BURGHFIELD’S ON THE BALL Burghfield Football Club were delighted and relieved when they had confirmation back in June that their highly-regarded summer tournament could still take place this year despite the Government’s decision to delay the easing of all lockdown restrictions until mid-July. The tournament, sponsored by David Cliff, went ahead as planned on 3rd/4th July at Burghfield CSA following confirmation that it had been officially sanctioned by Berks & Bucks FA. The health and safety of all those attending was of paramount importance to the club, so they put in place a number of adaptions to ensure that it was as Covid secure as possible. And once the announcement was made, places were soon sold out, with over 200 teams registered to take part in this popular seeded tournament. Teams ranged from the under 7s right up to under 16s, as well as ladies and mens teams, too. All the major leagues in Berkshire and the surrounding counties were represented, which provided a great opportunity for teams to play against some new and unfamiliar sides as well as some old friends too.

With 8 pitches hosting one match after the other in the group stages and then more games for the knock-out stages of each age group, there was constant football all day Saturday and all day Sunday. There were presentation ceremonies and trophies for those teams who won and came runners up in their age group, and catering on-site, too. It really was a huge event to coordinate and everything ran smoothly. The atmosphere was electric with each team well-supported by family and friends, all experiencing the highs and lows of tournament football together, with excruciating penalty shoot outs and hilarious goal celebrations - from all age groups! What a fantastic weekend of football. The club would like to say a massive thank you to all the teams that competed, the sponsors who supported and the volunteers who gave their time to make the tournament a huge success. IN MEMORY OF KATE

Back in June, Mortimer Cricket Club hosted a hugely successful charity cricket match in memory of Kate Cox, beloved wife of club member Craig Cox. As well as the cricket, there was food, drinks, raffles, prizes, and a chance to raise a glass and remember Kate. Kate received care from Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in her final weeks earlier this year and, as a mark of Craig’s heartfelt appreciation, profits from the day will be donated to the hospice. More than £3,000 was raised for Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent House, which is the equivalent to funding a nurse for 22 days, thanks to the massive generosity of those who attended from near and far and those who made donations. Kate’s husband, Craig, would like to thank all the organisers for staging such a magnificent event, and to the players and spectators who made it such a special day.

SINGING FOR DYLAN A virtual choir, VoxSonix, usually based in Newbury and Tadley, has been spreading some positivity and raising money for a cause close to their hearts. They have recorded a video version of The Beatles’ song ‘Here Comes the Sun’ in memory of Dylan Milsom, the three-year-old boy who died after falling into the Kennet and Avon Canal in March. Money raised by the song has been donated to Chieveley PreSchool, which Dylan attended, for their outdoor play area. Dylan’s mother, Shelley Nardini, is a member of VoxSonix and suggested fundraising for the pre-school. The choir, which was founded by Kat Penn, recorded their own videos and vocals, which were then pulled together by Kat. Dylan’s pre-school friends also got involved, singing the opening lines to the song. More than 80 people joined in the vocals, with around 70 people videoed in small groups in the sunshine or singing from home. Kat said, “The singers have really pushed themselves out of their comfort zone. They have really got behind the positivity

of the whole thing. Shelley has said that Dylan was such a ray of sunshine in their lives and she loves it.” Unbelievably, within 24 hours of the video’s launch last week, more than £1,000 had already been raised, which sees the preschool’s fundraising target reached already! What a result. Congratulations to Kat and the choir for raising so much money for such a good cause in memory of Dylan.

Then we remembered that this isn’t the first time that Niamh has had her hair cut off for charity - she’s done it TWICE before! Yes, this is the third time that local school girl, Niamh O’Brien, is donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young adults, who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. Not only does Niamh look great with her new, shorter style, her hair donation will be used in real-hair wigs for children with cancer. Well done, Niamh.

Get Saturday September 11th in your diary and get ready for Down at the Abbey! This independent music festival is returning to the stunning location of Reading Abbey Ruins for a spectacular one day festival, thanks to creators Heavy Pop Promotions.

The Utopia Strong, who are headlining the second stage, features ex-World Snooker Champion Steve Davis!

You may already be familiar with Heavy Pop because they are also the creators behind the popular Are You Listening? Festival, a one day music festival in Reading that has raised over £70,000 for local learning disability charity Reading Mencap since it began in 2013.

The award-winning Siren Craft Brew will be running the main Festival Bar, and there will be a number of pop-up bars and mouth-watering food stalls to please festival goers on the day. There will be kids activities, too, to keep the little ones entertained.

The Ruins are illuminated when darkness falls, creating one of the most spectacular event spaces in the UK. There are great transport links, too. The festival site is less than five minutes’ walk from Reading Station and well connected for buses, too.

The Ruins are Grade 1 listed and provide a venue like no other, but there is no camping on-site. King Henry I started the construction of Reading Abbey in 1121 and it became one of the largest monasteries in Europe for some 400 years until its dissolution.

When Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during his country's Euro 2020 game against Finland, he was quickly attended to by a medical team with full resuscitation equipment, who administered CPR and successfully used a defibrillator. Eriksen survived and has since been fitted with an implantable cardiac defibrillator, a small device which is connected to the heart and fitted under the skin. If a dangerously abnormal rhythm is detected, it will deliver an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. Christian Eriksen is a lucky man.

Whilst sudden cardiac arrests in sports people are rare, events like this can and do happen. In fact, it could happen to anyone at any time (obviously, risk factors will vary greatly depending on age and any pre-existing health conditions). This is why public venues will almost certainly have a good emergency plan in place to improve survival, including the widespread availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDS). But what about outside of a large venue? What about the area you live in? Would you know what to do if you stumbled across someone who you suspect of having a heart attack? Would you know where your nearest AED is located? If you believe a person has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and is unresponsive and not breathing, immediately ring either 999 or 112 and ask for the ambulance service. They will advise you on what action to take and either inform you where your nearest defibrillator is located or ask if you have a defibrillator. The operator will remain on the line and ask you a series of questions which should only take you a few moments and advise you on what steps to take to assist in emergency.

There have long been calls from leading charities and organisations to include lifesaving lessons on the educational curriculum. And rightly so. In countries where basic life support is taught in schools, survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest are significantly (two to three times) higher than those where it isn’t taught. With 80% of cardiac arrests occurring in the home in the UK, knowing what to do could be the difference between life and death for someone you care about. But if you found yourself in a situation where you suspect someone’s heart has stopped, or may be having a heart attack, would you know the signs or what to do? Remember, doing nothing will almost certainly mean that the patient will die, so intervention with even the most basic of knowledge is better than nothing. Sudden cardiac arrests happen every day, many of them out of hospital. In the UK, just one in ten people survive. One day, you might witness someone collapse and stop breathing in your home or when you’re out in public – and you could be the only person there who can help them.

If you are lucky enough to live next to an ambulance station, it is likely that an ambulance crew would be with you in double quick time. But many of us live in suburbs and villages and getting a crew to you may take a little longer. When you dial 999 and an ambulance is despatched to a life-threatening emergency, a local Community First Responder will also be despatched at the same time if you live in a suburb or village. (If there is somebody available,) Responders are volunteers (ordinary folk like you and I), who are trained by the ambulance service to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work. The aim is to have a Responder reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives.

South Central Ambulance Service are always looking for members of the public to step forward and join them. Anyone can become a Community First Responder but you must: • • •

Be physically fit. Be aged between 18-70. Agree to a disclosure and barring service check. (DBS). This was previously known as criminal records bureau disclosure or CRB. Have a sympathetic, caring nature. Be willing to undertake training. Have a full driving licence and access to a road worthy car.

Community Responders can choose when they put themselves ‘on-call’ and commit to as few or as many hours as they are able to offer. There’s something of a perversity and a contradiction where Anthony Joshua is concerned that means it’s difficult to fully comprehend the fact this is the greatest heavyweight boxing champion the UK has ever produced. The rationale for such a statement comes from the fact that AJ is charismatic; he’s polite, courteous, funny and unquestionably intelligent. Yet as many have commented in the past, there is something rather strange – a disconnect in fact – about how a nice guy goes around making a living by punching people in the face. “When you put it like that, it is unusual,” begins the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight boxing champ, with a wry smile. “As a kid

You never know in the late rounds of a fight when that learned lesson could help me through to victory.” There’s a fair chance those echoes may come about when AJ gets his long-awaited shot at Tyson Fury. It’s the heavyweight boxing bout the world has been desperate to see, although despite hopes that the ultimate British showdown would happen in August, it now seems that Fury will have to again fight mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder, with Joshua taking on Ukrainian Alexander Usyk. Only when those two old foes are overcome will the fight everyone has been waiting for get the nod. “We’ve always said we’re willing to do it, but for a sport that’s really quite straightforward, it is riddled with politics and we’ve just got to play along with what the representatives say.

The outdoor mirror is fast growing in popularity and can be purchased in many different shapes and sizes, so let your creativity fly. When placing your mirror, try to consider where you want the light to bounce off to. With the right placement, you’ll add a whole world of depth. Also try to consider flight paths, Birds are easily confused by mirrors and so hanging this feature next to your favourite bird feeder may not be the best shout!

If the book is of value then make sure to use your absorbent paper to soak up any colour pigment that may run. Once you have your dried flowers, you can get creative and display them in many different ways including framing. 20

Homemade Candles As the sky is turning golden in the evenings, why not give your inside living that golden glow too? Candles are easily the best way to give your home that comfy and cosy vibe. Filling your home with candles doesn’t have to be an expensive task. With a few supplies you can very easily make your own from home. There are endless varieties that can be created from home, but the three main ingredients to get started are: wax, a wick and a container. After you’ve got to grips with the basics, fragrance oils can be added and mixed to create your own scents. The lovely thing about this is that you have a very “uniquely yours” scent in your household. If you’re wanting to push the creative juices even further, dried flowers or colouring can also be placed in to really make your candle pop. Increase in financial abuse of the elderly and vulnerable I n the Contentious Probate Team at Rowberry Morris Solicitors, we see the immense problems caused by the lack of any or any up to date testamentary planning. We also see examples of human nature at its worst. From missing money, forged Powers of Attorney and forged Wills and Codicils to lengthy and damaging disputes between family members about the division of their deceased relative’s Estate. The financial abuse of older and vulnerable adults has become more prevalent over the years. Section 42 (3) of the Care Act 2014 defines abuse as including financial abuse, which includes:1 Having money or other property stolen. 2. Being defrauded. 3. Being put under pressure in relation to money or other property; and 4. Having money or other property misused. Sadly, these forms of abuse often happen within families. However, elderly and vulnerable people can suffer abuse from third parties too. This can take many forms such as tradesmen carrying out unnecessary or unduly expensive works or the hard selling of charitable donations.

Beware – Inheritance Tax Bills Set to Rise

t’s often said that of all the taxes we pay, inheritance tax (IHT) is one tax that is ‘optional’ in that there are a number of ways to reduce or eliminate it. Recent statistics released by HMRC reveal that inheritance tax receipts in April and May of this year were significantly higher than in the same two month period 12 months ago. Furthermore, full year IHT receipts were £5.32 billion - an increase of more than £204 million from the previous financial year. With the Chancellor freezing IHT bands until 2026 and with house prices booming, the trend of increasing IHT receipts for the Treasury is set to continue. If you are a homeowner living in the south of England then the biggest asset that counts towards inheritance tax is likely to be your home. There are potential schemes involving property trusts that could work to reduce IHT on death but this is a conversation with a property lawyer. On a very basic level, there are two key strategies that could help to reduce IHT: Firstly, you could take out a life assurance policy and place it in trust with the beneficiaries having access to a lump sum of money on death which can be used to pay the inheritance tax bill. This strategy is simple but for many is prohibitively expensive. Secondly, you could give away assets - either ‘piecemeal’ or via a lump sum investment. There are several gifting allowances

available which could be used annually to help out children and grandchildren. You could also gift ‘surplus’ income. For lump-sum investments, there are two common strategies – one involves investing into a lump sum investment and placing it into trust and the second involves investing in business relief qualifying assets. There are several different types of trust which could be used depending on the objectives - for example, helping with university fees, providing limited access to capital or paying a regular income. A less well known way to mitigate inheritance tax is to invest in a modern flexible personal pension plan (or SIPP). Funds in a personal pension fall outside the Estate for IHT purposes. This means that the pension fund can be passed on to a surviving spouse IHT free and if the surviving spouse were to die with funds left in the pot, then these funds can be passed on to children (or other nominated beneficiaries), again IHT free. Please be aware that many older pensions (pre 2016) do not permit the IHT flexibility outlined above. So, pensions can be a great way to save for retirement and a great way to leave wealth to loved ones. Tech Electric Scooters and the law If you are thinking about a quick trip on your new e-scooter to Theale High Street or a quick tour of Earley, you might want to be aware of the legal situation first because the only e-scooters that can be used on public roads are those rented as part of government-backed trials. If you own an e-scooter, you can use it on private land but not on public roads, cycle lanes or pavements. And yes, you can get points on your licence if you ride one on the road. The reason is that they are not currently classified the same as other electric transport. Take the bicycle: You can purchase an electric bicycle and ride that legally on the road. But electric scooters come under a different classification. They are recognised as powered transporters. This means that they fall under the same laws as other motor vehicles. You need tax, insurance, a driving licence, plates and lights. So if you own one and use it on a road, you can get points on your driving licence for offences like driving without insurance. No doubt over time they will be classified differently, but this is the current position.

Should you want to ride one, there are quite a few places that you can actually do that. The first thing to point out is that you need a driving licence with category Q on it. A provisional is sufficient and you are not required to have L plates. There are cities such as London, Bristol and Bath (currently 35 trials) where you can join a scheme usually with a mobile app and rent a scooter but it depends on the scheme. Helmets are not mandatory but be sensible, you really should be wearing one. Let’s cut to what fines and points could actually be applied. If you ride on the pavement it’s a £50 fine. If you use your mobile phone while using an electric scooter, that’s 6 points and £100 fine. And if you come back from the pub on one having been ‘on the sauce’ that’s not only questionable, it’s also a loss of your licence. We know there are mixed views on the benefits of this mode of transport. It’s good to be aware of the law as it currently stands and only time will tell if electric scooters become an accepted and popular mode of transport.

The village of Silchester is most well-known for its Roman Walls and Amphitheatre. The Roman walls are considered to be the most well-preserved Roman walls in Great Britain. The University of Reading’s Town Life Project excavations took place over a number of years, exploring the area, from its Iron Age origins to the end of the Roman occupation of the town.

Up next we have the old Silchester post office which many of you will recognise and The Clock at Silchester House. Silchester House is a Victorian mansion located in the village. The west wing of the house dates back to the 17th century. Until recently, it was available to hire as a delightful wedding venue

To kick off our Silchester piece, we have two photos of the inside of the Church of England parish church, St Mary the Virgin, located within the walls of the old Roman town. This building dates back to the late 12th century and still stands today,
