HEP C

TRAVELS BY BLOOD This is when the blood of someone who has hep C, gets into someone else's bloodstream. When someone is injecting drugs, there can be lots of blood around - even in such small amounts that you can't see it. This means you should be extra aware of blood if someone is helping you inject, if you're drawing drugs from the same spoon or if someone is not using new injecting equipment. It only takes a little bit of blood on ANY of the equipment used for injecting (not just needles) for the hep C virus to be passed from one person to another.

10

THE EXTRA 'STUFF' What’s the other equipment we’re talking about? In an injecting situation, it’s not just needles and syringes – but also spoons, tourniquets, swabs, water and even fingers or hands that come into contact with blood. Unsafe injecting is the cause of about 90% of all new hep C infections.

11

s ' T A H W ? P S N AN NSP stands for Needle & Syringe Program People often get these confused with ‘needle exchanges’ - but at an NSP, you don’t need to exchange anything.

At an NSP, you can... ... pick up any equipment you need for injecting and most of it is free. The equipment you can usually get at an NSP includes needles and syringes, swabs, spoons, tourniquets and sterile water.

YOU CAN ALSO... ... ask the staff questions. Staff at an NSP can give you information on safe injecting as well as drug treatment, medical care and legal or social services. Staff can also give you condoms and advice on safe sex.

How to find your nearest NSP? Call ADIS on 9361 8000 or

Can hep C be passed on by kissing or having sex?

(Michael, 18 from Yagoona)

A “

You can't get hep C by kissing someone and there's a very low risk that it'd be passed on during sex

Hep C is not an STI (sexually transmitted infection) For hep C to be passed on, there has to be blood around. If you are having sex with someone and there is blood around (rough sex, periods), take the usual safe sex precautions and use a condom or dental dam. The risk can be increased if HIV or other STIs are involved.
