SYDNEY

C

osmopolitan Sydney, with its beautiful port and a relaxed life-style, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Sydney is the largest Australian city, the nation’s economic powerhouse and Australia’s capital city in everything but the name. This city vibrates with energy and offers everything someone could ask for from a destination: the most beautiful port in the world crossed by an equally amazing bridge (known as The Coathanger), the famous Opera House, a pleasant climate, godly beaches for surf, a multitude of restaurants and bars that vibrate with nightlife. Sydney is blessed with a soft climate, the temperature rarely falls under 10 degrees C over night, with an average of 25C in the summer and over 300 sunny days a year. The winters are rather cool then cold.

MELBOURNE

D

espite the fact that it’s Continental Australia’s smallest state (aprox. the size of Great Britain), Victoria has a lot to offer. It’s a place of contrasts, beaches and mountains, desert and forests, volcanic fields and huge farms. The city of Melbourne, Victoria’s capital city, has been inhabited ever since 1830 by Europeans. Melbourne produces one of the most innovative arts, music, food, fashion, shows, design and culture in Australia. “Melbournians”, love to shop, eat and take part in countless shows this city has to offer to their inhabitants. The characteristic that defines Melbourne is its cultural diversity. Approximately 40% of the city’s population was born overseas, originating in over 130 countries. And let’s not forget about Melbourne’s coffee culture. If you like coffee, this is the city where you want to be.

BRISBANE

W

ith a population of 2 million people and over 1100 people moving here every week, Brisbane is considered to be Australia’s fastest developing city in the last decade. Brisbane is home to over 80 000 international students from over 40 different countries. Their number doubled in the last 4 years. Approximate 80% of them chose Brisbane as their study destination in the state of Queensland. Temperature in the southern part of Queensland rarely falls under 20C. Brisbane has a reputation of being one of the most progressive cities in Australia. With a massive academic culture and an economy based on knowledge, combined with one of the most envied lifestyles, Brisbane is one of the cities international students should put on top of their lists when it comes to studying in Australia.

PERTH

H

ave you ever heard the expression “bigger than Texas”? Well, this one applies to Western Australia. You could fit Texas in Western Australia and still have room for New Zealand. The state has 12 000kms of beach and more animal and plant species than the whole world put together. The city of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, has a long and hot summer with temperatures constantly over 30C, especially in January and February. The predominant culture in Perth is an outdoor one. It seems like more and more “Perthians” are devoted to a hobby that involves an outdoor activity such as swimming, surfing, fishing or sunbathing. Perth has an important artistic community as well.

10

ADELAIDE

W

hen the first colonists arrived here, they used stone in their buildings. They wanted to build a solid and respected city, a civilized and calm place to a level no Australian city can reach. If you ask someone from another large Australian city what they know about Adelaide, they will tell you that it is the city of churches. These days it is more than that. Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and cool winters. A vibrant population of students assures you there is a lot you can do in this city especially for those on a budget. Adelaide is smaller than Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane but offers the same lifestyle and quality education – for a smaller cost. Statistics show that cost of living in Sydney is 24% higher than Adelaide, Melbourne’s cost of living is 21% higher and Perth’s and Brisbane’s cost of living is 9% higher than Adelaide.

GOLD COAST

F

amous Gold Coast has the best of Australia in the smallest details. Gold Coast offers a large selections of beaches, subtropical forests, theme parks, nightlife, shopping and attractions in an extremely accessible destination. Gold Coast is a unique city, and one of the best places in the world for holiday and studies. Large enough to satisfy the most demanding tastes but small enough to insure the visitor of the smallest details, Gold Coast is the ideal destination for studies, entertainment and business. From the iconic Surfers Paradise to the sophisticated restaurants, a new experience awaits you at every corner in Gold Coast.

options

An Australian qualification can have a significant impact on your life, adding new skills and knowledge that can boost your career or give you a new direction in life. In a competitive job market, it is time to obtain an advantage that a course in Australia can offer.

ENGLISH If your level of English needs to be improved before starting a course or you want to study English language for different reasons, an English language course in a native speaking country like Australia can help. Australia offers a variety of specialised English courses. You can study these courses in any of Australia’s largest cities or in a quieter, more exotic places: Noosa, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, etc…

HIGHER EDUCATION Undergraduate courses are based in essence on theory and represent the first professional qualification at an academic level. The typical course that falls under this category is the Bachelor degree with a duration of 3 or 4 years depending on the major. It can also last for 2 years if the fast-track option is used. The typical courses that fall under the Postgraduate category are the Postgraduate courses.

VET A relevant characteristic of the VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses is, they tend to focus more on developing practical skills in a certain occupation, while the Higher Education courses focus more on theory and professional development. VET courses are different from the Higher Education because they are practical courses, with a shorter duration and a lower cost and offer a lower qualification than Higher Education courses (Bachelor degrees, Master degrees, etc…).

RESEARCH Courses that fall in this category are the Master or PhD courses that have at least a third of the studies based on research and no more than one third of theory. The typical courses for this category are the Master (by Research) – different from the Mast (by Coursework) – and the PhD or doctorate courses. International students that study these courses and their dependents will receive full work rights for the duration of their stay in Australia.

esearch courses in Australia refer to those courses, which have more than 66% of study based on research. In this field you can commonly find two programs: Master (by Research) and PhD (Doctoral degree). A research program in Australia will help you develop certain transferable skills and a qualification that will contribute to your success in any field you chose. A Master (by Research) qualification is granted by a university to a student who brought an original contribution to a field of study in a 2 years full-time study. Usually, a no more than 50 000 words thesis will be required to show the research findings. The qualification of Doctor is granted following a substantial contribution to a field of study in a 2 or 4 years of full-time research. In both cases, Master (by Research) or PhD, the programs include certain theoretical parts, but the main activity is focused on Research.
