bathroom with the stunning make-up table. The cupboard and the toilet are well integrated by eucaluptus wood. The door handles in leather underline the soft feeling of the room and of the whole surrounding.

ailor’s Space is an environment that shows the culture and the lifestyle of a resident of Itajai, a peculiar city in Santa Catarina, Brazil, that has a mild winter and a rigorous summer. The proposal is a loft for a person who likes nature, trips, water sports, gastronomy and music. All this is shown through pieces of Brazilian designers, textures and shapes that evoke nature and fishing, as the designers' Bone Bank Rafic Farah and Otavio Coelho and the Chaise Sereia designed by Paulo Alves, both handmade with naval technology, or the Chair Chevelle, designed by Jack and Sergio Farher, made of wood using techniques of musical pieces, or the armchair Shell from Estudiobola that has references of marine shells in his drawings. 237

The 112 m 2 space is divided into Home office, Home theater, 5-m-high ceiling fireplace and gourmet space with low ceiling or cosiness. Sober tones, with a predominance of blue, lead to Portuguese mosaic of Azorean culture and nautical blue, the porcelain named Armani fendi tone, tile with Brown veins joins the walls lined with wallpaper Italian imitating Cork with silver foil, to remember the nature, as well as the Home theater of travertine marble backlit, and the Home office desk of tree trunk made with nature's waste and a root used as sculpture in the middle of center tables. The curtains have tricot shawls similar to the design of a fishnet and a mirrored 5-m-high Panel with a wooden sculpture based on a windrose, used in navigation.

hislaine Viñas Interior Design was so pleased to be a part of this incredible project for their previous clients. The four-storey penthouse of this 1895 skyscraper (one of the earliest remaining structures in New York City) was never used as a residence, only serving as the crowning jewel to the building. When purchased by the owners, it was a completely raw space, having only its original steel structure and strangely configured partial floors. David Hotson was brought in to take this massive renovation on as architect, and transformed it into an adult playground complete with a 80-m stainless steel slide, intersecting vistas from glass walkways, and a climbing “wall” off one of the original columns. 245

his project is a rear addition to a one-bedroom house. Built on a lot narrower than the typical San Francisco 7.6-m parcel, this infill project comprises three stories that overlook a downward sloping garden and frame panoramas of the Bay to the north. Unlike the existing residence, the addition is not visible from the street; instead, it forms the primary faรงade of the new house.

At the ground level, the existing garage opens onto a studio that opens onto the garden beyond. Connected by a spiral staircase in the studio, the second level comprises an existing street-facing parlor and previously windowless bedroom, which now opens onto a multi-use space for painting and yoga. The existing kitchen and dining room on the third floor open onto a live/work space that also doubles as a space in which to entertain. As one ascends, the view of the Bay becomes progressively
to cater to everyday functions. Existing areas were kept in the Edwardian Arts and Crafts style in deference to two generations of artists who lived in the house prior to the current owners. The top floor of the addition serves as a live/work space with an architect’s workspace adjacent to the living space. The floor below is a room for painting and yoga. The bottom floor is a studio for the production of architectural tree models. This project symbolizes architecture of linearity and

Similarly, the addition to this one-bedroom house overlooking the Bay designed for two artists

ocated in the city of Sao Paulo, this house of 600 m2 was designed for a family with the goal of being a place to live, entertain friends and collecting art and design. The furniture features a mixture of pieces of vintage furniture, antiques, furniture Italian, French and Scandinavian design. Each environment is determined by furniture bright colors like red in the gourmet kitchen, orange in the dining room and blue in the living room. The house was designed with large windows and doors that allows the daylight to be present in all environments. The doors, windows and wide passages with the intention to reduce the boundaries and integrate the internal and external spaces, create a vertical garden with tropical plants in the dining room. Living in a grand mirror over the fireplace reflects the views of the gardens expanding the sense of oasis. It was chosen for the coatings of natural materials like wood floors demolition in the area of intimate rooms and trainee in the social area; the walls clear surfaces as white or neutral as cement were thought to receive a collection of important Brazilian artists. 271

ick Vanlian holds this innovative project in very high esteem due to the collaborative process and friendship that sprung from working with the client. The home’s décor and design are described by Vanian as “very strong, mixed with the soft elegance of the furniture selection, which is the perfect reflection of the home’s owner, as well as a balance of classic sleek contemporary design with bold three dimensional shapes.”

The client was extremely involved in the project from the start
and in every aspect possible, which culminated in a home that is “innovative, time honored, luxurious, geometric and
absolutely stunning” and a true reflection of its undoubtedly proud owner.
One of the primary inspiration for this project is considered to
be lines. Lines were created and repeated in a way inspired by the lines found in a diamond pattern, using it in many of the details. These lines can be found in the tiling layout, the dinner table’s structure and selected coffee tables and door handles.
Lines also extend vertically to create sculptural threedimentional walls that dominate the center volume of the
space, concealing the kitchen and creating a dynamic
contrast with the classical treatment of the rest of the walls in the apartment.
A Busnelli sofa makes a crucial focal point as it drives home the evolution of the dwelling’s classic/modern interpretation.
Two Futuro armchairs, from the Beyond collection by Vick Vanlian, are then added to push the boundaries of design and dare to experiment with mix of styles, colors and textures to produce the unique vision and style that is Vick. One of the most intriguing design features in the house is the clandestine television in a hidden closet. Vick believes that the television would occupy too much space in the main living area and interrupt the space’s formal atmosphere. So rather than allowing it to interrupt the flow, the television was tucked away from sight with the help of an ingenious innovation.

he rooms in this home of mid-century Georgian-style pulsate with color and contemporary art and furniture. Combining contemporary furnishings and art with a traditional style, the home is deftly managed by the interior designer, Mary Anne Smiley, of Dallas, Texas, using subtle techniques and elements of design with great skill. To give this basic traditional home an airy contemporary feeling, all walls and wood moldings were painted pure white. Skillful selections of soft contemporary furnishings of proper scale to fit the space were added to create inviting upscale living spaces appropriate to the family’s entertaining life style. Subtle use of contrasting textures and finishes such as silver leather shag rug, deep rich wood, shiny chrome, rough bronze table base, nubby silk, sleek leather, art glass table top, and ultra-suede accent pillows, create an understated sophistication.

Known for her bold use of color, Mary Anne says, “The way to get color right is to start without it. I love this approach, as it gives me a blank canvas to use color as I want on everything else and creates a lovely platform for those colors to zing! Though I am known for my fearless use of color, what people often miss is that I rarely use strong or bright color on walls. The color usually comes in small doses in finish materials and furnishings so that the colors can be used in their most intense and vibrant hues. A little bit of pure red, turquoise, or shocking pink, can be exciting, while a lot can be overwhelming and uncomfortable. Thus, neutral backgrounds are essential to add balance.

he charm of this new home is its elegance and peacefulness. Art, color palette, and furnishings contribute to the success. Swedish influence blends washed colors of milky gold and pale grey giving the feel of refined sophistication with an aged appearance. The light colors are an important part of the Swedish culture that has little sunlight on a daily basis. It boasts luxurious linens in blues and creams with a minimal contrast of grey washed pine floors. Original artwork from local artists shows the homeowner’s love of art and cultural events. A baby grand piano allows for jazz or classical music to liven up any party. The furniture exhibits a mix of straight lines and gentle curves with painted furniture being a key element bringing added lightness. 305

striking layout in this modest sized retreat. The fabrics are as luxurious as the rest of the home and the furnishings offer a place to retire to for relaxation.
The focal point of this home is the beautiful gourmet kitchen, which functions as the center of activity. The large island with honed marble countertops, custom-designed cabinetry, chef’s appliances, and built-ins offer plenty of storage and pack great style making cooking a pleasure and entertaining a breeze! It’s open space combines the kitchen, keeping room, and breakfast room allowing today’s family to welcome their guests while preparing for an evening of entertaining. The lighting was an integral aspect of the design. A mixture of sconces, chandeliers, picture lights, downlights, and pendants layer the lighting and bring it to a more personal and comforting scale, bringing the different colors and textures to
the forefront. The natural fabrics such as linens and cottons, painted woods, marble, and brick all get attention when the lighting grazes them. The colors are simple throughout and reflect a European palette, with a contrast of charcoal in the living/ music room and dining room for a dramatic experience. The end walls of this more formal space are draped in sheer charcoal linen for softness and an artistic effect. The room doubles as an art gallery and gives a small clue into the

uilding a new home that blends successfully with an established historic neighborhood requires special sensitivity to scale and detail. Because the house is located in the city’s historic Garden Hills District, the owners chose to build a home in keeping with the English style homes that were popular in their neighborhood during the 1920’s.

Details from 16th-century English manor homes were the inspiration. From the exterior, a hand-carved limestone bay window, Flemish bond brickwork and a heavy slate roof are authentic to the period, as are the diamond paned leaded glass windows and the wrought iron strap hinges at the timbered front door. At the back of the house, a covered rear porch, a pool with flagstone terrace, a pool house, a children’s play area and a koi pond provide areas for outdoor dining and recreation.

a lighter, more transitional aesthetic aimed at comfortable family living. The design concept was, to take the traditional
artwork. It looks formal, but is really not. The client’s desire was for a clean, uncluttered space aimed at sophistication and elegance, but equally intent on creating an entertaining, workable space that would stand up to a growing family. An understated palette was used, incorporating colors of rich vanilla, soft blue greens and greys with warm walnut floors. The sparkle of marble and soapstone in the kitchen captures the light in the space, while the limestone adds texture. We aimed to maximize the outdoor views with furniture layout, and to reinforce the architecture of this new home. In the dining room, the juxtaposition of the traditional historically inspired Zuber wallcovering and formal antique crystal chandelier, paired with the clean and crisp drapery and chair fabrics and more modern rug, make the dining
room feel current and not stuffy. In the kitchen, a custom table that is an extension of the island creates a moveable work space or impromptu dining area. Maximum storage was incorporated into a pantry that was originally designed to be a separate room, but was integrated into an extension of the kitchen. Designing a historically inspired house that offers the livability of a modern day home can be challenging. This home achieves that balance with style and grace.

ow can darkness be so radiant? There is something about Mark Rothko’s work that has always attracted Sandra Nunnerley to it. Nunnerley says, “I’m not sure where I first saw his paintings, probably on slides in an art history course at university. But nothing prepares you for the experience of actually standing in front of one. The paint takes over the space, and the blocks of color become almost palpable as they float before your eyes.” In this Park Avenue apartment, Nunnerley wanted to create a similar kind of subtlety and strength. Nunnerley thought about do something with the finishes on the walls so they would have a kind of shimmer. But first there were some major problems with the layout that had to be solved. The apartment was designed for a lifestyle that no long exists, with a rabbit warren of little rooms in back that only the servants were meant to see. But those servants are long gone, and no one in New York can afford to waste even a foot of space. So the architects Ferguson & Shamamian worked with Nunnerley to reconfigure the floor plan to function more efficiently for a young and active family. A big kitchen and family room in back was created, where the family could cook and relax there. The apartment was full of bright light and good views. The challenge was to make all of the rooms usable and livable. The furnishings throughout the apartment are an intriguing mix – everything from Louis XV to Biedermeir to 1970’s Italian. And then there are the custom pieces, such as that black-lacquer TV cabinet meticulously crafted in the Art Deco style. These pieces would be taken as the antiques of the future. Decorating to Sandra Nunnerley is not about the latest trend. She believes that it requires a major investment, and is constantly aware of the commitment involved. “You want to create something that expresses your clients’ interests and feels utterly right at the moment. Yet, it also has to have a certain timeless quality, because people are not likely to change their décor from season to season as they would their clothes.”

In every room, there are bespoke custom furnishings designed specifically for this apartment and the client’s family life. The blue and white palette unifies the space while offering a stimulating contrast of light and dark. A blue and white color scheme is actually very diverse as the range of blues is endless. The shifting shades of different blues creates continuity and interest. The antique Blue and white Chinese porcelain are perfect accessories. In the main living area, the deep and comfortable seating provides a welcome retreat. The custom silk rug design is echoed in the hand
oversized contemporary painting dramatically captures attention and is flanked by fantastic shagreen floor lamps. The leather ottoman provides a nice leg rest. Overall, the room with the rich and cozy fabrics is warm and inviting. The bedroom is an oasis with a private seating area to relax after a busy city day. The original fireplace is framed by beautifully applied moldings and trim. The dining room walls are upholstered in a deep blue stried velvet fabric. The custom dining chairs are covered in a sumptuous ivory leather. Again, another custom silk carpet grounds the space. The gorgeous table and sideboard are 19th-century French antiques. The artwork is a sensational 18th century Japanese screen. The library is stunning with walls paneled in mahogany and leather. The

he design scheme of this open concept condo is a contemporary take on Art Deco, emphasized by the play of soft curves and clean lines. The sophisticated palette of warm grey and cream creates a cohesive look throughout the space. Used in paint, fabrics, wallpaper and cabinetry, the mixture of texture, pattern and materials bring the neutral palette to life. Bright yellow accents in bold patterns add a fun, playful vibe that keeps the space feeling fresh for the young homeowners.

The living room, dining room and kitchen were each given their own distinctive features to create the feeling of separate rooms within the large open floor plan. Lush silk drapery extends throughout the condo, tying one area to the next. In the living room, Asian-inspired chrome coffee tables mimic the curves of the custom sofa and chairs. Upholstered in champagne velvet and cream herringbone chenille, the seating strikes an artfully balance between luxury and comfort. Tiered walnut side tables topped with chrome Art Deco lamps anchor the space. A contemporary teardrop chandelier adds to the glamour, while the accessories and stacks of books balance it with a casual, lived-in feel. A custom writing desk built into the backside of the island separates the living area from the kitchen. This allows the family to use the computer

linear pendants hang over the work surface to provide suitable lighting without competing with the condo’s showpiece – the dining room chandelier. The oversized polished nickel chandelier is not only the focal point of the dining room, but the signature piece of the condo. Its simple shape, dramatic scale and reflective surface draw immediate attention. The dining room is set apart from the kitchen with an elegant feature wall clad in silvery-grey wallpaper. The dining table, with its semi-circular base, is another nod to Art Deco style. With elegant fabrics, custom furniture, pops of colour and sparkling metals, this condo perfectly reflects the homeowners’ style – sophisticated, cool and glamour.

estled in the ever-desirable neighborhood of Myer’s Park, Charlotte North Carolina, this house was purchased by a young couple on the move from New York City. This four bedroom home wasn’t a major design challenge as it was mainly in need of a complete aesthetic overhaul. The major renovations were the kitchen and updating the bathrooms and adding a larger closet to the master bedroom. The biggest challenge was our time constraints, the designers completed this project from start to finish in just under four months.

Each bedroom is cozy and welcoming with fun and unique pieces of furniture and a bright and cheerful color palette. Custom-made linens for Julia B. Linens in Connecticut, make every guest room feel a little more personable and inviting. The designers believe that small attention to detail in each room can make a huge difference. The designers almost always try to incorporate interesting lighting throughout the home. Every room should have a focal point whether it’s the pattern on the walls, such as the entry way or the beautiful fabric in the living room curtains or a giant glass chandelier in the dining room. One of the major changes was in the kitchen. The designers added a banquet for casual seating and a bright punchy table. The original floor was dark wood
and the room was so large that it looked drab in the large gray and white kitchen. So, the floor was painted gray and white, and the result was probably the biggest game changer! The gray and white geometric floor really brings everything to life. The clients are young and like to entertain as much as they like to live in their home. The designers wanted to create a welcome and comfortable space that reflected their personalities. To achieve this, the designers painted or papered every wall and added beautiful window treatments and colorful furnishings. As you can see throughout the home, the designers have used a lot of beautiful and rich paint colors and or textured grasscloth or wall coverings. The result is a twist on the traditional. The house isn’t overly modern nor overly traditional or stuffy.

his space is designed for a young family with two kids. Decorator’s idea was to create a cheerful space: modern, but not high-tech, classic but not boring, bright but not blatant. Everything here – from planning to family monogram on lining – was tailor-made. An impressive collection of 20 works of modern art was acquired especially for this project and put into bright colorful frames. All the furniture was made on order, heavy classic textures were replaced by natural linen and cotton. Instead of traditional for Istomin’s project antique items, here he uses mostly vintage. The designer added his favorite touch – wallpaper with large prints on one single wall or even ceiling. Another favourite – extensive use of mirrors, for example, in window jambs, where they reflect the nature outside. “This place is not about ordinary object, ” the designer says, “it’s about emotions and good feelings.” 359

This spectacular villa designed by Kelly Hoppen MBE and situated in the picturesque south of France near Antibes was a challenge for the celebrated British interior designer. The London-based client, who had a traditional taste, wanted a very classic home, something with lots of colour and something very beautiful, but not too feminine in its overall look. As with all of her projects, the designer started with a neutral base and then built on this with accents of colour in each
Heveningham dining table, whilst relishing the spectacular views from the terrace. The light linen fabrics used for the cushions contribute to the relaxed feel while the ornate Guadarte chandeliers add a touch of glamour. With the eye-catching pink Moissonnier table at the centre as well as the pink velvet borders on the curtains, the entrance hall is a truly unique space and quite different to anything the designer has designed before. The clients’ favourite colour is
large double windows, the study is a beautiful, understated room in which one can relax. The touch of orange on the India Mahdavi stools can also be seen on the beautiful vintage cushion coverings the designer has elegantly designed in the living room with an Andrew Martin sofa and striking black chairs from Collection Pierre. The collection of black ipe cavalli coffee tables at the centre of the room are complimented by the dramatic black and white accessories and the
room using stunning fabrics, art and star pieces of furniture, such as the pink Moisonnier table in the entrance hall. The stunning outdoors area has been designed
pink so Kelly has undoubtedly remained loyal to the brief. A Birgit Israel chandelier hangs elegantly over the table and the floor to ceiling windows naturally light
beautiful black and white Birgit Israel lamps. The designer decided here to stick with her neutral colour palette as she felt the formal living spaces should be more neutral areas where the whole
to be a space where families and friends can enjoy food and conversation around the beautiful
the room beautifully. With plenty of natural light flooding in through the
family and all of their individual tastes come together in a harmonious way.

he client for this project is a fun, loving, and lively person. The designers felt her unique sole should be present through her home’s personality. Her family’s home should be in tune with their love for art and top notch elements; whether it was an accessory or a lighting piece, the designers buckled it down to the last detail. The client wanted a vacation house; meaning it must be fresh, fun, and ought to give an airy feel of the space, and become an escape zone from anything routine like. This dictated and influenced the use of bright colors, nature inspired patterns and textures in almost every corner of the space. The design is colorful and vibrant to essentially resemble its inhabitants and therefore, the project was named “The House of Joy”. The concept behind this home design was to work on vivacious styles, soft and sturdy textures and interpret colors in each space in a homogenous yet uniquely illustrated for the personal space. Starting from the entrance, the reception area wall speaks out with wave like textures that creates movement and adds dynamism to the space. The designers also added a beautiful sturdy Versace console and a sculpture by international artist Bruno Catalano that gave the space a well grounded feel. The main entrance wall is then contrasted with a subtle Oriental Moucharabieh that separates the TV family room, and the main living space. A mirror is then integrated in this element to give the illusion of a greater perspective to the
space. Pop art works such as “Hands up” by Donadini and “Taxi” by Gerstein are displayed in the family room showcasing the collection of the client. As entering the reception area, the elegance of the space as a whole is demonstrated through the fine points of our execution and custom designed furniture, which made this space one of a kind residence. The classical mixed-style furniture made the Vick Vanlian way and contrasted with the bright colors, nature-inspired patterns and textures; every corner of the space sends positive vibes and energy. Sophisticated wall and ceiling treatments, as well as lighting selections and accessories are what made it so sensuous. As shifting from one space to another, the transitions are studied carefully and made visible by the use of colors and a strong design backbone. Pop art works, rugs of floral or geometric motifs, personalized added details, all masterfully orchestrated together with elegance to convey the free, life loving, joyful personalities and lives of the owners.

The architectonical references were all incorporated, for instance, the large windows with its frames and finishing made in travertine marble and the original glass bricks, dividing the internal spaces, “acting together” with the new loft's concept. The 120 m 2 loft was articulated in rooms such as living room, dining room, a gourmet kitchen and the master bedroom – all of them have the same white Silestone flooring. On the entrance, there is an atrium with a library and a suspended fireplace. The carbon blue wall behind Hilal Sami Hilal’s art was painted by the artist Mario de Angelis.
408
The living room composed by 2 vis a vis sofas from the designers Guild leads the attention to the unfilled partition that divides the social and the private areas. The art déco inspiration can also be seen through the Tom Dixon's pendants that are on top of the dining table. The composition explores the combination of black and white through different textures and also the brazilian design through the usage of MF5 armchairs made by Carlos Millan. In order to create a cozy atmosphere, the shades of beiges and greys were used on finishings with leather, velvet and suede. The atemporality was reached by the usage of round shaped furnishing, with tapestry and some vintage references from the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s.
The planned furniture located in the gourmet kitchen, in the couple’s bedroom, in the bathroom and in the library were made by Florense, with artisanal furnishing's characteristic. The possibility to see the bathroom from the bedroom through the folding screen 30 cm × 80 cm, by Mellone + Associados, creates a delicacy and makes clear that the lighting system was fundamental to the project. This lighting project was signed by Guinter Parschalk who gave a different character to each space. Inside the bathroom, there is a marble sculpted wall that received a special attention with effects of lights and shadows.

This family Penthouse located in Singapore was totally renovated by Viterbo ID. The condo was built in the 1980’s and the unit needed a major renovation to accommodate the family of six that recently moved from Europe do Singapore. Their main request is to make this apartment a “home , not only a house and comfortable to have friends over. The interior style is Contemporary European with an Asian flare. In terms of the decor, the residence stands out a balance between formal and casual, with a range of traditional and modern furnishings. The dining room is inviting with a big dining table with 10 seats, ideal for intimate dinners with friends. The contemporary artworks are strategically displayed in order to fill the long and wide corridors . All the loose furniture and fabrics were sourced in Europe.

he brief was to transform a duplex apartment shell in the new Mirage Development, being constructed in De Waterkant. This trendy suburb is located in the heart of Cape Town and in the day, hosts cool-hunting hipsters frequenting impossibly quaint eateries and in the evening, it becomes the urbanites playground as fashion and art champion the nights. The brief to the Design Dream Team was to create a sanctuary for these city slickers, and to create a space that captures the “urban chic, combining contemporary living with high design.

The design of the duplex apartment expresses a distinctly modern African attitude that is current with today’s demands of fast paced city living. The apartment is a space of calm and serenity for reenergising, relaxing within, floating above the city streets of its location. Using these criteria as the foundation of the design direction, the interior is a stylised and dynamic clutter free space that is a forward thinking, contemporary luxury urban space

The spatial constrictions of the space have influenced the design and careful consideration to ergonomic planning, have influenced the design process. The requirements of the modern urban couple, that desire to live a streamlined, fluid and finely focused existence and the need to express one's individuality have been at the forefront in the conceptualisation of the apartment. The design takes advantage of the small space to highlight clever functionality and wherever possible spaces double-up in function. There is a strong emphasis on rhythm, geometric forms and graphic elements that are reflective of modern patterns. The general colour pallet is kept crisp and monochromatic for a clean and uncluttered look and feel. This is warmed up with a beautiful dark wood parquet flooring and again the warm timber is picked up in the angular graphic timber screen used behind the bedroom wall to separate the dressing room en-suite. The parquet flooring, concealed LED lighting and dĂŠcor items bring the added dimension of warmth into the space.
