School of Business From the Dean… I have to confess that I am still enjoying the honeymoon at Henderson State University School of Business. During the Spring semester, we awarded scholarships to deserving students, inducted top students into Beta Gamma Sigma, concluded another great year for our Business Mentorship Program, witnessed the birth of the School of Business Club, inducted a great alumna into our Hall of Fame, and watched 53 students receive their degrees. As Spring turned into Summer, we were successful in our recruiting efforts and hired two new faculty in management. Heart Start, a series of Summer orientation sessions, is much larger than in past years and we are anticipating a thirty percent increase in our Fall enrollment. We have been working very hard to strengthen our relationships with the community colleges in our area. Consideration is being given to offering our business core curriculum in several locations. We are proposing a general business degree for the nontraditional student wishing to finish a degree started in years past. An entrepreneurship class will be offered in the Fall. Students in the class will form the nucleus of a business plan competition to be initiated at HSU. Jeffrey L. Hamm Winners of the competition will submit their business plans to the Arkansas Governor’s Cup competition. The number of prerequisite hours required of students without an undergraduate business degree for admission to the MBA program are being reduced slightly. I continue to be excited about the prospects for the future. I invite you to read the highlights on the following pages.

Student Accomplishments...

For the second year, a team of HSU business students won first place at the regional Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Global Investment Challenge in Memphis. They “outperformed” the University of Arkansas and the University of Memphis, according to Dr. Frank Smith, assistant professor of business. The team returned to the national competition in New York City in the spring but did not advance. The team included Heather Szflenski, Isaac Fox, Ben McCaleb, and student coach Ben Sivertson.

The School of Business Club (SOBC) was created to hold combined meetings of the Economic Society, the Finance Club, the Marketing Society, and the Society of Accountants for the purpose of unity and synergy. SOBC held its first annual Business Networking Social on April 8. Business professionals, students, and faculty rated the event as a big success.

Tiffany Templeton, a junior business marketing & communications major from Sherwood, was crowned Miss HSU 2010 on March 18. Templeton competed against 16 other contestants for the title.

Fifteen Henderson State University students were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society that includes the best business students in the world. The Henderson chapter inducted the new members during a ceremony on April 8.

Aviation... The Redbird FMX is the aviation department’s new state-of-the-art flight simulator. In addition to the realistic controls and instruments, the simulator has six LCD computer monitors that form a wraparound visual system. It also includes real motion in three axes giving movement in pitch, roll and yaw. “The 200-degree wraparound visuals allow the pilot to look out the side windows as well as the front windscreen,” said Troy Hogue, assistant chief aviation instructor. Hogue said the new simulator enhances the learning experience through realism. “Adding motion, along with the improved graphics, will give the student a level of realism that is not possible in the older simulators,” he said. While the aviation student trains in the Redbird, the instructor can sit in the other seat and instantly change the flying conditions. “The simulator has an instructor station that is essentially a tablet computer,” Hogue said. The Arkansas Department of Aeronautics provided 90 percent of the funds to purchase the $100,000 simulator through a matching grant.
