Helvar Tunes in for Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, London, UK
Helvar has supplied a sophisticated, human-centric lighting control system to The Leadenhall Building studio of famed international architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) to help enhance the office environment, improve comfort and boost performance. The Helvar solution is designed to change colour temperature and intensity throughout the day to reflect the natural circadian rhythm. HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
In the main and central space of the studio, RSHP and world-renowned lighting designer Speirs + Major, who have collaborated on a number of projects together, opted for an innovative lighting system that incorporated colour-tunable LEDs, so that the studio could benefit from lighting that more closely reflects the natural circadian cycle of colour temperature and intensity.

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
Iain Ruxton, Associate at Speirs + Major, said that “both RSHP and Speirs + Major were keen to explore the use of colour-temperature tuneable white light in the studio, with the aim of adding a level of physical and psychological comfort to a space where the team often work long hours. The facility to mimic (or to deliberately differ from) the natural circadian cycle of colour temperature is a hot topic in lighting, so the chance to try it out in a fast turnaround project, with innovative architects as clients was a great opportunity.”
“
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Studio has been shortlisted for a LuxAward 2016.
This required an advanced lighting control system that could adjust the colour temperature smoothly throughout the day, based on a pre-determined profile that corresponded approximately to the behaviour of sunlight, moderated by the atmosphere. Helvar supplied eight of its innovative Imagine 920 routers that support its Intelligent Colour technology, the system that, based on the DALI Type 8 Colour Control, was responsible for the LED lights. This enabled the team to develop the exact lighting programme that RSHP wanted, and provide the most comfortable environment, based partly on staff feedback.
On the entrance door Helvar supplied a DIGIDIM 924 Touch panel, which enables staff to operate the lighting, turning it on and off, and pause the lighting system’s progression through the natural stages of sunlight. The DIGIDIM 924 touch panel is ideal for the high end office environment, as it has a range of finishes to blend in with the interior design aesthetic, and a high quality LCD screen.
Iain Ruxton commented that “the initial programming of the control system delivers an approximation of the natural circadian cycle, changing slowly from warm in the early morning to cool through most of the day, to facilitate concentration, and warming up again in the late afternoon, providing visual comfort as natural light fades and the office moves into an evening working mode.
To help generate energy savings the 311 ceiling PIR was installed in the meetings rooms and print room and 312 multisensors were installed in the main open space.
The intention is to monitor how the team finds the lighting, and to adjust the behaviour of the system and experiment with different cycles if necessary.” HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
In the comms room, print room and modelshop Helvar installed their 137 DALI compatible control keypads to provide simple sceneset capabilities.
Helvar’s advanced lighting control, working in collaboration with RSHP and Speirs + Major, has created an office workspace that is sympathetic to the needs of its employees, and provides an environment that echoes the natural world.

Art Meets Light Didrichsen Art Museum in Helsinki district is a significant icon in the Finnish art field. The villa, originally built by Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen for themselves and their art collection, is one of the leading art museums in Finland. HOUSE OF ART The villa is not only a place for art but also a piece of art itself. Its build was completed in 1957 by the seaside in Kuusisaari, located 7 kilometres from the centre of Helsinki. Well known and internationally renowned Finnish architect Viljo Revell designed the villa for art. The modernistic and minimalistic interior sets the scene for Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen’s growing collection.
“The extension, which later was to become the museum wing, was originally planned for private use as well. However, during the construction it became evident that it could have a larger role”, says Mrs. Maria Didrichsen, Chief Curator of the museum. In 1965 the art museum was opened, the extension is the last finished work of Viljo Revell. “Viljo Revell was a genius,
11
HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
he was able to take the best out of the constantly varying light and the surrounding nature”, says Mrs. Didrichsen sitting in an area that was originally the living room, with huge windows looking out towards the sea. The flood of light comes in from every direction, and yet it is always scattered, never direct sunshine. This is essential to show the art off in its best light!
TECHNOLOGY IN THE SERVICE OF ART The architecture of Revell has endured time. However, a condition survey carried out in 2010 showed that there was a severe need for renovation. The museum was thoroughly renovated and reopened its doors in 2014.
RENOVATED STRUCTURES “The wooden panels of the ceiling were taken down, thoroughly cleaned and reinstalled”, says Maria Didrichsen. “The museum had very strict requirements as the primary target was to preserve the original spirit of Viljo Revell. In this respect the results are excellent, visitors don’t even notice the changes.
the requirements of the most demanding art lenders. We are now set up to take on even the most demanding exhibitions”.
CONTROLLED PLAY OF LIGHT An essential part of the renovation was to renew the lighting system. The enormous windows that look out towards the Finnish seaside lets the light pour in. The light constantly changes at different times of the day and with the four seasons. This was a big challenge for the installation of the lighting system as the original structures and materials were to be maintained. In the former living quarters, the original luminaires were mounted into the ceiling structures; they were also equipped with 100 W incandescent lamps, the heat load was far too strong for art. The first time the lighting system was renewed it was with halogen downlights in the beginning of 1990’s. Every step of the renovation and all the chosen solutions were dictated by the building. The new lighting system was to be fitted in the structures made for the original lighting.
The second requirement was to improve accessibility, stairs were removed and an elevator added. The former caretaker’s dwelling gave room for a spacious reception and museum shop. A terrace was added and the public sculpture garden renovated. A pathway leads a visitor through the unique outdoor exhibition.

Hanging or protruding fixtures were out of the question. The whole system was built with LED luminaires. The light output of the DALI-controlled spotlights and wall washers can be controlled individually for each piece of art. When a new exhibition is being built the lighting can be changed according to the artworks and structures. Downstairs the museum holds its unique collection of artefacts from ancient Oriental and Pre-Columbian cultures. The small Italian LED lights in the vitrines have been attached in rails. Their function is optimal, and the level of light has been adjusted with care.
FUNCTIONAL, ADJUSTABLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE There is no need to turn the lights on and off any more. Everything is automatised so if there is no movement in the space the lighting dims down and eventually turns off. The Helvar lighting system measures the used energy and reports the hours of lighting.
The whole system is digital and every luminaire has its own address. The user interface has been configured like a web-page. You may monitor and adjust the lighting scenes from the screen on all floors, luminaire groups and even per individual luminaire. The system can define exactly when the luminaire is switched on and at which light level and for how long. Every luminaire is adjusted according to the artwork. Graphic art requires a totally different light from an oil painting. A graphical Niagara user interface has been tailored for the museum lighting. When the exhibition changes, the levels of light are adjusted after the arrangement is completed, and is then saved as the new exhibition status. When the exhibition ends, the original user interface can be restored. The system shows how long each lighting scene has been on. If needed, lux hours can be followed per each artwork.
"Every luminaire is adjusted according to the artwork. Graphic art requires a totally different light from an oil painting", tells Mrs Maria Didrichsen, Chief Curator of the museum.

Lighting up spectacular libraries
The new lighting system had an important role in the renovation of this heritage building. After a successful lighting project carried out in the Helsinki university library, Kaisa-talo 1), the decision makers at Helsinki University felt
that Helvar was the obvious choice to provide its renowned stunning lighting control to the National Library as well. The National Library, which is the oldest and largest scholarly library in Finland, was looking for a lighting

system that could be individually and flexibly controlled as the need for light changes frequently. The library organises regularly book sales and fairs, which require brighter, focused lighting in some areas as at the same time the other parts of the library are lit according to normal daily lighting needs. DALI lighting system was chosen for this job due to its capabilities in fulfilling the varied requirements.
HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
‘The Helvar lighting control system makes it easy to modify the lighting levels to which luminaires are lit, or dimmed, at any one time. This is important as flexibility is needed and the rooms can be used for many different functions, all requiring different lighting settings’, comments the Lighting Designer Sanna Forsman from Granlund Helsinki office. Helvar DIGIDIM Router system was installed, giving the library staff the ability to control almost 800 luminaires individually across the building. The 910 DIGIDIM Router system offers an easy to install, scalable and adaptable lighting control system that is the building block in many large buildings. Jukka Riikkula, Helvar Country Manager for Finland comments: “Having control over this size of a lighting system means that the National Library has complete confidence in its ability to change the lighting scenes instantly, whether it is for a book launch, tour of the library or general daily use. The library previously didn’t have any sort of lighting control, which made all changes in the lighting very inefficient. By using Helvar, we estimate that the library has saved 70-80% of its energy used in lighting.”
16
Fact corner: The establishment of the National Library dates back to year 1604, since 1845 the library has located in the same, just recently renovated building in the centre of Helsinki. The National Library is the oldest and largest scholarly library in Finland. It is responsible for the collection, description, preservation and accessibility of Finland’s printed national heritage and the unique collections under its care. The library’s collection covers 115 shelf kilometres of material; 3 million books ad 3 million other publications. The collection includes also a couple of special collections, which belong to the UNESCO world heritage site. Conservation and digitising the collections is one of the library’s most important responsibilities.

The lighting also works in tune with the natural daylight, meaning it will be dimmed to a low level, or turned off when there is plenty of natural light available. System will gradually increase the level of light as the sun sets, reducing used energy and creating an ambient lighting experience at any time of day. Using lighting control in a heritage building can make the most of its intricate detail by highlighting its architecture in the most flattering light. It also helps to reduce running costs, which is essential in a public building such as a library that needs to keep its expenses as low as possible. The result is a visually stunning, yet efficient solution that the National Library can make use of for many years to come. Helsinki University library, Kaisa-talo, was presented in the Helvar News 2 / 2012 1)
"By using Helvar, we estimate that the library has saved 70-80% of its energy used in lighting", says Jukka Riikkula.

Basilica Superiore of Saint Francis in Assisi From September 2015 Basilica Superiore of Saint Francis in Assisi shines in a new light. A prestigious group of lighting professionals were involved to implement this amazing lighting project. The designer was engineer Marco Frascarolo from FABERtechnica and the Lighting control and management system was delivered by Helvar. The project’s main objectives were to manage the equilibrium of luminance between frescoed surfaces and architecture, in order to enhance aesthetic and constructive quality of the spaces along with visitor’s visual comfort and artworks conservation. The second goal was to control the energy efficiency both short and long term.

around the world, Basilica Superiore has been opened by Pope Innocenzo IV in 1253. Cimabue, a Florentine painter and creator of mosaics started the enormous challenge of decorating the walls with pictorial scenes, working in the transept, the cruise and the apse. Giotto an Italian painter and architect from Florence in the middle ages, painted the St. Francis Stories in the nave, revolutionising the way to conceive pictorial space and figures. In 28 frames Giotto illustrated the life of Saint Francis painting three dimensional characters to bring out the emotion in the story. A cycle of paintings in modern art tells the story from history to present day, from a conservative and fruition point of view it can be appreciated even more thanks to the new lighting. HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
THE LIGHTING CONCEPT The lighting project of Basilica Superiore in Assisi, has been curated by Engineer Marco Frascarolo from Fabertechnica together with Fra Mauro Gambetti and Sergio Fusetti, respectively Padre Custode and curator of holy convent of Assisi. Given the historical and artistic importance of the frescoes, the main objective has been to improve the lighting conditions using warm LED sources and restricting levels of luminance on paintings at 80 lux. It was also important to ensure the conservation of both pictorial surfaces, morphological and spatial features of the building was preserved through the lighting levels minimising the visual impact of the luminaries thanks to small light sources and their setting. The chandeliers, upon the client’s request have been maintained to the same shape and position and have been optimised to control the light flow in order to reduce dazzle, improving visual comfort for visitors and during religious celebrations. One of the main objectives was to ensure energy saving. For this reason the installed luminaries are provided with the latest generation LED sources reducing maintenance and energy consumption costs, guaranteeing quality and colour stability over time. The new LED technology allows a high level of customisation, thanks to optimised optical internal geometry and the system flow of the devices according to the different areas and uses of the Basilica.
22
THE LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM BY HELVAR In the Basilica Superiore, the lighting control system replaces sunlight and is designed to work in night mode, thanks to the control and light management system. Helvar designed various light scenes for different functions and needs throughout the day helping to significantly lowering consumption in the presence of natural light, this has had an estimated energy savings of 75% per annum. The different areas of the Basilica are managed from a single centralised system which is controlled by Helvar’s 905 DIGIDIM Router that through the DALI bus acts on luminaires, controlled via DALI by three 458 dimmers regulating the light output. Helvar’s lighting control system specifies dimming for individual luminaries, recalling preset lighting scenes. The system can be switched on and off via a control panel and can be easily controlled to select the desired lighting scenes. Helvar’s intervention has significantly contributed to achieve the desired energy saving standards and at the same time has strengthened the emotional impact inside the Basilica through the lighting scenes. 100% flexibility, scalability and energy efficiency are the goals that Helvar aimed for in this project. Marco Frascarolo says: “One of the main LED feature – connected both to the flexibility of the lighting system and to energy saving - is its natural bent to regulation: in this application the work done with Helvar has enabled us to exploit in the best way this feature”.

Cruise ship guests expect the best when they travel, particularly on a vessel as luxurious as Harmony of the Seas.
“Using Helvar lighting control was a simple decision for us,” says Andreas Köhler of Wärtsilä FUNA. “Harmony of the Seas is like a floating city, so we needed a lighting control solution that is simple to install and gives us all the capabilities we need on a project of this size and complexity. We have worked with Helvar on a number of Royal Caribbean projects and always found them a fantastic partner. The customer support is also second to none, which can be very important on challenging projects.” Using Helvar technology across its fleet of ships meant that Royal Caribbean was able to feel confident that the lighting control system would work smoothly and that there would be consistency across the fleet. For Wärtsilä FUNA, the key was also familiarity; the team knew from past experience they could rely on Helvar’s superior lighting control to provide dependable performance and deliver exactly what was needed in a challenging installation. Wärtsilä FUNA also knew that it could rely on Helvar’s fantastic customer service for help with any issues that arose during the project.
HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
The sheer size of Harmony of the Seas presented a significant challenge. The ship carries thousands of luminaires across luxury suites, bars, restaurants, and outdoor spaces, and each individual fixture had to be managed by a lighting control system. A vast array of LED luminaires from different suppliers were used to light the different areas of Harmony of the Seas, which was a challenge in itself. Helvar’s control system had to manage spotlights, pendants and track lighting alongside many other types of luminaires, providing the total flexibility Wärtsilä FUNA needed to work with all these different light fixtures. Helvar’s lighting system controls a wide variety of public and private spaces throughout the ship, including the numerous restaurants and bars, as well as the theatre and the luxury suites. Wärtsila FUNA installed 67 pieces of Helvar’s DIGIDIM 4 channel leading edge and trailing edge dimmer and 261 pieces of the Helvar DIGIDIM 4 channel 1-10V dimmer, so that staff in the restaurants and bars could set the lighting at exactly the right level. Wärtsilä FUNA also

specified Helvar’s Imagine control panels, which combine an easy to use interface with the ability to control every aspect of the lighting. The outdoor lighting is controlled centrally from the bridge using modern graphical user interface also supplied by Wärtsilä FUNA using Helvar components. Cruise ship guests expect the best when they travel, particularly on a vessel as luxurious as Harmony of the Seas. The restaurants on board feature top chefs and provide unrivalled dining experiences, catering for everything from the finest steaks, Italian cuisine and, of course, seafood. Helvar’s lighting control system was crucial to creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, regardless of the venue. Helvar’s comprehensive and sophisticated lighting
control system can accommodate any kind of special requirement, whether that’s creating a relaxed ambience in a luxury suite or an atmospheric mood in a bar, and can also integrate with DMX lighting control which is essential when controlling the theatre on board. Controlling the vast number of lights throughout the public areas on the world’s largest cruise ship was a significant challenge, due to the enormous scale of the project. Helvar’s lighting control solution easily rose to, and exceeded, the challenge, because it offers reliable performance, is easy to install and maintain, and has the capacity to achieve what Wärtsila FUNA needed: sophisticated and comprehensive control of the lighting.

system; however, due to the extreme number of DALI consumers that had to be controlled individually, the client chose Helvar’s Imagine router system allowing a seamless connection to the existing media controls.
INTELLIGENT LIGHTING CONTROL WITH HELVAR COMPETENCE The Helvar lighting control system is used in various exhibition areas, including the conference centre, catering room and shop. One important requirement of the project was to centrally control the several thousand luminaires and actuators, which normally go far beyond the limits of the DALI system. The Helvar Imagine routers used in this setup have two DALI lines each for all 64 DALI subscribers, and up to 100 of these routers can be networked; 41 Imagine routers are currently in use at DRIVE. Another advantage of the routers is the IP-based integration media control via the open HelvarNet protocol. Thanks to the Helvar Designer Software suite, scene programming and group assignment were easy to accomplish. Employees can easily call up the corresponding scenes via the touchpanels enabling them to change the scenes for different lighting situations. In addition to the light scenes for normal operation, the majority of the controls are automated in the background, such as daylight control and motion sensors. The latter are used in areas that should only be illuminated when there are visitors or employees. DIGIDIM PIR Motion Detectors have been installed for this task. These offer a detection HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 22
range of 7 m with a mounting height of 2.80 m. In unused areas, the light is dimmed to a predetermined standby value.
EASY AND COMFORTABLE OPERATION FOR DIFFERENT USERS The conference centre is used for a variety of purposes. Whether it's for meetings, conferences or training sessions, there are appropriate rooms equipped with the latest media and presentation technology. Media, building services and lighting controls must be easy to use for a wide variety of users. That's why there's intuitive operation using touch panels with unique labels for the individual functions. In the background, all the components are networked via the central media control. The interface uses the IP-based HelvarNet protocol. For example, with the "Presentation" function, the light is dimmed by a predefined factor, the blinds are closed, and the projector and screen move into position. All DALI functions as well as the IP interface have been programmed using Helvar Designer Suite software. "Helvar was chosen due to the immense number of DALI consumers that needed to be individually controlled, as well as for its comfortable programming and connection to the media control system. The clear system structure and the easy-to-understand software tool enormously simplify the integration and programming. The professional Helvar support was another plus," said Christian Schroeder, Key Account Manager of Amptown System Company GmbH. "We have already had very positive experiences with the Helvar system in other installations, which is why we chose the Finnish lighting specialist."

"The lighting project at the Paderborn head office is a complete success. Energy savings of up to 75% and optimum illumination is a result that has exceeded our expectations."
"We are proud that ASC is using Helvar Solutions and our service. Especially in a prestigious project such as DRIVE, where maximum reliability and networking with other systems are important, we are able to show off our qualities to the full," adds Christian Wein, Managing Director of Helvar GmbH.

requirements for the new lighting: reduce operating costs and increase the working comfort of employees. Marco Colombo continues: "Cost is always an important issue, so all investments exceeding five years certainly will be considered carefully, but we are fully satisfied with the Helvar solution. Using the latest LED technology and Helvar’s lighting control system, we have been able to take

The lighting design is part of a larger plan, thought to create a work environment that is already in line with what could be the standard in 2020.

advantage of natural light from outside to complement the optimised lighting inside”.
THE LIGHTING CONCEPT The lighting project managed by Alessandro Baresi, kicked off from a preliminary study of the economic cost of ownership with a target to achieve efficiency and sustainability. NTK made the decision to use high efficiency dimmable LED light sources controlling them with a lighting control system. A pilot project was set up and work was carried out at the newest NTK plant. The results from the project were more than satisfactory, so NTK decided to move on to other areas and the lighting update was also rolled out through the entire headquarters. The new lighting system has proven results on how it can be both more effective and efficient in terms of energy savings and visual comfort.
NTK – A COMPANY WITHOUT LIGHT SWITCHES Both plants are split into two areas, manufacturing spaces and offices. These areas are managed with a single centralised DALI system which is headed by Helvar routers - 910 DIGIDIM ROUTER and 905 DIGIDIM ROUTER – the system having control of all luminaires and utilising the
features of constant light and presence detection sensors. The lighting can be controlled in an efficient manor in all production and office environments. As the end result NTK became a company without light switches. Here everyone can enjoy the same visual comfort and work in an environment that offers the highest standards in term of quality light. Helvar’s lighting control system communicates with the alarm system. When the alarm is switched on at night the control unit automatically sends a message to switch off the lighting throughout the site. The same automation happens in the morning when the alarm is switched off, the lighting will be turned on. This shows that Helvar solution is not a stand-alone solution, but it can communicate seamlessly with other systems. After installation a training programme was put in place for the maintenance manager enabling him to run and manage the lighting control system. Alessandro Baresi says: "Using high performance LED luminaires alongside Helvar’s lighting control system has given us the ability to control the lighting to the specific needs of each environment, not forgetting the visual comfort, accessible to each employee”.

Helvar upgrades its Tridium IP driver for the new Niagara 4 platform Niagara 4, or N4, is the 4th generation software platform produced on the Niagara framework by Tridium. Our previous driver, the HLC-IPDRV, was hugely successful allowing the Helvar Router System complete scalability as well as the ability to add graphical visualisation and seamless integration onto projects. N4 hosts a cutting edge user interface helping the user find and visualise data to maximise building efficiency. The introduction of templating and tags should also shorten integration time
as well as increase the user experience. The new driver, called the HLC-N4R5, carries over the all great features from our previous driver, such as automatic router discovery and DALI feedback and reporting. Combine this with the enhancements N4 brings and the
solution enforces Helvar’s position as a leading provider of lighting controls systems. The new driver licence will be sold in bundles of 5 routers please call your local sales office for pricing.
