I am second-year furniture and product design student currently studying at Nottingham Trent University. At present, I am looking for a work placement during September 2020 – June 2021. I have been lucky enough to work on some live projects but hope through a placement to gain a greater understanding of the design practice and process within a professional environment. Within my study, I try to adopt precision, innovation, and sustainability. I enjoy watching the process of a sketch being developed into a full-scale design. Beauty can often be found in simple design but design language and sensitivity is still key within any design and should never be overlooked. Thank you for viewing.
Side Table This side table is designed with a multifunctional approach; with the top able to act as a removable tray that can carry items to and from the frame. Unlike other tray side tables, the side table includes underneath storage and fits seamlessly in a room due to the archetypal visuals. Design a small piece of furniture for SCP’s Box collection H 545 W 400 D 400mm/ Beech
Henry Johnson
SCP was founded in 1985 by Sheridan Coakley with a founding idea to make and sell design products that are beautiful, functional and made to last. It has firmly established itself as one of Britain’s most innovative and internationally respected manufacturers and suppliers of contemporary design.

1:5 scale modelling created a better visual representation thus leading to the development of the design and the idea of a removable tray top.
A full-scale model was made and thoroughly tested to check if proportions anthropometrically were correct, and visually helping to see where design language could be applied to benefit the user.

To encourage production methods highly relevant to the start-up designer and the limitations they face, we were only given three standard sized timber sections to explore; 15 x 27
[1]
, 30 x 30 [2], and 22 x 125
[3]
.
The final design incorporated two of the three given timber sections and was fashioned with chamfers along two parallel edges of the tray to allow for a better design language.
8
The final design was produced in solid timber and joined together at each point with a mortise and tenon joint creating good tensile strength within the structure. The dimensions were created to align with those of a bed and side table to create a happy medium.

Organiser With small space storage in mind, the unit provides storage for items that otherwise may be creating clutter elsewhere. In terms of desk use, Organiser provides storage for numerous items that can be stored in various manors and in various compartments. Design a storage product for small space living, that can be easily manufactured H 170 W 122 D 97mm/ Mild steel

Umbra is a design company with more than 30 years of experience within the industry, founded and still led by the founders Les Mandelbaum and Paul Rowan. The brand was first created with the idea to ‘create modern designs that would be accessible in both price and attitude’.
12
The final design was indirectly inspired by Nendo’s Thin Black Lines exhibition (2010) for Phillips de Pury & Company at the Saatchi Gallery.
A full-scale model helped to realise the correct proportions, which lead to a change in dimensions. The base was CNC cut sanctioning clean indents to be produced. The frame was moulded from aluminium rod using a jig, which allowed for quick prototyping.
13
The more curved indents applied to the base of the organiser, allows items to be more easily accessed and removed. The whole frame was also extended to accommodate larger items.
14
We explored various finishes but decided to match the final designs with existing colour combinations Umbra were adopting at the time.

Box Around the world social events are still dictated around tea. The teapot allows for multiple people to share and enjoy a cup of tea from a single pot and acts a social initiator. Box allows for a tea set to be stored in a neat and compact space and embraces the culture of British tea helping to create more of an occasion. The pins allow for different possibilities of storing different sized containers and items. Vitsœ was established in 1959 by Niels Vitsœ with the help of Otto Zapf, to produce the designs of Dieter Rams. At their core is the philosophy ‘as little design as possible’ in a world that favours new over better. Their products avoid fashion whilst creating products that can be the blank canvas on which to paint your colourful life. Keeping the form and design very simple allows their products to aesthetically fit into changing world.

Working with PearsonLloyd led the conventional work process to be taken in an alternative route, with initial research into a chosen macro driver and territory that would later inform the project.

After researching into different cultural tea and coffee formalities, areas chosen due to their social standing, I came across the Chinese Gong Fu tea ceremony in which the tea is presented and made upon a tray.

The concept of the box is inspired by Vitsœ’s 606 Universal Shelving System in the way components are purchased only if required. This helps to keep the user from storing excess, creating a more sustainable product.
Box can be stacked upon one another with the lid, which also acts as a tray, able to be placed in-between the boxes due to a matching radius of corners.

Vitsœ (2016), Brown Betty: the archetypal teapot
The dimensions for the tray and box were derived through testing of average sizes of typical mugs and the three sizes of brown betty teapots; considered to be the archetypical teapot.
Agriplast Biowert is used to injection mould the box and tray; a material sourced from recycled
plastic
with
the
aim of reducing the need for petroleum-based polymers by up to 75%.
23
As dipicted in the images, of a full scale model, the lid can be used to transport the contents of the box and taken to the required location.
24
The finish and colours were directly sampled from Vitsœ’s 621 Table, due to the universal application; finely textured semi-matt paint in either off-white (RAL 9002) or black (RAL 9005).

Origami Pastime Series Origami Pastime Series was created with an effort to provide an escape and entertainment that could be accessed by everyone. The series is essentially an origami instructional manual, guiding with only graphics. An incentive to finish the origami is created through not providing the user with a known final form; instead, clues are placed throughout the booklet providing intriguing facts prompting them on to the end page. Design a product that assists emotional needs during the COVID 19 pandemic H 210 W 297 / A4 Paper
Henry Johnson
The initial steps of the project were led by an exploration into possible areas of ideation, highlighting the main drivers of the lockdown. The topic of the origami was linked to Japanese animals, disguising each of the series with an alternative name relating to the area of habitation or inhabitation: Koi fish - Water 水; Crane - Air 空気 and Frog - Land 土地. Each animal was also chosen with the attempt to correlate Japanese lore of the animals with positive words that could subtly relate to the pandemic such as luck and prosperity to encourage positivity.

An instructional page, which will be downloaded alongside the origami series, was created to inform how to create the booklet used for the origami.
In an attempt to minimise the amount of text needed, a set of instructional symbols were created: a white dot indicates the start point, a black dot indicates the endpoint, a score through a circle indicates a fold point that requires to be unfolded and a dotted line indicates where folds are to be made.

Egg Cup Egg cup was formed after an exploration into by-products and how they can provide a secondary function. The cup is designed to be multifunctional, with a stacking ability as well as two differing sized cups on either side, in order to comfortably fit a variety of sized eggs. Design a generic object/ household tool through material exploration H 545 W 400 D 400/ Egg shell composite

To inform this project a territory and macro driver was created to narrow down the area of exploration; sustainability and waste material.

Waste Material MACRO DRIVER
The egg shell and coffee grounds were locally sourced from Tough Mary’s Bakehouse, a bakery who serve honest bakes and drip coffee.
34
The egg cup is designed to be stackable as well as to allow different sizes of eggs to sit on either side. Alongside design exploration, material exploration was also being considered, initially starting with plaster and concrete and then moving onto food by-products.
35
The egg cup mould was 3D printed, which allowed for precise and accurate modelling.
36
The final three concepts use a combination of egg shell, as well as one addition waste material to provide different variations: coffee grounds; egg shell or coconut shell charcoal.
