TYPES OF COOKERS The types of outdoor cookers vary greatly, from a grill to a smoker to a baker. When selecting one, there are several things to consider, says Eric Forrester, owner/pitmaster at Mason-Dixon Barbecue Services in Greencastle, Pa. Think about price range, experience with outdoor cooking and what type of cooking will be done, Eric recommends, noting that he helps customers find an option that will work best for them individually. Some popular options include: Green Mountain Pellet cookers. “You can smoke, grill or bake on them,” Eric says, noting that they are easy to use. As wood-fired stoves, they are digitally controlled. Customers can download a recipe from an app and watch on their phone as it cooks. Food-grade wood pellets are used for these.
Big Green Eggs are smokers and bakers, and can be considered portable brick ovens.

You can hold a temperature on an Egg anywhere from 170 degrees up to about 800 degrees, and anywhere in between in 5-degree increments. Once you learn how to use an Egg, you can cook anything. Referred to as a kamado-style grill, the Egg has a lifetime warranty. “That design has been around for about 2,000 years,” Eric says. “They made it to the states after World War II. The GIs brought them back from Japan. To this day, if you find one that has Japanese characters on it, it is actually worth anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000. There isn’t air escaping anywhere out of this Big Green Egg. The only way for air to get out is if I open up the top and if I open up the bottom. Other than that, it seals up very tight. Plus, the

puts your charcoal out. The next time you go in there, you can stir and knock the ash off the charcoal, and you can relight that charcoal.” TASTE DIFFERENCE Using a Big Green Egg requires a little experimentation, Eric notes. “There’s a learning curve there. There’s not as much art in the pellet cooker. With the pellet cookers, you digitally set the temperature. You do it on your phone. As long as you have electricity and you have pellets, then it will stay whatever temperature you set it. There’s a different flavor profile that comes off of a pellet cooker. Even though you’re cooking off of a wood fire the entire time, it’s not the same as cooking over charcoal and wood.” “Say if I cooked ribs on a Big Green Egg, and I cooked ribs on a pellet cooker, if you tasted one and then tasted the other, you would absolutely know the difference. But, if I just cooked them on a pellet cooker and gave

A charcoal with “easy-light” ability might contain chemicals that should not be used in a smoker.

I love being able to help people destress and unwind, on top of helping them achieve healthier skin and teaching them how to better take care of it.” Elizabeth
Renner,
an
esthetician
at
Bodyworks Massage Center in Hagerstown, says her clients’ experience is just as important as the health of their skin. “I really enjoy making people look and feel amazing every day. When you look good, you feel good, and I really enjoy making my clients feel good. That goes along with educating my clients on proper skin care for their specific needs.” After consulting with the client about skincare concerns, the esthetician will explain how to get prepared for the selected treatment, which is usually a facial, but can also include a variety of other things, such as hair removal, waxing or skin care for other parts of the body. Those elements also might be worked into a facial routine. The esthetician will usually leave the room to allow the client to disrobe (if necessary) and change into a spa wrap or set of robes. The esthetician will then perform a base cleansing of the skin to remove any makeup or excess debris, then will perform a skin analysis of the client’s face to determine how best to customize the skin treatment and what products are most appropriate. During analysis, the esthetician will generally use a mag loop (a large magnifying glass with a light) to look for any unique skin characteristics or conditions that the client might not have noticed, such as capillary damage, pore size, excess oils, dryness, congestion or hyperpigmentation (sunspots or freckles). Following analysis, the esthetician will give the client a brief overview of the skin condition and a description of the methods and products that will be best for treatment.

Elizabeth Renner, an esthetician at Bodyworks Massage Center in Hagerstown, says her clients’ experience is just as important as the health of their skin.
A TYPICAL FACIAL Following that is the facial. Most facials will have a pattern, such as the classic European facial (also called a spa facial). Clients usually can choose how long they want their facial to take, often ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. A typical facial involves cleansing and thoroughly exfoliating the skin, then massaging it to boost circulation and promote relaxation. Explore the outdoors in Blair County, Pennsylvania Outdoor adventures can offer more than a breath of fresh air. Spending time outdoors is good for you, educational and fun. You can find a variety of recreational activities all in one spot when you visit a Pennsylvania State Park. One of the state’s most unique parks is located in Hollidaysburg, Blair County. Canoe Creek State Park was chosen by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of “Twenty Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks.” When you make the turn onto Canoe Creek Road leading right into the park, you’ll quickly feel like you’re on an island of nature. The 961-acre state park is tucked into the Pennsylvania mountains. Canoe Creek State Park offers 12 miles of trails through forests, wetlands and along the lakeshore. The Limestone Loop trail is a favorite with visitors to the park. This 1.2 mile trail is rated as easy and follows the old railroad
grade to the Blair Limestone Company Kilns. “As you’re exploring along this trail, it’s really awesome when you enter the area where the kilns stand. They have a profound presence in the park,” says Jennifer Fleck, marketing manager at Explore Altoona. Geological formations in the park are rich in limestone. The Petersburg spur of the Pennsylvania Railroad traveled through what is now Canoe Creek State Park to connect the lime kilns with the mainline railroad during the early 1900s. The limestone was extracted and used for many purposes, including supplying a raw material for the once-thriving iron and steel industry of Pennsylvania. Once mined, the limestone was taken to a kiln and heated. The kiln structures have remained as one of the park’s main features. Like many of the park’s trails, it’s a great trail for sighting woodland birds and wildflowers. Canoe Creek State Park is on the path followed by
numerous species of migratory birds, including waterfowl, bald eagles and ospreys. The wetlands provide habitat for birds like the bluebird, oriole, red-winged blackbird and the brown thrasher. In addition to hiking trails, Canoe Creek State Park features a 155-acre lake with yearround fishing, as well as a sand beach that is open for swimming during the summer months. The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. There are modern cabins on a hill overlooking the lake. Or, visitors can stay in one of a number of hotels located less than 5 miles from the park. There are no entrance fees or day use fees to visit a state park in Pennsylvania. Visitors can hike the trails, enjoy the beach or picnic at Canoe Creek at no charge. written by JENNIFER DOLAN DOCTOR OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AT CUMBERLAND VALLEY VETERINARY CLINIC We have been looking forward to summer, with its great weather, pool parties, good food and lots of outdoor activities. Backyard science and the outdoors Keep children engaged throughout the summer written by ANTHONY WILLIAMS
BEACON House founder and chief executive officer
Some of my favorite memories as a child are from investigating the backyard of my home to figure out the science of nature. As an educator for the past two decades, I see an increasing disconnection between students and the natural world. We live in a time where there is so much media and technology that often, we simply do not take time to smell the roses or dig in the dirt with our hands. There is so much that children can learn from exploring their backyards, local parks or grassy/natural areas near their home. Here are some easy activities that will help engage your child in learning that can take place outside this summer. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE We hear a lot about the environment as we are living in a time where global climate change is evident to most. How can you connect your backyard to the rest of the world? Here are a couple of ways: NATIVE OR ALIEN: Have your kids identify plants in your backyard. This is a great way for kids to start learning how to use dichotomous keys to classify plants based on certain distinct characteristics or patterns. Then, have them identify whether the plants are native to your area or if they are alien. Have them research the potential harms to having alien plants in the backyard and learn about any alien plants that become invasive and what that means. a. Plant Identification activity: fergusonfoundation. org/btw-students/plant-identification b. Glossary of terms: fergusonfoundation.org/btwstudents/watershed-glossary SOIL SCIENCE: How often have your and your child looked at the soil at various places around your house? Take samples from four or five locations and have your child identify physical characteristics of each soil type: color, texture, composition, types of organisms found, smell and more. Then, have him or her make a prediction about which soil sample is the healthiest. Also, if you can afford it, find some pH strips or a pH meter to record this information. Have your child, with your help, look online for a chart about the types of soil and what makes them healthy. Have your child evaluate the samples to determine what type of soil it is and whether it is healthy. If the soil is not so healthy, have him or her help create a plan to make it better.
LIFE SCIENCE We always think that we have to go to a zoo or park to find life to explore and understand. However, in our yards, flowerbeds and gardens, there should be a lot of life going on that can be explored by using a magnifying glass or cheap microscope. COMPARING PLANT AND ANIMAL STRUCTURES: A great way to get kids really thinking about the diversity of life in the world is to have them take a hard look at plant and animal structures. Have them compare flowers and trees, various insects and critters found in your backyard to see similarities and differences. Then have them start looking at the differences and predicting why the differences in structures occur. There are some great books that can help them understand the differences. The series I love most is the “What if…” series by Sandra Markle. The books, which can be found on Amazon, encourage children to learn about animal structures and functions. HOW DO PLANTS REPRODUCE?: Have your children investigate this summer how plants reproduce. Do they know that seeds are how
plants make the next generation? Do they understand pollen and fruit in the process of plant reproduction? As you are enjoying fresh flowers, honey and fruit this summer, break down this wonderful process of nature for them and help them start understanding how bees, along with other pollinators, are important for plant reproduction. Explain how fruit is a way for plants to get their seeds dispersed to other locations as animals eat them and leave the seeds deposited behind.
LIFE CYCLE OF A CATERPILLAR/BUTTERFLY: From reading the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to exploring your backyard, looking for the chrysalis of various caterpillar/butterflies and watching to see when butterflies emerge, engaging your children with the life cycle of the caterpillar/butterfly will be a lot of fun and help them understand that various organisms have different forms throughout their life cycles. PHYSICAL SCIENCE ROCK TYPES: Around your house or neighborhood, you have various types of rocks. Let your children take pictures or bring samples inside and start analyzing the rocks for physical characteristics. Have them try to classify the rocks as sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic by the definitions of each.
RAINWATER CHEMISTRY: Have you ever wondered how rainwater compares to your tap water or a bottle of water? Have your kids examine the pH, color, odor and clarity of rainwater compared to the water that comes out of your tap and a bottle. Then, put the waters to the test by using them to water a seed that you plant in three different containers, and water only with one type of water. Make a prediction about which water will lead to the most plant growth and why. Water and check often to see what happens. Whatever exploring of your own backyard you do with your children this summer, remember that the process is about exploration and curiosity. Encourage them to ask questions. Get a magnifying glass, some simple household items and pH strips for various experiments. Use the internet to extend your resources and stop by our Mulberry Lofts Family Learning Center for supplies and ideas all summer long —and all year — to engage your kids. Quaker style. It looks like an A-frame with the front of the roof extended past the front wall, overhanging the entrance to provide room for a front porch. The most complicated style of shed is often referred to as a Victorian style, but at Fisher, it is called a chalet style. This style includes a dormer over the front door. Lastly, the barn style has a gambrel roof and can be built as a single- or two-story shed. Many shed companies, like Pine Creek, Kelly Moore Sheds and Fisher, offer specialized structures in addition to the four standard styles. Chicken coops are an example of a structure that is designed for one specific use. Fisher and Pine Creek offer shed designs specifically for children’s playhouses with

POSSIBLE USES FOR SHEDS Most customers who buy sheds use them for storage, often for gardening tools and outdoor entertaining supplies. However, new trends are emerging as assembled, custombuilt sheds become more cost-effective. Moore says outdoor entertaining is the second-most popular reason her customers purchase a custom-built shed. Pool houses, recreation rooms, man caves, she sheds, bars, bathhouses and children’s playhouses are popular uses. Miller recently completed the installation of a 24-by-24foot shed for use as a pool house. One half of the space is

a changing room and the other space is an entertainment room, complete with a full wet bar. The shed was already wired for electrical and coaxial outlets. The next most common purpose for a shed is for extra sleeping space. Guest rooms, in-law suites, bunkhouses and hunting cabins are growing in popularity. Miller recalled a customer who used a 14-by-26-foot A-frame as a hunting blind/cabin. The customer had 12 windows installed around the perimeter of the cabin so he and his hunting buddies could have an individual window from which to shoot game. Tiny-house living is a rapidly increasing trend. Sheds can be finished with the same insulation and utility access as a house. The high-quality siding, insulated windows and doors, insulated roofs and floors make the sheds functional year-round. Assembled sheds are delivered with the studs

Most custom-built, assembled sheds can be moved after installation, so home renters are not precluded from buying a shed. But they must get their landlord’s permission first. If the customer is buying a shed that has already been constructed, such as those at the seller’s business, or if ordering a shed during the off-season, it might take as little as two weeks for delivery. services to homeowners, investors, Realtors and builders in the four-state region. Her eye for design is rooted in her upbringing as a“military brat.” "We moved all the time. My parents tended to buy homes wherever we went, so I always watched that process of getting the house ready, packing, getting stuff ready to go, every two or three years.” For fun, she toured model homes with her mom.

“So, that’s where I say I got my start.“
Staging options
Before hiring a staging company, a homeowner should check that the company is properly insured, just as a moving company would be, Shari recommends. Also make sure the company will invest the time required to do a good job. “We go out and preview it,”Shari says, referring to a vacant BEFORE

furniture. Our furniture is all wrapped. It goes on the truck properly and comes off the truck properly. That’s a whole day,” she says. Another day is spent doing the actual staging. “Then, when it sells, we have to go destage the house. There are two or three days that go into a vacant-stage process.” Staged Above offers three components of service: Vacant/ model home staging, owner-occupied consultation and owner-occupied consultation plus staging. Vacant staging is the most easily recognizable type of staging and is used by builders, investors, people who flip houses and owners selling homes they don’t live in anymore.
Small accents can make a big difference when staging a kitchen.
“What we put in those homes is based on who our buyers are,” Shari says. “There’s never a one-size-fits-all approach. If I’m in D.C., it’s a completely different look than if I am in

trying to identify who that buyer is and stage for that buyer.” Owner-occupied is for people who are preparing to list the house where they live. “I'll come in and talk to the homeowner, start at the front and go over everything, things that need to be done as far as updates, what’s going to give them the biggest bang for their buck, whether it’s painting or new hardware or new lights,” Shari says. “Again, it all depends on the location and the price point because there’s never a one-size-fits-all. When people ask why a stager is necessary, Shari is quick to defend the merits of her trade. “A lot of people, when I come into their house, will say, ‘Oh, I know what to do. I watch HGTV.’ They think it’s just going to be me saying, ‘take down personal photos and declutter,’ but it’s so much more than that. Every home deserves to be presented well, regardless of price point and location. Even a house that’s $100,000 benefits, in my mind, from an owner-occupied consult, because why wouldn’t you want your house to sell as quickly as possible for the most

How do we identify those, using what you have?” “Typically, with owner-occupied, I leave, and they know what they can do without me ever coming back to actually do it. I offer unlimited follow-up if they have questions. If they’re buying new bedding and they‘re not sure if that’s what I meant, they can text me while they’re at the store. We can work through it before it goes on the market or is ready for the pictures.” Owner-occupied plus staging is for people who want Shari to provide items that will add to the existing décor of their homes. “That’s where we bring in art, accessories, soft goods for key areas,” Shari says, explaining that details are necessary because most people shop online for homes today. “They’re not calling the agents and saying, ‘What do you have for me?’ They’re already doing their shopping on their phones on a tiny screen. Those pictures have to look amazing on a phone."
10 reasons to stage a vacant property
EMOTION A vacant house feels cold and impersonal. Staging creates a warm and inviting environment so a potential buyer will emotionally connect to the home and start mentally unpacking and imaging their life in the space. HIGHER SALES PRICE The National Association of Realtors states that those who invest 1% to 3% of the value of their home on staging, updates and/or repairs can make or save 8% to 10% on the sale of the home. QUICKER SALE Time is money. A staged home sells 80% faster than an unstaged home. STAND OUT More than 95% of buyers start their home search online. Photos of a beautifully staged home are much more eye-catching than a cold, empty, unstaged home. On average, buyers look at 10 listings before choosing which houses to see in person. POTENTIAL Staging clearly defines spatial relationships so buyers can visualize their own items in the home. This is important because 90% of people can’t envision what an empty home would look like with furniture. This often causes doubt that the furniture they already own would fit in the property.

SPATIAL REFERENCE A staged home will create the spatial frame of reference needed to show the true size of the home. Buyers overestimate the size of their furniture when viewing a vacant room and the room feels too small. A staged property with properly scaled and placed furniture will allow prospective buyers to envision their furniture in the space. FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE Small imperfections, such as wall smudges, are easily detected when the home is vacant. Furnished and accessorized rooms minimize the appearance of those minor imperfections, whereas empty space draws the buyers’ eyes to them. INVESTMENT TO STAGE The investment to stage typically costs less money than your first price drop after the home has been on the market and has become stagnant. – www.stagedabove.com
Capturing an amazing photograph that hooks a buyer’s interest is key. “That starts with me coming in and talking about all these things,” Shari says. “How do we get people to focus on the space and their eye not go to all the color on the bed or on the couch? Most people have things; they just don‘t think about how they could be used.” Changes can include something as simple as flipping a patterned quilt on a bed so the white side is showing. The room will seem brighter, which will cause viewers to focus on the room instead of the bed covering. "Buyers right now, if they see a house and see the antiques, the quilts and these colors that are very offtrend, they tend to feel that that house is dated and are not excited to call the agent to see that house because they’re so focused on the furniture,” Shari says. “My goal is to get people not focused on what you have, but on the house itself.” The goal is to have buyers mentally unpack from the moment they walk in the house.

Stagers focus on ‘heart of the home’
When showing a vacant home, not all the rooms need to be staged. Shari Auldridge, owner of Staged Above, recommends staging the “heart of the home.” “In order to get buyers to mentally unpack, I always say that we need to stage at least your family room or main living room, kitchen, a dining space and your master bedroom,” she notes. “The only time we ever recommend stage extras is when there’s awkward spaces or spaces that are hard to understand. Sometimes, when an investor flips properties, there are some weird, awkward rooms or maybe bedrooms that are hard to understand if you can really fit a bed in there. That’s when we really want to fit a bed in there. I don’t ever stage with things that are unrealistic.” Shari provides these recommendations for those planning to show an occupied home: WHITE TOWELS White towels create a clean, crisp, hotel look. Even if a homeowner already has white towels, Shari recommends buying new ones and shows the homeowner how to fold them. A NEW DOORMAT A new doormat provides a good first impression to welcome a potential homebuyer and “does a world of good” to make people feel that the home is new and fresh. Avoid personalized doormats. Homeowners don’t typically replace doormats at the front door. “A lot of us tend to go in through our garage, and we never look at our house through the front-door impression.” THROW PILLOWS Replace floral-print throw pillows with several new neutral ones. Throw pillows brighten rooms, especially when used on beds and couches. UNCOVER HARDWOODS Have rugs covering hardwoods? Roll up the rugs and store them “because hardwood floors sell houses all day long.” CHECK LIGHTING Make sure light bulbs are the same color (white or yellow) throughout the house. “Make sure the light bulbs are the brightest they can be in each space and not different colors in each one, because that’s really awkward-looking when people come in.” UPDATE BEDDING Update bedding or add layers, for the master bedroom especially. The use of layers will make the master bedroom feel like a hotel room. – Lisa Tedrick Prejean
So, you want to be a stager? When Shari hires a new staff member, she wants to make sure the person is suited for the work. She recently conducted an “on-the-job" test for applicants. “We made them come to the warehouse, pull items and told them they have 30 minutes to put together a look,” Shari says.“We made them do the physical stuff. We made them help put stuff on our van so they understood that it’s not just fluffing a pillow. I put people through the wringer. That’s how we hired last time. If you can’t be on camera, don’t send me your résumé because we do so much social media and video, you have to be comfortable with that work.” The use of trendy colors, such as this black, white and green combination, provides a sense of being up-to-date and appealing.

Doris earned a handmade Olympic medal for walking the halls of Meritus Medical Center. Her nurse, Melissa, helped Doris overcome the fear of getting out of bed and together they inched past patient rooms. Melissa knows walking increases strength and endurance and prevents patient falls. That’s why she and her colleagues developed Getting Stronger, Living Longer, a mobility program for medical-surgical patients. Today, with help from nurses like Melissa, patients leave the hospital stronger, more independent and prepared for life at home. Discover the full article at Meritushealth.com/AmazingNurses

Shari says. “People come like it’s Black Friday. Last year, people were standing in line at 7 a.m.” The sale started at 10 a.m. She rented portable heaters and brought cocoa to her customers. “It was the craziest thing,” Shari says. “I want to retire my inventory at some point. We’ve used it enough, and it’s not damaged per se, but it’s time to update our inventory a little bit." “It's not so much that there’s a store that they can come to. Everything’s always for sale in all our vacant properties, basically. We’ve done some spec homes, model homes in Gaithersburg, Md., where we've had people buy an entire household of furniture.” While a date hasn’t been set for the next warehouse sale, information will be available on the company website, www. stagedabove.com and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/

Shari and her staff recently staged a duplex on Hawkins Circle in Hagerstown. In this newly constructed home, the layout is a little challenging “in the sense that we want to define some of these spaces,” Shari says. “It’s a little bit more open. Sometimes, people have a hard time understanding open spaces. This new construction has a fireplace that separates two areas. If people walk into it, and it’s vacant, they have a hard time figuring out, ‘What is this room, and what do I do with it?’In this particular one, we are going to do a four-chair conversational grouping on one side. Then the other side is going to be the family room, which is open to the kitchen.” “There’s also a separate dining room, so it's not like it’s just dining and living. It’s definitely two living spaces," Shari says. “It’s just a matter of figuring out who that buyer is. That’s still probably going to be that younger buyer. It could be somebody who’s retiring, though, who just wants one level, so it could probably go a couple different ways.”
Warehouse sale
While Shari has a warehouse full of staging items, she does not have a retail business. “We’re not a store, but I do an annual warehouse sale,”

African-American art and children’s book illustrations to be displayed written by REBECCA MASSIE LANE
Director of Washington County Museum of Fine Arts
Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown's City Park is free of charge and bustling with activity throughout the year. There are two special exhibitions on view this summer at the museum, along with associated programming. "The Blues and the Abstract Truth: Voices of African-American Art" features works created by African-American artists from 1929 to the present. It includes more than 60 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs drawn from the collections of the University of Maryland, University College, Adelphi; the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of Visual Arts and Culture of African-Americans; and the African Diaspora, University of Maryland, College Park. The exhibition focuses on themes related to family, identity, jazz and social justice.
It showcases works by artists such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Alma Thomas, Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker and Willie Cole. Especially for children, the museum is hosting an exhibition of children’s book illustrations, "My Friend Eric Rohmann." Opening in early July, the exhibition Eric Rohmann’s “Clara and Asha,” an oil on paper created in 2005, is part includes 67 original illustrations of an exhibition at Washington County Muse um of Fine Arts organized by Caldecott Award-winning artist by the National Center for Children’s Illustr ated Rohmann.
