Measure Twice, Cut Once: Oliver Apt. expands its areas of expertise

In addition to building timeless furniture, the independent design studio and workshop is also building an impressive client list of local businesses

You might not expect to find a carpentry shop in downtown Edmonton but there most certainly is one and it’s not just any carpentry shop, it’s a unique design studio and workshop that partners with business and residential clients. Oliver

Apartment has been building and finishing since 2011 but it wasn’t until two years ago that the company decided to break into design. That’s when Chris Provins joined Founder Landon Schedler as Creative Director for Oliver Apartment. Together the business partners and their team design and build the plans for brick and mortar locations of businesses in

Edmonton. Schedler and Provins met six

years ago when Schedler was hired by Lift Interactive to widen some boardroom

tables. Provins was working there as creative director and the two hit it off.

Their paths crossed a number of times on several small projects, most notably, when Provins was hired to design the brand and interior for Pip and Schedler and the Oliver Apartment team worked on all the tables and millwork. That’s

when Schedler connected the dots

and prompted Provins to join him at Oliver Apartment. The addition of Provins means Oliver Apartment is able to broaden its service offerings from carpentry and millwork to design, carpentry and millwork. This means the designer works in close proximity to the craftspeople who will be executing the project vision. “There are huge efficiencies there for not only us but for the client as well,” said Provins.

Oliver Apartment builds and installs custom furniture. It also designed - and continues to add to - its own line of furniture that pulls inspiration from mid-century modern design. “We want our furniture to be timeless,” explained Schedler. Tables and chairs, benches, shelving units, serving boards and clocks are just some of the items the company creates. It’s most popular pieces include the Central dining table and the High Level side tables.

In addition to building timeless furniture, the design studio and workshop is also building an impressive client list of local businesses. In fact, you’ve likely seen their work when out on the town. The Oliver Apartment team has worked with designers on projects for Duchess Bakery, The Bower, Bar Bricco, Woodwork, Cavern, Meat, Pip, Weekly, and Gravity Pope, among others. Their most recent design and build project was for Made by Marcus on Whyte Ave. Oliver Apartment crafted the vision and interior design of Made by Marcus’s first location in Edmonton and built the custom furniture for the ice cream shop, the product design, the menu displays, all the signage, all the graphics, even the custom bathroom wallpaper. “Basically everything visual in that space, we took care of,” said Provins.
