A competition project localized in Zelazowa Wola, Poland for a Concert Hall in honor of Chopin. Chopin was born and lived part of his life in Zelazowa Wola. The proposed project has the intention of bringing back the memory of Chopin into the building by planting a maple tree in his honor. The wood of this local tree is used to manufacture pianos. The facade was inspired by bars of music from his famous composition “Prelude 28�, which was the music Chopin requested for his own funeral. Respecting the local architecture and the surrounding natural resources, wood and glass were the main materials utilized in this project. The facade is made of local wood fins that are slightly rotated for sun protection and privacy, with a more enclosed design on the south facade. The intention was to keep it as thin as possible to not obstruct the vision from the front of the building to the internal courtyard where the tree is planted. Rotational Trombe walls with photo-voltaic panels were placed on the south facade for thermal control as well as privacy in certain rooms. Also, photo-voltaic panels were installed in the roof top to generate electricity for the building. The L+U shape brings the relationship between private, semi-public and open spaces. With Brazilian inspiration, the concert hall receives local wood acoustic panels that can be adjusted individually accordingly with the performance offered. Green roofs and open spaces were designed to maintain the connection between man, building and nature.

MODULAR BUILDING The Modular Building is a proposed mixed-use complex located at the intersection of Old Concord Road and North Tryon Street in Charlotte, NC. The program includes retail spaces with offices and residential units. The primary facades are elongated and extended across the horizon with surfaces that face North and South.

Camp North End

In order to design a master plan for Camp North End, an analysis of North End Smart District was made. Demographic data from the city, site visits, data from ArcGIS and from other fonts were necessary to better understand the site and to direct to a functional design. Due to its historical value, existing buildings were kept with small transformations to accommodate the new master plan. The main concept is two green way axises connecting north to south and west to east. A green roof for events and leisure with ramps connecting the green ways was proposed as well. The goal was to design a space as free of cars as possible. In consideration to the site dimension, roads were created or kept to assist retail and restaurants. The buildings were transformed into offices, retail, restaurants and social gathering spaces. Open spaces were strategically located for social events. A small portion of the site will have low density apartment buildings that will promote the connection between existing surrounded neighborhoods. A park was designed near it with the purpose of offering leisure to the residents.

After the analysis of Camp North End District was done, a strategic area was selected to develop the area integrating the local population and to bring new investments for the area. Transportation, green ways and new urban areas such as residential, commercial and retail were considered with a focus on the connection to the Camp North End that would further become a master plan. Industrial buildings were repositioned behind the railroads opening spaces for new single and multi-family neighborhoods. Retail and commercial buildings were placed alongside with North Tryon Avenue. A transportation Hub was created next to the railroad station to better assist the population and facilitate the access to the area from other neighborhoods. Current homeless shelters were repositioned in an area near downtown and southeast of Camp North End for the homeless people localized in the south area of the Camp North End Smart District. Those shelters became 5 story residential buildings designed to accommodate the homeless people. Institutional and commercial buildings were placed near the 5 story buildings with the purpose of bringing rehabilitation, education and work to the new residents.

Cinematheque Miami The focus of this project was to train for professional work having as the priority the development of technical drawings based on Miami’s building code. The project drawings included but were not limited to wall sections, egress life-safety, mechanical ventilation, ADA regulations, drainage, foundation, structure, fire protection, plumbing and electrical. Time was short for the design of the building, making precedents very important. Lina Bo Bardi’s Museum of Art in Sao Paulo was the inspiration for my project. I was eager to understand the challenging MASP structure and apply its concepts to my design. Site shape and location also played a role in influencing the concept of the structure. The larger of two theaters is suspended by two main trusses and connecting beam, which gives the impression of it floating above the ground beneath. The retail stores and café are located at the street corner below the larger theater, making the building more inviting. The central courtyard creates a transitional space between the street and the building with the intension of inviting in the public.

GOME’S RESIDENCE The challenge of this project was to design a house in a 3,200 square foot lot. Indaiatuba, Brazil, the city where it was built, has its own particular building code as every city there does. One example of the code requirements is any wall with a window built alongside a boundary must be set 1.5 meters apart from it. Because it is expensive to build a house with a central air conditioning system, the majority of people in Brazil choose to build their houses without it. For this reason and paying close attention to the inclement weather, architects and engineers design their projects considering cross ventilation and natural light. I designed three different house options with all my client’s desires. He was very satisfied by the three of them, however, cost became a major factor in his final decision. Therefore, I adjusted the drawings to adhere to his requests and financial constraints, respecting the codes and passive design. The cities in Brazil are built on the European model, which makes the lot sizes very small that in turn makes designing more challenging. This house is considered to be a good size house for the medium to upper class there.

The construction system in Brazil is done with masonry and mortar without insulation. For this reason, passive design is a key strategy. Laundries are usually placed outside of the house to make it easy to hang clothes to dry. Barbecue is very important for Brazilian culture making a barbecue area in the backyard very desirable.
