Alpha Omega Lectures 2024-2025

Chairman’s welcome:

I am honoured to stand before you as Chairman of the Alpha Omega Dental Society London. I joined the London chapter as a student in my final year of King’s College Dental Hospital in 1986 and have been a member ever since.

Before entering general dental practice I was a Restorative house officer at University College Dental Hospital and I then undertook extended postgraduate education at the Eastman Dental Institute Centre of Excellence University College London where I was awarded a distinction for the four-year Diploma in Implant Dentistry, winning the overall prize for Outstanding Achievement in the year group.

I also hold a Certificate in Restorative Dentistry and a Certificate in Surgical and Prosthetic Implantology from the Eastman Dental Institute as well as a Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons. I have been a course mentor for dentists studying for the DGDP. I have been in general dental practice for 37 years in East Finchley and have really enjoyed the continuity of looking after three generations in my local community.

I have vivid memories of being approached in the dental school to join this fabulous society and of attending an introductory meeting with Geoffrey Lesser. He was doubly qualified and divided his time between ENT practice and dentistry.

The society’s values of fraternalism, charity and education were highlighted and I am extremely pleased to be able to carry the ethos forwards. I would like to thank Jayne Cooper for chairing Alpha Omega this year and her dedicated and professional input to the society. She was full of boundless enthusiasm and contributed a huge amount of her time most especially with Young Alpha Omega in spite of having a busy and full time position as a specialist orthodontist.

I would also like to thank the whole committee for supporting me in producing this program especially Diana Spencer and Eddie Scher. Over the years I have valued immensely the knowledge I have gained from the evening meetings and also the friendships and camaraderie, which have developed during the pre-meeting gatherings. I am a great believer in postgraduate education and have always strived to improve my knowledge. I feel that this has enriched my career, my job satisfaction and benefited my patients.

I am proud to carry the baton forwards on the extremely successful Young Dentist Alpha Omega programme we run which supports our young members in their first years as Students and qualified dentists and I am reminded of the support I gained in my early years.

I am excited that the chapter with its amazing committee have put together a really great program. I would like to encourage each and every one of you to support the program, enjoy the evening meetings, bring colleagues and friends with you and help us support each other and the charities we support.

This year’s program consists of six face-to-face meetings and two zoom meetings. I am extremely grateful to the highly distinguished lecturers who have given up their time freely to bring us the advances and developments in their specialist fields.

We start the year’s program with Dr Linda Greenwell presenting the latest aesthetic contemporary restorative strategies for treating advanced tooth wear including the latest digital planning workflows.

Professor Mike Lewis will present a lecture on oral mucosal conditions and the causes of orofacial pain. The lecture will include a self-assessed interactive quiz style.

Dr. Pessia Friedman-Rubin will talk to us on Zoom from Israel on bruxism stress facial pain, diagnosis and the latest treatment modalities.

Professor Jon Suzuki (on Zoom from America) will update us on the implications of bisphosphonate therapy, osteochemonecrosis of the jaw and strategies to minimise risks during dental procedures.

Dr John Milne, past senior dental advisor to the CQC, will help us to prepare for a CQC inspection, show us examples of good and poor practice and help us understand the need for a team approach to good compliance.

Dr Jimmy Makdissi will lecture on the principles of CBCT, current applications to general dental practice, legal responsibilities and training requirements.

Professor Eddie Scher and Mr Brian Mathews will demonstrate how meticulous treatment planning, digital diagnostic wax ups and tools will enable patients to consent to sophisticated implant treatment plans. Their patients confided in them that the treatment had changed their lives!

The chairman always has the final word and I will round off the season with a lecture on clinical dental photography. Equipment selection, settings, tricks and tips and how to have fun with your camera inside and outside of the surgery.

Welcoming new members

At Alpha Omega we welcome new members of any background and from all areas of dentistry; whether at the start, middle or the latter parts of your career. Through our ethos you will find like minded dentists to discuss issues or bounce ideas with. Enjoy great speakers who have a wealth of experience. Get your CPD in a way that you’ll get so much more from than a podcast and webinars. If you’d like to discuss membership give me a call, send me an email or just sign up on the website. You can even just come along to one of our lectures, there’s no need to book beforehand.

All of our lecturers have given up their time freely with no honorarium. All of the income we make from our membership is given to the Alpha Omega London Chapter Charitable trust which helps us disperse funds to a number of great causes.

In the UK we support oral health programs for the special care residents at Norwood formally Ravenswood and the Tree House School, the National Centre of Autism.

In Israel we support the Dental Schools and Hospitals providing equipment and facilities to enhance patient care outcomes as well as undergraduate, postgraduate and specialty training at the Hadassah and Tel Aviv Dental Schools and the Rambam Medical Centre.

In our commitment to Tikun Olam, (improving and repairing our ailing world), I reflect on the challenging and difficult times we are experiencing both in Israel and in the UK. We can all contribute by working together with kindness and care to teach ourselves and our community to share our knowledge and support anyone in our profession who need our advice, knowledge and friendship.

I am really looking forward to welcoming you all to this program.

Kind regards

CHANGING

BDA London, 64 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 8YS (Refreshments from 6.30pm. Lecture from 7.15pm).

We will cover our treatment planning and how decisions were made.

This lecture will look at 3 patients (in the last 2 years) who at the end of their treatment confided in me that I had changed their lives!

We will cover in detail how the very latest digital tools allow us to replace the diagnostic wax-up but still are really accurate in real time. I always have before and after models made up so the patient can approve and give consent to very sophisticated treatment plans. My technician colleague Bryan Matthews will demonstrate and explain the giant leap forward this is! He will show how we can be certain that this is as accurate as the old diagnostic wax-up.

Profile

Bryan Matthews is a seasoned dental technician and entrepreneur with a background in both dental technology and IT. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Dental Technology from Durban University of Technology, South Africa, in 1997. After initially working as a dental technician and expanding his skills in IT studies, Bryan immigrated to the UK in 2001. In the UK, Bryan continued his career in dental technology, eventually transitioning to freelance work, where his expertise and dedication led him to supporting various dental labs around London with their more complex cases. Recognising the potential for growth in digital dental technology, Bryan established Tusk Dental Technologies. Under his leadership, Tusk has expanded into a nationally recognised dental lab, known for its early adoption and innovative approach to digital dental solutions built on the solid foundation of sound restorative principles. Throughout this period Bryan has been involved in educating fellow technicians through technical training, acted in KOL roles and performed advisory work for industry leading technology and material manufacturers.

DentalTechnician and entrepreneur

CHANGING LIVES

Recently, Bryan’s company partnered with the prominent European lab company, Corus, marking a significant milestone in his career and the growth of Tusk Dental Technologies. Bryan’s journey reflects his commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of dental technology.

REPORT OF THE ALPHA OMEGA LONDON CHARITABLE TRUST 2023 - 2024

Sadly, this has been a year like no other. We wish friends, family and colleagues in Israel well under difficult circumstances and sincerely hope that we shall see the release of all hostages and an end to the conflict soonest. In light of these challenges, the Trustees have needed to meet regularly over the past 12 months and have supported dental students on campus as well as challenges of anti-semitism amongst colleagues. Funds have also been directed toward the delivery of emergency patient care where possible. It has been refreshing to see how Alpha Omega’s charitable foundations have worked so effectively across the globe with one project encouraging contributions toward the purchase of an ambulance for Magen David Adom. Let us all hope that we shall hear more positive news soonest.

In recent years, we have supported the Tel Aviv Dental School in their purchase of a cone beam scanner for patients of the School and those referred from further afield. The scanner is now embedded as an integral part of undergraduate and postgraduate education with allied research in periodontology, endodontics, oral medicine, oral surgery and biomechanics. Future research into the application of artificial intelligence in maxillofacial radiology is being explored. We have also supported the

Oral Pathology Laboratory with the purchase of an incubator. The Trustees have reached out to the Dean, Professor Rachel Sarig, to explore new projects.

After many years of collaboration with the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, the Trust is delighted to be working with the Dean, Professor Avi Zini. In recent years, we have assisted with the purchase of sterilisation cassettes and contributed toward the establishment of a Digital Laboratory to support dental education and patient care which was opened in September 2023. Dedication of the Student’s Study Centre within the Institute of Biomedical and Oral Research at the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine has needed to be delayed due to the conflict. Also at Hadassah, the Ino Sciaky Prize for Oral Medicine was this year awarded to two recipients who needed to interrupt and return to their training following service in the IDF. Dr Ido Fayer and Dr Daniel Yagudaev both received a Certificate and £250.

Following extensive discussions with Professor Eli Machtei, Head of the Graduate Dental School at the Rambam Medical Centre in Haifa, and more recently Professor Dror Aizenbud, the Trust have provided £3,910 to part fund the purchase of an endodontic microscope required to support postgraduate training and specialist care in endodontics.

The Alpha Omega London Charitable Trust has also supported the following projects over the past year:

£3,000

Volunteers of Israel Various: new chair (part), compressors (part), worktops £5,680

David Adom

blood service centre refurb and ambulance (part) £7,088

The Trust continues to offer awards to support the education and research of undergraduate students and postgraduate specialist trainees. A single request of £673 for conference support and presentation was granted.

Royalties from the latest edition of the ‘Tooth Wear’ book, edited by Professor Andrew Eder and Dr Maurice Faigenblum and published by the BDJ and Springer Nature, will continue to be split between the BDA Benevolent Fund and the Alpha Omega Charitable Trust. Since publication of this latest edition in 2022, the Trust has received £340.

The Trustees are progressing a review of the Trust deeds and related documentation to ensure that the Trust remains compliant with regard to latest guidance and legislation. This governance review should be complete later this year.

Following a superb programme delivered by the Alpha Omega London Dental Society and with the support of Henry Schein and other colleagues in the dental trade, the Trust has received £16,400 in support of its charitable activities despite significant global challenges over the past 12 months.

£4,809

Special thanks are extended to Dr Jayne Cooper as Chair of Council, together with all the Council members, for yet another excellent clinical programme this year and for all their efforts on behalf of our members despite the challenges above. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our Trustees and the many friends and colleagues who give so freely of their time on behalf of the Alpha Omega London Dental Society and Charitable Trust.
