A Spirit of ... What’s a Reddie?

Pride A Spirit of...

Henderson athletic teams were known simply as the “Red and Gray” until a campus contest in 1906 chose the name “Red Jackets” which was descriptive of their bright red jackets and socks. The student newspaper quickly adopted the nickname, “Reddies,” and within a couple of years “Reddies” became the most frequently used title for the team. Generations of students have been steadfast in the thought that no mere mascot could symbolize the Henderson do-or-die spirit. It is this unconquerable spirit the students showed when they vowed to stay together and rebuild the school after a devastating fire in 1914. That spirit, which ultimately triumphs over insurmountable obstacles, is known as the “Reddie Spirit” and all students and alumni are celebrated as “Reddies”.

Knowledge

It’s the biggest reason you go to college. To learn. To think. To broaden your perspective and gain the kind of hands-on experience and skills that’ll set you apart. At Henderson, our bachelor degree programs are designed to take you beyond learning, and instead empower you to bring that knowledge to life. It’s a cool concept. We’re pretty sure you’ll think so too.

Organizations

When it comes to having heart, we take it to the extreme. You’ll see what we mean on your first day of freshman orientation, when all the new first-year students gather on the South Lawn to have their class picture taken in the form of a giant heart. You’ll sense it in the friendships you make and in that unmistakable Reddie spirit that defines our collective character. And you’ll feel it in the way that you’re accepted here for exactly who you are.

Into politics? Sports? Math? Maybe you’re just into being a leader in general. Either way, no matter what your interests are, we have the student organizations that will empower you to take them to the next level. In fact, we have more than 90 of them—any of which offer a great way for you to deepen your knowledge, sharpen your skills, and make new friends.

Student Rec Center

Impressive. That’s the word that best describes our $6.9 million, 48,000-square-foot Charles D. Dunn Student Recreation Center, which was just opened in 2009. You’ll enjoy endless access to three basketball courts; a climbing wall; an elevated running/walking track; and brand new fitness, cardiovascular, and weight-training facilities.

Our Campus

We go way beyond simply talking about the importance of technology. We live it. In fact, we’ve invested more than $50 million in the construction of new facilities and the renovation of existing buildings in the past decade alone. This, coupled with our location in Arkadelphia, Arkansas—complete with beautiful mountains, bountiful trails, clean rivers, and crystal-clear lakes— means you’ll enjoy a setting like no other.

Greek Life

If you’re looking for opportunities to lead, to serve the community, to volunteer, to compete, to make new friends, or even start building your professional network, nothing quite compares to a sorority or fraternity. You’ll form bonds and make connections that last a lifetime.

Intramurals

Get in on the action. Meet new people. Have loads of fun. That’s what intramurals are all about at Henderson. Whether you’re into dodgeball or ping-pong, basketball or golf, beach volleyball or baggo, you’ll find this is a great way to tap into your competitive spirit.

College is expensive. There’s no way around that fact. Well, actually, there is. Henderson offers an outstanding value and a huge range of financial assistance options and scholarships to help you and your family offset costs. Remember, college is an investment in you and your future.
