Slip Into Eight Hours of Luxury per Night
Organic cotton sheets provide a luxuriously healthy night’s sleep
WORDS BY KAREN MEURER
After a health scare, HauteCoton founder Nimi Kelloway started to take stalk of what she was putting in her body and on it. She changed her eating habits to be more clean and then while sitting in a nutrition class about organic farming vs. conventional farming, Kelloway made the connection between food and natural textiles. The textile industry can be very toxic and she learned that only 1% of the world's cotton is grown using organic methods. That made her question where her clothes and sheets were coming from and how they were made.
That is when Kelloway had her “Ah Ha!’ moment and HauteCoton was born. She was determined to provide a healthy alternative to conventional cotton bedding. “After all, we spend eight hours a night in bed. Why would I want to sleep in the chemicals found in synthetic sheets — right?”
Kelloway travelled to India to research cotton sustainable farming practices and fair working conditions. She saw exactly how HauteCoton bedding is made and talked with the sewists as they hand stitched coconut buttons onto duvets covers. She is particular about keeping the thread count of the silky sateen sheets to no more than 300. “People think that a higher thread count means more luxurious sheets, but that’s wrong,” Kellowy says. “A higher thread count means they have added unhealthy synthetic micro fibres in between the cotton fibres to make it feel more dense.”
HauteCoton organic bedding is luxuriously soft, which makes for a more healthy, restful, comfortable sleep. The natural breathable fibres allow you to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The sheets come in Classic White and Au Naturale. The natural colour is made from un-dyed organic cotton, with no chemicals or toxins used in the process. Along with sheets, pillow covers, and duvet covers HauteCoton also carries pillows filled with natural wool covered farming and found an organic supplier with
with their signature organic cotton.
When asked, “what does luxuria mean to you?” Kelloway said “a good night’s sleep.”
