t’s one thing to entertain the kids all day on the weekends. It’s another when you have seven days a week to fill for an indefinite period of time. The secret is one that schools know well: Make a routine! The goal is to keep kids busy and learning while allowing you to get other things done too.

A breath of fresh air. Outdoor time has lots of benefits for kids – and a key one for you: If they burn off steam, they may be more tired and willing to go to sleep at night. Build in reading 15 - 20 minutes a day is a great place to start, whether parent reads aloud, child reads aloud (if the child can read) or if it’s silent reading. If your child wants to extend a reading period, don’t worry about messing up the schedule, encourage it!

Make a screen time routine. Make screen time predictable: a set time in the schedule Start with their school routine. have so children know when to expect When are they used to having time (like while you make breakfast, snack, break time and screen breakfast or before rest time) lunch? Divide the day into small and for how long. chunks much like school does with subjects and if your child It’s always worth remembering has assigned schoolwork, do learning isn’t always about they work best in the morning or that the curriculum, and that there afternoon? are plenty of other ways children can learn. If you’re now at home Dedicate time for play. with your brood, how about When a child is imagining, imparting some of your own creating, building or inventing, wisdom and knowhow. This could they are doing some serious be a great time to teach them to learning. Your child will be cook, do the washing, check the hooked for longer on simple oil in the car, sew a button, or toys - building blocks, cars, wire a plug. Obviously, activities dolls. Accept some play life lessons are always going invitations, but don’t feel guilty and to age dependent, but you get about skipping others. Kids the idea. need to play independently of adults (independent doesn’t Of course even with the most mean unsupervised). perfectly planned schedule, you will still have days when you just can’t muster the energy to come up with even the simplest activity and instead let them watch another episode of their favourite show. That’s O.K too. Do what you need to do to get through that day. You’ll have your routine to go back to the next day. And the one after that, too. Good luck!
