The 2nd Annual Conference of Society for Hand TherapistIndia was held at Hotel Fortune Inn Valley View, Manipal from 25th Nov. to 27th Nov. 2011 along with the 35th Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand Conference.

The Hand Therapy section of the conference was hosted by Department of Occupational Therapy, Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal, with Mr. Shovan Saha, OT as the Coordinator and Ms. Sumedha Kamath, OT as the Assistant Coordinator. Society for Hand Therapy, India Newsletter

The meeting at Manipal was a significant one, as it led to the first formal interaction between ISSH and SHT-I. The build up to this meeting was facilitated by continuous interaction between Dr. Sabhapathy [President, ISSH], Dr. Rath [Secretary, ISSH] and Shovan Saha [Vice-President, SHT-I] . The discussions helped to clarify certain mutual doubts and it was agreed upon that ISSH will acknowledge that SHT-I as the body for Hand Therapy in India. The Executive Committee of SHT-I was represented by Hemant Nandgaonkar, President SHT-I; Shovan Saha, VicePresident and Prabhakar Chavan, Joint Secretary.

Fifty hand therapist delegates from different parts of the country participated in the conference which had open parallel sessions with the hand surgeons where therapists were allowed to attend the surgeons’ sessions and vice versa. Following the conference all the delegates and presenters were handed over the certificate of participation and presentation. Society for Hand Therapy, India Newsletter

The first day, 25th November 2011 started with registration followed by a CME on CURRENT CONCEPTS IN HAND THERAPY from 9am-1pm with presentations on Recent trends in Hand Rehabilitation by Mr. Ganesh B.M. Asst. Prof., Dept. of PT, Manipal; Neurodynamics in Upper quarter dysfunctions by Mr. Ranganath Gangavelli, Asst. Prof., Dept. of PT , Manipal; Scar Management in Hand by Dr. Arun Maiya G, Prof., Dept of PT, Manipal and Bands, Balls and Balance for Hand & U/E Rehabilitation by Mr. Hemant Nandgaonkar, Asst. Prof., Dept. of OT, Seth G.S Med College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai. This session was chaired by Mr. Shovan Saha, Assoc. Prof., Dept. of OT, Manipal. Society for Hand Therapy, India Newsletter

The 2nd day, 26th November 2011 was Free Paper Presentation. Six papers were presented. Dr. Charu Eapen from Mangalore presented a paper titled Clinical and ultrasound evaluation of the CTD of thumb in young cell phone user; Ms. N. Aruna from Coimbatore presented a paper titled Physiotherapy following nerve transfer for shoulder & elbow movement after BPI; Mr. K. Gobinath from Coimbatore presented a paper titled Evaluation of spastic hand in patient with cerebral palsy; Ms. S. Shivapriya from Coimbatore presented a paper titled Physiotherapy following post burn contracture release on dorsum of hand, Ms. Rupinder Jit Kaur from Amritsar presented a paper titled Functional outcome of flexor tendon injuries at wrist and distal forearm level and lastly Mr. Ranganath Gangavelli from Manipal presented a paper titled Reliability and diurnal variations of flexor carpi radialis H-reflex latency and its correlation with median nerve vibration thresholds. This session was chaired by Mr. Hemant Nandgaonkar, Asst. Prof., Dept. of OT, Seth G.S Med College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai.
