HEP C IS NOT A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION (STI)
IF THERE IS BLOOD AROUND DURING SEX, THERE CAN BE A RISK OF PASSING HEP C ON 17 TM ed 7.indd 17
2/4/2011 1:58:11 PM
THE THING TO REMEMBER IS
HEP C IS ONLY SPREAD BY BLOOD TO BLOOD CONTACT THE BLOOD OF SOMEONE WHO HAS HEP C HAS TO GET INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S BLOODSTREAM
THIS IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN DURING SEX
that n w o h s s a h Research passing hep C the risk of exual partner is onto your sw to non existant extremely lo

when can there be blood Around during sex? There are some times when there might be blood during sex. These are times where passing on hep C might be possible, however this is still a low risk.
STI’s if someone already has a sexually transmitted infection (like herpes, chlamydia, crabs or genital warts) there might be open sores which can be an entry point for blood
When a woman has her period as there is blood this can be a risk
Some sexual practices might cause small tears or cuts to the skin. This means that there might be blood. For example; Anal sex Rough sex Using sex toys
OTHER RISKS HIV sometimes it is easier to catch hep C if you already have HIV

staying safe If you have hep C it is not recommended you do anything different from other people who are having sex. In any new or casual relationship, safe sex should always be used to protect both partners from HIV and all the other STI’s out there. Safe sex involves using: condoms, water based lube, dental dams

getting tested Sexual health screens (tests) are a good idea and anybody can have a free & confidential check up at a sexual health clinic or GP. A sexual health screen will mean you will be asked a lot of questions about your sexual experiences. This is so the nurse can get an idea of what to test you for, before they take a blood sample. They are confidential and won’t tell anybody what you talked about They can test you for all the STIs that are out there as well test you for hep C.

do you need to use condoms just because one of you has hep c?
a
No, Not just because of hep C. Sex is usually a low risk for hep C. You don’t need a condom if you are only worried about passing on hep C. There is more chance of hep C being passed on if someone has HIV. Condoms are important then. it is also important to remember Condoms are the best way to protect you and any sexual partner against other sexually transmitted infections like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and hep B.
