Radic8 Leading the Fight

Page 1

LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST AIRBORNE VIRUSES Protecting people with vulnerable and compromised immune systems Airborne pathogens are a major threat to people suffering from any type of non-communicable disease. Radic8 technology kills airborne pathogens and helps to provide safe indoor environments.

A word from our founder and CEO

A few years ago my father developed COPD and I looked at the market to see what products were available to keep him safe in his apartment, I knew he would be vulnerable to respiratory infections. I found a lot of air purifier devices using simple filters but no real technology that could keep him safe as you can not catch viruses with filters. I broadened my search to see what the medical sector was using and again I found only filters with no real technologies to deal with respiratory viruses, this was a little shocking.

some new product lines and officially launched in 2017. I am proud to say that we are now the Radic8 – INBair group. Radic8 looks after all territories outside of South Korea and China and INBair are busier than ever in their home territory.

I eventually found that South Korea had technology installed in most of their hospitals and medical facilities that did kill respiratory viruses. I traced the technology, (Viruskiller), back to a company called INBair, based in Seoul. INBair technology was the best I had ever seen and their test results were second to none, so I hopped on a plane and went to see them. After spending some time with INBair it was clear that we could help each other; I needed their core technologies and manufacturing capabilities and I offered my design, development and international marketing services. Together we redesigned the core product lines, invented

We are the first ‘indoor generation’ in history. I do not believe that there are more airborne pathogens than there have been before but I do believe that we are now exposed to more. We have sealed up our buildings to be more energy efficient and we trap airborne pathogens in them, along with other air pollutants.

Since 2017 Radic8 has sold thousands of units into over 30 countries and our footprint is growing. We are protecting people in their homes, in medical and healthcare facilities, schools, offices and many other indoor spaces.

There is a lot of educating to be done, especially within medical and healthcare settings, and I am proud to say that Radic8 is leading the fight against airborne viruses.” Richard Greenwood, Founder at Radic8.

Radic8 was proud to be chosen as Top Innovation of the Year 2018 by the not-for-profit organisation “Infection Prevention Strategy in North America. This award is a milestone for Radic8 and the wider industry as it shows that the infection control community in the West are starting to look seriously at air transmission.

ARLO’S STORY Arlo has a very rare genetic condition called ABCA3 surfactant deficiency. It is a lifelong condition whereby Arlo doesn’t produce the lung lubricant in it’s correct form to allow the lungs to expand and retract as they should, along with supplying the blood with sufficient oxygen. This in turn means Arlo requires bi-pap ventilation along with high levels of oxygen delivered via a tracheostomy 24/7. Arlo requires an extensive list of medication including permanent steroids which severely compromise his immune system as a bi-product of their advantages. What were your main reasons for contacting DIY SOS? Arlo spent the first 19 months of his life in intensive care at Kings College hospital London. Owing to the levels of support Arlo requires we were unsure whether Arlo would ever be allowed home. My wife and myself worked in shifts to ensure one of us was with Arlo day and night whilst the other was at home looking after my other two sons. After substantial training we managed to get Arlo home and converted our living room into a makeshift intensive care unit. However with no downstairs bathroom or storage for Arlo’s vast medical supplies along with a lack of adequate door access, we were fortunate enough that many of our friends and family contacted DIY SOS to see if help was possible. What has been your experience of the Radic8 technology and have they helped Arlo? The units have fitted into our life seamlessly. So much so that they are genuinely not even noticed anymore. We run the units continuously since installation and thus far after 4 months use we are delighted to say Arlo has had his most

healthy winter ever, with only one return trip to intensive care for a precautionary measure. Would you like to see the Radic8 technology in the medical facilities that Arlo has to visit? If yes, why? 100% After 19 months living n intensive care we have seen first-hand all too often how quickly viruses spread through hospitals despite all their Arlo has has contracted contracted 5x as many best measures. Arlo many virusesin inhospital hospital as as opposed opposed to being at home. viruses home. Currently a lot is done about direct and indirect disease transmission routes (touch and surfaces) but not very much about airborne and droplet transmission routes. What are your thoughts on this? Cost is obviously the main factor in NHS, however my personal experience is that to overlook the airborne threat is a false economy and the adverse effects can cost far more in terms of disruption, hard cost of treatment and patient discomfort. In intensive care environments it is not an exaggeration to suggest the consequences can be fatal. Do you have any words of advice for other parents who have children with compromised immune systems? As tempting as it is to try and protect Arlo in a “bubble” realistically it simply isn’t possible. We are determined to give Arlo as full and varied life as possible so our approach has been to set some hard and fast rules concerning hygiene that have simply become the norm and to be extra vigilant when it comes to others with known bugs. That said, it’s impossible to be 100% certain of everything whilst trying to live a normal life. Having this tech in our home allows us to sleep a little better knowing that we have operating theatre levels air filtration in our home giving Arlo that extra layer of unseen support. Arlo’s Dad

VIRUSKILLER™ Pure science. The principle of our technology is UVC light and it is based on Albert Einstein’s photon energy. The efficiency of the UVC light in our reactor chamber is increased several times by utilising Fresnel’s equations for reflection and transmission. The inside of the reactor chamber has a chrome mirror coating. Optimum numbers of UVC lights are placed in the reactor chamber and they are surrounded with layers of nano filter tubes. The nano filter tubes are coatead with photo catalytic TiO2 which reacts with the UVC light in order to create the strongest oxidants known to man - hydroxyl radicals (-OH)

A VIRUSKILLER™ unit is not another box with a fan and filters. It is packed full of cutting edge technology that has the very best test results in a single air pass.

nothing comes out of this unit alive

It takes a single air pass

While other technologies boast time based kill rate (testing their efficiency in a time interval, usually 30 minutes), our technology boasts single air pass results. Because if you don’t kill viruses in a single air pass, you may actually just spread them around, possibly increasing the risk of cross contamination. Our claims are based on science and test results. We keep no secrets, that is why we show and explain every component of our award winning units.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND TEST RESULTS

It’s all about test results. A single sneeze can release thousands of virus particles into the air that remain suspended for hours, landing on surfaces and infecting people when breathed in. C. difficile spores can become airborne, rendering surface cleaning routines ineffective. Radic8 provides real-time protection from airborne contamination, neutralising viruses and bacteria before they land on people or surfaces or are breathed in. Aside from reducing cross-contamination, Radic8 removes all other air pollutants that can be equally harmful to patients. Toxic gases and particulate matter from industrial processes and road traffic are now known to damage health and increase recovery times. Allergens and mould can trigger asthma, and cleaning chemicals can be carcinogenic. By installing Radic8

technology and advertising ‘We Share Clean Air’, you can provide a safe and relaxing environment for clients and patients. The Viruskiller range has been designed to meet even the most demanding specifications and can adapt to each medical facility’s individual requirements. The sterilisation technology can be added to existing ductwork, used to create positive and negative pressure, or used as stand-alone air purification and sterilisation units. The VK Medi is specially designed for medical facilities. Alongside our most powerful sterilisation chamber sits the world’s thickest HEPA filter and the most powerful fan, giving the best test results of any commercially available air purifier and steriliser. DISEASE TRANSMISSION ROUTES AND IMPORTANCE OF AIRBORNE AND DROPLET

Airborne

There are four disease transmission routes. A lot is done to prevent direct and indirect contact disease transmission routes but what about airborne and droplet transmission? It is a common misconception within the healthcare and medical sectors that filters are protecting people from airborne pathogens. As you will see from reading this magazine, filters do trap bacteria, mould and fungi but not respiratory viruses. On top of that, what filters do catch soon starts to multiply on their surface within as little as six days, and can then become the source of contamination. Having the right technology to fight airborne and droplet transmission routes will also reduce direct and indirect contact transmission routes.

DIRECT CONTACT INDIRECT CONTACT AIRBORNE DROPLET

Q: Where does the majority of surface contamination come from? A significant proportion of surface contamination comes from the air. Every day actions like flushing a toilet and changing bed linen can cause plumes of microbial contamination to rise into the air. A single sneeze can release 40,000 virus-containing droplets. Both droplets and particles can remain suspended in the air for hours, until they eventually settle on surfaces. Radic8’s tower units can prevent this by creating a forced airflow, drawing air into the bottom of the machine and delivering clean air out of the top. Radic8 offers real-time protection against airborne pathogens whilst reducing bioburden on surfaces.

Real time protection. As opposed to other infection prevention practices which are commonly preventative or reactive, the Radic8 product lines offer real-time protection against airborne pathogens wherever they are installed. Most of the Radic8 systems are plug and play which means they carry no heavy installation costs, are very mobile and a moveable asset. There are a few things to take into account when installing the Radic8 units: 1) Sized correctly for the indoor space. The more air exchanges that go through the units, the quicker Radic8 is at removing airborne pathogens and pollutants. The Radic8 team can help you to ensure you are getting enough air exchanges in accordance with requirements. 2) Airflow is important and also forms an important part of the Radic8 design. The tower units are designed for larger areas with multiple people, waiting rooms are a good example. Contaminated air is pulled to the ground and clean air is produced at breathing height. The VK Blue unit is a wall mounted unit and can be positioned for the perfect airflow, removing contaminated air where needed. Hextio has a unique directional airflow hood, this enables single person protection in most environments.

WORLD’S FIRST WE SHARE CLEAN AIR CANCER FACILITY

OMAN CANCER ASSOCIATION “Their compromised immune systems mean they are at a higher risk of developing serious complications if they get sick, so maintaining good air quality is essential during such a delicate recovery period.”

Oman Cancer Association (OCA) has become the world’s first We Share Clean Air cancer association. It is an absolute privilege for Radic8 to work with OCA and install 30 units into their residential facility that houses children being treated for cancer and their families. Contracting respiratory viruses whilst undergoing cancer treatment can seriously hinder progress and even be life threatening. In most cases cancer patients are told to limit social interaction, but how is that possible, especially with young children? The Radic8 technology has a kill rate of 99.9999% on all known respiratory viruses and when multiple units are specified and installed in a facility, the Radic8 technology is able to destroy airborne pathogens very quickly, keeping people inside the facility safe. Radic8 applauds the forward thinking nature and wonderful duty of care shown by the Oman Cancer Association and hopes that this can be a shining example. After studying the clean air products available on the market, the Leukemia association of South Korea only recommends the VK Blue unit for home care. Cancer is such a major problem around the world and Radic8 are extremely motivated to work with the fight against cancer by leading the fight against airborne viruses.

HOW RADIC8 CAN HELP THE CANCER COMMUNITY

In February 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. The treatment to deal with the tumour was harsh and my immune system weakened and remains so. Friends were my main support system; however, they were vulnerable too from colds, viruses etc., that my immune system had little or no defence from. I had numerous appointments at the hospital, where I couldn’t easily shield myself from others; some of whom were facing similar issues from depleted immune systems, as well as staff and visitors sneezing and coughing. Finding Radic8 was a sheer fluke. A virus killer and clear air device that was portable was just what I felt would help me manage my immediate environment and keep me safe around the people I love and from whom I needed support. This gave me the confidence that I could be well and get stronger more quickly after my treatment for cancer. The idea of having clean air around me at home, in the car and in places where I needed to spend 6-8 hours (mostly in hospital settings waiting for and having treatment) was fantastic. I have used Hextio for nearly six months and my assessment to date is very positive. I have been largely cold and virus free for the last six months, despite being around friends and carers who have had heavy and multiple colds. I enjoy the confidence the technology gives me and can see from the device when the air is not clean. I am struck by the number of public places where such technology could make a huge difference, especially where those like me have compromised immune systems. But equally those who would want to feel safe in the knowledge that viruses were being killed before being passed on. For me, an obvious area would be chemotherapy units, hospitals, nursing and older people’s homes. I’m sure this list is potentially endless.”

INTERVIEW WITH DR RAJYASHREE N. KUTTY

Oman woman of the year for health services

Any patient diagnosed and undergoing cancer treatment has low immunity and is susceptible to infection caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. As doctors, we recommend avoiding crowded places and people in general, but patients also need full support from their family and friends, which implies a great deal of human interaction. The VIRUSKILLER™ technology can help them by neutralising airborne viruses and bacteria from the air, before they are inhaled. Medical facilities and hospitals are working very hard to prevent nosocomial infections but airborne viruses are always a challenge. Basic education and awareness programs can help but still the airborne diseases can not be tackled completely. Running an air steriliser like the ones from Radic8-INBair Group can certainly help to a large extent to keep the air safe and significantly reduce the risk of infection. I have myself installed the technology in my clinic and after using it for a while, I can say that there’s certainly a good change. I notice it automatically turning to full-fan when people with upper respiratory tract infections enter the room. I have also been told by my colleague, who has it in his home that his children have reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract infections and that they sleep better due to improved air quality which helps with nose congestion. It is worth noting that this is also important for people with other conditions that weaken the immune system, such as asthma, chronic obstructive artery diseases, diabetes, etc, to make sure they limit their exposure to viruses and bacteria as much as they can. For this reason, VIRUSKILLER™ technology can aid tremendously. Dr. Rajyashree N. Kutty

THE TRUTH ABOUT HEPA FILTERS HEPA FILTERS HAVE BEEN USED SINCE 1940. TECHNOLOGY HAS IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY SINCE THEN. BUT WHAT CAN HEPA FILTERS DO AND CAN’T DO AND WHEN SHOULD WE USE THEM?

FACTS. FACTS. FACTS. Dust

Fact: HEPA filters can only catch particles larger than 0.3 microns. Because of the above limitation, HEPA filters should only be used for particles larger than 0.3 microns (mould, allergens, dust) or on particles that only need to be caught in filters but not necessarily destroyed. PM

filters become a growing surface for pathogens in as little as six days! That happens because bacteria feeds and multiplies on the dusty surface of the filter then it is released back into the air in bigger numbers. We solve this issue by shining UV-C radiation on the filter. This way, we kill all pathogens trapped there. ** Efficient only for a short period of time, until reaching a stable equilibrium. In the presence of UV-C and PCO, unstable equilibrium is achieved. This leads to higher efficiency for much longer periods of time.

CROSS CONTAMINATION IN WAITING AREAS

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ARE SAT IN A WAITING ROOM AND SOMEBODY IS COUGHING AND SNEEZING? “You go to the doctors to get sick” is a common saying among older generations. This is still something that crosses most people’s minds when they sit in any medical waiting rooms with other patients. Many waiting rooms have removed magazines and most have hand sanitisers available. These are positive steps, however in this environments in particular, the air we are sharing should also be considered.

FIGHT ASTHMA Asthma is one of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world, affecting 339 million globally and prevalence is rising. People of all ages can develop asthma and go on to suffer from reduced quality of life and reduced life-expectancy. We know that asthma can be exacerbated by exposure to air pollutants, but recent research conducted by the American Academy of Paediatrics has revealed

New Things for the Newborn? When a family discovers the wonderful news that they are expecting a baby, very often the way they prepare for the arrival is to prepare the nursery. A fresh coat of paint on the walls, a new cot, fresh linen and heaps of new clothes and toys. Then we bring our precious little bundle home., settle them in and keep the windows closed to keep them warm. Unwittingly, we might be exposing their vulnerable developing lungs to unprecedented levels of harmful airborne chemicals. Many new consumer-goods release (off-gas) formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for up to four years after they are manufactured. Wooden furniture, paint coatings, clothes and plastic toys have all found to be sources of pollution in homes.

links between the onset of asthma attacks and the upper respiratory tract infections such as common cold. Almost 62% of children presenting with moderate to severe asthma exacerbations had at least one upper respiratory tract infection. More worryingly, influenza infections caused treatment failure in a quarter of patients, increasing the danger of the asthma attack.

The number of children with asthma appears to be rising and increased exposure to air pollution from a young age may be one of the reasons. We are a truly indoor generation, spending 90% of our time indoors. Radic8 strongly believes that prevention is better than cure and recommend we protect our children throughout their life, starting in the nursery.

CURLY’S STORY Curly is an 8 year old fun seeking, loud music, disco light loving little boy that has a series of complex health needs, each one compounded by the next.

and well-being of Curly. We also feel that it is an ‘extra weapon’ in fighting any airborne germs that could be in our home not only during the winter months but through the year.

Do you think it is important for people with a compromised immune system to limit exposure to airborne pathogens? Hell yes! These are silent killers, that are invisible and a constant worry to ANY parent or carer to someone with compromised immune system and breathing difficulties.

Curly is a full-time wheelchair user and has dystonic cerebral palsy which affects all four limbs. Due to the severity of Curly’s cerebral palsy he cannot move or control any of his four limbs, with out assistance and has minimal head control. He has epilepsy, is tube fed and is registered blind. Curly also has scoliosis of spine meaning that he has a curved and twisted spine. Due to the complexities of Curly’s conditions he is susceptible to chest infections and pneumonia in both lungs. As Curly remains ‘static’ unless physically moved by us his parents, he requires a high level of respiratory physiotherapy to ensure that he can cough and remove any phlegm that is a sitting in his lungs or airways. As this is a prime breeding ground for any bugs, germs or nasties that Curly inhales, this makes him a prime candidate for chest infections, colds and in worst cases pneumonia. (Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder syndrome in which sustained or repetitive (and sometime times extremely painful) muscle contractions result in twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal fixed postures.) How long have you been using the Radic8 technology and what are the benefits you have seen, if any? We have been using the Radic8 technology for a considerable length of time now and feel that this has contributed to the general good health

Would you like to see Radic8 technology installed in medical facilities, if yes why? The highest level of these Radic8 systems need to be seen as ‘standard’ in ALL hospitals, especially High Dependancy Units. These HDU’s are where patients require 1:1 or 2:1 nursing care depending on the complexity and health needs. Curly would spend 1-2 weeks several times a year in HDU, but more so through the Autumn and Winter months. We once estimated that in a 30 bed children’s ward, there were in excess of 400 people in and out of that ward in a 24 hour period. Each one coughing, breathing and sneezing their germs in an enclosed and securely locked environment. We try to stay out of hospital if we can help it! However we now take our portable Radic8 unit with us, to aid in safeguarding Curly. Curly’s Dad

NEW AND EXCITING INNOVATIONS BY RADIC8 INBAIR GROUP

“Can we install your technology in our air conditioning or ventilation system?” We are asked this question a lot and we have not been able to solve this to the standard we would put our name to, until now. Radic8-INBair group have been developing some of LG’s new technologies and our most exciting development is our new, patent pending UV Laser technology for ventilation and air conditioning systems. Air passes standard UV lights too quickly and the filters used in ventilation systems can become a breading ground for microbial contamination. A true solution to airborne pathogens within ducted systems has not, until now, been available.. The Radic8-INBair group UV Lasers will not lose their intensity and will supply high level ultraviolet radiation down the length of the ducting. Multiple lasers will be fitted into a duct and as the airborne pathogens come into contact with the laser beams, they will be destroyed. The UV Lasers will be easy to retrofit, create very little noise and back pressure, consume little energy and last for up to five years before requiring replacing. We expect to have the UV Laser technology commercially available by the end of 2019.

The Radic8-INBair team are also working on several other exciting developments within the new LG range

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE

Patient benefits how they feel = how they heal There is a growing awareness in the medical community that the emotional journey a patient goes through during their experience with medical and healthcare institutions can be critical to how well their treatment and subsequent recovery progresses. Often there is an element of fear when a person has to attend an appointment. What will happen? Will it hurt? Will I catch something that makes me sicker? There are procedures in place to make patients feel safe, secure and relaxed throughout the experience. Diagnoses are explained to patients carefully in language they will understand, and options and risk levels clearly explained. They are made to feel safe from contamination by the gloved and masked surgeons with carefully sterilised instruments. None of this addresses one of the most perva-

sive fears patients and visitors alike share when visiting any healthcare facility. Just the smell of a hospital is enough to make some people afraid. We have an innate fear that we might catch something when confined at close quarters with a coughing and sneezing person. Radic8’s ‘We Share Clean Air’ certification allows institutions to tell their employees, patients and visitors that they are actively protecting the air from microbial contamination. This can very effectively ease people’s concerns, making them more likely to attend appointments and relax when receiving care. By taking a proactive approach and installing VIRUSKILLERTM technology in healthcare facilities you can reduce staff absenteeism, improve patient welfare and benefit from positive advertisement.

ABEL’S STORY

A couple of years ago in January, our pital are greater so we looked after him at home. first child was born. We named him Abel was too young for most medicine, so we Abel. He was perfectly healthy and beautiful. had to just ... hope for the best. It was painful. I Needless to say we were extremely protective had to do everything in my power to make sure of him. I thought I was in control of everythat it will not happen again, and especially with thing until he started coughing, badly. He Abel’s weakened immune system, we had to prowouldn’t sleep and I could feel him struggling tect him until he fully recovered. Which he did! to breathe. We had a few doctors come to our (breastmilk is better than any medicine on the house and diagnose him. Three doctors, three planet!). Knowledge is power. So, during that opinions. One worse than the other but they time, I read the whole internet (at least I think all agreed that he contacted something “from I did) in search of knowledge. I found Radic8 the air”. How could he? We created a safe haand I fell in love with their unique products and ven for him at home. Everything was brand vision. I then wrote an email to the CEO telling new and we only had our close family visit us. him I want to help Radic8 in any way possible. Man was I wrong about the air. IS THAT ALL? Although the main focus of VIRUSKILLER™ is well ... killing viruses, it does a lot more in the process. Viruses make up the smallest air pollution particles and are usually the ones hardest to catch and kill. The larger particles and gases are relatively easy to destroy, and all are easily dealt with in our advanced reactor chambers. Ever more studies link air pollution and conditions like asthma and COPD, some types of cancer and even mental disorders like depression. . Clean air is invaluable in keeping our bodies, especially our lungs, healthy.

Dirty air

Dirty air polluted with coarse particulate matter such as Dust / Pollen / Dander / Cigarette Smoke. If these are the pollutants you are most worried about, a HEPA filter system will be good enough for you.

Sick air

Sick air is polluted with microbial matter such as Bacteria / Viruses / Mould / Fungi. Although HEPA systems will catch Bacteria, Mould and Fungi, they can grow on the filter which can itself become a source of contamination. HEPA filters will not catch viruses, they need to be destroyed by VIRUSKILLER™.

Toxic air

Toxic air is polluted by Gases, Chemicals and VOCs. HEPA filter systems are not effective against toxic air. To actively destroy gases you need to use clean air technology such as that within our reactor chambers.
