Spending Saturday night with your calculator isn’t exactly a party, but it might be bearable without having to stare at boring white forms. This kit contains downloadable PDFs, so printing and reprinting is a cinch. It’s a small investment to ensure you keep saving for that rainy day.

ustralians have more than 50 million dollars of credit card debt. Friends of mine who are notorious for impulse purchasing are also notorious for having a very thick monthly credit card statement. So, we come to the all-important life skill of financial management – because being good at it means more disposable income to spend on quilted bombers (or Kenzo platform sneakers, or Valentino iPhone cases). My number one tip? Put coins in a jar – it actually works if you’re smart about it. Only bother with gold and promise not to touch it for six months at least. I use a metal canister that can only be opened with a buzz-saw (seriously). But before you race off to start your retirement fund in a piggy bank, hear this very grown-up, expert advice: if you’ve got credit card debt, pay it off first – the interest charged is money for nothing. Total waste. Got a clean slate? Time to dig out the buzz-saw. LAURA COLLINS

he sight of an “80 per cent off retail price” sign can send any rational woman nuts. But after the frenzy, many a fashionlover leaves a sample sale with a whole lot of s**t she doesn’t want – and if she’s lucky, the one thing she does. You can bag the odd treasure (we’ve all heard the urban legends of $75 Choos), but some sales can be bad news for your sanity, wallet – and whichever unlucky soul reaches for that last Dion Lee skirt the same time you do. How to avoid temporary fashion madness? Spend your hard-earned dollars on a sale by a designer you really love; if you’re a regular customer, you’ll be able to tell what suits you (before you start ripping clothes out of strangers’ hands). Make a hit list and don’t let huge percentage discounts suck you into wasting your entire budget on stuff you don’t need – 60 per cent off $500 is still $200. No matter how good the offer seems, you’ll save 100 per cent by not ending up with, let’s face it, crap you won’t wear. LAURA COLLINS

Jeans for less than a weekly bus ticket? Yep. Cocktail frocks with cash back from 25 bucks? You got it. Cocolàtte (cocolatte.com.au) is serious loosechange shopping — on offer are wearable pieces you’ll keep for more than a season and trend-inspired buys, like this season’s khaki and jewel tones. The mix of modern workwear and party dresses guarantees you’ll never have “nothing to wear”, even if you’ve only got lunch money to spend.

CHE AP & CHIC: When it comes to winter layering, invest wisely.
S
ome people dress their best in summer. I am not one of them. I need layers, a wardrobe full of jackets and coats, and copious amounts of wool wrapped around my head and neck. Most feel like they should buy another great coat each winter, and that’s fine if it’s worn enough. But if you reach for it as often as last Halloween’s Sue Sylvester costume, don’t bother. If you genuinely need a coat, spend a little more – it’s a solid investment. Shopping for extra layers? Save on what you wear underneath to ensure you don’t blow your seasonal allowance – a wool jumper in grey or navy keeps you snug when the coat comes off; pick one up on sale and keep it for next year. The sturdy ankle boots you (probably) bought in summer translate perfectly for a winter wardrobe, as do jeans, tees and lightweight jackets. Splash any spare cash on bright beanies and scarves – guaranteed to lift your spirits on the rainiest of Sundays. LAURA COLLINS

1. Turn the garment inside out and locate the tear. 2. Thread a medium-sized needle with cotton (the length of your arm) the same colour as the garment. 3. Push the needle through the material just below the tear, then weave it back (not up and over the seam). Make the stitches as close together as possible and keep going until you’ve worked the full length of the tear. 4. Take the needle back over the seam and into the other side. Continue down the length of the entire seam to prevent it fraying. 5. Tie a few small knots in the thread where it stops, then sew small stitches in the same spot to secure. Snip the thread close to the material. Done!
