Continuingprojectsthat keptusbusyincludedour partnershipworkwith researchinstitutions, particularlywiththeCentre forSocialResearchinHealth inrelationtotheHBV StigmaandDiscrimination MonitoringProject,and theKirbyInstitutewiththe TEMPOStudycomparing outcomesrelatedtonew HCVrapidtechnologies. HepatitisSAalsosignedup tobeasiteintheKirby’s NationalHCVPointofCare TestingProgram.
Duringtheyear,HepatitisSA twicehostedinternational visitors.InJune2023, ProfessorJoshuaSharfstein, ViceDeanforPublicHealth PracticeandCommunity Engagement,JohnsHopkins BloombergSchoolofPublic HealthvisitedaNeedle andSyringeProgram whereHepatitisSApeers
andaCALHNnursewere operatingHCVPointofCare testing.ProfSharfsteinhasa leadershiproleintheUSA’s $11billionHCVelimination effortandwasinterestedto seehownewHCVtesting technologieswerebeing implementedinAustralia. TheninNovember,agroup ofhealthprofessionalsfrom Indonesiaonastudyvisitto AdelaideUniversityvisited tousaboutthecommunitybasedresponsetoviral hepatitisinSouthAustralia.
Awelcomeannouncement fromDrugandAlcohol ServicesSouthAustraliathat occurredmid-yearwasthat theCleanNeedleProgram wasbeingrenamedthe NeedleandSyringeProgram, thusbringingourstateinto alignmentwiththerestof Australia.
Anotherverywelcome announcementcamewith the2024MayBudget,with theAustraliangovernment investmentof$23.7million overtwoyearsforhepatitis BandhepatitisCinitiatives. Thesectorisalsokeenly awaitingthereleaseofthe newNationalHepatitisBand HepatitisCStrategies,which havebeendelayedduring theyear.Thereleaseof thesedocumentsandrelated jurisdictionalimplementation plansareofgreat importanceinguidingthe 2030hepatitiselimination targets.Itisnowhopedthat theywillbereleasedbefore theendof2024.
Locally,HepatitisSAwas fortunatetohaveboth ourmainSAHealthgrants receiveadditional2.3% indexationontopofthe usual2.5%indexation,in recognitionoftheincreased costsofawardwagerises
inJuly2023andgeneral
thesegrantsweredueto extendedfortwoyearsuntil theendofJune2026,when itislikelythattenderswill becalledfortheongoing fundingofbothprograms.

HepatitisSANSPPeer Projectsconsistsofateam ofPeerEducatorsplaced athighvolumeNSPsites toprovideharmreduction servicestopeoplewhoinject drugs.ThePeerEducation teamissupportedbya CoordinatorandaProject Worker.
ThisyearPeerEducators continuedtoprovideservices full-timeat3‘Primary’ NSPs:NoarlungaHealth Village,NoarlungaCentre; WongganggaTurtpandi AboriginalHealthService, PortAdelaide;andDASSA NorthernService,Elizabeth. PeerEducatorsalso continuedprovidingNSP servicesonasessional (parttime)basisatUniting CommunitiesStreetlink, AdelaideandatDASSA Central,Stepney.
FromDecember,anNSP PeerEducatorwasplaced attheSalvationArmy SoberingUpUnit(SUU)NSP inWhitmoreSquareona sessionalbasis.TheSUUNSP clientbaseispredominantly male(90%)andinthe majorityhomeless,living roughorlivinginsupported accommodation.Having someoneavailableinthe NSPwithlivedexperience, providingup-to-datesafer injectingeducationwithout judgement,hasenabled
manySUUclientstoimprove thesafetyoftheirinjecting practices.

ThisyeartheNSPPeer Projectsrecordedabout 2,000moreclient interactionsthanlastyear. Therewereincreasesinall areas–morenewclient interactions;220,000more syringesdistributed;and 500moreinteractions withAboriginalandTorres StraitIslanderserviceusers. Thisprojecteffectively combinededucation,health promotion,andcreative expressionwhilefostering meaningfuldiscussionsabout theseimportanthealth issues.

DayCentre,TheArches–AnglicareandCommon Ground–HousingChoices wherethepeerstested 106people(76menand30 women).
Incustodialsettingsthe peersattendedtheAdelaide RemandCentreonaweekly basis,providing436HCV RNAtestsforthemaleson remand,whovolunteeredto betestedastheywantedto knowtheirhepatitisCstatus. TheViralHepatitisNurses wereabletoprovidethe DAAtreatmentquicklyto anyparticipantswhotested HCVRNApositive.
AttheAdelaideWomen’s Prison,thepeershadharm reductionconversations with120womenthereand provided16HCVRNAtests withwomenwhobelieved theymayhavebeenatrisk ofhepatitisC.
Thepeersattendeda HealthExpoatCadell TrainingCentrespeaking with113maleprisoners aboutsaferinjecting(24 individuals),debunking mythsabouttreatmentfor HCV(74people),andallayed concernsaboutre-infection andhowthiscanbeavoided (8people).HepatitisSA’s ‘EatingIn’resource,withall recipesbaseduponthemost basicofprisonbuy-listswas hugelypopularwiththose prisonerswhoareableto self-caterandwehandedout 109ofthesebookletsthat day.
HepatitisSAreceiveda fromSAPrisonHealth contributiontowardthe healthofprisonersinSouth Australia.
Wealsocommencedathree monthtrialfortheprovision
ofhepatitisCrapidtesting withtheNunkuwarrin YuntiMobileOutreach NeedleandSyringeProgram, whichhasamobilevan providingNSPservicesat locationsacrosstheCBD
toFriday.However,this wasnotpopularasmost accessingtheservicewere inahurrytobeelsewhere andwereawarethatthey couldaccessourservices nearbyattheHuttStDay CentreorWestCareBaptist CareServicesatatimemore convenientforthem.Only8 testswereconductedduring the3-monthtrial.
