Business Case Study Web Design Company
THIS PRESENTATION: Each month we choose one business to feature in our Business Case study presentation. We look at what they do, the start-up process and the tools they used. The overall aim is to provide an insight into the business start-up process and inspiration to everyone looking to set up their own business. This presentation focuses on web design and Idea15.
IDEA15 Heather Burns is a sole trader working from home. She launched her web design agency, Idea15 Web Design, in 2007 and has grown it steadily with an eclectic mix of clients from charities to consultancies. Idea15 Web Design works with business and specialises in working with third sector organisations and charities, to provide the online tools and training they need to thrive in this economy.
GREAT EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW: •
Get the knowledge
Helen has over 15 years experience as well as holding many relevant qualifications such as the CIW Professional accreditation in web site design methodology and technology (2007). If you are passionate about starting your own business make sure you have the knowledge to make others feel confident of your abilities. •
Have a USP
Idea15 markets itself as being able to marry the “geek” side of web design with a strategic business mind. •
Network
Networking is a very important task for small businesses and can often be the aspect that makes your business a success, you need to get your name out there. Helen is a member of the Professional Contractors Group (PCG), East Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, and Scottish Women in Business.
OBSTACLES One challenge Helen came up against was to find an efficient book keeping method. Unless you are a trained accountant, there is a good chance you will find this aspect of running your own business challenging as well. Helen overcame this obstacle by utilising online accounting software. This proved to be user friendly and accessible service. Nowadays it takes her 30 minutes a month to keep her finances up to date. It took her less than an hour to submit her taxes this year with most of that time spent figuring out the Inland Revenue website! Helen says: “Going out on your own in business is terrifying. Get a tool like this and it is easy.
You will come across many obstacles and opportunities when you start up your own business. However, just because you are a sole trader, don’t think that you are alone. Networking with other sole traders will prove to be an invaluable source of knowledge. So keep checking out case studies and don’t be afraid to ask your fellow entrepreneurs questions!
Good luck!
