RESIDENTS A LIDL CONCERNED? Plans have been submitted for a new Lidl supermarket and more than 40 homes to be built on land that people living nearby say is a wildlife area. Lower Earley Properties had submitted plans to build the supermarket and 43 one-to-four bedroom flats on land just off Meldreth Way, Lower Earley. One resident commented “I am concerned about the loss of green amenity space during a time when the neighbouring housing development in Lower Earley has been desperate for green space. The sad loss of greenbelt that is much loved by local people and wildlife and has been ongoing for many years.

However, despite the opposition, Andy Jansons, managing director of parent company Jansons Property, said: “I’m pleased to welcome Sovereign Housing to the scheme. Having both Lidl and Sovereign Housing on board is a big vote of confidence in our plans and shows that they are deliverable. “The plans for 43 new homes at Lower Earley will provide much-needed housing for local people. We’re looking forward to providing a mix of affordable rented and shared ownership homes on this sustainable and deliverable site. The plans can be viewed on wokingham.gov.uk

GREEN FINGERS, GREEN LIVING

Have you been enjoying time in your garden recently? Perhaps you have been doing some planting. If you’ve been visiting your local garden centre or supermarket for bedding plants, you have probably got a pile of empty plastic trays and plastic pots to dispose of. But what is the best way to dispose of them? Most kerbside recycling schemes don’t take them and none of us want to chuck plastic in our grey bin if we can help it, so we were delighted to find out that local garden centre, Dobbies in Shinfield, offers a plastic pot and tray return service. All you have to do is pop down to your local store to prevent them going to landfill. Thanks Dobbies!

IT’S A HURRY FOR EMILY! Last month, an inspired ten year old and her dad set off on the Farnham Charity Bike Ride and Sportive, an annual cycle event, which offers riders the opportunity to raise money for charity and offers a number of different routes, from 16 miles to 75 miles! Emily Hurry, a local student, challenged herself by opting for the 25 mile cycle loop. The route featured 1,800 feet of climbing up challenging but doable hills, two refreshment points, and loads of fabulous sites to enjoy; up and over the Surrey and Hampshire hills. Emily took part in the challenge to raise money for First Days Children’s Charity. First Days reduces the effects of poverty on children by providing them everything they need in their early years and at school. The charity believes that all children deserve the same start in life and they help over 2000 children a year who are living in poverty, across Berkshire and the UK. Can a 10 year old ride 25 Miles?…. Yes she can. And she did it in 2 hours and 58 minutes raising over £500 and smashing her target! Well done, Emily! What a massive achievement. If you would like to support this much-needed charity, and show your support of Emily’s efforts at the same time, you can donate at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sarah-hurry6

WE ARE BERKSHIRE BUSINESS CHAMPIONS!

Regular readers will know that our community pages are always filled with stories about local people and businesses who are achieving great things. This month, it’s our turn to make it into the news! Earlier in the spring, Eye Magazines were shortlisted as finalists as ‘Berkshire Business Champions’ with the Town & County SME Awards - which we then went on to win in July! The award was in recognition of our accelerated efforts to help other small local businesses during the pandemic. Our strive to ensure that the good people of the area maintained a sense of regular normality, helpful local information and very importantly, access to local trades,

Community News

services and ‘what’s going on’ hadn’t gone unnoticed. With the awards ceremony being held at the Tara Copthorne hotel in Kensington, the extended Eye team decided to dress to impress, venture OUT OUT for the first time in forever - and make a day of it. Also joining us on the day was one of our longest serving advertisers, Toby Spring of Blue Banana TV, who has advertised in every single issue since issue number 2, of the Burghfield, Theale & Mortimer edition back in 2011!

SCOUTING AROUND It was all smiles at the The Scouts Executive Committee Meeting recently and one of the key topics was fundraising - a hot topic for any charity right now and you might be able to help!

Toby told us that his business has been helped enormously over the years with the coverage we’ve been able to provide. “Having just celebrated our 10th birthday and 100th issue, the timing of winning such an award couldn’t have been better” said our Editor, Hellen. “We are a small, local family run business and our team have been working their socks off to make sure that our advertisers and readers continue to be introduced to each other month after month in a fun and informative way. I’m so proud of them!”

TV GLAMOUR IN SHINFIELD

Do you work for a company that gives you a number of days to volunteer? Does your company match donations when you perform a charitable act? Does your company have a fund from which it makes donations to local charities? 1st Lower Earley Scout Group (and likewise scouts across the globe) is a charity and their ability to fund raise has been curtailed since March 2020. They are looking for ways to increase the monies they have available to support their activities. If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, they would love to hear from you with any ideas you may have to help with any fundraising. Please contact them on getinvolved@1stlowerearleyscouts.org.uk

Last month, Wokingham Borough Council were briefed on plans for a new TV studio, part of the University of Reading’s ambitious Cine Valley project in Shinfield. The new studio would be complementary to the nearby Shinfield Studios and aims to support the increased demand for quality regional studio space from the TV industry. The studio is designed to host audience-based entertainment shows, including chat and game shows. It is anticipated that the TV studio will be capable of seating audiences of up to 600 people at maximum capacity if required. Darren Browne, Commercial Director of the University of Reading said, “This studio would support 150 full time equivalent roles involved in the running of the studios, such as engineers, electricians and office staff, as well as production roles including camera operators, sound engineers and lighting specialists, and for audience handling, such as catering and security. It would also present opportunities for students at the University of Reading and elsewhere to get hands-on experience of the television industry.” Lights, camera, action!

The Utopia Strong, who are headlining the second stage, features ex-World Snooker Champion Steve Davis!

You may already be familiar with Heavy Pop because they are also the creators behind the popular Are You Listening? Festival, a one day music festival in Reading that has raised over £70,000 for local learning disability charity Reading Mencap since it began in 2013.

The award-winning Siren Craft Brew will be running the main Festival Bar, and there will be a number of pop-up bars and mouth-watering food stalls to please festival goers on the day. There will be kids activities, too, to keep the little ones entertained.

The Ruins are illuminated when darkness falls, creating one of the most spectacular event spaces in the UK. There are great transport links, too. The festival site is less than five minutes’ walk from Reading Station and well connected for buses, too.

The Ruins are Grade 1 listed and provide a venue like no other, but there is no camping on-site. King Henry I started the construction of Reading Abbey in 1121 and it became one of the largest monasteries in Europe for some 400 years until its dissolution.

Performing artists will include elusive electronic art-rock outfit Snapped Ankles (following a sell-out UK tour and truly unique live experience) and multiinstrumental singer-songwriter LoneLady (Sky Arts nominee and a regular BBC Radio 6).

Leading the local charge are Reading’s five piece Adam & Elvis, Oxford’s dream folk musicians Catgod and acoustic duo Tomorrow Bird.

Live music with hundreds of years of history under your feet. A perfect combination and an event not to be missed! For tickets, visit: downattheabbey.co.uk

Tech Electric Scooters and the law If you are thinking about a quick trip on your new e-scooter to Theale High Street or a quick tour of Earley, you might want to be aware of the legal situation first because the only e-scooters that can be used on public roads are those rented as part of government-backed trials. If you own an e-scooter, you can use it on private land but not on public roads, cycle lanes or pavements. And yes, you can get points on your licence if you ride one on the road. The reason is that they are not currently classified the same as other electric transport. Take the bicycle: You can purchase an electric bicycle and ride that legally on the road. But electric scooters come under a different classification. They are recognised as powered transporters. This means that they fall under the same laws as other motor vehicles. You need tax, insurance, a driving licence, plates and lights. So if you own one and use it on a road, you can get points on your driving licence for offences like driving without insurance. No doubt over time they will be classified differently, but this is the current position.

8

Should you want to ride one, there are quite a few places that you can actually do that. The first thing to point out is that you need a driving licence with category Q on it. A provisional is sufficient and you are not required to have L plates. There are cities such as London, Bristol and Bath (currently 35 trials) where you can join a scheme usually with a mobile app and rent a scooter but it depends on the scheme. Helmets are not mandatory but be sensible, you really should be wearing one. Let’s cut to what fines and points could actually be applied. If you ride on the pavement it’s a £50 fine. If you use your mobile phone while using an electric scooter, that’s 6 points and £100 fine. And if you come back from the pub on one having been ‘on the sauce’ that’s not only questionable, it’s also a loss of your licence. We know there are mixed views on the benefits of this mode of transport. It’s good to be aware of the law as it currently stands and only time will tell if electric scooters become an accepted and popular mode of transport.

ow the entertaining, uplifting, genial tone of Anthony Joshua disguises a darker force which may yet lead him to even greater riches.

There’s something of a perversity and a contradiction where Anthony Joshua is concerned that means it’s difficult to fully comprehend the fact this is the greatest heavyweight boxing champion the UK has ever produced. The rationale for such a statement comes from the fact that AJ is charismatic; he’s polite, courteous, funny and unquestionably intelligent. Yet as many have commented in the past, there is something rather strange – a disconnect in fact – about how a nice guy goes around making a living by punching people in the face. “When you put it like that, it is unusual,” begins the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight boxing champ, with a wry smile. “As a kid

“It’s usually those towards the end of their careers who begin to feel like that, and with good reason. They say you know when your time is up, because it’s not necessarily the power and the physical ability that goes first, it’s your bottle.” AJ’s bottle is well and truly still intact, despite a challenging couple of years in the ring. First, in June 2019, there was his shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jnr, a result that few in the boxing world predicted, as the adopted American inflicted the champ’s first ever professional defeat. While the Brit exacted revenge to win back his belts in a rematch six months later, events had shown up a first chink in his armoury, and one that a resurgent Tyson Fury has been desperate to capitalise on ever since. I grew up wanting to be powerful and successful, but I guess that could have played itself out in many different ways. “However this is where I am and this is what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.” The 31-year-old admits most boxers become numb to the realities of what they do. “I think you have to,” he says. “Certainly those guys who go into the ring overthinking bad scenarios and danger are generally the ones who need to take a step back.

“Boxers will go through these episodes and it just so happened it was my turn back when I fought Andy Ruiz,” he says. “At the time it was the worst thing that had ever happened to me in the ring, but now I look back on it as a blessing. “I know I will never fail to prepare properly again; I know I’ll always respect every aspect of an opponent. Mostly though, I have proved to myself that I have the mental and physical resilience to power back from adversity when people all around you are questioning if you’ve still got it. You never know in the late rounds of a fight when that learned lesson could help me through to victory.” There’s a fair chance those echoes may come about when AJ gets his long-awaited shot at Tyson Fury. It’s the heavyweight boxing bout the world has been desperate to see, although despite hopes that the ultimate British showdown would happen in August, it now seems that Fury will have to again fight mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder, with Joshua taking on Ukrainian Alexander Usyk. Only when those two old foes are overcome will the fight everyone has been waiting for get the nod. “We’ve always said we’re willing to do it, but for a sport that’s really quite straightforward, it is riddled with politics and we’ve just got to play along with what the representatives say.

Beware – Inheritance Tax Bills Set to Rise

by Jeremy Jackson

I

t’s often said that of all the taxes we pay, inheritance tax (IHT) is one tax that is ‘optional’ in that there are a number of ways to reduce or eliminate it. Recent statistics released by HMRC reveal that inheritance tax receipts in April and May of this year were significantly higher than in the same two month period 12 months ago. Furthermore, full year IHT receipts were £5.32 billion - an increase of more than £204 million from the previous financial year. With the Chancellor freezing IHT bands until 2026 and with house prices booming, the trend of increasing IHT receipts for the Treasury is set to continue. If you are a homeowner living in the south of England then the biggest asset that counts towards inheritance tax is likely to be your home. There are potential schemes involving property trusts that could work to reduce IHT on death but this is a conversation with a property lawyer. On a very basic level, there are two key strategies that could help to reduce IHT: Firstly, you could take out a life assurance policy and place it in trust with the beneficiaries having access to a lump sum of money on death which can be used to pay the inheritance tax bill. This strategy is simple but for many is prohibitively expensive. Secondly, you could give away assets - either ‘piecemeal’ or via a lump sum investment. There are several gifting allowances

Make provision for the things you love (with a little help from us)

available which could be used annually to help out children and grandchildren. You could also gift ‘surplus’ income. For lump-sum investments, there are two common strategies – one involves investing into a lump sum investment and placing it into trust and the second involves investing in business relief qualifying assets. There are several different types of trust which could be used depending on the objectives - for example, helping with university fees, providing limited access to capital or paying a regular income. A less well known way to mitigate inheritance tax is to invest in a modern flexible personal pension plan (or SIPP). Funds in a personal pension fall outside the Estate for IHT purposes. This means that the pension fund can be passed on to a surviving spouse IHT free and if the surviving spouse were to die with funds left in the pot, then these funds can be passed on to children (or other nominated beneficiaries), again IHT free. Please be aware that many older pensions (pre 2016) do not permit the IHT flexibility outlined above. So, pensions can be a great way to save for retirement and a great way to leave wealth to loved ones. If you are concerned about inheritance tax and want to understand what strategy might be right for you and your family please get in touch.

PROTECTING YOUR LEGACY

Increase in financial abuse of the elderly and vulnerable I n the Contentious Probate Team at Rowberry Morris Solicitors, we see the immense problems caused by the lack of any or any up to date testamentary planning. We also see examples of human nature at its worst. From missing money, forged Powers of Attorney and forged Wills and Codicils to lengthy and damaging disputes between family members about the division of their deceased relative’s Estate. The financial abuse of older and vulnerable adults has become more prevalent over the years. Section 42 (3) of the Care Act 2014 defines abuse as including financial abuse, which includes:1 Having money or other property stolen. 2. Being defrauded. 3. Being put under pressure in relation to money or other property; and 4. Having money or other property misused. Sadly, these forms of abuse often happen within families. However, elderly and vulnerable people can suffer abuse from third parties too. This can take many forms such as tradesmen carrying out unnecessary or unduly expensive works or the hard selling of charitable donations.

eye Legal

By way of example, we have helped elderly and vulnerable clients who have: • Been mis sold multiple solar panel packages. • Had solar panels attached incorrectly to roofs facing away from the sun. • Had unnecessarily complex (and to them incomprehensible) security systems fitted. • Had repeated driveway resurfacing works; and • Signed up to so many monthly charity payments that they have been unable to make ends meet.

If you suspect or become aware that any elderly or vulnerable person might be victim of financial abuse, speak to them about it or speak to their family. If you think their family is involved, then raise it with Social Services or the Police. HOME STYLING Hello August August is a beautifully refreshing month. The weather is cooling down just a touch and we can feel the gentle breeze in the orange evenings. While the weather is still on our side, we have thought up some more garden ideas. Summer is not over just yet, so we want you to be able to make the most of that evening sunset!

A Funky Garden Mirror WOW When thinking of a garden mirror, you may think it sounds ridiculous and unnecessary, but this touch of vanity may be the best way to add the illusion of space and vibrancy to your outside living. A well-placed mirror can bounce the natural light into your dark corners and open up the space to fully breathe. The outdoor mirror is fast growing in popularity and can be purchased in many different shapes and sizes, so let your creativity fly. When placing your mirror, try to consider where you want the light to bounce off to. With the right placement, you’ll add a whole world of depth. Also try to consider flight paths, Birds are easily confused by mirrors and so hanging this feature next to your favourite bird feeder may not be the best shout!

Dried Flowers

Home

with Holly If you’re someone who likes to hold on to items of sentimental value, flowers can be an item to keep for longer periods of time than expected. Pressing flowers is a beautiful way to hold on to a memory and be displayed in your home. The joy that flowers bring do not have to have a time limit on them and also isn’t a hard craft to master. The easiest way to press flowers doesn’t involve any special equipment other than absorbent paper and a good heavy book. If the book is of value then make sure to use your absorbent paper to soak up any colour pigment that may run. It’s as easy as placing your chosen flowers in between the pages of your book and leaving to dry for at least one week. Once you have your dried flowers, you can get creative and display them in many different ways including framing. 14

Homemade Candles As the sky is turning golden in the evenings, why not give your inside living that golden glow too? Candles are easily the best way to give your home that comfy and cosy vibe. Filling your home with candles doesn’t have to be an expensive task. With a few supplies you can very easily make your own from home. There are endless varieties that can be created from home, but the three main ingredients to get started are: wax, a wick and a container. After you’ve got to grips with the basics, fragrance oils can be added and mixed to create your own scents. The lovely thing about this is that you have a very “uniquely yours” scent in your household. If you’re wanting to push the creative juices even further, dried flowers or colouring can also be placed in to really make your candle pop. Materials •Wax •Wick •Container •Fragrance (optional) •Colour (optional) •Skewers or Popsicle sticks

For fragrance oils visit: scentssoapsandcandles.co.uk

Dried Herbs Line Just like the dried flowers, dried herbs can be a magical looking process to add to the decoration of your home. As well a bringing in a scent that’s music to the senses. Using this method will enable you to bring in your summer herbs for year-long use. Making a DIY herbs rack requires few materials and is a very quick craft project. To make your herbs rack, you’ll want a measuring tape, level, long nose pliers, 2 wooden dowels, 4 gold hooks and a ball of twine or cotton string. Easy DIY instructions for this can be easily found online. 15

” N U H A Y “I’ll PM The Fisher This person routinely posts vague bits of information hinting at some big news or trauma but then says they can’t share more - either “ever” or “yet”. These posts are usually followed by a string of intrigued friends asking, “HOPE YOUR OK HUN..?” Firstly, it’s YOU’RE not YOUR...and secondly, please stop with the “I’ll PM YA HUN” replies to their concerns. It’s annoying. On Facebook or Twitter, the snippet could be a short “So excited!” or a simple cross faced emoji, or on Instagram, a photo of a hand or a selfie in profile. Engagement? Baby? Your house burned down? Stop fishin’ and tell us (or don’t tell us). Please, just don’t post something in between!

Drunk & Going Live As if posts and less than flattering pi**ed up pics were not enough, the introduction of live streaming on our social media platforms has given drunken nightrevellers (and all their connections) a real-time insight into their alcohol fuelled antics. Yikes! What did I say or do last night? That post-party HANGXIETY question needs never be asked again - we all saw your live stream, and it wasn’t pretty. Remember, some things simply can’t be unseen and chances are, your boss is on your friends list!

22

The *@#$er

Mr.Overshare

With this friend, you’re privy to every marital disagreement, selfdoubt, health issue (in all its gory detail) and financial problem. While it’s annoying to hear about someone whose life is seemingly perfect, the opposite is also true. It’s all about balance: sharing some of the good and some of the bad, being real and accessible but leaning to the positive. And this friend not only shares all his or her feelings but even all the personal details that are best left to private messages, like their address, phone number and birth date, all in an accessible public package.

If you aren’t one to curse in your posts, and it pains you to see bad language in your own news feed, it can be awkward to deal with - especially if it’s written by someone you know well. Asking nicely by private message that he or she cease and desist in using expletives in comments on your posts (because you have younger family members on your friends list) will normally resolve the issue. If it doesn’t, unfollow them, delete them or ‘take a break’.

It’s All Unicorns, Kittens & Rainbows Positivity is great. But when this friend only posts photos and messages that are over-the-top happy and seem to indicate her life is only awesome or more awesome, her marriage is amazing, her children never bother her or do wrong, and she seems to have everything she ever dreamed of and more, you really want to see a few posts admitting that sometimes life can be (gasp!) normal.

We repeat. Two people. Telling the entire digital world that “[insert boyfriend’s/ spouse’s name here] was texting [tag someone else’s name here] and I absolutely hate him. #SoOverIt is highly immature, And distasteful. Do you really need every person you have on your social media knowing what’s wrong with your love life? Same goes for ‘gushing’, so cool it with the endless snaps of the roses your man sent you, the gifts he buys you, or the updates about how

you’re the “luckiest girl in the world.” #boydonegood / #couplegoals It’s not only annoying, but it’s actually working against you: Studies have shown that people who brag about their relationships on Facebook are actually the most insecure about them. Apparently, the most healthy relationships are the ones with no sign of them on social media whatsoever!

Nom Nom Nom

No one cares what you had for breakfast. No one. Why are you telling people about mundane things like meals or the minutiae of your schedule? Maybe it’s loneliness. Maybe it’s narcissism. Maybe it’s just lack of thought. But whatever the reason, maybe it’s time to stop.

The Politico

It’s fair to say that there’s been a lot of important and often divisive issues dominating our headlines this year, and of course, everyone has their own perspective. But the constant rolling news updates have seen even the most nonpolitical among us suddenly tweeting, posting and sharing their views to Insta more about their favourite (or hated) ‘political personalities’ and topics than usual. But if your friend has suddenly turned into a political activist, and preaching dominates their daily postings, it’s probably time to hide their feed. For now anyway.

Bet You Wish You Were Here No we don’t. Period. Legs in the sand, pedicured toes in the sea… why is it always more appealing to get our holiday tootsies into that beach or pool snap? Truth is though, nobody really likes seeing those vague knees-up shots that are so

easily confused with tinned sausages. No one sitting at their desk on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Theale wants to know that you were one of the lucky ones who could afford a holiday this year - let alone see what a fabulous time you’re having sipping cocktails in Benidorm. Neither do we want to see every minute of your R&R in Zante whilst waiting in the queue to get into Asda.

When Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during his country's Euro 2020 game against Finland, he was quickly attended to by a medical team with full resuscitation equipment, who administered CPR and successfully used a defibrillator. Eriksen survived and has since been fitted with an implantable cardiac defibrillator, a small device which is connected to the heart and fitted under the skin. If a dangerously abnormal rhythm is detected, it will deliver an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. Christian Eriksen is a lucky man.

28

Whilst sudden cardiac arrests in sports people are rare, events like this can and do happen. In fact, it could happen to anyone at any time (obviously, risk factors will vary greatly depending on age and any pre-existing health conditions). This is why public venues will almost certainly have a good emergency plan in place to improve survival, including the widespread availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDS). But what about outside of a large venue? What about the area you live in? Would you know what to do if you stumbled across someone who you suspect of having a heart attack? Would you know where your nearest AED is located? If you believe a person has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and is unresponsive and not breathing, immediately ring either 999 or 112 and ask for the ambulance service. They will advise you on what action to take and either inform you where your nearest defibrillator is located or ask if you have a defibrillator. The operator will remain on the line and ask you a series of questions which should only take you a few moments and advise you on what steps to take to assist in emergency.

o

There have long been calls from leading charities and organisations to include lifesaving lessons on the educational curriculum. And rightly so. In countries where basic life support is taught in schools, survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest are significantly (two to three times) higher than those where it isn’t taught. With 80% of cardiac arrests occurring in the home in the UK, knowing what to do could be the difference between life and death for someone you care about. But if you found yourself in a situation where you suspect someone’s heart has stopped, or may be having a heart attack, would you know the signs or what to do? Remember, doing nothing will almost certainly mean that the patient will die, so intervention with even the most basic of knowledge is better than nothing. We’ve found a great two minute video on YouTube which explains perfectly just how easy CPR is to perform. Watch it now, it may just save someone’s life one day! www.resus.org.uk/watch

Successful Community Responder schemes have been running in Earley, Lower Earley, Shinfield, Swallowfield, Burghfield, Mortimer and Tadley for nearly fifteen years - and the success of these initiatives is down to the local people who volunteer their time to keep them operational.

Community Responders

Sudden cardiac arrests happen every day, many of them out of hospital. In the UK, just one in ten people survive. One day, you might witness someone collapse and stop breathing in your home or when you’re out in public – and you could be the only person there who can help them.

If you are lucky enough to live next to an ambulance station, it is likely that an ambulance crew would be with you in double quick time. But many of us live in suburbs and villages and getting a crew to you may take a little longer. When you dial 999 and an ambulance is despatched to a life-threatening emergency, a local Community First Responder will also be despatched at the same time if you live in a suburb or village. (If there is somebody available,) Responders are volunteers (ordinary folk like you and I), who are trained by the ambulance service to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work. The aim is to have a Responder reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives.

South Central Ambulance Service are always looking for members of the public to step forward and join them. Anyone can become a Community First Responder but you must: • • •

• • •

Be physically fit. Be aged between 18-70. Agree to a disclosure and barring service check. (DBS). This was previously known as criminal records bureau disclosure or CRB. Have a sympathetic, caring nature. Be willing to undertake training. Have a full driving licence and access to a road worthy car.

Community Responders can choose when they put themselves ‘on-call’ and commit to as few or as many hours as they are able to offer. If you would like to know more about becoming a responder, please visit: www.scas.nhs.uk/ourservices/community-and-coresponders or call 01962 898090 or email cfr@scas.nhs.uk for an application pack

Their role is to help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care until the more highly skilled ambulance crew arrives on scene to take over the treatment.

At the Black Widow

Flicks

The Marvel cannon keeps on firing with yet another highly satisfying instalment. This time it’s the origin story of Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson. Raised in a surrogate family in mid 90s Ohio that turns out to be a mysterious Russian sleeper cell Natasha ends up defecting to Shield before being reunited with her sister and parents

to topple psychotic Red Army boss Dreykov (Ray Winstone). Although this spy thriller has all the usual Avenger style crash bang wallops, it’s the comedic and dramatic interplay between this dysfunctional family that makes it. Particularly between Natasha and her squabbling younger assassin sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), and their wannabe Captain America father Alexei (David Harbour).

The perfect antidote to the ponderous and heavy dramas of the awards season, this gender swap teen slasher horror/comedy is just what the doctor ordered. When Vince Vaughn as serial killer ‘The Butcher’ lets loose on the local high school, things take a wrong turn when he is about to do away with the school misfit Millie (Kathryn Newton). Just as

Another Round

Based on the studies of a real-life scientist, this comedy drama tells the story of four Danish teachers who conduct an experiment to test if low level daily alcohol consumption can boost their creativity, performance and social skills both at home and work.

his ancient dagger strikes her their spirit gets swapped triggering the flipping of roles where our misfit teenager takes on the mind of a killer and The Butcher becomes a timid and terrified teenager. Vaughn is close to his comedic best here supported by a great newcomer performance in Newton and we get just the right amount of gore and guffaws to keep you gripped to the grizzly end.

After seeing immediate benefits the group steadily up the stakes leading to hilarity and heartbreak in equal measure, and throughout it all you never know quite where the experiment will end. This is an intoxicating cocktail of a movie well worthy of it’s Best International Film Oscar, and an absolute masterclass performance from lead actor Mads Mikkelsen.

In her usual delightfully relaxed and upbeat style, local author Poppy Field’s collection of light-hearted stories about several weird and wonderful episodes in her life is guaranteed to induce a giggle or two. From the day-to-day quandaries of a middle-aged, bingo-loving, accident-prone, hot-tub-dipping, sweet-fanatic mother, her continuous battle with her weight (and frustrations with Fat Clubs!) to living between two homes (one in the Isle of Wight where she’s now taken up permanent residence), redundancy when she was least expecting it, and a very Sober October to raise money for Macmillan in memory of her dear late friend – this book will capture your heart and mind throughout. Along with her love and pride for her close-knit family, and an abundance of hilarious moments that will literally have you laughing out loud, the gregarious author also reflects on some poignant and sad times in her life that will resonate with anyone who has ever been in a similar position. Written for the reader to dip in and out of, this entertaining book will brighten up any dark day, time and time again. Guaranteed to bring a smile to even the grumpiest of faces.

MEET THREE MILE CROSS ARTIST

Move over Matisse and step aside Picasso. The area has its own abstract artist.... And it turns out, he’s rather good! After a successful showcase last year, Mortimer Cafe has once again offered its wall space to a local artist, Lachezar (Leo) Zarkov, to display his creations, creating an art gallery within the cafe. Not only can you enjoy looking at this beautiful art while you sip your cappuccino, you can also purchase the artwork, too. With the recent renewed enthusiasm for the nation to ‘buy local’ and support local businesses,

why not pop in for some food and drink, browse the collection and treat someone - or yourself? Leo is also a commission based artist and creates abstract art that can match your interior. Clients can either send him pictures of their room or office space or, if preferred, Leo is also very happy visit them. Once he has a feel for the colour scheme (cushions, curtains, chandeliers, carpets, accent ornaments or whatever is in the room), he is able to work his magic! If you want to have a chat with Leo about purchasing any of his artwork or commissioning a piece, please call him on 07500 772183 lzarkart

“What exercise is best

for getting rid of my

BINGO WINGS? and other commonly asked questions ”

WHAT EXERCISE IS BEST FOR GETTING RID OF MY BINGO WINGS? When we’re talking about “bingo wings”, we’re talking about the triceps muscle on the back and underneath of the upper arm. There’s no one best exercise for this area because different parts of the muscle are more or less active depending on what exercise you’re using. If you pick just one exercise, you’re going to get disappointing results, so using a variety of exercises for this area is going to be more effective than looking for the “best” one. That doesn’t mean you should Overhead triceps do something exercises are great for bingo wings, but should random each be avoided if you have time you train high blood pressure though, random workouts produce random results. Choosing exercises that work the triceps from different angles and are progressed over time is the key to best results. DO I NEED TO USE A PROTEIN SUPPLEMENT? Protein supplements only help you build muscle or recover from exercise if your diet is already deficient in protein. If you’re already

getting enough protein to meet your needs from the food you’re eating, then adding a protein shake won’t improve your results. There’s an upper limit to how much protein our body can use, and if we take on more than we need, the rest is broken down by our bodies and part of it goes down the toilet, with the rest being stored as body fat-the opposite of what most people want from their workouts! Some supplements have also been found to be tainted by stimulants and steroids despite claiming to have been tested by an independent laboratory. Real food doesn’t have this drawback, so focus on food first. HOW CAN I TONE MY STOMACH UP? The most important thing to understand about your mid-section is that doing stomach exercises doesn’t burn stomach fat, it just works the muscles lying underneath. The best approach is to use a whole-body approach rather than focusing on the stomach in isolation. A full body workout done well can elevate your metabolism for up to two days after the workout-meaning

your body is burning more calories even when you’re not exercising. Working the whole body will achieve much more than marathon workouts that just focus on the stomach area. Making sure that you’re eating healthily is also important as this will ensure that every workout is moving you forward, whereas if you’re not eating healthily, you’ll be using your workouts to play catch up, which makes things much harder.
