I

’m somewhat ashamed to admit I was around for the first incarnation of grunge. Think Nirvana, MTV, and Courtney Love rocking out in Doc Martens. The ’90s was a mash-up of ’70s free love and the smell of teen spirit and, although it was cool, it certainly wasn’t feminine. Enter today’s neo-grunge – where florals and softer colours are as much a part of the trend as plaid and chunky boots. Heavy flannel has given way to fabrics like cotton and chiffon, but the foundations are the same: oversized knits, a touch of denim or khaki, and a plaid shirt tied carelessly around the waist (even if it takes you five minutes to get it totally perfect). The new grunge has a thrown-together “what, this old thing?” feel that’s easily achievable in plus sizes. Team a girlie plaid shirt with a mannish jacket and a floaty skirt. Remember, a careless attitude is key, so stick with a base of muted colours (stay far away from anything bright) and you can’t go wrong. Dress, $76 (20-26), Asos, asos.com/au. Next stop, Seattle…

PLUS SIDE

Major fashion brands have gained a bad rep over the years for ignoring the plus-size market. That’s why we’re fans of Leona Edmiston: selected styles of the designer’s signature jersey frocks go up to size 20. There’s also her Leona + By Leona label (sold exclusively through Myer), with deliciously silky fabrics and pretty prints to rival the main line. Sizes range Dress, $395 (8-20), Leona Edmiston, from 16-24 and leonaedmiston.com. start at $150.

PLUS SIDE: The season’s favourite decade gets a feminine twist.
