Working in the Presence of God Spiritual Practices for Everyday Work Denise Daniels and Shannon Vandewarker
How do we invite God into our everyday lives? Working in the Presence of God discusses the incorporation of spiritual disciplines into the ordinary rhythms of everyday experience. God is already present and active, so by becoming aware of workday rhythms and focusing on where various spiritual practices might be implemented in our jobs, we can be transformed into Christ’s likeness through our work. We often think of spiritual practices as preparation for our regular lives; in comfortable spaces and ideal settings, we set aside time to hear from God. But what if we can engage in these practices in the midst of our regular lives, and particularly at work? This transformation takes place when we surrender our working lives to God, begin to hear his voice, accept his pleasure, and allow his guidance at work.

Science and Faith Student Questions Explored Edited by Hannah Eagleson
How does science enhance faith? Is God relevant in an age of science? Science and Faith: Student Questions Explored investigates the relationship between science and Christianity in a series of thoughtful and accessible articles written by experts. Chosen from InterVarsity’s Emerging Scholars Network blog, each chapter addresses common faith- and science-related questions. In part one, Science and Faith delves into why Christians should pursue scientific discovery, as well as the Bible’s viewpoint on scientific method and inquiry. Part two begins the conversation on the direct relevance of science to faith and how scientists who are Christians can talk to their colleagues about their faith, while part three discusses how conversations about science can take place between Christians. Finally, part four explores the history of science and the church and the question “How can the history of science encourage the church?”
Available October 1, 2019 Apprx. 136 pages • 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches Paperback 978-1-68307-236-2 • Retail $14.95 HP SKU: 072362 E-book

Since each reading is based on questions from real students, it may also be a resource for Christian faculty teaching the sciences. Contributors include Ruth Bancewicz, Gerald Rau, Greg Cootsona, Andy Walsh, and more. Target audience: Christian graduate students in the sciences; church small group leaders; Christian faculty teaching the sciences; and interested laypeople.

The significance of Jesus’ death is apparent from the space that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John devote to the Passion narrative, from the emphasis of many speeches in the book of Acts, and from the missionary preaching and the theology of the apostle Paul. Exegetical discussions of Jesus’ trial and death have employed biblical (Old Testament) and extrabiblical texts in order to understand the events during the Passover of AD 30 that led to Jesus’ execution by crucifixion. The purpose of this book is to publish the primary texts that have been cited in the scholarly literature as relevant for understanding Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. The texts in the first part deal with Jesus’ trial and interrogation before the Sanhedrin, and the texts in the second part concern Jesus’ trial before Pilate. The texts in part three represent crucifixion as a method of execution in antiquity. For each document, the authors provide the original text (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or Latin), a translation, and commentary. The commentary describes the literary context and the purpose of each document in context before details are clarified, along with observations on the contribution of these texts to understanding Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Target audience: New Testament scholars and professors; seminary and graduate students specializing in the New Testament; educated pastors and laypeople.

This book-by-book vocabulary guide provides an unparalleled resource for anyone interested in more effective reading and study of the Old Testament in Greek, commonly called the Septuagint. Aside from two full-scale specialist lexicons for the Septuagint, no other printed resource exists that provides concise and strategic guidance to the language of this important ancient corpus. With word lists organized by frequency of appearance in a given book or section of the Septuagint, this guide allows users to focus their study efforts and thus more efficiently improve their breadth of knowledge of Koine vocabulary. Furthermore, the vocabulary incorporated into the lists in this guide integrates lower-frequency New Testament vocabulary in a manner that enables the user to easily include or exclude such words from their study. Other key features of this vocabulary guide include carefully crafted lists that allow users to refresh higher-frequency New Testament vocabulary, to strategically study higher-frequency vocabulary that appears across the Septuagint corpus, and to familiarize themselves with the most common proper nouns in the Septuagint. Moreover, each chapter in this guide has been statistically tailored to provide the word lists necessary to familiarize the user with 90 percent of the full range of vocabulary in each book or section of the Septuagint. Target audience: Students, professors, pastors, or anyone interested in reading the Septuagint in the original Greek.

A Time for Sorrow Recovering the Practice of Lament in the Life of the Church
Edited by Scott Harrower and Sean M. McDonough
Six scholars trace the role of lamentation in the Old and New Testaments in A Time for Sorrow: Recovering the Practice of Lament in the Life of the Church, reflecting on the theological significance of lament, affirming the ongoing relevance of lamentation in the life of the church, and exploring its biblical roots and application in church practice. In a church era dominated by positive thinking and slick, upbeat “worship,” even mentioning the word lamentation is apt to cause a dismissive, disinterested shrug. But Christians still suffer, and this suffering is left mute when the church fails to integrate biblical lament in contemporary church practice. A Time for Sorrow looks to address this by recovering the biblical practice of bringing our pain before God in an honest and faithful manner. In this multiauthor work, learn about the role of lamentation in the Old and New Testaments, reflect on the theological significance of lament, and finish with thoughts on lament and pastoral practice today.

Echoes of Darkness A Survivor’s Story of Healing and Hope Jadie Hager with David Hager
A missionary family, a violent attack, and one woman’s brave determination to break free from trauma. Jadie’s story is one of forgiveness, hope, healing, and victory in Christ. When she was a young girl in the 1980s, Jadie (and her missionary family) experienced a brutal attack while on the island of Palau in the South Pacific. That one hellish night left her physically, emotionally, and spiritually damaged. Jadie had the choice to live the life of a victim or to walk the hard road of healing that leads to wholeness in Christ. Though she faced physical injury, emotional scarring (including avoidance, memory loss, and regression), and spiritual attacks (including hopelessness, lack of identity, flashbacks, night terrors, and paralyzing fear of a “man in black”), Echoes of Darkness is a story of hope. Only by learning her true identity in Christ, learning the true meaning of forgiveness, and learning how to rightly apply faith and her authority in Christ to her situation was she able to move from victim to victor and experience a life of true freedom and complete wholeness.

Echoes of Darkness, continued About the Author Jadie has lived a life of ministry from her early years as a missionary with her parents in the South Pacific. She met her husband, David, during an overseas discipleship training program, and they were married in 1996. Together they have ministered in active duty military and as local church pastors. Jadie’s story of victory in Christ has been a light to many as she speaks around the country and overseas at churches and conferences. Her favorite topics are forgiveness, hope, healing, spiritual authority, identity in Christ, faith, and marriage. Currently Jadie lives and ministers in Fort Collins, Colorado, with her husband and their four children. Endorsements No missionary story I have written is more heartrending than the account of the savage attack on the Beebe family in the islands of Palau. But as dark as the story is, the shining light of God’s forgiveness manifested through this wonderful family is an even greater testimony. In a day when so many are abused and greatly wronged, the message of Jadie (Beebe) Hager’s book is timely and will bring healing and freedom. I highly recommend this book to every believer, especially those who have suffered deep and enduring pain. —Randy Hurst, Communications Director, Assemblies of God World Missions Shortly after the vile attack on her family when Jadie was only eleven, Jadie’s parents told their story in the church I then pastored. I have never forgotten what Jadie’s missionary dad said that day to our church family: “The Bible does not say ‘We feel that in all things God works for the good.’ But rather, ‘We know that in all things God is working for the good’ (Romans 8:28). Our knowings must be deeper than our feelings.” Now, thirty years later, Jadie shares a riveting account of the violent assault and its aftermath—the journey toward wholeness and forgiveness, the good that God has worked. Echoes of Darkness is grounded in biblical truth lived out through experience. I couldn’t put her book down. It is a must-read for anyone who has experienced trauma, loss, violence, or injustice, or for anyone who seeks to minister to a loved one with deep physical and/or emotional wounds. —Dr. George O. Wood, former General Superintendent, The General Council of the Assemblies of God Though awful and appalling things were done to Jadie and her family while they were faithfully serving the Lord, Jadie’s story is one of victory, not defeat. She writes as a victor, not a victim. Her total trust in the Lord to redeem our heartbreaking experiences is revealed in sentences like this: “Our life is like clay. Clay that is left to the effects of the environment will become dry, then hard and brittle, eventually becoming useless. Clay that is surrendered to the Potter’s hand will be molded and stretched, but finally used for a purpose designed by the Potter.” You’ll want to read this book and share it with your friends and family. —John M. Iowa Ethiopia
A Missionary Nurse’s Journey Continues Jeff Barker
Following Sioux Center Sudan comes another historical account of Arlene Schuiteman’s missionary work. Iowa Ethiopia brings us to one of the world’s ancient cultures and the revolution that changed one woman’s spiritual journey . . . and nearly cost her everything. Now in her nineties, retired nurse and missionary Arlene Schuiteman is quiet, seemingly timid. She does not desire attention or fame. However, she has years of stories to tell about rambling across the fields of her Iowa family farm, settling on a Sudanese riverbank, climbing through the rugged hollers of Kentucky, and being swept away to the western mountains of Ethiopia. Iowa Ethiopia looks back at Arlene’s work as a missionary nurse in Ethiopia between 1966 and 1977, where she trained young men in the practice of modern medicine. Like in Sioux Center Sudan, Arlene’s inspiring stories have the power to transfix, pierce, and heal. Captivating and honest, they declare the power of God to us today in our ongoing efforts to be strong witnesses to Christ’s kingdom. The stories in this book have been collected from her journals and letters, and retold by award-winning dramatist Jeff Barker.

Joyous Faith: The Key to Aging with Resilience is beloved author Michele Howe’s newest resource for Christian women. It offers practical advice and spiritual encouragement to Christian women who are passing through the middle of life. During the midlife season, women may find themselves feeling unmoored or untethered; and often unsure of what this season of life (and the next) will be like for them. How do they maintain a passion for life? How can you adventurously navigate the unique challenges that only middle-aged women face? Joyous Faith is all about learning to navigate this uncertain season between midlife and old age with a robust faith, a sure hope, and a passion for life (even as bodies weaken and emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges continue to arise). Thirty chapters written in true “Michele” style contain encouraging Bible passages and relatable real-life accounts, as well as practical guidance, sample prayers, a “take-away action thought,” and suggestions for stepping out in faith.

Understanding the Creation In the Beginning… Menashe Har-El
Not many are as attuned to both the Bible and the biblical landscape as Professor Menashe Har-El was throughout his long and rich life. From an early age on, Har-El traversed the land of Israel, fascinated by the majestic landscapes he encountered and the treasures of nature that had been provided for humanity to use and enjoy. In Understanding the Creation, Har-El describes the land he knows so well: the forests, the mountains, the plains, and the hills, as they were when the land was first formed by the primordial tectonic activities that shaped the continents and the seas. From the stark, often daunting peaks of the Negev, to the verdant hills of Galilee and the distribution and uses of the trees and natural vegetation, Har-El leads us, Bible in hand, through that fascinating land of wonders.

This book helps us understand the uniqueness of families who serve others in many different capacities. Though the book does specifically address families that serve in the military, as firstresponders, and in other “front line” ways, it is applicable for EVERY family that is serving the Lord and others in their home, church, and community. This book is a great encouragement to be a family with the heart and commitment of Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Each devotional also includes “Frontline Tips” that address both families with someone on the frontlines as well as ALL families. Sample “Frontline Tips:” • Discuss the choice to serve in a more dangerous career because of God’s calling. • Make sure each child knows how to make an emergency call. Post the numbers in a place where every family member can see them. Target audience: Families with children of all ages.
