INF 103 Week 3 DQ 1 Ubiquitous Computing and Your Privacy MySpace, Facebook, email, and collaborative sites for both work and leisure are a norm on the net these days. But did you know all of the content you post on many of these sites immediately become partially owned by the sites themselves? And, taking items away by deleting them never really gets rid of them. In fact, in Groundswell by Bernoff and Li, they state that trying to take something off the Internet that you have posted is like trying to remove pee from a pool. Scott McNealy, founder of Sun Microsystems, perhaps sums it up best, “You have zero privacy anyway. INF 103 Week 5 DQ 1 Artificial Intelligence, Singularity, and Google In addition to reading Chapter Nine, review the following resources: § Google Talk gets translation services (via robots) § Translation bots – Google talk help § Google previews new translation services Alan Turing said, “The extent to which we regard something as behaving in an intelligent manner is determined as much by our own state of mind and training as by the properties of the object under consideration.” Given the developments in cloud computing, automatic speech recognition, instantaneous optical recognition, and real-time translation of languages in mobile devices, are we now closer to achieving artificial intelligence and singularity? Why? Will the humanity be better off with or without the passing of singularity? Which benefits will we enjoy?

Will we ever have to be worried about a system like HAL, the malevolent computer in the movie “2001″? Explore ethical implications that will be realized. Possible Outcomes. INF 103 Week 5 Final Research Project The Research Paper and accompanying PowerPoint slide show presentation should demonstrate an understanding of the readings as well as the implications of new knowledge. The five-to-seven page paper should summarize the research you found about your theme/topic while using the Microsoft Office applications, library databases, and optional Jing or Prezi, to compile all of the text and other objects you decide to include in your paper (charts, clip-art, and other objects). You may choose a topic, but it must be researchable. Be sure to refer to Research Project Milestones in Weeks 1-4. Your Research Paper will focus on a particular main theme or topic related to today’s and tomorrow’s technologies and their impact on society. Your textbook will serve as a main source of ideas and information to define and explore your theme/topic. In addition, you will utilize Library databases and web resources for research. Possible Themes/Topics § Artificial Intelligence § Cloud Computing § Collaborative Applications § Computer and Web Ethics § Converging Technologies § Copyright, Intellectual Property and Innovation § Digital Divide § Green Technology § Mobile Computing § Open Source Software § Social Web § Virtual Reality The research-based paper should demonstrate your competence to do the following: § Define the selected theme/topic and build your thesis and supporting materials. § Conduct research by using the Internet and Library databases to locate, evaluate, and download information from a variety of sources to substantiate your thesis. § Build a complex document that includes tables, graphs and/or other embedded objects. § Generate charts using data from an Excel spreadsheet to include in the paper. § Plan and build a presentation using PowerPoint and/or optional tools to summarize the contents of the paper.
