to find out more about marijuana and hep c, go to pG 24

Marijuana your liver

I HEART MY

LIVER

daily use of marijuana is linked to liver damage (we've found this out from recent research). People who use marijuana every day are more likely to have severe fibrosis. Fibrosis is scarring of the liver which can stop your liver from working properly.

so, if you have hep C, cutting down or quitting pot smoking is a good idea.

But – while we don’t encourage its use – occasional (light) use of marijuana has been shown to be helpful for some people in dealing with hep C treatment side effects and coping with treatment drugs.

As with alcohol intake, the key message with marijuana and hep C is moderation. Services are available to help you manage marijuana use. Phone the Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS) for more information and chat to your GP. ADIS (Alcohol and Drug Information Service) 9361 8000 or 1800 422 599 from outside Sydney

If find out I have hep C, is it ok to keep smoking cigarettes?

(Sally 37 from Newcastle)

A “

Hep C is a good reason to consider cutting down or quitting smoking

New research shows that smoking can speed up the progression of liver disease in people with hep C

If you have hep C and you are also a heavy smoker of marijuana or tobacco, your chances of long-term liver damage are increased - smoking is not recommended if you have hep C. When you have hep C, if you eat well, exercise and are careful about how much alcohol you drink and the amount you smoke, you'll be doing the best you can to keep yourself healthy.
