If you have hepatitis, it’s best to avoid alcohol as much as possible Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver Hepatitis can come from a few things including viruses (like hep C) and drinking too much alcohol. When your liver is inflamed for a long time, it can become scarred – this scarring can stop your liver working properly, which can lead to serious health problems.

So why not cut back on the one you can? Your risk of developing liver damage is higher if you have hep C and drink alcohol Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink can be an important part of reducing the risk of serious liver damage.

TIPS ON HOW TO... ...reduce the amount of alcohol you drink 1 Switch to low-alcohol or alcohol-free drinks 2 Mix your wine with mineral water 3 Mix your beer with lemonade 4 DONT drink in rounds so there’s less pressure to keep up with your friends 5 Have a glass of water or soft drink between each alcoholic drink 6 Try and have 2 or 3 alcohol free days a week If you have hep C, it’s always best to drink as little as you can. If you have developed Cirrhosis (which means your liver is scarred) it’s recommended you shouldn’t drink alcohol at all. If you’re taking medication, ask your doctor or clinic how much you should drink.

‘If someone is pregnant and has Hep C, how likely is it that their baby will also have Hep C? (Brittney, 22 from Wollongong)

a

There is ONLY a 5 -7% chance Hep C can be passed on from a mother to her baby...

This means that for every 100 babies born to women with hep C, up to 95 of them will not have the virus.

Passing hep C from a mother to a baby is called ‘vertical transmission’, which happens before or during the birth. It is not possible for a mother to pass on hep C through changing nappies or other close physical contact where there is no blood-to-blood contact.
