Hello, It’s Me:

My intention for the journal:

Why are you here?

4

1

Money. You’re here because of money. It’s the reason you picked up this journal and why we need to have an open and honest discussion about some of the deep-seated money taboos that you’ve come to know. Money is a tool to help you accomplish all those things you want to do in life - nothing more, nothing less. Money does not have power over your life, but it does have the ability to change your life. Let that sink in for a second. Research has shown that it takes on average 66 days to form a new habit but could take as long as 254 days to become a daily practice. Forming better patterns around money takes time. Our plan takes you on a six-month journey to cultivate new habits and create a roadmap to radically change your mindset around not only money, but your entire life. In the Money Mindset Journal, you’re going to see your money in a new, fun, and fresh way. The best news is that you don’t have to be a math expert or financial guru to figure this thing out. Anyone can do it!

2

Mindset. The number one missing ingredient to achieve your money goals is your mindset. It’s a critical factor in your life and success, and yet somehow, we forget to acknowledge its importance. We’re flipping that script! Cultivating a healthy money mindset brings the power of attention to your thoughts and offers a way to move from stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, complacent (take your pick or make up your own word) to a place of peace.

3

Abundance. At the core, having an abundant life is about way more than money and stuff. Instead, it’s about balance in all areas of your life. Creating abundance is a four-step process: seeing the reality, releasing judgments, creating a vision, and taking steps for what could be. The Money Mindset Journal takes you through this four-step process in an easy to follow way that will help you create abundance in all areas of your life.

4

Visioning. You need a vision for where you want to go and what you want to do in life. Visioning is the roadmap to your future, which starts with the steps you take today. That vision could be something small, like seeing your credit card debt paid off or something big like buying your dream home. Visioning plays a key role in the Money Mindset Journal and serves as a grounding force for why we use The Plan.

5

Work. Let’s be real. You’ve got to do the work. No matter what your vision is, and what kind of mindset you bring to it, you need to roll up your sleeves and get to work - no need to freak out or start the armpit sweats. Rome wasn’t built in a day; so give yourself a little grace through the process. All this journal requires is a few minutes every day of focused attention to see real change happen.

6

You. The last and most important piece of this puzzle is YOU. This whole process comes down to you and the actions you take every day. The positive mindset you will cultivate along the way. Small steps lead to big changes. Take your first step and dig in. It’s time to bring your A-game, your B-game…any game you got! Just show up every day, do the work, and you’re going to start seeing big changes. We can’t wait to see your progress. You got this!

What is a money mindset? Each one of us has a money mindset, or a way we think, act and feel about money. Your money mindset is shaped by how you were raised, the decisions you’ve made, your general outlook on life, friends, family, experiences, and so much more.

“If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” - MARY ENGELBREIT Being mindful about your money, your life, your career, your relationships, etc. starts with setting aside time to regroup and direct your focus toward positive, empowering thoughts, along with taking progressive action so you can be the best version of yourself. By rewiring your thoughts, you begin to form positive habits that can lead to success. It’s not really about what you want, but what you are willing to do to get what you want—and you have to start somewhere. Your money mindset holds incredible power over you. Whether you know it or not, it already does. Your money mindset can be your best friend and tell you positive and reaffirming statements such as, “Hey, you are awesome for making that extra payment towards your credit card last week. Or, “It’s ok if you don’t get that raise, you’re doing a great job—keep at it.” These affirming thoughts can go a long way toward keeping you centered and stress-free. Your money mindset can also be your worst nightmare replaying over and over again in your mind reminding you of all the money mistakes you’ve made and affirming that “you will never get out of debt” or “you have a real shopping problem, you know.” These money lies keep you stuck in the cycles you so desperately need to break.

9

Cultivating a healthy money mindset through mindfulness comes from actively paying attention to what you are focusing on and any judgments you are making as a result of that focus. Mindfulness is something you can do throughout the day: while you’re at your job or exercising or making money decisions about buying a house or buying that five dollar cup of coffee. You can practice money mindfulness in big moments when you’re faced with what feels like a life-altering dilemma or in the small, in-between moments when you are making daily money decisions. The critical thing to remember is to start small. Mindfulness is like exercising a muscle. Sure, you could start with the 20-pound weights first, but chances are you won’t be able to do too many reps if any at all. Most likely, you’re going to end up discouraged and frustrated, and you probably won’t want to try again. Instead, start with two-pound weights, then move on to five-pound weights, ten-pound weights, and so on until you build muscle. Building a healthy money mindset is the same as building muscle; you need to start small. You build that healthy mindset muscle each time you choose to be kind to yourself or put $20 extra towards your debt this month. These small money mindset choices will build over time to create not only a healthier, stronger mindset but also the ability to take bigger steps. There are lots of ways to shift from a negative mindset to positive one. It starts with replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. For example, use the “This / Not That” list below as examples of how you can change negative thought patterns into positive ones. Create your own list of “This / Not That” items when negative thought patterns come up. But don’t stop there. Creating a healthy mindset is also about taking time out of your day to center yourself and focus your attention on something that is calming and nourishing to your soul.

10

This

Not That

I’m going to put $20 towards my debt this week

I will never get out of debt

I am going to listen to a podcast this week about women in the workplace

I don’t know how to negotiate for a raise

I am going to write a list of 10 things I love about where I live

I will never be able to buy a home

Here are a few examples of ways to add more mindfulness in your day. • • • • • • • • • •

Think kind loving thoughts about where you are at in life Do a simple breathing exercise to spur relaxation & peace Go for a gratitude walk and list 10 things you’re grateful for Head to a yoga class to clear your mind Listen to a playlist that inspires you Meditate for at least 10 minutes with your favorite app Stop what you are doing and reconnect with your goals Remind yourself of all the good decisions you have made this year Cook a great meal and savor each bite Do something different that works for you in your life

11

When you are mindful of your money, you are actively deciding where to put your focus. Redirecting your focus puts you in the driver’s seat to make decisions about how you will spend your money, what goals are important in your life, and how you choose to frame your current money situation. It doesn’t mean that you will never have a setback or a slip-up. Instead, a good money mindset is the art of making peace with your money and the decisions you have made. Knowing that when you do slip-up, you dust yourself off, refocus your goals, and move forward without all the negative self-talk. Real change comes from being mindful every day and choosing to focus on positive thoughts like, “it’s ok, I’ll make a better decision next time.” Or, heading out for a walk when you find yourself stressed out and anxious about money. You will be surprised at the amount of change and progress you can make in your life once you commit to get in a good relationship with your money mindset.

12

The Plan It all starts with a plan. You want to run a marathon? You need a plan. You want to lose weight? You need a plan You want to write a book or start a business? You need a plan. Every money goal also needs a plan. You want to pay off debt, buy a house, buy that new pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing, or maybe replace the couch your parents gave you in college? You need a plan. Any money goal in life needs a plan. The plan you’ll find in these pages is one that I’ve developed over the last 15 years as an entrepreneur, a Certified Financial Planner, money expert, Millennial Money podcast host, and someone who has a lot of goals to accomplish in life. I’ve worked with all kinds of people and personalities. I’ve studied people who have achieved goals right and left, people who have struggled to achieve any goals, people who have made a ton of money, and people who have lived paycheck-to-paycheck. What I have found, regardless of income, job title, or stage in life, are two powerful connections to success: your mindset and small daily action steps. In case you haven’t noticed, money is a bit of a taboo topic. We don’t talk about money, but we should. Because talking about something clears the air. It brings a sense of “it’s going to be ok” to the problem. It allows breathing room, creativity, and innovation around an obstacle. So, let’s talk about it. Let’s get to the bottom of your goals, your dreams, your desires, and everything in between. Let’s understand why you make certain money choices and don’t make others. Let’s take away the judgment, fear, and stress around money and create a solid action plan day-by-day to achieve your goals - big or small.

13

Let this journal inspire you to reach beyond your bank account balance and realize that every goal is possible with daily habits and a positive money mindset. Now that you are inspired to tackle your dreams, I’m here to remind you that your journey won’t be perfect, but that’s ok. No journey is ever perfect. You will make mistakes. It will be hard at times. Building a new mindset around money is not easy, but it will be so rewarding at the end. It may sound pretty crazy, but have fun in this process. You make a mistake, laugh it off. You get scared and don’t want to confront something inside of you, laugh it off and move on and try, try again. Life should be fun. Money is fun! And we guarantee if you picked up this book, you’re fun, too. So...let’s have FUN! “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” - FERRIS BUELLER Let’s be creative with this whole life-changing process. Let’s draw, let’s dream, let’s plan, and let’s achieve together here. Welcome to the party; it’s time to get your shi*t together - let’s get this thing started!

14

How to use this journal.

15

STEP 1

Visioning

16

This plan is different because it starts with a vision. Before you even turn the page or fill in a single date or detail in this journal, begin your journey by envisioning your future you. Consider the way you want to feel when you wake up in the morning. Think about your biggest (and smallest) aspirations in life. What is one goal you keep writing on your list year after year that you finally want to accomplish? Who is the version of you that you want to be? Start at the beginning with the Visioning section. This section is the place to unleash your inner Picasso and visualize the future you. Creative visualization is one of the best ways to manifest all those dreams and goals you have deep in your soul. Think of it as a vision board that you can add to throughout the next six months as creativity and inspiration spark. So, go big here and manifest like crazy! Here are a few ways you can use the Visioning section: • • • •

Draw a picture of the future you Write or draw a goal you want to achieve (or multiple!) Write inspirational words or mantras Cut out pictures and sayings to make a collage of the life you envision • Put a picture of a person, place, or thing that inspires you • Leave it blank and create another place in your house to help you visualize your future Whatever you choose to create, be specific, and be bold with the intentions you set for yourself. You do you!

17

STEP 2

My Money Story

18

Understanding where you’ve come from is pivotal to forming a healthy money mindset and working towards your goals. My Money Story is where you can really begin to dive into your thoughts and experiences with money as well as your current feelings around the topic. Use the prompts for jogging your memory and writing as many things that come to your mind over the next six months. This section is where you will start to understand why you think, act, and feel the way you do about money. Most importantly, don’t judge or beat yourself up over your money story. That’s the past and we’re leaving it behind. Wave goodbye to all those old feelings!

19

STEP 3

Cash Tracker + Monthly Intentions

20

Make sure you start each month with a clear view of your current financial status, planned expenses, and money goals. Take a few minutes to fill in the My Monthly Intentions, I Think I’ll Make and I Think I’ll Spend sections of the Cash Tracker. The My Monthly Intentions section is the place to choose a word of the month to focus on, pick a big goal for the month, analyze what might be keeping you stuck, and visualize how wonderful you will feel at the end of the month. The I Think I’ll Make and I Think I’ll Spend sections are a convenient place to jot down the income and expenses that you think will happen throughout the month. Hint: just use numbers from the previous month to complete this section quickly – put in your best guess. Add in normal expenses like eating out, groceries, utilities, and loan payments as well as extra expenses that you expect this month like car insurance, taxes, an upcoming vacation, the dog swallowed the remote, etc. You’ll come back to complete the sections, I Did Make and I Did Spend, at the end of the month. Finally, go back to the I Did Make and I Did Spend sections of the Cash Tracker. Filling these out should take you 20-30 minutes each month. Use a mobile budgeting app or simply print off your monthly bank statement and add up how much you actually spent in each category. Once you have all the numbers filled in, compare each category: I Think I’ll Spend vs. I Did Spend. Do you see any patterns emerge? Are there areas of your spending where you need to establish a boundary? What went right and what didn’t go the way you thought it would? Seeing your numbers, loud and clear, is the best way to bring about real change.

21

STEP 4

Quotes

22

Be inspired by the monthly Quotes. Tear out the quote at the beginning of each month and frame it, put it on your fridge or put it some place that will inspire you. Even better - share it on social media, share it with a friend, add it to your visioning section, or journal about how it makes you feel in the back of this journal. The more you talk about and process through the steps in this journal, the more impact it will have on your mindset.

23

STEP 5

Daily Journal

24

The Daily Journal pages are where you will set goals, track your progress, and process your feelings. Perfection is not the goal here; perfection is overrated. The goal is to set one single goal for the day. It can be small, like checking your bank account balance, moving money to your savings account, focusing on positive thinking, or finally making it to spin class. If you’re really feeling it, you can start setting bigger goals like finishing your business plan, negotiating for a more substantial salary, signing a contract to buy a home, or finally paying off your last bit of student loan debt. Each day is a fresh new start. Begin by setting your goal for the day and writing down the action steps you will take to achieve that goal. The action steps can be simple like getting yourself pumped up by listening to your favorite song or more complex like researching banks with the best savings accounts. Keep your action steps focused on the goal you set and check off the steps you have taken that day as you tuck yourself in at night. The practice of writing down a daily goal along with a few action steps and always focusing on gratitude keeps you motivated, focused, and cultivates a mindset of progress. Gratitude is a key component to living a happy and fulfilled life. Gratitude and being grateful is about a lot more than just money. Gratitude is the act of being thankful for where you live, the people in your life, your health and more. Go ahead and list a few things you are grateful for today to remind yourself of all the wonderful things in your life. Come back to the journal before you go to sleep and take a few minutes to list three moments of awesome in your day like snagging that front parking spot, or landing a new work project. Finally, conclude with filling in the Word up section with one word to describe your day in a nutshell.

25

STEP 6

Money Truth or Dare

26

Since this process is about growth, we’ve included a weekly challenge for you along the way. At the end of each week, choose a Money Truth or Dare. Don’t worry, we won’t make you sell your possessions, reveal your bank account balance to your friends on social media, or even make you go to work in your pajamas. But we will challenge you to take steps that will improve your money mindset and push you (sometimes gently, sometimes not) towards financial goals that will bring you closer to the life you want to live and the person you want to be. And maybe, just maybe, we’re going to help you invite people into this journey with you because having a healthy money mindset isn’t just for you and me. Let’s change the way we all think about money.

27

STEP 7

Reflection

28

To wrap up the month, answer the two prompts provided in the Month in Review section and fill in your I am / I have affirmation list. These are positive affirmations that you will carry through to the next month. For example: • I am paying off my credit card debt • I have run my first marathon • I have negotiated for a higher salary • I am active and choose to take the stairs each day And so on. Write down as many big or small positive affirmations that you want to focus on for the next month.

Keep it Up! Don’t stop there. Continue to cultivate your new healthy mindset around money with practices like meditation, talking to a friend, going to therapy, reading a good book, or connecting with nature on a hike. Stay mindful of any negative self-talk or judgment that might rise to the surface. It happens to the best of us; so when it does, think kind and loving thoughts about where you are in your life and what changes you’ve already made thus far. Committing to this journal is a huge step forward in your journey. Remember, money is just a tool to help us live the life we want to live. “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.” —AYN RAND

29

Sample Pages. Here are sample journal pages from our daily and monthly practice to give you a feel for how you can use the journal. Use these sample pages as your guide and then make them your own. This process is all about you and your success.

My Monthly Intentions Month:

July

My word of the month is:

Fearless

My big goal for the month is:

My goal this month is to intentionally check my ATM receipts and bank account each week so I know where money is going, AND I won’t freak out each time.

What is holding me back?

I hate looking at my ATM receipts or bank statement. My anxiety goes through the roof every time I have to check it, so I usually don’t. I always fight the feeling of what amount my brain is telling me that I should have in my account. Is there a magic number? NO, I need to stay in my own lane and not let those crazy voices in my head dictate my emotions and actions. How do I want to feel at the end of the month?

At peace with my new routines, new discoveries about myself and direction in life I am headed.

Month in Review This month I felt like a winner when…

I was genuinely able to relax and live in the moment. I feel like I struggle with this so much and I don’t understand why. Being productive in the morning and sticking to my routine makes me feel more grounded and focused...I’m really going to try to stick with it throughout next month. but I’m still working on...

Anxiety. It seems to sneak up on me a little bit every day. I don’t even know what I am anxious about half the time. I’m also still working on not worrying about our outstanding credit card debt. I know it will get paid off. Still working on metally being ok with being a work in progress. My affirmations, I (am, have): 1

I have regularly looked at my bank statements

2

I have learned how to make pasta from scratch

3

I am happy with my body image, even after the pasta

4

I am no longer afraid of making mistakes

5

I have worked out at least 3 times a week

6

I told 10 friends they need to buy this journal

7

I am starting to chip away at my credit card debt - baby steps

8

I am meditating each night before I go to sleep to calm my active brain

The Power of My Money Story It’s true, we all have a money story. You may have never taken the time to examine yours, but it’s there. It’s a part of you just like your DNA and your love of all things chocolate, or chips for all you salt fiends. Your money story is powerful. Whether you know it or not, your money story has shaped how you think, act, and feel about money. Let that sink in for a moment. If you’re going to crush your money goals, you need to take some time to think about and write down your money story. Start by answering a few of the questions listed below. You can come back at any time in the next six months to look over your answers, fill in the blanks, and add more detail as it comes to you. Remember, all the mistakes, the expectations of others and the negative inner thoughts we all tell ourselves are GONE - it’s time for your new story to begin and who better to create such a story than YOU!

41

My Money Story How did your parents (or whoever raised you) feel about money?

Did you talk about money in your house? Why or why not?

Are there any moments you remember as a child when you had positive or negative thoughts about money? Explain.

42

What money patterns, good or bad, do you see yourself repeating that you learned as a child?

How did your family approach saving, spending, and giving away money?

What money message(s) did your mom pass down to you?

43

What money message(s) did your dad pass down to you?

What positive or negative lessons about money have you learned from people outside of your family?

What has your experience been with credit cards?

44

When, if ever, have you incurred debt? How did it impact your life practically or emotionally?

How is money currently impacting your life? List all the highs and lows, don’t leave anything out.

45

What thoughts or emotions come to mind when you think about money today?

What do you want your future money story to be?

46

Money Timeline Just like seeing the real numbers is the only way to activate real change, seeing your story written out from beginning to end is a great way to grasp your money story visually. Using the prompts provided on this timeline, start by filling in your thoughts or experiences with money for each age listed. Write positive money experiences above the line and negative money experiences below the line. As more details come to you, fill in as much of your timeline as possible to help you see the journey you’ve been on. Examples: + Positive: Got my first job - Negative: Got into credit card debt after college + Positive: Bought my first home - Negative: Incurred a ton of medical debt (a baby, surgery, etc.) Tip: Consider using a pencil for this exercise in case you need to go back to add, edit, or fill in more details later.

Strike A Pose.

258

Another way to mindfully combat stress in your daily life is to strike a pose - a yoga pose of course. Constant stress in your life without a release valve will eventually take a toll on your body and mental health. Doing a simple yoga pose for just a few minutes a day to relieve stress has shown to have a calming effect on the body. Stress zaps all of the energy in our bodies. When our energy tank is depleted, anxiety can build and anything can push you over the edge. Whether you are a regularly practicing veteran yogi or newbie rookie to yoga, doing these simple poses to relieve all that built-up stress will reap abundant rewards.

3 Yoga Poses To Relieve Stress:

Child’s Pose

Instructions 1. Kneel on a yoga mat or floor with legs together, sitting back on heels 2. Hinge forward until chest rests on thighs, forehead is on the floor 3. Curl shoulders forward and let hands rest, palms up, next to feet, hold for 5 breaths How It Calms • A resting posture that quiets the mind and eases stress • Benefits the nervous and lymphatic systems

259

Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose

Instructions 1. Sit with hips against the wall and sit back, taking legs up the wall 2. Bottom should be pressed as close to the wall as possible; hold for 5 minutes How It Calms • Helps stress reduction • Helps renew blood and lymph drainage back into the heart area

260

Corpse Pose

Instructions 1. Lie flat on back with legs together, but not touching, arms at side, palms up 2. Keep eyes closed and face relaxed; breath deeply 3. Hold for 3-5 minutes How It Calms • Puts the body at ease and emphasizes total relaxation • Slows breathing • Lowers blood pressure • Quiets nervous system
