GUY THING

Suitcase, $3600, Louis Vuitton, 1300 883 880.

hen something’s not quite right about an outfit, it’s tempting to make things better with accessories. This applies to both guys and girls. A man looks at what he’s wearing, doesn’t like what he sees and thinks a statement watch can solve the problem. If he’s still not feeling it, he throws on a scarf, then a fun pair of socks. At some point, he (fortunately) runs out of extras and has to leave for the day. The problem compensating with add-ons is that it ignores why the ensemble was ‘meh’ to begin with. The most likely culprit? His clothes don’t fit well – and they won’t get better just because an entire arsenal of accessories is layered over the top. If his clothes are a perfect fit, he can dress simply. A tailored pair of trousers, a nicely cut shirt and quality shoes make you the sharpest-looking in the room. The key is in finding pieces that fit and flatter – or using a tailor to tweak items. Focus on two things: no folds of cloth spilling and rumpling anywhere, and no puckers or pulls from wearing too-tight clothes. Don’t get me wrong, a nice accessory can add character, but men look good when what they wear fits well, and that’s something your Jacket, $342 (med-xlge), Hugo favourite hat can’t help.

LV PACKS IT IN The French luxury brand has been designing trunks since the 1800s. Louis Vuitton CEO, Philip Corne, spills the secrets to perfect packing. 1. Put shoes at the bottom and top, with each shoe on opposite sides to balance the weight. 2. Add your toiletries bag, then fill spaces with other small items like belts, socks and underwear. 3. On the wheeled side, stack shirts collar to hem, intertwined, collars raised, with a few buttons done up to minimise creases. 4. T-shirts and jumpers should be rolled and put at the top. Place delicate accessories (like ties and watches) between the gaps. 5. Next, jeans and then jackets — folded twice, in at the sleeves and then lengthways. 6. Neatly hang your suit in a suit bag, then drape it softly in folds to rest on top. Finally, zip up.
