Sustainability Key Icons

Throughout this brochure you will find a number of different icons to help you choose the best products for your packaging needs.

RECYCLABLE

The process of converting used material into a new product. However, there are limits to how many times a product can be recycled. Most plastics can only be recycled 2-3 times and paper between 5-7 times before the material can no lonnger be used. Glass, metal and aluminium can be recycled endlessly.

COMPOSTABLE

Compostible products are designed to break down in industrial composting conditions, together with organic waste. This process creates nutrient-rich soil improver for farmers’ fields. These products are not intended for home composting.

Top Tips for Packaging & Food To Go

• Limiting your packaging choices to 3 or 4 different items can save on cost and space

• Sustainability is important to many customers, consider the sustainability element of your packaging and how it can be disposed of responsibly

• Correct ingredient and allergen labelling is essential to meet HCCAP and Natasha’s Law

• Aluminium foil is one of the best economical and easiest ways to keep food warm, protecting against light and oxygen to help food maintain its heat for longer

Plastic Tax

What is the Plastic Tax?

The plastic tax came into effect from April 2022 at which point any ‘finished’ plastic product that does not contain at least 30% recycled content is included in the tax. This includes biodegradable, compostable and oxo-degradable plastics.

Examples subject to plastic packaging tax...

The tax is designed to provide an economic incentive to businesses to use recycled material, generating a greater demand for it, as well as increasing recycling rates. This would ultimately have the effect of reducing demand for fossil fuels.

The rate of PPT will be at £200 per metric tonne of plastic and will only effect those who manufacture or import 10 tonnes or more of plastic packaging over a 12-month period in the UK.

Plastic tax only applies to packaging where plastic is the primary material.

What is the Single-Use Plastic Ban?

Having come into effect on the 1st October 2023, the latest plastics ban will be placed on a range of high polluting single-use plastics.

Following on from the ban on plastic straws, cotton buds and drink stirrers in 2020, the ban will mean businesses can no longer supply, sell or offer single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers. This also includes EPS (expanded polystyrene) products. Businesses will instead need to use alternative options.

The ban on these items will include online and over-the-counter sales and supply, from new and existing stock.

To help businesses make the swap as simple and seamless as possible, we have started researching some great alternative product sustainable swaps to help you.

Sustainable Alternatives

The Single Use Plastic Directive means that where sustainable alternatives are easily available and affordable, SUP products were banned in the Republic of Ireland from 3 July 2021.

Understanding the types of Food-To-Go packaging materials

Paper, Board and Wood

Technically rPET and PET are the same material at a chemical level, the “r” simply represents that it’s been recycled.

This is a unique feature of rPET as one of the only materials in the world which can be sent through the waste stream and then brought back to food grade and food safe quality again.

Polypropylene is made from 'virgin material' and is recyclable, shatter resistent, lightweight and has a very low carbon footprint as it takes relatively little energy to produce.

It is food safe with great barrier properties to keep food fresher for longer, thus reducing food waste.

LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) has good impact strength and excellent tear and crack resistance.

It can be found in every day household items such as plastic wrap, shopping bags, frozen food containers and squeezable bottles.

HDPE is harder and is widely used in plastic packaging, such as for plastic bags, plastic wrap or frequently used for milk bottles.

Polystyrene is a versatile plastic used to make a wide variety of consumer products. As a hard, solid plastic, it is often used in products that require clarity, such as food packaging.

Polystyrene is also made into a foam material called expanded polystyrene (EPS) which currently doesn't have a recycling stream in the UK.

Made from reclaimed sugarcane, bagasse uses the dry fibrous residue left once sugarcane has been pressed for juice.

It makes an excellent substitute for polystyrene foam which is often used to make conventional fast food takeaway packaging and takes many years to break down.

Bagasse is 100% compostable, meaning in a matter of weeks it will break down completely and can be used as fertilizer to grow something new.

Paper and board are both versatile materials used to package food for example, pizza boxes, paper bags, wooden cutlery.

Paper offers many eco friendly benefits to those who use them. It can be continually re used and is both recyclable and biodegradeable.
