DALI Workshops at DIAL TEXT Sigi Riedelbauch, PublicTouch PICTURES DIAL, Studio Steve, Thomas Bach, Alexander Ring, Maike Hufenbach

LED technology offers new opportunities, as well as challenges, in terms of design and lighting control. This puts DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) directly into the spotlight. Although this standard has been around since 2000, it's now experiencing a real boom with the popularity of LED. DALI is playing an increasingly indispensable role in modern and dynamic lighting. And yet there are still gaps to bridge in the public's knowledge of system integrators and electrical contractors. DIAL has recognised this need, and now offers workshops on DALI. A training room has been created for this purpose, and equipped with DALI control and operating devices, including a selection of Helvar products.

DALI WORKSHOPS DIAL has recently created a 3-day DALI workshop, in which participants are provided with both the technical foundations and practical knowledge about the DALI standard. Experienced trainers convey immediately applicable technical knowledge. Several practical exercises cover nearly every possible application, up to interfacing with higherlevel automation systems. For this purpose, DIAL has specially designed a classroom with two workplaces, which are equipped with DALI components from Helvar, among others. Here, the participants learn how to plan and program DALI systems.

“

Helvar can be used regardless of the manufacturer, which was an important criterion in our selection process. Moreover, the high quality and scalability as well as the wide range of the portfolios speak for themselves.

The Helvar has been actively involved in the development of DALI since its introduction in the early 2000s, and it has one of the most comprehensive ranges of DALI products on the market. These facts were decisive for DIAL. "Helvar can be used regardless of the manufacturer, which was an important criterion in our selection process. Moreover, the high quality and scalability as well as the wide range of the portfolios speak for themselves," said Carsten Schulz, Building Technology Team and Trainer at DIAL GmbH. "Only in this way can we ensure the high standards of our courses and optimally pass on our knowledge."

THE DALI STANDARD DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an internationally established standard on the market, which was developed for digital lighting control. DALI makes planning, installation and maintenance substantially easier, resulting in significant cost savings. At the same time, the interface is so versatile that lighting scenes can be established or changed without any rewiring. The Helvar router system works according to the Ethernet standard, which makes it possible to link routers to each other, thus dissolving the usual DALI system boundaries. The high scalability and exchangeability of operating devices from different manufacturers make DALI a flexible system and a future-proof investment.

HELVAR DALI PRODUCTS IN USE The Helvar DALI routers are an essential component of workplace equipment for the DALI training at DIAL: Ten DIGIDIM 910 routers and a 920 Imagine router are in use. In addition, there are broadcast controllers, sensors, interfaces, dimmers, control modules and panels (touch, I/O) as well as Helvar LED modules and LED drivers for tunable white applications. The DIGIDIM 910 routers are control units for max. 128 DALI control gear and controllers. Helvar's DALI concept is based on the multi-master principle, so that both DALI devices and DALI control components, such as control panels, daylight sensors and motion detectors, can be integrated via the DALI line. The Imagine 920 router (DMX) and the HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 19

control module 474 (0-10V / 1-10V) are used to convey the integration of third-party systems on DALI networks to the trainees. The Helvar routers can be integrated into building management systems over TCP/IP. The employed uSee module allows monitoring, system and emergency lighting control, as well as the recall, modification and saving of lighting scenes in the Helvar router system via a browserbased interface using stationary or mobile devices. The lighting control solutions are scalable for almost all building sizes and applications thanks to their modular design and the use of open communication standards, thus

making the work of lighting designers, installers and system integrators considerably easier. "We are delighted that such a reputable company as DIAL has chosen Helvar products for the DALI workshops," says Christian Wein, Managing Director of Helvar GmbH. "There is increasing demand for LED lighting solutions, with a parallel need for effective lighting controls – in which DALI plays a central role. That's where Helvar comes out on top, with its expertise and comprehensive portfolio."

DIAL GmbH DIAL GmbH is a service provider for lighting and building control in LĂźdenscheid, Germany. The company offers a wide range of services under the motto: "Better architecture through light and automation." This ranges from lighting design and research via seminars and workshops to the proprietary planning software DIALux. In addition, light measurements on lamps and lighting products are performed in accredited laboratories, and tests are conducted on DALI, KNX and BACnet products.

Sushi B Restaurant in Milan Italian Japanese fusion controlled by a 360° sensory experience In late 2014 a new Japanese restaurant “Sushi B” opened its doors in the heart of the historic city centre of Milan. Surrounded by designer shops, fashion boutiques and concept stores, the new restaurant has the perfect setting for its stylish food. Helvar was chosen as the technical partner for the lighting control and management system.

THE ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT Sushi B’s architectural concept was a collaboration between architects Yukio Ishiyama and Nobuhiko Shimada for Studio Garde, Italy and Stefano Corò and Nicola Pellizzaro for Merotto Milani. Merging the Italian setting with Japanese hospitality and cuisine fused together these two cultures to create a unique dining experience.

right ambience. The main objective for the lighting project was to create a feeling of wellbeing in a relaxed and calming atmosphere.

Leading up to the mezzanine floor this intimate and elegant space is host to “teppanyaki”, a style of Japanese cuisine which sees chefs cooking food on a large iron griddle, to the delight of the diners, who are seated around it. Proceeding down to the lower floor the sushi counter which is six metres long dominates the main area and displays a variety of sushi on a counter made of cypress wood. Using pre-set scenes, lighting levels are adjusted for the varying requirements of the restaurant throughout the day, such as lunch and dinner, meal preparation and cleaning when the restaurant is closed.

All the rooms feature indirect LED lighting which enhances and defines the architectural elements, emphasising perspectives and trajectories. LED spotlights are used over the tables and work surfaces. The same design concept was also applied outside, where the vertical green wall illuminates the entire outdoor area, reflecting the light of the luminaires. In this area metal halide lamps are used to generate the amount of light required to support vegetation growth.

THE LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEM BY HELVAR The three different areas in the restaurant are managed with a Helvar DIGIDIM Router system. Using pre-set scenes, lighting levels are adjusted for the varying requirements of the restaurant throughout the day, such as lunch and dinner, meal preparation and cleaning when the restaurant is closed. The restaurant staff can manually call up the pre-set scenes using the Helvar TouchPanel, connected via Ethernet to a Helvar router. The TouchPanel is a high resolution colour, fully interactive 3.5” LCD touch screen that manages the lighting control systems and allows the user to automatically set multiple scenes based on schedules, or repeating sequences.

needs. The luminaires focused on the green wall require a constant light level; this is achieved with the time control set in the restaurant. The restaurant’s priority for lighting is to create a warm, calming and relaxed atmosphere. Helvar’s lighting solution shows that in addition to this it is essential to have a lighting management system that can also offer energy efficiency and reduce unnecessary lighting, which is typical when completely manual control is used. " A DALI lighting control system was specified, so Helvar were a natural choice. We needed to make very efficient use of the limited space, so the compact design and advanced functionality of the Helvar system let us set different lighting scenes and reduce energy costs by dimming and switching off lights that have been left on unnecessarily. " explains the lighting designer Sergio Rigato. " We have always liked working with Helvar, and are glad to be working with them on this project. Thanks to their professional approach and technical expertise, they are willing and able to be flexible when plans change," continues Stefano Corò, "the use of a Helvar lighting management system has allowed the restaurant Sushi B to optimise all the equipment, reduce energy usage and to have different scene sets suitable for each area".

The programming can also be changed in a simple and intuitive way in order to meet the restaurant’s changing HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 19

Akademiska Hus Optimises Energy Efficiency with Helvar

The Centre of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, VHC, is a unique, newly built facility at SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. The new building accommodates skilled veterinaries, veterinary students and top-level veterinary medicine researchers. The property is owned and operated by Akademiska Hus, a company with very strict energy requirements. To reach its energy efficiency objectives, yet have a flexible solution,

Akademiska Hus opted for the Helvar Router System for the property's lighting control.Akademiska Hus ranks among the largest Swedish property companies. The company builds, develops and manages properties used for research, training and innovation purposes. “Our largest tenants in the Uppsala region are the Uppsala University, the University of Gävle and the Swedish

University of Agricultural Sciences. In total, we manage some 600,000 square meters of real estate,” says Thomas Hanson, electricity officer at Akademiska Hus Region Uppsala.

SLASHING POWER USE Akademiska Hus has chosen to take complete responsibility for power consumption in its properties and not just keep a focus on power consumed for the purposes of property operation. This is why they are working to reduce their power consumption and environmental impact in close cooperation with their tenants. The objective is to slash the amount of power they purchased in 2000 by 50 % by 2025. “We see potential for slashing power consumption across the entire property and are revising everything – power, HVAC, ventilation, lighting. Insofar as lighting is concerned, it is HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 19

Helvar not only helps us minimise power consumption in the properties under our management but also offers a number of smart features.

quite clear that we need some sort of control to meet our energy efficiency objectives. We want to stick to the DALI protocol, which is why we have opted to engage Helvar’s router system as lighting control provider for all of our properties. It is easier for us if we have one and the same type of system in all properties. We have also looked at other suppliers' systems, but we were not particularly satisfied,” says Thomas Hanson. The first place where we had a Helvar router system installed was at the University of Gävle in 2005. Apart from VHC, the system here in Ultuna is also installed at the BioCentre, the Soil-Water-Environment Centre and most recently at Ulls Hus.

MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES VHC is made up of six interconnected buildings, with a total area of some 53,000 square meters. The area comprises lecture halls, group activity rooms, training laboratories as well as more specialised premises such as stables and anatomical theatres. “This facility is unique in a number of ways,” says Björn Dahlin, Installation Team Leader at Rejlers, the company which designed the lighting control. First of all, this is the largest installation we have ever built and, secondly, the number of requirements it conforms to is unique because there are so many different activities in the same system. “Helvar's system provides great opportunities as each constituent component is given an address and can be assigned a purpose. Each room is quite simply assigned a functional description. Since everything happens at software level, this leaves tremendous options for future changes, e.g. in luminous flux, etc.,” says Björn Dahlin. The features used in Helvar's system include absence detection, daylight compensation as well as lighting control from AV equipment and fire alarms. "Absence detection works in the following way: for example, when you go into your office, you must actively turn on the lighting. When you leave the room, lighting is reduced to 10 per cent after 20 minutes and then goes off completely. As for daylight compensation, we set a minimum value and

when there is enough daylight in the room, lighting is kept at a minimum, may be just 10 per cent or so. Using these two features, we can save maximum power from lighting. The system also gives us the option to control lighting from the AV equipment so that lecturers can easily dim or turn off the light in accordance with pre-programmed scenarios. Helvar's system is also linked to the fire alarm which makes it possible to automatically illuminate all corridors and evacuation routes if an alarm is triggered.

23

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 19

FLEXIBILITY WITH ADDRESSABLE UNITS The person in charge of the VHC project at Helvar was Hans-Göran Johansson.“We supplied more than 100 Digidim 910 and 920 Routers, a large number of 311, 312 and 313 sensors, different push buttons as well as a 503 AV unit that links the AV system and DALI. All units in the system have their own address and are linked via a bus system. The addressability of all units makes the system flexible. It is also easy to modify the system, e.g. in the event of future reconstruction,” says Hans-Göran Johansson.

The system was put into operation and programmed by Sallén Elektriska using Helvar Designer software. “We are satisfied with Helvar's Router System for lighting control.” Helvar not only helps us minimise power consumption in the properties under our management but also offers a number of smart features. Since the system is flexible, it is possible to additionally adjust and optimise the system over time. We are already under way with a new project at the Segerstedt Building in Uppsala where we will also install Helvar's system," concludes Thomas Hanson.

CONTROLLING ENERGY SAVINGS AND COMFORT IN THE WORKPLACE Istituto Centrale delle Banche Popolari Italiane is located in Milan and is used mainly as offices. The new lighting system needed to fulfil two demands; to monitor energy consumption and control energy saving as well as to ensure a more comfortable working environment. Silvano Bresesti, Head of Energy Systems and Service at Stelline Real Estate SpA said “The previous lighting solu-

tion included the more traditional lighting control switches and didn’t include a DALI management system. This non flexible lighting solution made it impossible for users to adjust the lighting levels”. Helvar has been asked to set the lighting control system in some open space areas for office use, in particular one on the ground floor and two on the first floor.

25

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 19

THE LIGHTING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM BY HELVAR: RELIABILITY, FLEXIBILITY AND COST SAVINGS Each of the three open spaces controlled by Helvar’s system are split into several light groups, comprised of several luminaires equipped with DALI ballasts, that through the DALI protocol, are connected to a larger network managed by Helvar DIGIDIM Routers . Each luminaire is equipped with a multi-sensor for presence detection and a constant light feature to collect all the information needed for the automated management of the lighting system. Each area has a control panel which can be used to adjust or turn on and off the lights manually when needed. The monitoring of the lighting system is managed by Helvar TouchStudio software and connected via Ether-

net to Helvar routers. TouchStudio makes lighting management intuitive and user friendly and allows facility managers to have a centralised control of the entire system and the possibility to set scenes in a very simple way according to everyday or extraordinary needs. It also allows monitoring the status of lighting groups and individual luminaires. The monitoring gives information if the lights are switched on, and in which percentage, off or malfunctioning due to end of life of lamps or disconnected, thereby facilitating ordinary maintenance. "As in previous occasions," reports Eng. Bresesti "Helvar has proved to be a reliable partner and has allowed us to achieve, through its lighting control systems, our targets also in terms of execution of the project."

ENIAC Award for EnLight Project EnLight, an energy efficient and intelligent lighting systems project, was finalised in November 2014 after three years of cooperative research and development. The project was funded by ENIAC and the project team consisted of 27 leading lighting companies, prominent universities and research institutes from five European countries, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands. The main goal of the project was to achieve more than 40 % energy saving comparing state-of-the-art LED lighting in real-life demonstrations. ‘The result of this project was an intelligent and energy efficient lighting system. Using breakthrough technology, the achieved energy consumption exceeded the set target without com-

promising any of the lighting features. Helvar focused on the development of a next generation Power Supply Unit with unprecedented high energy efficiency and performance’, says Max Björkgren, the Research, Quality & Technology Director from Helvar. Helvar, together with other project members, has won the ENIAC Innovation Award 2014 for the Enlight project.

The presenter of the award, Dr. Andreas Wild, stated that the EnLight project was exemplary in bringing together key actors in a project of significant size (more than 41 M€ R&D investment) to achieve results of genuinely high value to the partners.

New SELV 60 V Drivers Helvar has released a range of SELV 60 V rated drivers for flexible luminaire design.

below 60 V at any time allowing for an open and more flexible luminaire design.

The new range of 50 W drivers are designed to work within luminaires where the modules cannot be protected and isolated but can be touched. The touchable part of the luminaires can be left unprotected as long as the driver output and the voltage over the modules will not exceed 60 V.

Helvar has now published three new constant current SELV 60 V drivers in the 50 W range: • LL1x50-E-CC • LC1x50-E-CC • LL2x25-E-CC

Helvar’s new 50 W range is SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) rated ensuring the output voltage remains

Now a frequent association with Helvar, the drivers' efficiency stays at 0.90 even though the constant current output is as high as 1050 - 1400 mA.

The LL2x25-E-CC driver has two independent output channels allowing for loads of different sizes between the channels. This greatly increases the number of alternative combinations from modules to the output and therefore provides additional freedom to design.

New Hybrid Dimming LED Driver Helvar has introduced a new generation for dimmable LED drivers utilising the state of art "hybrid dimming technique". The first product in the series is LL1x10-42-E-DA Dimmable DALI LED driver. Hybrid dimming capable products can be dimmed both on current reduction dimming (higher dimming range), and on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming (lower dimming range). Current reduction dimming is a very efficient dimming technique for products dimmed only on higher range, e.g. 20 % – 100 %. On lower range, the current reduction dimming can have a negative impact on the light quality, causing e.g. uneven light output, or colour temperature variation.

dimming technique. This offers a high quality of light throughout the dimming range. To guarantee a high quality of light this driver is using high PWM frequency of 1 kHz. This is one of the highest PWM dimming frequency on the market. Luminaires equipped with Helvar LL1x10-42-E-DA LED drivers are completely free of 100Hz light flicker.
