CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SENIOR SCHOOL When pupils at Crosfields School in Shinfield reached Year 8, they have historically moved on to another school, but from autumn 2021, the school will be taking pupils from Year 9. Pupils celebrated recently as construction work officially began on their brand new Senior School building. Familyowned construction firm, Beard, held a traditional breaking ground ceremony with Headmaster Craig Watson (pictured left) and four Year 8 pupils. They were also joined by Beard’s Operations Director, Jamie Harwood (pictured right) who showed the pupils around the site and talked to them about the building methods involved on the project.

The modern, two-storey Senior School is being built within the school’s grounds and will comprise bright classrooms, a flexible performance space, library and* children café under 10 for years pupils. In 2018, the independent, co-educational day school announced that it would be extending its age range to 16, and from September 2021 will welcome girls and boys into Year 9 for the first time in its history. This will be the first cohort of children to go through to GCSE at Crosfields. To find out what Crosfields could offer your child from Year 7 or Year 9, visit www.crosfields.com or contact the Registrar on 0118 987 9902.

SO LONG, VIC JERROM Residents in the Burghfeld and Grazeley communities have said a fond farewell to popular fundraiser and youth volunteer Vic Jerrom who passed away in October. Many readers will be familiar with Vic’s volunteer work because he ran the Grazeley car boot sale for a whopping 30 years! Grazeley village hall hosted sports, shows, local group meetings and private parties and was funded by the hire charges and the car boot.

Vic was always heavily involved with youth clubs since his teenage years in Grazeley and became a youth club leader for many years. He became an active committee member at the Berkshire Association of Young People (which later became Berkshire Youth). Vic remained on the committee until earlier this

PAINTING & PANINIS Move over Matisse and step aside Picasso. Mortimer has it’s own abstract artist.... And it turns out, he’s rather good!

Next time you visit Mortimer Cafe for your full English breakfast, you might find that things look a little bit different on the inside. The well-loved local cafe on Victoria Road has recently offered its wall space to a local artist, Leo Zarkov, to display his creations, creating an art gallery within the cafe. Not only can you enjoy looking at this beautiful art while you sip your cappuccino, you can also purchase the artwork, too.

eye

There is lots of current publicity around ‘buying local’ and supporting local businesses, so who do you know that would appreciate some original art?

s

Community New

The paintings range in size and style, each of them beautiful abstract creations which would look amazing in any home this Christmas. Why not pop in for some food and drink, browse the collection and treat someone - or yourself? If you want to have a chat with Leo about purchasing any of his artwork or commissioning a piece, please call 07500 772183

GIRLS, WHY NOT JOIN TADLEY RUGBY CLUB! The Covid19 pandemic was a worrying time for Tadley Rugby Club and no-one really knew what the turn out would be like when they were eventually given permission by the RFU to return to training after an enforced 5 month break. In short, there was no need to be concerned. Tadley Rugby Club has seen an exciting increase in numbers across all age groups from Colts (U18) all the way down to the U6 squad. There have also been lots of girls joining the club, particularly the U6, U7 and U8 squads, which has meant looking at options for their future development. The girls’ game is growing rapidly and deserves a targeted approach so this year, Tadley Rugby Club has launched its very own Girls Rugby Team! With the girl’s first training session taking place at the end of September, the founding members and their coaches would love other girls to come and give it a ‘try’, so if you know someone aged 10-15, why not go along on Sunday from 10.30am - 11.30am and check it out? For more information you can email j.illingworth@hotmail.co.uk

FREDDIE THAT’S WHEELY FANTASTIC

Local lady, Sharon Simpson recently instigated a heartwarming chain of events which all started with a neighbourly chat to Tadley resident, Amanda Nash. She found out that Amanda’s son, Freddie, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was going to school in a buggy because the family cannot access funding to provide a wheelchair. Sharon was moved by his plight and set up a GoFundMe Page, promoting it on Facebook. In response, Sharon was contacted by a lady called Sandra Simms who offered to purchase a paediatric self-propelled wheelchair for Freddie. The family and Sharon were overwhelmed by her generosity. When it was delivered, Freddie and his mum were completely bowled over. Freddie took to the chair straight away and quickly became independent. What a fantastic outcome.

JAMES CARTER

Former Willink pupil James Carter, 19, a music student, producer and DJ is embracing incredible success reaching millions of listeners with his music, with audiences all over the world. Having just entered his final year of a Music Management degree at the University of West London, James has already amassed more than 65 million streams on Spotify – with his track, Hands in the Fire after it went viral across TikTok in Asia gaining over 100 mIllion views. What started out as a hobby in his bedroom a few short years ago, experimenting with creating and sharing remixed tracks online, James has now built up a reputabe global fan base, working as an active producer and DJ and even being behind official remixed tracks for the likes of Rihanna, James Arthur & Ava Max to name a few! It seems that his latest release Almost Love (featuring Dominic Neill) is set for similar success too, having already reached more than 10 million streams on Spotify. We wish you well James. Well done.

Niall, Sean and Brendan English, a set of triplets from Burghfield Common, have launched their own brand of rum. They got involved in the rum business back in 2015, working free of charge at numerous rum festivals to build up contacts. In 2017 they launched Rum Runners TV and have worked with brands such as Old J Spiced Rum and Cloven Hoof Spiced Rum (who they featured with on Dragon’s Den), running their events.

THE ENGLISH TRIPLETS

The triplets, who all went to The Willink School, engaged a business partner with 12 years’ experience in the drinks industry when they decided to launch their own brand and product. The triplets wanted to create a brand based on the number three, which is how the name Holy Trinity rum came about. Holy Trinity Rum is an exceptional 40% ABV white rum that combines an equal blend of three Caribbean rums which makes for an exceptional tasting Daiquiri! Fancy treating yourself to a bottle? Holy Trinity Rum is available from www.gerrys.uk.com We’re also giving away a couple of bottles in our competition this month on page 16.

LOGAN MATTHEWS At first glance, Logan Matthews is a regular ten year old boy. He lives in Silchester and plays football with his friends for Spencers Wood Football Club. All the usual stuff. But Logan is not a regular ten year old. He has, in fact, been quietly becoming a child star! He made his West End debut in the summer of 2019, performing as ‘James’ in Lloyd Webber’s sensational musical, School of Rock. Logan has also featured in a TV advert for Arlo Smart Home and performed the lead role in a short film set in the 1970s called ‘SPUD’ which is due to be released in 2021. Right now, Logan is in and out of the recording studio voicing the lead role in a new animated kids television series which will be on our screens next year. Unfortunately it’s super confidential and, until it’s been announced, we can’t give you any more details, other than to say that it’s a fab show and your kids will LOVE it! GETTING eye GREENER ocally TM

Mortimer St John’s

Environment

L

Congratulations to the Eco Warriors at Mortimer St John’s Infant School who have recently been awarded the International Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, the culmination of over two years’ hard work. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award for excellence in environmental action and learning. Schools work up to this level by achieving Bronze and Silver awards which are stepping stones along the way.

Local schools Aldermaston Primary School and The Willink in Burghfield Common are generating their own green electricity thanks to solar panels funded by West Berkshire District Council’s Community Municipal Investment (CMI) scheme.

The whole school has been working hard on a wide range of environmental issues and it has needed the co-operation of parents, pupils, cleaners, the school lunch team, afterschool club and all of the teaching team to achieve this, led by the school’s Eco Warriors. Congratulations to you all.

Aldermaston C of E Primary School headteacher Melanie Higgs said: “We’re delighted to be part of this project. Our children are passionate about protecting the environment so the opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint by generating green energy was very welcome. We can’t wait to see how much energy we can produce and how this will benefit the school’s finances.” The funding has helped with financing other green projects including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) to protect and enhance the natural environment, updating traffic lights to LED and a scheme for cycleways to promote sustainable transport. West Berkshire is the first council in the UK to launch this innovative investment scheme and aims to make the district net zero carbon by 2030.

PLASTIC FREE HOMES Spencers Wood resident, David Lamont runs not-for-profit online community, Plastic Free Home. He promotes living sustainably and has 30,000 followers in over 20 countries. David is running a fundraising campaign for the Woodland Trust in the lead up to Christmas because of the vital importance of trees to our planet’s eco-system, their pivotal role in helping to handle our country’s growing carbon output and their provision of essential habitats for millions of animals and insects. A donation of just £10 can pay for the Woodland Trust to plant 7 trees. So far, his online community has raised more than enough to plant an entire copse. To donate, please visit: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/plastic-free-home

12

Did you know that The Woodland Trust runs a scheme which sends free trees to organisations? Those who can apply include schools, nurseries, colleges, universities and outdoor learning centres, as well as groups such as resident associations, sports clubs, parish councils, scouts, guides and many more. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/ plant-trees/free-trees.

IMPORTANT READER ANNOUNCEMENT It’s sad to see that so many small business have gone out of business due to the viral outbreak. Many more will simply not survive a winter of little or zero cashflow. This month we are launching a campaign to ask our readers to consider shopping locally and buying from a small local business instead of using the big boys/girls for every purchase. Our local small independent businesses are run by your friends, their friends, their families, neighbours and the wider community. They’re crafters, makers and bakers. They’re artists, stylists and painters. They’re glass lowers, jewellery makers and even personal trainers. They are local people just like you, with homes to heat and mouths to feed. Lots of them are the ones that have fallen through the Government’s cracks. They are among the hundreds of thousands of people who have, through no fault of their own been left behind. Simply put, this means that many have not recieved a single penny in government financial support either through furlough or grant schemes. And, they are relying solely on the money they can make by continuing to sell their goods, wares and services to local people like you. Whether it’s a handmade gift, a pot of local preserve, vouchers for anything from a new hair-do, a massage, manicure, a meal, a few beers or even a spot of home cleaning (yes, our Editor swears this would actually make an excellent present - apparently it’s the ultimate gift of time)... Think outside of the box this Christmas and give something you wouldn’t usually give... We know that the small businesses of the area will be very grateful.

Lucy and Julian Fernando are the couple behind Fantastic Services and they have been operating in the Reading area for a year now, having started up in November 2019. Reading-based Lucy and Julian met working in the same shop eight years ago and are now happily married and running two successful businesses. Their journey with Fantastic Services started when they visited a franchise exhibition and spoke to the Fantastic Services team there. They knew the business was a good fit for them and felt confident that they would have full support from Fantastic Services in learning the industry. Lucy and Julian have combined experience in retail, sales and administration which means that they understand great customer service and the importance of strong processes. This year they have been focusing on recruiting cleaning technicians to meet demand and raising awareness of the business among the local community. Working for themselves has given the couple the flexibility to balance their business with family life, which is important now that they are parents, too. Most importantly, they have found that they really enjoy working together and sharing business goals.

Last November, that dream came true and she has since been working hard to establish Mad Hatter’s Floral Design and raising awareness of her new enterprise. Kerry grows as much of her own flower stock as possible (flowers are grown in Aldermaston on Frouds Lane and on the Wasing Estate) and when she has to buy in extra stock, she prefers to buy British stock whenever she can. The strong local support shown for her new business has been very much appreciated.

To celebrate Mad Hatter’s first birthday, Kerry is offering a fabulous competition prize. You can be in with a chance of winning a place on her Christmas Wreath Making Workshop worth £65 - on Saturday 12th December. Take a look below for entry details. Mad Hatter’s Floral Design offers flower arrangements (and balloons!) for all occasions including wedding flowers, sympathy flowers, new arrivals and other special occasions. As well as the arrangements featured on the website, Kerry also offers bespoke design. And, of course, they will organise delivery, too.

Get in touch with us today, and learn more about our floral arrangements or workshops.

Collaborative Law during Covid-19 What is collaborative law? - It is an alternative dispute resolution process for divorcing couples. It is another way in which a separating couple can resolve issues without the need for court proceedings. It involves the parties and their collaboratively trained solicitors engaging in 4 way meetings, with a view to settling matters through negotiations. A court order can then be sought in the terms of any agreement reached between the parties. Is it the same as mediation? This process is different to mediation, in that a collaborative solicitor is there to assist you with negotiations whereas a mediator facilitates the negotiation but is not working on behalf of either party.

Your

The collaborative process can reduce legal fees but, more importantly, it can reduce conflict between the two parties. How can we have face to face meetings in lockdown? Lockdown does not prevent this occurring but, our solicitors are also able to represent you via the collaborative process on various social media platforms. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Where can I find collaboratively trained solicitors? Collaboratively trained solicitors can be hard to find but at Rowberry Morris both Family Partners, Peter Reynolds and Julie Gallimore are experienced collaborative lawyers. Both Julie and Peter have a wealth of experience and will ensure that their clients are aware of the best approaches to take.

There is no court set timetable, so you can work around the parties priorities and commitments.

TO P CR FOR TIP AC A S CV KING

What does it involve? Collaborative divorce involves both parties and their respective solicitors signing up at the start of the process to work on a collaborative process, which means that they agree to work on a solution without going to court. Instead of negotiating by letter or phone, you have face to face negotiations,

with the benefit of legal representation.

Make provision for the things you love

Finance & Legal

(with a little help from us)

There can be challenging times when running a business and it would be an understatement to say that the last 7 months have been no exception. At the initial stages of lockdown we told all our staff that we had no intention of furloughing anyone. We wanted to try and ensure that our business and service to clients could continue. And it did. We have the deepest sympathy for all those individuals and businesses who, through no fault of their own, have been hit so much harder.

Zoom & Socially Distanced Face to Face appointments available

Investments With markets in freefall at one stage, we did have a few concerned clients wondering how their investments were performing. While our work is generally more about long term financial planning than short term investment returns, we absolutely understand that, perhaps fuelled by the press, some clients wanted reassurance. The investment work we do is perhaps too complex to explain here. The message is simple. The FTSE 100 is a concentrated portfolio of UK shares with little diversification. The Bluesky portfolios have global diversification in many different asset classes and it is this diversification that has created stability and outperformance. All our funds have performed how we expected them to with the higher risk portfolios falling the most but recovering faster. The lowest risk fund fell a little over 10% at it’s worst (compared with the FTSE 100 at over 30%) and has now recovered (with all of our other funds) and are now ahead of where they were a year ago. Exactly what we expected! Client Survey From time to time we ask our clients to take part in a survey to see how we are doing and ask where we can improve. Doing a survey in the middle (?) of a pandemic might be a risky thing to do if people are not generally in their happiest place. We were delighted with the responses and the testimonials that were sent in. Peace of mind, trust, clarity and understanding were regularly used by our clients when we asked them to describe what we did for them. • 100% of the clients who responded said that they would recommend us to friends, family or colleagues. • 100% of the clients who responded said that they believe that working with us has helped or will help them to achieve their financial goals. • 100% of the clients who responded said that they are satisfied with the speed of response from the Bluesky team. • Very importantly, 100% of the clients who responded said that they have been satisfied with our communications during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are enormously grateful (and proud!) to get these responses. It would seem that we did what we said we would do.

The nights are closing in and gardens are winding down for the colder months but let's not forget that autumn is nature's time for planting. Before the frosts start, you can put in new plants or move established ones to better positions. Now is a good time to plant shrubs and hedging as the soil is warm enough to encourage root growth, even if the air is cold.

Acer, hawthorn and birch all give wonderful seasonal displays in gold. red and orange. Cotoeasters are loaded with red or yellow berries, which birds feast on. Do your bit for wildlife by planting native hedges, such as hazel, and the already mentioned hawthorn and birch. It will help encourage a host of wildlife as well as bringing nature and diversity into your garden.

Get fruity this month and plant fruit trees and soft fruit ready for next year. Apple, pear and plum trees are in the garden centre, along with raspberry, blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes. It’s the right time to plant them for a ripe harvest next summer. Tulip bulbs can go in the ground now and this is your last chance to plant all other spring bulbs. You’ll be glad of the effort in the spring. Five inches is the right depth for bulbs that will be lifted after flowering, or eight inches for permanent planting. Plant them on a good sprinkle of horticultural grit to help with drainage too. If you’ve planted any bulbs in bowls, place them out of direct sunlight and waterthem when the soil gets dry.

When planting shrubs and trees, add slow-acting fertiliser to the planting hole and be generous with the compost to get them off to a healthy start.

L Get some colour in your life!

It’s lovely to still have colour in the garden at this time of year. Cyclamen and crysanthemums add welcome bursts of colour. Winter flowering pansies look good in containers or could add clusters in your borders to brighten up dull patches. Or how about a Christmas rose for a wintery display of white flowers?

Garden Jobs For November

As we’re approaching the frost season, remember to protect tender p!ants with horticultural fleece. Move containers close to the house so they are less exposed to the elements. Now’s the time to tidy up the garden before it gets too cold. Clear away fallen branches and leaves, but leave it a bit untidy for wildlife to go about their business.

by next spring. Don't forget wild birds! Put bird feed or scraps on a bird table, and add nuts to your bird feeders, along with a water source that's kept topped up. Happy Gardening!

WHO REMEMBERS THE GREEN CROSS CODE MAN?

I

f you grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, you’re sure to remember the Green Cross Code Man. He was the star of just one of a number of Public Information films released around this time to keep us children safe when crossing the road. We also had the ‘Charley Says’ cartoons. Remember them? They featured a little boy called Tony and his cat, named Charley, voiced by comedian Kenny Everett - who knew?! Charley would "miaow" the lesson of the episode, which the boy would then translate and explain. Most of the topics dealt with everyday safety issues children face, such as not going off with strangers or not playing with matches.

from Green Cross Control to any location where children needed help to cross safely. They don’t make them like that any more! So how do children learn about road safety these days? As the nights draw in for the winter months, our roads become an ever darkening danger to our youngsters. These days, the Green Cross Code is taught in schools in conjunction with the government’s THINK! road safety campaign. Whilst this modern approach is popular with children it doesn’t seem to have permeated our homes in the way that the campaigns did in the 80s. It does, however, have some good resources online for teaching your children road safety. Take a look: www.brake.org.uk The Green Cross Code has gone through some changes over the years, but the underlying message remains the same. Do you still remember it?

THINK! Find the safest place to cross, then stop.

The Green Cross Code Man’s predecessor was well-loved Tufty The Squirrel, voiced by Bernard Cribbins OBE. The huge success of this character led to the creation of the Tufty Club for children and more than 30,000 Tufty books about road safety were issued to parents. At its peak there were nearly 25,000 branches of the Tufty Club throughout the UK, and by the early 1970s an estimated two million children were members. But our favourite, the costumed superhero character, the Green Cross Code Man burst onto our screens in a series of short films between 1975 and 1990. In the films, the Green Cross Code Man had the power to teleport

From whittling wood and learning to use tools, to clambering over trees, rolling around in the mud, minibeast hunting or cooking marshmallows on an open fire; children enjoy a multitude of adventures through Forest Schools at Jubilee. Set in 63 acres of private woodland and gardens, Jubilee Day Nursery and its term-time sister nursery Jubilee Gems, promise to give children learning experiences which are truly unique. Jubilee’s Forest School Leaders create a programme of exciting woodland adventures to ensure all children connect and learn through nature from the moment they arrive at both nurseries. FARM VISITS The children always make sure to stop by the farm to say hello to the animals too! The donkeys, goats, cows and sheep are always pleased to see the children’s smiley faces, especially if they know they are going to be fed! Having recently welcomed a number of calves to its farm, Jubilee is expecting lambs this Winter. Be sure to check our Facebook pages to see the pictures. CHILDCARE TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS Jubilee Day Nursery provides childcare for babies and children from 3 months to 5-years-old, offering sessional care 51 weeks of the year. WHO ORDERED A HOT TUB FOR THE WEEKEND?

It’s fair to say that recent months have thrown a ‘mahoosive’ spanner in the works for our events and hospitality sector. Overnight, entire industries were almost decimated, leaving thousands of small business owners to fend for themselves and find alternative ways to keep their business going - in any way they could. Whilst Rishi and his teams have worked hard to ensure that the majority have been supported financially through its furlough scheme and employment retention propositions - there are a significant number of small businesses which, through no fault of their own, have been left almost high and dry and having to diversify and think of new and innovative ways to keep their businesses afloat. One such business is our local wedding and event specialist, Berkshire Wedding Hire. Run by exceptionally talented husband and wife duo, Lucy and Doug Alexander, BWH would normally be flat out at this time of the year moving from the summer wedding celebration frenzy to the craziness of arranging Christmas parties for the masses. Instead, with no festive feasts on the horizon and weddings taking on a more low key approach, what can a company who prides itself on creating unforgettable live events do to ensure it survives the winter? Hunker down and hibernate like a hedgehog and hope it gets better by the spring - or look at the services they CAN actually provide at this time.

So what’s on offer?

With lavish parties banned, who says you can’t have some fun at home with your family with winter.. Perhaps you have a birthday, an anniversary or simply just want to do someting a little different in the coming weeks? How about hiring in one of their Helsinki 7 seater hot tubs and

relaxing in style with a bottle of bubbly. The team will deliver, install and set up your tub (normally) on a Thursday and collect again on Mondays, giving you the whole weekend to make the most of it. Other days of the week are available too, just ask. Other items they can provide include: Giant Fun & Games, Outdoor Winter Cinemas, Garden Crazy Golf, Retro Arcade Games, Table Tennis, Giant Buzzer Games, Sleepover Parties, Glamping Parties, Silent Discos and even Balloons & Sweets! The team at BWH has also opened up a small, COVID secure family portrait sudio in Swallowfield where they are offering a special Christmas Family Photo shoot session (from £29.99) where they have a fabulous selection of festive backdrops. There are a number of prints included in the price too, which would make excellent Christmas presents for loved ones who would love nothing more than to see ther relatives in any way they can this yuletide. Please, support local this Christmas. Our local businesses need you more than Amazon does!

Teenage super sleuth Brown breathes new life into a well worn classic Adapted from the first book of the young adult fiction series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, this original story of the 14 year old little sister to Sherlock and Mycroft is a breath of fresh air. Not surprising given the talent behind and in front of the camera, namely award

winning director Harry Bradbeer, who brought us the hit TV series Killing Eve and Fleabag, and it’s star Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things fame. Throw in Henry Caville as Sherlock, Sam Claffin as Mycroft, and Helena Bonham Carter as their absent mother Eudoria and you get two hours of stellar entertainment from a stellar line-up. We kick off in the glorious English countryside of Victorian era 1884, where at Ferndell Hall Enola wakes to find her mother has disappeared without

BOOK OF THE MONTH

any explanation. Leaving only an assortment of gifts, her absence prompts the arrival of older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft to take care of matters. Despairing at her feminist upbringing they are set on sending Enola away to a finishing school for young ladies. However, raised on a unique diet of literary classics, science, chess and hand to hand combat, Enola has the brawn and brain to outwit her brothers and flee for london in phase one of her mission to track down her mother. Her journey is interrupted when she meets the young runaway Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), who finds himself at the centre of a mysterious conspiracy that threatens to rewrite the course of history. Beguiled by his boyish charm, she follows her heart and unravels the case to become a super sleuth in her own right. The first thing that grabs you is the movie’s tone and style which instantly pulls you into Enola’s mind. By breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience directly down the camera we get inside her every thought and desire helping you to champion her along like a good friend. The pace of the opening is as quickfire as the razor sharp script, with Enola’s early years condensed down to a montage that gives us the only glimpses

of her mother. And just as you draw breath we are introduced to the brothers, a fastidious Mycroft and an exceedingly smooth, suave Sherlock. Although more muscular than most before him, Caville’s Holmes is so convincing he’s in danger of stealing the show. But here he plays a more peripheral role as the curious brother turned father figure who never seems to be fully engaged in matters. This quite deliberately keeps the stage clear for future star Millie Bobby Brown who lights up every scene she’s in, and shows exactly what she can do with a full head of hair and free from the psychokinetic powers that made her name in Stranger Things. The apple of her mother’s eye she dazzles in a role that rejects the gender role society has assigned her, a worthy theme fit for any family audience. Enola Holmes is a movie that feels very much at home on Netflix, feeling more like a TV special than a grand scale cinematic experience but is no worse off for it. It’s a warm, friendly and spirited twist on a well trodden world executed with such precision it leaves you ready to roll straight into episode 2. The game is afoot! 3/5

READING'S INFLUENTIAL WOMEN BY TERRY DIXON AND LINDA SAUL

When I heard that Terry Dixon of ‘Terry’s Reading Walkabouts’ fame had co-authored this book about the influential women of my home town of Reading, I was keen to read it. It really is a lovely pocket-guide to female ‘movers and shakers’ in Reading through the ages, from Empress Matilda way back in the 1100s, right through to local modern day achievers such as Olympic gold medal winners Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh. Some of these women are well-known international names, while others are unsung heroes who perhaps deserve to be. Among the pages are easy-to-read stories on each – over 60 women – ranging from scientists and sportswomen to artists and writers. The book leaves you with a feeling of pride about what these women have achieved against the odds and I would thoroughly recommend it.

let’s do MORE

Forever Friends Making friends as an adult The world is going through uncertain times and friends have never been more important. They provide stability, comfort, and connection. The defining feature of friendship is that it’s voluntary. We retain friendships because we want to, not because we have to. The downside is that friendships often fall by the wayside. Our adult lives are incredibly busy with obligations to work, spouses, children and older parents, and friendships can suffer as a result. We can lose friendships so rapidly that some of us live our lives as adults essentially friendless and this has ramifications for our mental health. Studies suggest that, without friends, we’re at higher risk of depression and anxiety, and that the key difference between the happiest and unhappiest people is how socially connected they are. Making friends as an adult takes deliberate effort, and this can be an issue if you lack confidence socially. Shy people often avoid events where they might have to interact socially. One way to get over this is to assume that people will like you. Studies show that this mindset is actually a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who assume they will be liked share more about themselves, disagree less, and have a more positive attitude, which of course makes positive social interaction more likely. As a child friendships seem to happen organically. As an adult we need to let go of this idea and take responsibility rather than waiting passively. We need to show up at event and say ‘hello’ when we get there. We need to introduce ourselves yourself to other people,

Mental Health

and ask for their phone numbers, then follow up and arrange to meet, and we need to go through this initiation process repeatedly. It can be scary but the pay-off is worth it. In studies, people with good initiation skills tend to have more and better friendships. Initiation doesn't turn a person into a friend. Some people are good at connecting but struggle to sustain relationships. Sociologists have long recognised that friendships thrive on continuous interaction. This means choosing activities carefully. It's a good idea to sign up for activities that provide multiple opportunities to connect, such as a language class, a writing course, or a book club a book club. Repeated interactions capitalise on the 'exposure effect', our tendency to like things more, the more familiar they are. So, if we want to make

eye

friends, we should commit to showing up somewhere for a few months. At the moment this is even more difficult than usual because of pandemic restrictions, but in fact people are starting to connect more in online groups. Some studies have shown that shy people actually find online interaction easier and that people tend to open up more because they have time to think before posting. These online relationships have the capacity to become lasting friendships in the real world. If your aim is to find local friends to hang out with after the pandemic then its best to find local based groups, even if they are online for now. A quick search of my local area on Facebook threw up groups for crochet, eco-living, gardening, cooking, and a book club. We all need friends so take a deep breath and say hello first.

ROHO YOGA The last few months have seen many people start to make a change in their life. An enforced slow-down has made many of us re-assess our busy lives.

Sharon Beardmore runs Roho Yoga. She can fully identify with the changes that people want to make. She says, ”My life was hectic and I loved every minute of it. I had a career I loved, that took up far too many hours, and for the rest of the time I juggled family, friends, the gym and chores. It felt like a great life…Until it didn’t.”

When Sharon became unwell, she turned to yoga out of desperation. Through the regular practice of yoga, she found that she was becoming stronger, more toned, sleeping better and regaining her enthusiasm for life. A year later Sharon trained to become a yoga teacher and that was how RohoYoga came into being.

that comes from a Hatha Yoga class is something that I don’t want to live without again.”

RohoYoga is for real people with a focus on enabling you to make space in your life for a healthier, calmer, mind and body so that you feel energised, healthy and able to be who you want to be.

Sharon also offers virtual classes. An easy way to reap all the benefits without having to travel to a class. With prices from as little as £4 per class (when booking a set of 5 classes), why not give it a try?

Sharon teaches Hatha Yoga which incorporates the breath, body and mind and is a slower class than a Vinyasa or Ashtanga class. Sharon says, “The calmness
