Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Block Assembly

1. Sew (1) 2 ½” Fabric A square to the left side of (1) 2 ½” Fabric D square. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric A strip to the top of the AD strip to make (1) ADA unit (Fig. 1).

2. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric D strip to the left side of the ADA unit. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 6 ½” Fabric D strip to the top of the ADA unit (Fig. 2).

3. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 6 ½” Fabric A strip to the left side of the ADA unit. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 8 ½” Fabric A strip to the top of the ADA unit to make (1) AD block (Fig. 3). 4. 6. Place (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric E square on top of (1) 3 ⅞” Fabric F square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 6). Sew ¼” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 6). Cut the two squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 7) to make (2) FE units (Fig. 8). Trim the FE units to measure 3 ½” square. Repeat to make (4) FE units total. 7. Sew (4) FE units together to make (1) FE square (Fig. 9).

8. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 6 ½” Fabric C strip to each side of the FE square. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 8 ½” Fabric C strip to the top and to the bottom of the FE square to make (1) FEC block (Fig. 10).

Block Assembly 1. Trace the foundation templates for the two-color rectangles onto the tracing paper including the numbers. Stack eight tracing sheets under each sheet you just traced and staple each stack once or twice. Using the sewing machine with an old, small gauge needle and no thread (even in the bobbin), set the stitch length to 10-12 stitches per inch and carefully sew on the lines (except the outside edges). Make a total of nine copies of each. Transfer numbers onto each one. 2. Use the 3” x 8-1/4” Fabric W (A1, B2 sections) and Fabric R (A2, B1 sections) rectangles and the step 1 foundation papers to make nine two-color rectangles of each type (figure 1). Do not remove paper.

4. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 3-1/8” Fabric S squares. With right sides together, layer the marked Fabric S squares atop the 3-1/8” Fabric F squares. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line, cut on the drawn line, press each unit open with seams toward dark fabric, and trim dog ears (figure 2). Make four 2-3/4” half-square triangles (HST).

5. Repeat step 4 with the 3-1/8” Fabric S, Fabric A, and Fabric F squares to make four HST as shown below (figure 3).

6. Sew the steps 4 and 5 HST together to make two 5” (trim if necessary) block centers (figure 4). Press the seams open.

7. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 2-3/4” Fabrics A and S squares. With right sides together, layer a marked A square on the left short end of a 2-3/4” x 5” Fabric W rectangle and stitch on the drawn line. Trim 1/4” away from the seam line and press open. In the same manner, stitch a 2-3/4” Fabric S square to the opposite end of the same rectangle (figure 5). Repeat to make two flying-geese units.

8. Repeat step 7 with two 2-3/4” x 5” Fabric W rectangles and the 2-3/4” Fabrics A and F squares to make two flying-geese units (figure 6).

9. Noting fabric orientation, sew the step 7 units to the left side of the step 6 block centers (figure 7, next page). Press the seams toward center.

Note: Repeat steps 4-13 to make blocks 2-8. 14. Place each butterfly appliqué shape onto a light box or window pane. Layer the fusible web onto each one and trace four times. Cut each shape 1/8” outside the outline and fuse to the wrong side of the fabrics. Cut on the outline and remove paper backing. 15. Fold and crease the four 9-5/8” Fabric W background squares diagonally twice. Position appliqué shapes on squares using the creased folds as guidelines and fuse them according to manufacturer’s instructions (figure 12). Machine appliqué using matching thread and the blanket stitch. Make four blocks. Trim blocks to 9-1/2”.

16. Repeat step 1 using the square foundation template A, the 2-1/2” x 3-1/4” Fabric W rectangles, and the 1-1/2” x 2” Fabric U strips to make twenty-four squares for border 1. Sew the units together two by two to make twelve strips (figure 13). Press the seams in one direction.

Sewing Cont. twelve 1-1/2” Fabric U squares (cornerstones), and twelve Fabric U triangles AA, as follows: - Rows 1 and 6: one triangle AA, one sashing strip, one triangle AA; - Rows 2 and 5: one triangle AA, three sashing strips alternating with two cornerstones, one triangle AA; and - Rows 3 and 4: one triangle AA, five sashing strips alternating with four cornerstones, one triangle AA. 18. Following the quilt photograph for placement and orientation, lay out five diagonal rows of alternating blocks, the sashing strips, and the step 16 horizontal sashing rows. Add the Fabric V setting triangles CC to the beginning and the end of the rows. Sew the setting triangles, the sashing strips, and blocks together in each row, then matching adjacent seams sew the rows together in order. Press seams in alternate directions for adjacent rows. Sew one Fabric V corner triangle BB to each quilt top corner. Remove paper from blocks. 19. Noting fabric orientation and referring to the quilt photo and diagram for block placement, arrange two 2” x 7” (the proper size of this rectangle is 2” x 6” but 7” allows for differences in sewing) Fabric W rectangles, two 2” x 11-3/4” Fabric W rectangles, and three step 16 strips for each side of the quilt. Sew patches together and sew one border strip to each side of the quilt center. Trim border strip if necessary. Press the seam toward quilt center. 20. Repeat step 19 with the 2” x 8” (the proper size of this rectangle is 2” x 7-1/2” but 8” allows for differences in sewing) Fabric W rectangles, the remaining 2” x 11-3/4” Fabric W rectangles, and the last step 16 strips to make two border strips and sew one to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt center. Trim border strips if necessary. 21. For border 2, sew the five 1-1/2” Fabric S strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Measure the vertical length of the quilt top through the center and cut two border strips that length. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt top. Measure the width of the quilt top through the center. Cut two border strips that length and sew one to the top and one to the bottom. Press the seams toward the borders. Remove paper from the border 1 blocks. Layering, Quilting, and Finishing 22. Create a quilt sandwich with the batting between the quilt top and the backing. Pin or baste layers together, mark quilting design, and quilt by hand or machine. When quilting is complete, remove pins or basting, and trim batting and backing even with raw edges of the quilt top. Binding 23. Join the five 2-1/2” Fabric T binding strips together end to end using a diagonal seam to make one long strip. Fold in half lengthwise and press. Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Block Assembly

Note: Pay attention to the unit orientations while assembling the various components.

1. Sew (1) 2 ½” Fabric K square to each side of (1) 2 ½” Fabric E square to make the top row.

2. Sew (1) 2 ½” Fabric C square, (1) 2 ½” Fabric K square and (1) 2 ½” Fabric I square together in that order left to right to make the middle row. 3. Sew (1) 2 ½” Fabric K square to each side of (1) 2 ½” Fabric B square to make the bottom row. 4. Sew the (3) rows from Steps 1-3 together to make (1) 6 ½” Unit 1 square (Fig. 1).

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Trace templates on paper side of lightweight fusible web. Fuse on specified fabric. Cut out on drawn line; remove paper backing and fuse to background color listed. Secure edges using coordinating thread and small zigzag stitch. 2. Sew rectangles together in columns; press as shown. 3. Sew columns together, alternating Column A with a color series Column B as shown on the quilt. 4. Layer back, batting, and front. Baste together with safety pins. Free motion echo quilt following the applique shapes. Trim excess batting and backing even with the front. 5. Sew the binding strips together end to end. Fold in half lengthwise. Sew to front, matching raw edges. Sew by hand to the back.

Pillow #1 Assembly

1. Place (1) Fabric A- Template One triangle on top of (1) Fabric F Template Three triangle, right sides together, aligning the left sides (Fig. 1). Sew the (2) triangles together along the left side. Press the smaller triangle open. 2. Place (1) Fabric A Template Two triangle on top of the Fabric F Template Three triangle, right sides together, aligning the right sides (Fig. 2). Sew the (2) triangles together along the right side. Press the smaller triangle open to make (1) A/F/A unit (Fig. 3). Trim to measure 4 ½” square. 3. Repeat Steps 1-2 to make (4) A/F/A units total.

4. Repeat Steps 1-2 with (4) Fabric A Template Ones, (4) Fabric A Template Twos and (4) Fabric E Template Threes to make (4) A/E/A units (Fig. 4).

5. Repeat Steps 1-2 with (4) Fabric A Template Ones, (4) Fabric A Template Twos and (4) Fabric G Template Threes to make (4) A/G/A units (Fig. 5).

6. Repeat Steps 1-2 with (4) Fabric A-Template Ones, (4) Fabric A Template Twos and (4) Fabric D Template Threes to make (4) A/D/A units (Fig. 6). 7. Repeat Steps 1-2 with (2) Fabric A Template Ones, (2) Fabric A Template Twos and (2) Fabric C Template Threes to make (2) A/C/A units (Fig. 7).

8. Repeat Steps 1-2 with (2) Fabric A Template Ones, (2) Fabric A Template Twos and (2) Fabric B Template Threes to make (2) A/B/A units (Fig. 8).

9. Refer to Figure 9 to sew (5) assorted units together to make (1) row. Repeat to make (4)rows. Sew the rows together to make the pillow top. 10. Turn under the 16 ½” edge on (1) 13 ½” x 16 ½” Fabric A strip, approximately ¼”, press and repeat. Top stitch the folded fabric in place to make (1) back flap. Repeat with second 13 ½” x 16 ½” Fabric A strip to make a second back flap.

11. Position and pin each back flap, right sides together with the pillow front, overlapping the finished edges in the middle and aligning the raw edges with the pillow front (Fig. 10). Stitch the pillow front and back together. Turn the pillow right side out to complete the pillow case. 12. Insert the 16” x 20” pillow form into the pillow case to complete the pillow.

Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 11). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 12). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

14. Place another 2 ½” Fabric H square on the right side of the 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric J strip, right sides together (Fig. 13). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 13). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 14). 36. Turn under the 20 ½” edge on (1) 13 ½” x 20 ½” Fabric L strip, approximately ¼”, press and repeat. Top stitch the folded fabric in place to make (1) back flap. Repeat with second 13 ½” x 20 ½” Fabric L strip to make a second back flap.

37. Position and pin each back flap, right sides together with the pillow front, overlapping the finished edges in the middle and aligning the raw edges with the pillow front (Fig. 25). Stitch around the pillow front and back. Turn the pillow right side out. 38. Insert the pillow form to complete the pillow.

Sewing

Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Block Assembly

1. Place (1) 4 ⅞” Fabric V square on top of (1) Fabric A square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 1). Sew 1/4” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 1). Cut the two squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 2) to make two AV units. (Fig. 3). Trim the AV units to measure 4 ½” square. Repeat to make (26) 4 ½” AV units. (Note: You will only use [25] of the units.)

2. Repeat Step 1 using (13) 4 ⅞” Fabric J squares and (13) Fabric V squares to make (26) 4 ½” JV units (Fig. 4). (Note: You will only use [25] of the units.) 3. Follow Figure 5 and sew (2) 3” x 4 ½” Fabric P strips, (2) 3” x 9 ½” Fabric P strips and (1) 4 ½” Fabric R square together to make (1) PR block.

7. Refer to Figure 9 to sew the assorted blocks, assorted 9 ½” squares and (20) 2 ½” x 9 ½” Fabric V strips and (5) 2 ½” x 46 ½” Fabric V strips together to make the quilt top.

9. Sew (6) AV units and (6) JV units together, alternating them, to make (1) side border. Repeat to make a second side border. Sew the borders to each side of the quilt top (Fig. 11).

10. Sew (1) 4 ½” Fabric V square, (7) AV units and (6) JV units together to make the top border. Sew (7) JV units, (6) AV units and (1) 4 ½” Fabric V square to make the bottom border. Sew the borders to the bottom of the quilt top (Fig. 12).

Layering, Quilting and Finishing 11. Sew the (2) 64” x WOF strips together and trim to make (1) 64” x 64” backing piece.

Binding

13. Cut the ends of the (6) Fabric X binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make one continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.

14. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.

8. Sew the two 92” x WOF strips together and trim to make one 72" x 92” backing piece.

9. Press the quilt top and backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up) and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete.

Binding

10. Cut the ends of the eight binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make one continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. 11. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.

Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Quilt Top Assembly

(Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.) 1. Sew (25) assorted Template 1 triangles, (1) Template 2 triangle and (1) Template 3 triangle together to make (1) row. Repeat to make (15) rows (Fig. 1). The Template 2 and 3 triangles either start or end a row. Pay attention to the orientation of the triangles. 2. Sew the (15) rows together to make the quilt top (Fig. 1).

3. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 60 ½” Fabric Y strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 54 ½” Fabric Y strip to the top and to the bottom of the quilt top. 4. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 62 ½” Fabric Z strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 58 ½” Fabric Z strip to the top and to the bottom of the quilt top.

Layering, Quilting and Finishing

5. Press the quilt top and 66” x 74” backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up) and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete.

Binding

6. Cut the ends of the (7) Fabric Z binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make (1) continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.

7. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.
