MOUNT PLEASANT RESIDENCE MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: REMARK STUDIO TYPE: RESIDENTIAL This residential project was an exercise in programming levels of activity and usage into a small backyard. The rear of the property abutted a tidal marsh and had significant slope, as compared to the typically flat landscape of Charleston. These features created a unique opportunity to terrace the backyard to make full utilization of the limited space possible. I worked on this project from conceptual design to construction. SULLIVAN’S ISLAND RESIDENCE SULLIVANS ISL AND, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: REMARK STUDIO TYPE: RESIDENTIAL Located a block away from the Atlantic Ocean on idyllic Sullivan’s Island, the design of this residential property revolved around two components: strict tree protection and mitigation rules and the threat of rising ocean waters. As a team we met with arborists about the existing tree canopy and pinpointed problem trees, solidified a design to mitigate for those losses and presented to a board at the city for approval. The design of the project focuses around the clients plans to raise the house, so we worked with the architect to create a series of terraces that would provide separate spaces while also create a bulwark against flood waters.

DANIEL ISLAND RESIDENCE MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: REMARK STUDIO TYPE: RESIDENTIAL This small residential design was the first project I took from conceptual design to completed project. I worked directly with the client and landscape contractors as well as submitted the design to the Architectural Review Board. I modeled the project in the computer, drafted the design, drafted the construction details, and made visits to the site to problem solve with my team. This was an invaluable project for me because I was able to participate and lead objectives from start to finish. The completed project is a simple, enhanced backyard patio and improved drainage.

This project is located on a very unique site on the north side of Kiawah Island. Spanning nearly 3.5 acres and occupying both tidal marsh and barrier island ecosystems, the landscape design for this project was elaborate and challenging. The new residence, which is currently under construction, will sit on a hill, rising nearly 12 feet quite drastically at the front of the home. This created a series of design problems which we solved through terraces, gabion walls, and fine grading. We coordinated with civil engineers on a bulkhead wall around the waterfront side of the property and worked very closely with the architects to create a lowcountry estate.

Of utmost concern was flooding so the client wanted to build the house on a hill which created opportunities to define outdoor “rooms�, like the terrace of native planting shown on the right. All of the plant material used is native to barrier islands and will preserver in the salty air. Below: Creating a grand entrance was important on this site. I detailed a formal entry gate for the drive.

DANIEL ISL AND RESIDENCE- MODERN L ANDSCAPE FIRM: REMARK STUDIO I created a series of renderings and models for this modern marshside property. The front entry a tiered, custom tread concept that was planted with native palms. The clients were keen on blending the modern architecture with a lowcountry plant palette and modern forms in the landscape. I helped move this project to the Architectural Review Board and it is currently under construction.

CAPTAINS ISL AND RESIDENCE FIRM: REMARK STUDIO
Another coastal, modern home, this home was designed with Scandinavian influences, which we mirrored in the landscape. The result was a clean and sleek design. Native grasses in the front of the house set the architecture in a natural setting while the backyard is more refined. I helped develop the design, grading plan and details, and I developed the renderings.

THE MORRIS UPPER PENINSUL A CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: REMARK STUDIO TYPE: COMMERCIAL This multi-use development on the Upper Peninsula of Charleston is representative of the array urban infill projects taking place in the downtown area. The Morris will transform a dead space next a rail line once into a vibrant urban center with office, residential, shops and restaurants all linked by a central plaza. The road adjacent to the project has long been dangerous for cyclist and pedestrians and the design of the site is intended to link the network of neighborhoods to the space and create a safer pedestrian experience. Our firm focuses on native planting that serve as an educational component to the design as well as reduce maintenance and watering needs. One of my personal efforts was pushing our proposed rain garden along the street through approval with SCDOT and coordinating a maintenance agreement for the rain garden. This area is highly prone to flooding but it is still often looked over as an problem that costs too much to deal with. Our design focused on remaining diligent in mitigating the floodwaters.

The rain gardens run along the top of the property and are planted with native, water tolerant plants. The courtyard is intended to enhance the pedestrian experience and draw people into the space.

Construction details I created for the plaza and for the rain garden. FOUNDRY POINT UPPER PENINSUL A CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: REMARK STUDIO TYPE: COMMERCIAL This large scale project consisted of 5 apartment buildings arranged in a unique form to create a variety of experiences and move away from the traditional grid of apartments. This arrangement create ample opportunities for the site design to really set the tone for the whole development. My central role in this project revolved around a complicated pool design, layout and grading which I worked on a team with to solve the design problems. I was able to be involved in the construction observation phase of the development and pool and interact with contractors and landscape contractors.

144 Cannon is a unique urban infill project located on the peninsula of Charleston. Incorporating workforce house and commercial space into a corner parcel, the design was intended to activate the surrounding area. I was involved in the DRB process for this project and was responsible for graphic production. I learned a lot about how the design process works in Charleston and the rigorous procedures that are taken to bring projects to life in such a historical place.

I was responsible for many iterations of renderings for this project. I used SketchUp, Photoshop and hand graphics to create a series of graphic explorations in materials, color, and site representation. I also assisted in the creation of a 3d model using a SketchUp and Form Labs 3d printer. Our team surveyed the site and analyzed topography in order to create an accurate model showing the massing of the design. It was important for this urban infill project to blend in with the vernacular architecture, while providing for a modern precedent for housing on the Charleston peninsula.

VICTOR HOPENSTEIN’S BREW LAB UPPER PENINSUL A CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: SYNCHRONICITY This brewery project was a great opportunity to work hand and hand with architects TYPE: BREWERY and landscape architects to produce a comprehensive design and unified brewery FIGURES: 4,493 SF experience. I assisted in moving this project from its initial phases to final design through the Charleston TRC, DRB, and BAR process. The landscape seeks to blend a seamless experience from indoor to the outdoor patio and activity lawn.

Perspective of site.
Midtown Community Park is a park design created by the Synchronicity landscape team. The three concentric rings provide natural plantings and respite while an amphitheater/ stage, sunken open lawn, and architectural elements activate this space. Working with our landscape and architecture team, I was responsible for moving the design from the conceptual sketches to CAD level detail. I assisted in all aspects of this project from graphic production to construction details. I built the model in SketchUp, produced hand graphics, moved the design into CAD, coordinated with lighting engineers and worked in unison with architects.

River Run is a large scale development along the Stono River. The central tenants were to maximize lots, connect the development with open space, and most importantly to mitigate all runoff on site. As part of a team, this design was taken through the TRC, DRB and PUD process.

SECTION ELEVATION Due to concerns of rising sea levels and our sites location along the tidal Stono River, our team had to rigorously assess the hydrology of the site. Working closely with engineers, our team produced a series of graphics to highlight our successful capture of runoff from our site such that our design enabled surrounding area to be unaffected by this development. These graphic were presented to the city council by our team and entered into the extensive PUD documentation process. 40

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND RESIDENCE SULLIVAN’S ISL AND, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: SYNCHRONICITY TYPE: RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE PLAN FIGURES: 13,236 SF A landscape plan for a coastal residence was developed to compliment a home renovation. Working with the architecture team, the design seeks to highlight the expansion of the home and create a lush, tropical environment. Using native plantings, tolerant to the conditions of the coast, the landscape was used to create enclosure, balancing open lawn with tropical plantings. As part of team, I helped take this project from conceptual designs to construction drawings. The design is currently under construction.

OLD VILLAGE POST HOUSE MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA FIRM: SYNCHRONICITY TYPE: MIXED-USE/RESTAURANT FIGURES: 7295 SF This project involved the renovation of a historic bed and breakfast into a revitalized restaurant and inn. As part of the landscape team, our design intent was to allow the restaurant on the bottom floor to outflow into a lush patio. As part of a team, I was responsible for existing conditions surveying and assessment, concept ideation, plant selection, site furnishing selection and graphic representation. This project required working closely with the architecture team in creating an overhead structure for the patio concepts, as well as addressing seating/serving requirements for the flow of operations in the restaurant. Our team had to move this through a number of design review boards including the Old Village Design Review Board.

I was charged with developing concepts for a pool and courtyard in a residential development in Tioga, Florida. Working closely with the project architect, I took the project from a conceptual phase to a final design. I was then charged with producing an initial planting plan. I chose a native plant palette to enhance the experience of the place and to serve the natural landscape.

on a the cliff side of an old quarry. The terrain required a detailed study of the site. Our team worked with the grade to layout 58 lots intended for high-end homes connected by greenspace.

The site plan involved many iterations to maximize the number of lots while working within the confines of the steep terrain. I created cross sections across multiple lots to understand the homes types that could exist given the terrain. Also, road layout had to comply with San Antonio slope codes.

Lots were broken up into three categories according to the slope: Uphill, Downhill, and Cross Slope. This determined access to the home and orientation of the house.

CROSSTOWN CONCOURSE ROOFTOP GARDEN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE FIRM: KERSEY/WIKE & ASSOCIATES TYPE: PENTHOUSE ROOFTOP This unique project was part of the redevelopment of a former Sears Building in Midtown, Memphis. This private penthouse is located on the roof of a one million square foot building and offers sweeping view of Downtown and the surrounding urban canopy. I worked alongside the principal landscape architect to assist in all phases of this project. My central role was to create renderings for the client to visualize the space. Shade analyses were critical in this scenario due to the varying weather conditions on the rooftop. I performed a number of three dimensional studies on the shade structure before the client was satisfied. I met with landscape contractors, general contractors, and interior designers to coordinate efforts on this project. I went on site visits throughout the construction process and was able to see the final design realized.

ATHENS CITY HALL PLAZA DOWNTOWN ATHENS, GEORGIA Situated in downtown Athens, the City Hall plaza and streetscape redevelopment sought to revive and modernize the areas adjacent to City Hall, as well as activate the streetscape. The overall site is designed to create a linear experience that allows for multiple opportunities for engagement. Zones of gathering, rest, and activity are carefully balanced throughout the streetscape and reinforced by the linear forms.

Banding subtly delineates space within the plazas, allowing for a range of experiences within a unified area. Much of the space is defined through the use of ground plane textures which alternate between slate bands, gravel, groundcover, and planters. In doing so the plaza encourages the entire space to be explored by users.

EAST GEORGIA STATE COLLEGE SWAINSBORO, GEORGIA 2016 EPA Rainworks Challenge Honorable Mention This project began in 2016, when I led a team of six to create a green infrastructure and stormwater management plan. The following spring I was charged with creating a master plan for EGSC, a two year institution, to enhance campus life, plan for growth, and improve the relationship between the college and the town of Swainsboro. My plan was centered around creating a dense, traditional campus layout and was ultimately selected as one of three concepts to present to the president of the college. Challenged with developing a scheme focused on density, traditional quads were created to enhance the academic experience through a balance of building layout and open landscape. In designing the campus to revolve around density, an intimate, walkable campus was created. The organization of the buildings and connective green spaces provide continuity between greens, buildings, and the natural landscape. By concentrating development, the surrounding environment is protected and used as natural asset to the college for educational and recreational purposes.

VILLAGE CONCEPT
In order to enhance the town-gown relationship, a “village� concept was created to draw the community to the campus as well as serving as a social gathering point for students and faculty. This concept includes a boardwalk around an existing lake and the introduction of shops, restaurants, kayak launch, canopy walk, and plazas, all of which activate the entrance to the college and provide more engagement opportunities for the entire community.

ATLANTA BELTLINE POCKET PARK REYNOLDSTOWN, ATL ANTA , GEORGIA Enlisted by Trees Atlanta to explore this small one-acre site in the historic neighborhood of Reynoldstown on the East Side of Atlanta, this pocket park was designed as a gateway to the East Side trail and as an arboretum to preserve and highlight old growth trees along the rail corridor. The Atlanta Beltline is an ambitious effort to link 45 neighborhoods via a 22-mile greenway. The design of this pocket park centers around the preservation of the canopy, engaging users with a nature walk and natural play areas, as well as paying homage to the importance of the railroad in the development of Atlanta and of the transformative Beltline.

AN INVESTIGATION OF PROGRAMMING + SPACE INCORPORATING SKATEBOARDING INTO PUBLIC SPACES TO ENHANCE THE URBAN FABRIC My thesis began with a simple question: how does skateboarding add value to FLOW OF STRUCTURE the city. RESEARCH: Below is a snapshot of the analysis process for each skatepark and skate spot. This was conducted for a skatepark and a skate spot in each city. The process was composed of three components:
Locate skate space adjacent to urban activity. Avoid a single entrance.
Provide predictable skate lines. Allow for protected or designated circulation. Favor a minimal, open design.
Locate skate spaces within a mix of uses and at the convergence of neighborhoods.
Avoid extreme obstacles. Avoid use of fences around skate areas. Employ a front-stage and a backstage to provide a gradient of interaction with skating. Use landscaping to create micro-spaces, provide buffers, and give shade.

After establishing a list of lessons learned to inform the design of a multi-functional skate space that enhances the vibrancy of the city, I then used the findings to select a site in Memphis, Tennessee. Drawn to the cultural and historic hub of the South Main District in downtown Memphis, the area checked off the boxes in terms of accessibility, density, and urban activation. The site for the skate space is at the convergence of neighborhoods, located on a corner lot, and is part of a larger network of cultural amenities. The research gathered at other skate spaces identified that connectivity and accessibility are critical in establishing and enhancing the relationship between skateboarding and the city. Therefore, this site was put through the same rigorous study and was found to be an ideal location for a unique skate space.

Therefore, the following design tenant guided the process: the design should assume the character of public space that just happens to be good for skateboarding. Everything in the design will have multiple functions and encourage different user groups to engage with the space. Nothing is solely intended for skateboarding.

MINIMAL The design of the minimalist plaza reflects the desire for it to be a flexible, improvisational public space. All skate elements are multi-functional. Benches and brick banked walls comprise the skateable ingredients. These elements also serve the general public as seating, gathering, and flexible space for music, art festivals, etc. Cobblestone, landscaping and an overhead structure delineate skate zones from non-skate zones. With these subtle elements in place, skaters and non-skaters can negotiate for space. In doing so a more authentic skate space is achieve, avoiding the pitfalls of traditional skate spaces and the plaza receives another layer of activation and functionality.

PUERTO RICO An Exploration of Eco-tourism + Coffee Farms

I spent the summer with a team of four landscape architecture and planning students at my professors’ family coffee farm in the remote, mountainous region of Maricao, Puerto Rico. We studied the various natural and political systems at play to contribute a synthesized assessment of the farms potential to further sustainable initiatives and create a trail of coffee farms throughout the region. Our goal was to explore how landscape design principles could be leveraged to plan for a system of coffee farms that could provide employment to the locally impoverished area, draw tourism, and aide in the preservation of the natural landscape. Among our tasks, we talked with local farmers, hiked water sources, hosted biologist to perform transects, and collected data on native trees and coffee plants.
