Mark Farmer Memorial Award 2013 ABOUT MARK FARMER Mark Farmer was a member of Hepatitis Victoria who demonstrated a strong commitment to self management. Before he became very ill following a liver transplant in 2008 he exercised regularly, abstained from drinking alcohol, concentrated on eating well, and regularly attended the Hepatitis Victoria Support Group. Mark Farmer was a member of Hepatitis Victoria for over eight years. In 2003 he took this a step further and became a member of the Hepatitis Victoria Board. Importantly Mark brought his personal experience of living with hepatitis C, and that was of great benefit to the Board. He was active, committed and a highly valued Board member. Mark was also prepared to talk to the media at a time when there was incredible difficulty finding people with viral hepatitis who were prepared to be publicly identified. This was an indication of his determination to see issues related to stigma and discrimination improve for all people affected by viral hepatitis. His other contribution was as a long term member of our monthly Support Group. Sadly, Mark passed away on Monday 18th May 2009. This award is an appropriate way of acknowledging his achievements and commitment in an ongoing and meaningful way.
