FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: Charlotte Riley Blog Address: c-riley0811@blogspot.com

Rationale ‘Driven by hand crafted type and image with interest in packaging, print and format’ Hand rendered type and image will give my work a more personal, hands-on quality and aims to give my portfolio a stronger, clearer direction. I have a keen interest in audience interaction with relatively simple products so I will investigate ways of folding and crafting, hence I will focus on a printed resolution. I will take on live/competition briefs that compliment my design practice as it will result in a ‘real’ piece of design with a reason/context; I will also undertake self initiated briefs to give me the opportunity to focus on specific subjects that I am interested in such as New York. My progression is aimed towards working freelance so an understanding of contexts where my work would be appropriate and what the client wants will be crucial, reinforcing the need for live/competition briefs. Subjects / Themes Music/Subcultures – Lyrics, packaging, pop and rock (and its many subgenres) Distribution – Print, crafting. Audience interaction - Tangible Photograph – Urban/rural. New York – Events, architecture, land marks. Humour – Subtlety. Words – Type as image, quotes, music/lyrics. Simplicity Crafting - Ways of folding

Brief 1: New York

Deadline

28 Feb 2011

Rationale: An oppurtunity to take on a self initiated brief based on a key subject interest of mine. The focus will be on hand crafting and potentially photography. Brief 2: Body Shop - D&AD

Deadline

4 Mar 2011

Rationale: Competition brief to produce contemporary packaging for an actual brand. Enables me to research packaging suitable for the ethics of the brand for a range of products and see how my design practice can work on packaging. Brief 3: Ted Baker - YCN

Deadline

31 Mar 2011

Rationale: Competition brief to create a ‘irreverently british’ and humorous campaign. Allows me to look at innovative promotional ideas and apply my design practice to them; I will look at type and hand crafted imagery where appropriate.

Brief 4: Lyrics and Type

Deadline

(Ongoing)

Rationale: A self initiated, set of one day briefs to communicate lyrics, one of my key subjects, through hand rendered typography. Has the potential to be applied to products in order to expand the range and give the pieces more of a context. Brief 5: Puffin Children’s prize

Deadline

28 Feb 2011

Rationale: Relatively short competition brief to design a new book cover for James and the Giant Peach. It means I can explore type and image making for a young audience and a working with a pre-determined context. Contextual references / Designers / Studios / Companies (specific) Julien Vallee Sean Freeman Hattie Newman Skinny Ships (Richard Perez) Chrissie Macdonald Sagmeister

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Collect typefaces.

Deadline Ongoing

Details Gather a range of typefaces to use as a reference/source material for any hand crafted type work I choose to do.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Contact

Deadline Ongoing

Details Contact as many designers as I can (in terms of getting replies) to get feedback on some work but also to use as potential case studies for Design Context brief - flatter them.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Gallery Visits

Deadline Easter

Details Visit galleries etc. to see a further potential context for my work. Look at how they price the prints that they sell, the quality of stock etc.
