School of Business From the Dean… The first time freshman class this fall is larger (827-see the traditional Heart picture on the next page) than last year’s record number (813). Total enrollment is 3779. This is certainly good news. Our classrooms, dormitories, and dining facilities are stretched to the limit. In the School of Business, we anticipate that these recent increases in the general enrollment will translate into more business majors in a year or two as they move beyond their liberal arts core curriculum. It is our mission and goal to educate and graduate increasing numbers of students who will lead economic development in Arkansas . We have begun to consider the possibility of offering a Jeffrey L. Hamm certificate in entrepreneurship. The Business Plan competition sparked interest among our students, especially the cash prizes awarded at the HSU, Business Battle of the Ravine, and the Governor’s Cup levels. We are currently offering two courses—Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Applied Entrepreneurship. Construction on campus is energizing. Renovations to Foster Hall are done and Womack is undergoing a “retro” remodel to return it to its original look (and size). A new dining facility is soon to begin. A new business building would make a HUGE difference in our program—recruiting, retention (students and faculty), and education. Help us make it happen! Inside this issue…

AVIATION
Direct Hire Program
Aviation Offers Distance Learning
The Department of Aviation recently signed an agreement with Pinnacle Airlines. Students graduating from the Professional Pilot Program will automatically be placed in Pinnacle’s hiring pool for Pinnacle, Mesaba, and Colgan Airlines without the traditional recruiting and interview process. Pinnacle was willing to enter into this agreement because they believe that “the qualities of the individuals who successfully complete the aviation program meet or exceed all standards with which we measure pilot qualification and professionalism.” Henderson is one of only five schools nationwide to be selected for such an agreement. Congratulations!
High school students in Arkadelphia and Hot Springs Lakeside can get a head start in the aviation profession through a new distance learning program offered by HSU in partnership with the Dawson Education Cooperative in Arkadelphia. Students can begin taking the courses in the 10th grade and accumulate credits toward their degree at HSU. Fifteen Arkadelphia students started the inaugural program last fall. Lakeside students joined the program this fall. The students will receive four hours of training in a state-of-the-art flight simulator. “The job market for pilots in the next twenty years is tremendous,” says Aviation instructor Troy Hogue.
SBTDC... Students Complete Projects with Small Businesses
Kelley Massey Director
For the Spring 2011 semester, the HSU ASBTDC led 17 faculty/student projects with approximately 75 HSU students and 17 small business clients. The projects included five different university classes with several student groups. The business classes that coordinated student projects this semester were Small Business Management, Fundamentals of Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship. Many of these courses enrolled both graduate and/or undergraduate students. Examples of some of the projects the student groups prepared (with recommendations): a business plan, marketing plan, feasibility study, market and industry research, and leadership style analysis. "The students, professor, and the HSU SBTDC have helped me formulate a marketing plan for my business, Pecan Grove Bed & Breakfast. They have identified ways to utilize website optimization, social media, print media, other marketing to promote my business. Their insight has been very beneficial." Rick Brumley, Pecan Grove Bed & Breakfast
