Welcome On behalf of the event committee, welcome to the 12th Biennial Kiwanis Club of San Carlos wine and auction fundraising event. Our theme for the evening is “Taste of Summer.” This evening features scrumptious and hearty hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting that has been generously provided by Domenico Winery and Waxwing Wines, and fabulous raffle prizes to be awarded throughout the evening. There will be two types of auction: 1. A silent auction of over 50 items and gift packages with a total value of more than $10,000. You can preview the tables and bid until 7:45 PM 2. A live auction starting at 7:45 PM. Have no fear, you will actually be able to understand what the auctioneer is saying. You bid with your unique number on the paddle received at checked-in.

Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 by a group of businessmen in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The organization was originally called the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers, but changed its name to Kiwanis a year later. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from an expression in an American Indian language of the Detroit area, “Nunc Kee-wanis,” which means, “we trade.” In 1920, the motto of Kiwanis became “We Build.” It remained the motto until 2005, when members voted to change it to “serving the children of the world.” In the early years, members focused on business networking but in 1919, the organization changed its focus to service —specifically service to children. Kiwanis became an international organization with the founding of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis clubs formed in communities across the United States and Canada until the 1960s when worldwide expansion was approved. Today, Kiwanis clubs are helping children thrive, prosper and grow in nearly 80 nations and geographic locations. All people are welcome to participate in the Kiwanis movement of improving communities for children. In 2008, delegates approved a resolution that calls for Kiwanis clubs to celebrate and foster inclusiveness. Currently, there are Kiwanis clubs in 79 countries and geographic territories. Kiwanis International comprises various districts around the world. San Carlos Kiwanis Club is part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii district. On March 24, 1923, Nevada became affiliated with the district, and the Kiwanis International Board approved the name of California-Nevada District at a meeting in December 1924. With the formation in 1947 of the clubs in Hawaii into a division, the feasibility of adding this division to the California-Nevada District was discussed. The California-Nevada-Hawaii District became operative as of January 1, 1951. This year’s California-Nevada-Hawaii district convention will be held in Kona, Hawaii on August 9-11.
