If people did not love one another, I really don’t see what use there would be in having any Spring. Victor Hugo

Spring; the most beautiful reminder of rebirth and renewal, the season that brings love, hope, youth, and growth. While we’re still living in partial restrictions and lockdowns, it seems like Mother Nature has been more than generous with sunny and warm weather, beautiful blue skies, and double digits’ forecasts. In this edition, we connected with some very inspirational Edmontonians. A conversation with Chevi Rabbit was uplifting as her positive energy and drive came through her every word. Her story is one of strength, resistance and perseverance, and we admire her ongoing journey and pursuit of justice for all. In the style department, we are pleased to bring you the unique, razor-sharp fashion of the renaissance man, Dr. Manfred Zeuch, Vice President at Concordia University of Edmonton. He not only puts together elegant, carefully constructed outfits, but also has an extraordinary hobby of perfume-making. Another style figure, Sarah Ward, opens the doors of the styling space at West Edmonton Mall and lets us take a peek into her own closet. Head golf pro at Blackhawk Golf Club, Kevin Chow, shares his love and passion for golf, as we get excited that soon we can bring our A-game to the great golf courses in the city.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY WEI WONG

In this edition, our team had the great privilege to work with two of our city’s top photographers and artists, Wei Wong and Dale McMillan. We’re thrilled to bring you their work, and also to feature the city portrait through Wei’s lens. In describing the image, Wei says, “I wanted to capture Edmonton’s ever-changing city skyline. With the new Walterdale Bridge, the lit-up High Level Bridge, and the construction of the new Stantec Tower in view, I think it's a great representation and snapshot of what our city is like: in a constant state of transition and revitalization. This is YEG.”

LIVING HER TRUE SELF WORDS BY JELENA BOJIC PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TSOI, MODEL CHEVI RABBIT

On a mission to educate, reconcile and bring equality – a conversation with Chevi Rabbit Growing up in the most loving family and community, never facing discrimination and unfairness in their early years, Chevi learned that their childhood was unconventional and not something that every child experiences. Surrounded by an affectionate family and friends, and never bullied for being different, Chevi lived her life in a ‘bubble’ as she calls it until a malicious burst happened when she went to university. Suffering aggression by several males who attacked her for being different, Chevi went through a painful period of her life. Not only did she have to process and deal with the violence, but she experienced a shocking realization that people like her can face serious aggression and inequality in the world.

participation for Indigenous communities and equity in those communities. I grew up seeing the benefits of the oil and gas industry, so I continue to support it as I believe there are benefits related to employment and prosperity for these communities. What is the most rewarding part of this journey for you? Helping marginalized communities and assisting people who are without a voice. At the core of everything I do, I recognize that the groups I represent don’t have a seat at the table, and are often ignored by society. I think about the future of Indigenous youth such as my niece Ceejay Courtright. She’s been coming to the rally since she was 7, meeting and speaking to politicians and various women’s rights’ activists. As she’s now at the age where she’ll be attending post-secondary education in Edmonton, it gives me a bit of anxiety because of my own experiences, but I know I did my part so that the next generations of Albertans can live a better life. Tell us more about the ‘Hate to Hope’ rally? What are its missions and vision, and how do you hope it will address today’s concerns and challenges for marginalized groups? Hate to Hope is more than a rally; it’s a public awareness campaign with the strong support of all levels of government. For the past decade, we’ve been able to bring together marginalized groups and focus on cultural bullying, systemic discrimination, and raise awareness of hate and discrimination in our province. Issues such as homelessness, unemployment, and lack of support for Indigenous or LGBT businesses are discussed, and we’ve been fortunate to have City Council, Provincial MLAs and Members of Parliament attend year after year. Over the last 12 months, the pandemic has exasperated all social conditions across the board, so marginalized and underrepresented groups are feeling the pressure. www.modernluxuria.com

Now, tell us about your interest in make-up and fashion, what draws you to that and what do you enjoy the most? Makeup has always been a fun way to express who I am as an individual. After graduating from Marvel College, I worked with a number of prestigious makeup brands, and had a great freelancing career. I got involved with the Western Canada Fashion Week which introduced me to the world of fashion, bringing back memories of growing up with my mom and aunt who managed an Arts and Crafts store in Montana First Nation. Today, I consider many designers and makeup artists my close friends, and when I was assaulted, my fashion community offered incredible support. However, in recent years, makeup has taken a back seat, as my interests in advocacy are strong; I’ve been involved in the last four elections as a Campaign Manager and Chief Financial Officer. How do you bring forward components of Indigenous culture into your style? Watching fabulous women in my family, such as my late aunt Rema Rabbit has had a great impact on me. She was one of the first elected females in Maskwacis during a time that was very male-dominant. Another late aunt, Vema Cattleman, whose husband was the longest-serving Chief, had the title of the First Lady of Montana. These amazing women, along with my mom and my kokum, made a real impression on me and how I viewed Indigenous style and culture as I was surrounded by strong and wonderful women. Your signature clothing piece is? My ribbon skirt. It’s a sign of cultural resiliency and female empowerment, deeply rooted in our history. My ribbon skirt represents the rights of transgender Cree women, gender diverse communities, and Indigenous culture. A Renaissance Man “Trends are not of interest to me. It’s my own style; I can find things anywhere.” — Manfred Zeuch

Manfred Zeuch is the principal conductor of his curiously orchestrated life. From birth, music and art filled his soul, a cerebral symphony to be performed and studied. Born in Guatemala, raised in Brazil and holding a PhD from the University of Strasbourg, France, his worldly experiences unveiled an appreciation for everything aesthetically pleasing with an attentiveness to the way people dress. His influences run deep in the 18th century. There’s a respect for the long waistcoat, linen ruffled shirts, bold colours and of course, ‘un foulard’ (scarf). For Manfred Zeuch, it remains important to keep true to oneself. “Trends are not of interest to me. It’s my own style; I can find things anywhere. It’s about how I feel in my clothes.”

This Renaissance Man can be seen enjoying the spoils of nature with one crucial fashion accessory, his walking stick. Zeuch enthusiastically shares that there was a culture associated with canes. They were used not out of necessity but as a symbol of wealth and refinement. A gentleman had to procure licenses for the privilege of carrying canes. For Zeuch, it’s about exploring new terrain. Life is never boring, especially when your wardrobe pieces are as eclectic as your hobbies. ▶

Inspired by his wife’s interest in essential oils, Zeuch zealously dove into the art of perfumery. Travelling to Grasse, France in 2018, he received his diploma from the House of Galimard. A maestro, he developed his signature scent, Route du Soleil. “It’s a composition, a delicate selection of notes, a harmony. There is no gender in perfume.” He continues to make dozens of new configurations with a variety of aromatic notes inspired by travel and nature. “When I taste something, I don’t necessarily want to look up the recipe. I think - I will do this on my own. It’s the same with smell, I recreate that afterwards.” ▶

During her university days, she got involved with the University of Alberta’s School of Retailing, which helped land her first position with Kingsway Mall’s marketing team. Falling in love with the retail world, Sarah continued to pursue opportunities in shopping centres and joined the marketing team at West Edmonton Mall, where she currently works as the Retail Marketing Manager. As a born and raised Edmontonian, Sarah appreciates the foundation that WEM represents in the city when it comes to fashion, and loves connecting with retailers - from small, independent shops to world-renowned brands such as the upcoming Saint Laurent and Gucci. Her style is certainly influenced by the creative fashion-Shangri-La she finds herself in daily. After all, mall walks are a part of the job. Always evolving, her approach includes classic and modern staples, paired with unique statement pieces; she loves finding uncommon items with a fun twist. Sarah’s style carries notes of bohemian undertones, paired with signature bangs and winged eyeliner, and always accessorized with a smile.

Talking about her top three items, the first on the list are shoes. “I am notoriously known for owning more pairs of shoes than I can count and have a spare room in my house that is affectionately known as the “shoe room”, full of my collection of boots and heels. I find myself buying shoes more than any other item of clothing/accessory.” The other two top items for Sarah include fun outerwear - coats that make our winters more tolerable, and lip colour, as her look is incomplete until the perfect shade of lipstick is on.

What turns heads on a gorgeous Spring day? Picture this. The sun is shining, the breeze is warm, and the rays are reflecting off your Red Mist Metallic 2021 Corvette Convertible…. or maybe you went for the Arctic White, Silver Flare Metallic, Ceramic Matrix Grey Metallic, Elkhart Lake Blue Metallic, or any of the myriad of choices for this year’s ride.

April 2021

In fact, Andrew Wheaton’s father, Will, just ordered his 2021 Corvette Convertible in the deep ruby of the Red Mist Metallic. He joins other Edmontonians who find camaraderie and community in the large Corvette family that’s been going strong since the 70s. Edmonton, one of Canada’s largest and most northern centres, boasts a strong sports car market. Regularly, before COVID restrictions, these enthusiasts would host tuner nights and car meet-ups where you’d probably spot a few Corvettes gliding by. www.modernluxuria.com

Andrew Wheaton, Assistant Service Manager and grandson of Don Wheaton, explains that when the dealership opened in 1963, they felt like they were joining the community. The heritage space on Whyte Ave. is in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the thriving Old Strathcona scene and also benefits from the drive to support local businesses. In fact, customers have been buying their vehicles from Don Wheaton GM for more than 40 years! Don might have started this space on his own, but all eight of his children, and even some of his grandchildren are continuing the automotive tradition. This family has auto-knowledge in their DNA! ▶ - 35 -

As a third generation business, their exceptional customer service is matched with staff who have been around since the beginning; sharing over five decades of experience. Don Wheaton’s on Whyte is a place that everyone knows and also - rare to the franchise - offers the entire GM portfolio including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and Corvette.

Just like the Don Wheaton GM business, the Stingray is built on generational prowess. The first Corvette came in 1953 with only 300 cars hand-built and they all were painted Polo White. In 1954, Pennant Blue, Sportsman Red and Black were added. Today, the 2021 version offers so much more, from colours and stripes to design options, wireless phone projection, and a magnetic ride control for a smooth cruise.

Those deep growls just keep coming, whether you’re cruising around the Henday or hugging a mountain road. Mike Tyson called it the “baddest car on the planet,” and it's hard to argue with that. Andrew says a favourite route to purr along is Highway 1A through Cochrane and Exshaw towards Canmore. The blend of rivers and mountains is a perfect match for the sculpted lines of this iconic car.

A Restaurant With Two Faces It’s a venture born from the minds of owners Isaac Choi and Jake Lee, who met through a mutual broker. DOSC represents two different personalities uniting in an unassuming atmosphere. Similar to the Cat and the Ox, two concepts you wouldn’t expect to be under the same roof, they wanted to bring something unique to Edmonton - a venue with two faces where you could enjoy yourself at any time of the day. Whether you’re looking for a fresh cup of local joe, some afternoon cocktails or a Wagyu steak to write home about, DOSC has you covered. www.modernluxuria.com

Home is where the cat is, at least that’s what the neon sign says when you enter the Sober Cat Café, DOSC’s welcoming hug to the downtown day crowd. You won’t find any cats at this café though; this trendy café-by-day serves up artisanal cups of coffee made with handpicked beans from Edmonton’s own Rogue Wave Coffee Company. If your tummy is rumbling, Sober Cat’s Pastry Chef, Gabriel Luk creates a unique experience with her pastries. Try a Cruffle, a signature pastry that adorns a familiar waffle shape with the light fluffiness of a cruller dougnut. Or if you’re feeling hangry, try a Cruffle Breakfast Sandwich. Sober Cat’s menu features an array of rotating pastries, sandwiches, bowls and bites - something to satiate every appetite. ▶

April 2021

At 4 pm, there’s a change in the atmosphere as DOSC’s bar and dinner menu opens up to the public. Grab a stool at the bar and try one of DOSC’s signature cocktails, the welcoming ambience will have you feeling right at home. Whether it’s something off the menu, a dealer’s choice, or just finding the perfect cocktail to sip on, DOSC offers an assortment of spirits, liqueurs, house-made syrups, juices, bitters and other tinctures that are crafted right behind the bar. You can catch happy hour daily from 4-6 pm.

In the evenings you can indulge your inner carnivore with a steak made from local Alberta beef, or you can spoil yourself with DOSC’s acclaimed A5 Japanese Wagyu Steak. Wagyu beef is famous for its marbling and melt-inyour-mouth texture. Wagyu cows are rumoured to be massaged and have very strict diets which include beer, wine and local harvest. DOSC is currently serving two different types of Wagyu, the first being a crossbreed between a Japanese cow and AAA Alberta cow which creates an A3. Although it looks like a traditional ribeye, this steak is quite buttery and rich due to the greater marbling. DOSC is one of only eight restaurants in Edmonton that carry Brant Lake Wagyu. The second, A5 Iwate Wagyu, comes from a traditional Japanese Cow that

is imported straight from Japan. Iwate comes from a prefecture just up from Tokyo. Whichever steak you choose, DOSC’s Head Chefs Karl McKinnon and Shariff Rajpar have contrived an exquisite menu designed for the ultimate steak house experience. With a focus on local, DOSC sources as many local ingredients as possible, changing items on their menu seasonally as needed. They also make all of their own syrups and sauces in-house, and dry age and cure their own meats. The staff at DOSC are currently looking forward to the summer season. With the warmer weather quickly approaching, their patio is now open, so make sure to stop by for some bites and cocktails in the sunshine.

WORDS BY JOE GURBA

Rare Wine Report Many Albertans outside of the Drinks’ business don’t realize how good we have it here for wine selection. We live in one of the best wine markets in the world. Every week we see a new wave of lovely and limited wines appear in our shops, however briefly, until those in the know snap them up. This is a small sampling of the terroir driven wines you need to hunt down this month; wines made on small farms by true vignerons with that rare gift for gently translating nature into art. These wines are nourishing and artful records of another lap around the sun.

It’s widely held that Bouzy, the grand cru village in the south of the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne, grows the finest Pinot Noir for sparkling wine in the world. Stationed in the heart of Bouzy, I see no reason why 7th and 8th generation growers Benoit Paillard and his sons Quentin and Antoine would not agree. Certainly their champagnes make a strong case for it. Bouzy’s southern aspect, clay topsoil, classic chalk bedrock, and windbreak of forest at the crest of the slope all combine into the ideal ripening conditions for the elusive Pinot Noir, while still fostering the dazzling acidity needed for great bubbles. What most draws me into the Paillards’ grower champagnes is their devotion to farming excellent fruit, first and foremost. With only 11 hectares to their name, the Paillards have returned to selection massale: planting their vineyards from clippings of their oldest vines rather than ordering clones. This was the norm before the 70s and their revival of the practice promotes genetic diversity and a greater sense of singularity and place in every bottle. And in a wet and chilly appellation, they’ve also been early to bravely abandon chemicals, instead crafting their own organic composts to invigorate their soils. Les Parcelles is Pierre Paillard’s entry level cuvée, yet it swings far above its price. Two thirds of the ‘XV’ is based in the 2015 vintage with the remainder blended in from reserve wines. Les We also sees roughly two thirds Pinot Noir giving structure and power and 30% Chardonnay giving elegance and freshness. The second fermentations (in the bottle) are rested for four years on their lees (three years longer than required) creating a fine bead and plenty of biscuity complexity. These sleeping beauties enjoy their slumber in the domaine's 19th century 10º cellars, 60 meters below, as if to belabour their underground status. But these wines are less underground by the day, so get them now before they’re three figures.

Of the 51 grand crus that diamond-stud the vertical stretch of wine-heaven called Alsace, Sonnenglanz occupies the very center, abutting the idyllic village of Beblenheim. Meaning ‘ray of sunlight’, the Sonnenglanz vineyard grows one of the most prized examples of one of the most beguiling varieties: Gewürztraminer. Jean-Christophe Bott of Domaine Bott-Geyl is among the lucky few to tend vines in this special stretch of earth. He tends those vines with the devotion of a vigneron that knows real wine is made in the vineyard. Mssr. Bott has been farming biodynamically since 2002 and replenishing his vines with selection massale rather than clones. Taken together, these practices restore biodiversity to the vineyards and genetic diversity to the vines, resulting in healthier and more complex berries at harvest. The newly released 2008 vintage of Bott-Geyl’s Sonnenglanz Gewürztraminer has been courteously cellared by the domaine on our behalf, released ready to drink. Partially subject to noble rot, these berries had their sugar content concentrated and nuanced by classic botrytized notes of dried apricot and honey. The residual sugar remaining after fermentation thereby allows this wine to age beautifully, glacially incorporating those bewitching notes of lychee and rose petal that Gewürztraminer is famous for, into a more dried, potpourri like profile, never drowning out the notes of orange marmalade, coriander, and beeswax. These virtues are owing to the phenolic ripeness bestowed by Sonnenglanz’s sunbathed southeastern aspect and Mssr. Bott’s attentive farming, but it’s the calcium-rich Oligocene limestone and marlstone soils in this vineyard that amplify some much needed acidity. The high PH of calcium-rich soils inversely creates lower PH in wines, crucial for a grape like Gewürz who’s infamously wanting in the acid department. That acid retention keeps this wine’s swooning sweetness in balance. And the deep, honeyed colour in the glass is enough to confirm you are indeed drinking the nectar of Olympus.

Brunello is fascinating because even when it is produced in an absolutely natural fashion, it can still obtain 15.4% alcohol in a year like 2015, widely considered the vintage of the decade to date. Brunello is the blood of a god. Am I too hyperbolic? Perhaps, but Brunello is 100% Sangiovese, a portmanteau of sangue di giove, blood of Jove. And a Brunello like this one carries its confident strength with grace and panache, like a Muhammed Ali or a Joan of Arc. Kalyna & Pierre-Jean Monnoyer manage their young family and their wee estate of only four hectares with a storybook flare, farming biodynamically as their kids play among the vines. Kalyna’s mother, a Canadian in fact, bought this property in 1997 from the legendary Biondi-Santi family who’d planted these vines forty years earlier in the shadow of Montalcino’s hilltop perch. In this most lauded area of the 15 square kilometers that make up this famous appellation, the Monnoyers have commitment to natural wine making—using indigenous yeast and eschewing any additions or subtractions—just grapes. The result is wines that are less fruit forward, beautifully housed in the best French oak (Taransaud, from the Allier Fôret) but fashioned into large 3000L botti that age the wines more gently. These classical and minimal intervention choices have fascinated collectors searching for the heart and soul of Brunello alongside the Monnoyers. This is an exceedingly rare Brunello. The fruit for this bottling comes only from the 1.1 hectare plot of their oldest vines, producing in the area of only 1500 bottles per year for the entire globe. The wine is flush with ripe tannins and a muscular body yet delicately perfumed with sweet tobacco, sour cherry, chocolate mint, grated nutmeg, and new leather shoes kicking up the dust of a Tuscan footpath. It’s a maze you don’t want to find your way out of, a testament to how complex life’s most simple pleasures can be.

The tactile turn An antidote for too much: pour a cup of sage tea and settle in for Dianne Meili’s evocative journey through art and community We are all very aware of the role technology plays in our daily lives. Many of us have apps to track our use and remind us to stop and take deep breaths. In this context, when contacting Dianne Meili to speak about her evocative art, her paused response was because her

“hands were in clay.”

satiated her desire for a local artistic connection and took courses from and later joined the Parkland Potters Guild. If you assume that Dianne’s culture and history imbue her creative practise, you are right. Dianne is Cree Metis and her great grandmother was the well-known Cree Elder, healer, and midwife, Victoria Belcour. Her sacred homeland is Manitou Sakahigan, God’s Lake, also known as Lac Ste. Anne. Dianne bears testimony to that history and her profound ties with community enrich her pottery. The coming together of her own roots, and the act of creating is testament to the type of connection the beholder has with Dianne’s art. As Dianne explains, making with clay literally enables the inextricable co-mingling of the elements: earth, water, fire and air, in the sense of Dianne’s spirit. This creative turn usually appears as a way to decode Dianne’s feelings about an animal spirit, be it wolf, eagle, buffalo, or cougar, but can also be more overtly political in the sense of giving space to voices that have been quietened. Dianne recounts her reasoning behind her half decorated clay, Ghost Dress, to symbolize the life of Nina Courtepatte. Dianne’s clay representation brings forth what is missing and highlights the needless loss of the thirteen year old

writer and artist. It is a narrative of absence and questioning of how to conceptualize inequalities.

That desire to create; to take earth, as Dianne says, and

Dianne’s intertwining of art, spirituality, commentary,

transform it into something of use and something to delight the senses is also what helped Dianne survive. Her initial foray into pottery transpired as a coping

of a collective studio. Dianne’s future beckons a state of the art space that houses a collective of young

When one of Canada’s premier private golf clubs is ranked 17th by Score Golf Canada, there is an expectation of excellence. A progressive facility, The Blackhawk Golf Club, prides itself in having the resources to prioritize their members and elevate their course. That can only happen with a solid team. Entering his tenth season with the club and meeting all of those expectations, is head golf professional, Kevin Chow.

“Since becoming a golf professional I’ve probably never averaged more than two rounds of golf per week.” — Kevin Chow

One might assume that Chow had been groomed for a life on the links. Not so. Although academically and athletically inclined, golf was never on his radar. But a solid swing at the age of sixteen catapulted him into a career in golf. Turning pro three years later, and graduating with a diploma from the Professional Golf Management program from Grant MacEwan, Chow embodies the sentiment of ‘do what you love’ and ‘love what you do’.

Witness to golf’s evolution, it’s now a player’s overall physical fitness that is directly related to the success of their game. It’s no different for Chow, and finding the time to train can be challenging. Playing just enough rounds has offered him an understanding of his swing and some semblance of form. He humbly acknowledges that his playability is, “Ok”, and in the same breath recognizes the importance for him to play good golf and to have his peers respect his game. But he cautions, if the goal in joining the golf industry is to play more golf, look for a profession elsewhere. For now, ▶

Chow likens his training to cramming before an exam and is turning to Edmonton’s Jordan Jeske, creator of THE PROJCT, for a six week intensive program leading up to the golf season.

With outdoor recreation exploding over the past year, Chow says that Covid restrictions have influenced the culture of golf. “It’s switching from carts to walking and we’re embracing that shift. This is the way golf was meant to be played. There is a certain rhythmic aspect of walking a golf course, walking from shot to shot, playing golf in its truest form.” Chow is anticipating another similar season ahead and hopes this change will have a lasting impact on the golfer’s health and wellness. “Ultimately, I just want people to enjoy the game of golf.”
