BRIEF My passion for design has been defined through my education at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design and professional practice which has allowed me to experience a breadth of project typologies, with a broad spectrum of scales and strategies. I have taken part in projects that have allowed me to flourish, work and operate in a collaborative environment. Creatively, I have always been interested in the juxtaposition of marrying the existing with new, the brutal with organic, expanding and pushing the experience of space, the boundaries between and blurring the perception of transition in between. I am captivated by the complexity of cities, people and society that allows for a theoretical approach and finding solutions to modern societies growing needs.

Oak Hedge Reisdence, a home designed around the celebration of the site by blending the exterior with the interior, while providing expansive living spaces. An open concept kitchen/dining spills into a spacious living room, opening directly to a new outdoor living space. Each bedroom and office is provided a direct connection to the exterior. Taking full advantage of the landscape surroundings. The selection of durable, warm, vibrant and honest finishes spill throughout the home - warm wood ceiling planes, bright tiled walls and underfoot with cool clay bricks bringing in a warmth into the public spaces. These finishes continue to spill out into the exterior spaces, dissolving the exterior wall making the resident feel a comfortable - both inside and out.

Bull Creek Residence, Situated in the quiet, historic, Allandale neighborhood, this site is in single family homes. With diverse landscape and typologies surrounding it, the Residence aims to celebrate this context by respecting the neighborhood scale and providing a large variation of exterior spaces. These private engagement opportunities offer a blending of public and private spaces, both within the home and around the site. Focusing linear connections and perimeter patios, this home is flooded with natural light from all sides. The heart of this design is truly the diversity of living spaces, from a quiet office to a special reading space. These various scaled spaces can all be opened up to one another, creating a rich living experience throughout.

Terry O’Lane, this project’s vision creates a balance between the existing industrial warehouse district with a social and comfortable living environment; threading residential and commercial moments will promote sincere connections and social engagement. To achieve this, the architecture focuses on two distinct characteristics: first, to carefully sculpt both the height and mass of the project in direct response to the diverse scales surrounding each perimeter. The second is to strategically cut into the building mass to create both public and private outdoor spaces, fluid pedestrian passageways, and an activated and inviting landscape. Along the streetscape, activated retail and true live-work units serve as a gateway to a public plaza creating a destination for its users as well as the community. As this site will be a key component in the continued renewal of Austin’s Warehouse District, it is essential to be sensitive to the varied surroundings while simultaneously celebrating its rich history.

Fortlandia, In its third year, Fortlandia at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, exists as yet another reason to get outside and enjoy the center’s gorgeous arboretum trail while trying out new concepts of “forts” that inspire play for all ages. Childhood play is so often focused on discovery — discovery of place, of material, and of potential creations. This type of discovery can be found at any scale, alone or with friends, and ultimately fosters imagination and interaction, even with strangers. This fort aims to tap into this type of play by establishing a series of strategic shelters, or territories, which can be continually defined and redefined by the interaction of its occupants. Derived from the game of pick-up sticks, this fort establishes a series of shelters, or territories, which can be continually redefined by its occupants. Layering reclaimed 36” diameter drainage pipe, and cargo net over custom steel frames, a dynamic and unexpected environment was created - one that offers opportunities for people of all ages to discover each territory in a variety of exciting ways.

HDG Architecture, created a new design for an original Moritz Kundig designed home on the South Hill in Spokane, WA with no detail overlooked in this reverent update. The owner bought the house in 2018 and it was in pretty rough shape. The lines were amazing and the way that it sat on the site was perfect, so HDG took the time to open up the living spaces and made the indoor-outdoor connection a big part of the homes appeal. Keeping to all the original lines of the house, HDG insured that the feeling Mr. Kundig had attained all those years ago was once again felt throughout the entire home. Monochromatic whites and deep wood tones were utilized to better allow the lines of the house to do what they are supposed to do. A 17 foot bright white Silestone countertop separates the living and cooking and lounge area and doubles as a seating area for up to 16 people. We incorporated LVP throughout the main floor for durability and look while keeping the majority of the original lighting and chose a deep blue for the exterior of the house, coupled with ultra-bright white soffits and ceilings with a new 2,500 SF 3.5” cedar decking around the home pays homage to the siding of choice for this era.

Founded about 60 years ago - the existing office required a much needed renovation for the workspaces, conference rooms and breakout areas to retain talent and match up with the modern era. This project was a tenant improvement within an existing building and office space where the goal was to create a connective design between current branding, office environment and the evolving office culture by establishing open and productive working environments with a mix of creative and collaborative areas. Cosmic Cowboy Grill, is a new fresh-casual concept bringing the latest trends in food preparation to the Inland Northwest. The restaurant was focused on serving healthy, farm-to-table, and gourmet dishes including vegetarian, vegan, paleo and low-carb dishes. The owners concept - a Cosmic Cowboy is a person equally at home in the country or the city, embracing new ways of doing things (Cosmic) while remembering the values that make us great (Cowboy). The mission of converting an antique and wig store to a restaurant serving “good food for good people” was certainly not easy but an exciting and challenging mission to convert a rundown store to a hip restaurant intermingling the cosmic with the cowboy. A honest design with an emphasis on cleanliness, rustic cowboy appeal and a clean, contemporary, cosmic vibe was the goal.

The tenant improvement which includes the project managers office, waiting/entry area, a new design for their workout area, conference and flex space in the main building and a completely redesigned lunchroom with an adjacent break room for their shop employees. The Steamplant, formerly known as the Washington Water Power Co (WWP) has been an iconic and functional part of Spokane history for over 100 years, providing steam driven heat to all residents. In the late 80’s to early 90’s it experienced a conversion to leasable spaces of which a restaurant and bar would become one of the central and focal points of the newly converted space. This recent renovation is the latest in it’s evolution and goal to maintain a current, functioning, seamless and aesthetically timeless look. With an entirely new kitchen, staff, menu and brand - the restaurant relaunched with a new atmosphere that harmonized it’s rich history with the modern era. Every aspect of the restaurant was taken into consideration from new custom designed light fixtures, a custom bar with a designed beer tap and tables for full cohesion to the new booth seating and graphics as well. This project needed close attention to details given the history and iconic stature of this national historic building - collaborators were with FABER design build for furniture, Kalispel Upholstery and Helveticka, a creative branding group.

Developed by a local family, the project is intended to be utilized by the surrounding community, as well as vacation and business travelers. The project site is approximately 5 acres divided into two sections by Highway 97. TDIndustries, a leading mechanical and plumbing contractor in Texas, relocated their Houston office to a pristine 10 acre green field site in northwest Houston. With a strict budget but desire for future expansion, the 58,000 square foot multi-building complex is assembled with efficiency in mind. The ‘tilt-wall’ construction method is put on full display, with variations in color and texture used to bring a human scale to the long expanses of concrete panel walls. The design is grounded in the company culture of teamwork and partnership, and features open work areas and no private offices. Ample glazing and narrow floor plates allow natural light deep into the work zones. Collaboration areas are spread among departments to allow for impromptu meetings and group work sessions, while enclosed meeting rooms allow for more private conversations and are denoted by material transitions and dynamic graphic treatments. The previously undeveloped site necessitates the building operate almost entirely off the grid, and features ample landscaping, on-site water harvesting, and a nature preserve with water features and a walking trail.
Second Floor Plan
As a collaborator, I took part during the very beginning of this project, working through the conceptual phase, research and data gathering, analysis, adjacency, selection of interior materials, and visualizations.

[Tasks] I worked on this project at the design development phase, and to assist the development of the project for building permitting. The phases included architectural design, physical models, visualizations and administrative tasks. Afterwards, I worked on developing a detailed 3D model for the clients and a graphical visualization that represented the intent of the design and how we re-purposed the existing structure and space.
ETC Montessori, a former school facility re-purposed into a calm, minimalist space for a family run consulting firm. Existing elements to remain were rendered in neutral white, into which new elements were inserted to satisfy programmatic standards. New material components (wood, steel) retain their natural qualities, enlivening the interior in a way that acknowledges the past while looking forward.

Walker Engineering, a ground-up project on a previously undeveloped site includes 20,000 square feet of office space and 10,000 square feet of warehouse storage, along with new driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, an entry court and a detention pond. The design takes advantage of cost-effective tilt-wall concrete construction, while providing a unique identity by accentuating entry features with company branding using rhythmic patterned colored facades. Numerous strategies for energy and efficiency were utilized such as orientation, interiors full of natural light, cooperative work spaces, and high-efficiency LED lighting. Sculpted electrical conduit features are on display in public areas further integrating company trade and brand for this prominent electrical engineering and construction company.

Inside/Out is simultaneously an exhibition about Houston’s Fifth Ward community and a structure-in-waiting. The title describes both the way in which the design research is organized and the way in which the built structure will function once it is re-constructed within an existing building – supporting a dilapidated shotgun storehouse from the “inside-out”. The exhibition is a cross-disciplinary eort between the Interior Architecture program (INAR) and the Community Design Resource Center (CDRC) at the University of Houston, in collaboration with numerous community partners and stakeholders. The exhibition showcases research developed during the Collaborative Community Design Initiative, an eort organized by the University of Houston’s CDRC in 2013-2014. This research provided the context for a design/build studio co-taught by adjunct professors Jason Logan and Josh Robbins in the INAR program. Working with community partner Olivet Missionary Baptist Church in the Fifth Ward, the INAR 3501 spring studio considered the adaptive re-use of a “shotgun” storehouse into a public reading room and e-resource center. On the outside of the structure, visitors will find a selection of the research used in the studio to frame both the history and the context of the Fifth Ward. This out-side information influenced the design development of the inside structure throughout the semester. Inside the structure, visitors will find design process documents, models, and fabrication drawings developed during the three phases of the spring 2015 INAR design/build studio. These documents track the evolution of the design and how it is integrated into the project site.

Food Security Creating neighborhoods where the healthy choice is the easy choice begins with the basics, access to healthy food.
Neighborhood The strength and stability of a neighborhood impacts the health of residents through social engagement, ownership, and empowerment
Safety A healthy community is a safe community, and safety is influenced by how well a neighborhood is cared for.
Priorities
Education Education is the foundation for our future, ensuring quality school environments and life long learning opportunities enhances economic success and community health.
Public Space Neighborhoods designed to promote healthy lifestyles have quality public spaces and the infrastructure to make it easy to walk or bike as part of a daily
Strategies Weave Weave together programs that create economic opportunity and build on strengths , history, and culture of the neighborhood.
Productive/ Social
Stack Introduce high-density and mixed-use development.
Grow Connect community gardens, schools, and corner stores, with new farming and garden sites to improve food security.
Thread Improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along Lyons Ave. to encourage active modes of transportation.
Patch Enhance existing park and trail infrastructure with public amenities.
In the historic block configurations typical of the 5th Ward, the backyard was used as a productive space for cooking, cleaning, and any other household chores to be done throughout the day. In the evenings, residents would move to the front porches of their densely spaced shotgun houses to tell stories, share news, and recharge for the coming day. This communal urban typology promoted a healthy, social neighborhood, and laid the ground work for the studio.
Link Create new pedestrian networks that link existing parks, civic centers, and trails throughout the neighborhood.
Fill Develop new housing on vacant lots that accommodates both younger and older residents.
Redeveloping the Lyons Avenue Corridor Using design strategies developed by the CDRC, the studio redeveloped the Lyons Ave. corridor to accommodate a variety of new housing types as well as pedestrian spaces and paths. By using a combination of dense mixed-use program and zones for public space, a more active and pedestrian friendly street edge is possible. To the North and South, new infill housing that combines units designed for younger, as well as older residents is built around a new network of paths, trails, and gardens to restore the neighborhood.

Ventilation Strategy
Due to the recent demolition of adjacent structures, the existing building possesses several opportunities related to interior/ exteri-or space, and passive cooling strategies not typical of historic shotgun structures in Hous-ton.
Openings are created on the East and West facades to take advantage of prevailing gulf winds. On the West façade, the opening is enlarged to provide a connection to the side yard and garden. Farmer Street

In the existing building, the ceiling joists and the ceiling substrate act as a structural diaphragm. This stabilizes the building, but it creates a uniform interior spatial configuration that is indifferent to the conditions of the plan and the surrounding context. By conceptually twisting this structural diaphragm at the entry, the space is opened to the roof rafters, expos-ing a 16' tall space and the opportunity for natural daylighting.
In the rear of the building, the same twist is done in the opposite direction to promote circulation from the entrance out onto a deck in the side yard. Like the entry, the space is opened to the roof rafters, exposing a second 16' tall space and another opportunity for natural daylighting.

Screening the Back Door The twist of the ceiling surface is increased to screen the back door and create an area for storage shelving. A shipping container will be placed at the back of the site to anchor the deck and side yard. Farmer Street

The design began in late January 2015, where the shotgun storehouse is located and began research on the history of the Fifth Ward neighborhood. The historical research was later used to develop a time-line that places the community research within Thicken Frames a broader historical perspective of the neighborhood. We were then asked to individually develop concepts for an economical structure that would concurrently stabilize the existing building from the interior and provide a new spatial environment that could both accommodate much needed archival storage and act as a community center/event space. Section profiles are offset based on structural requirements
Conceptually similar to a medical stent, which supports a vein from the inside, students initially worked within three structural themes for supporting the building: Thickening, Bracing, and Buttressing. x
