The Tailgate Guys tailgate site has plenty of room for all types of tailgating activities, including throwing a football.

LOCAL FLAVOR written by LAURA EMMONS submitted photography Whether it’s a championship high school team or a Division 1 NCAA powerhouse, football is an American pastime. Gameday parties in stadium parking lots, called tailgating, range from simple to extravagant, but all of them allow fans to become part of the game experience. Here in the Cumberland Valley of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, football fans have their own twists on the tailgating phenomenon. At Home Places looked at tailgating trends for one high school team, two NCAA Division II teams and two Big Ten teams. Martinsburg (W.Va.) High School’s (MHS) varsity football team won the last three West Virginia State Championship titles, and the team won the championship six out of the last 10 years. It is led by David Walker, who has been head coach at MHS for 25 years. Walker was named the 2016 national foot-

Shippensburg (Pa.) University (Ship U) has a successful football program under head coach Mark Maciejewski. It is Coach Mac’s ninth season as head coach, and his 19th season with the Ship U football program. He is a two-time AFCA division II region one Coach of the Year and has had eight successive winning seasons. John Knutelsky, a former president of the Shippensburg University Foundation’s Raiders Club, current member of the advisory board for the Ship U College of Arts & Sciences, longtime resident and parks manager of Shippensburg Township, and Ship U alumnus, is an expert host of tailgate parties at Ship U. Shepherd University’s head coach is Ernie McCook, who took over the position in 2018 after serving 18 years as an assistant in the Rams football program. Chris Colbert, the current president of the Shepherd University Foundation and a member of the board of the Athletic Club, is a Shepherd University alumnus, was born and raised in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and is an expert on hosting tailgate events at Shepherd Rams football games. Shepherd and Shippensburg are members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in Division II of the NCAA. Penn State University’s Nittany Lions football team won two national championships (in 1982 and 1986), and the team has appeared in 48 college bowl games. James Franklin has a 45-21 winning record in his fifth year as head coach at Penn. The University of Maryland’s Terrapins football team won one national championship (in 1953). The team has nine Atlantic Coast Conference titles and has appeared in 24 college bowl games. Head coach Mike Locksley was hired in December. White Turkey Chili Recipe provided by Laura Emmons Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey 15.5-ounce can butter beans, rinsed and drained 15.5-ounce can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 2 15.5-ounce cans hominy, rinsed and drained 1 white onion, peeled and chopped 2 green bell peppers, cleaned and chopped OR 16-ounce bag frozen diced onions and green peppers 2 cloves garlic, minced OR 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon cumin Âź teaspoon white pepper 2 tablespoons salsa verde 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup heavy whipping cream Wondra Quick-Mixing All-Purpose flour, as needed Preparation: Brown ground turkey. Drain off fat. Place cooked turkey in slow cooker. Add the rest of the ingredients except cream and flour in the order listed above. Cook in slow cooker for 8 hours on low temperature setting. At end of cooking time, add cream and mix thoroughly. Add flour sparingly until a thick stew forms. Serves 8.

Prep tip: Brown ground turkey in advance, drain off fat, and let it sit until cool enough to place in a storage container. If preparation takes place less than a day before cook time, store in the refrigerator. Otherwise, store in freezer until ready to cook. Prep tip: If you do not have the time to open cans when ready to start the chili, open cans for beans ahead of time and store the contents in a container in the refrigerator. This can be done up to three days in advance of cooking. Tip: Most grocery stores sell bags of frozen onions and green peppers combined, so you only have to purchase one bag. Note: Wondra flour is a quick-dissolving type of flour manufactured by General Mills Inc., specifically designed for use in soups, gravies and sauces.

Suggestion: Serve with cornbread. Nutrition: Item Per Serving Total

State-of-the-art museum fosters American art in Altoona, Pa.

Founded in 1976, The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) is a community art museum successfully operating the nation’s longest-running museum satellite system with five museum facilities in the central and southwestern Pennsylvania cities of Altoona, Bedford, Johnstown, Ligonier and Loretto. The museum maintains a permanent collection of more than 4,500 works by local, regional, national and international artists. SAMA’s museums offer award-winning education programs, special events and approximately three dozen exhibitions annually. SAMA’s Altoona Museum was the institution’s first satellite facility, opening in 1979. The museum moved to its present location in the Brett Building in Downtown Altoona in 1995 and includes state-of-the-art exhibition and storage space for quarterly exhibitions and a rare collection of albumen photographic prints by William H. Rau, who was the official photographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad at the turn of the 20th century. SAMA offers a rotating schedule of art exhibitions by local, regional and national artists, plus exhibitions culled from the museum’s permanent collection. A selection of tablescapes on display.

These are only four of the Amazing Tablescapes that will be featured in the Kaylor Atrium at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) from Oct. 1 to 5. Amazing Tablescapes is conceived as a celebration of 88 years of service to the region by the MFA and an annual fundraising effort to provide continuing support of this unique community treasure. Amazing Tablescapes Week will kick off the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 1, with a“Meet the Designers”preview reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission to the reception is $30. Janet Brakewagen and Sukey Rankin are working on a table about Hagerstown’s beloved City Park. The Weavers Guild, led by Barbara Diefendorfer, Deb Lawson and Lauren Peterson, will create “Japanese Fiber Art Fantasy.” Lola Mosby, JoAnne Jackson and Leslie Smith are making a table on the theme, “The Blues.”Sherry Cramer will take visitors for a ride on“The Orient Express.” During the week, Amazing Tablescapes will be on view Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plan to come with friends, family members, colleagues, garden clubs, bridge groups, breakfast groups, church groups, painting groups, book clubs or tour groups, and then have lunch or an early dinner at one of the downtown restaurants. While viewing the Amazing Tablescapes, vote for your favorite by putting donation dollars into the jar for the best Tablescape. Last year, artist Cindy Roberts Downs won the “popular choice” for her table, “Selfie,” a whimsical and comical group of expertly welded metal people enjoying a goofy dinner. This year, visitors can look forward to another of Downs’ amusing portrayals called“The Art Lesson.”

The Amazing Tablescapes week’s festivities will culminate with a gala fundraiser on Oct. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. to benefit the MFA, with dinner created especially for the occasion by Leiters’ Fine Catering. Admission is $150. The evening will begin with appetizers -- a gourmet cheese platter, crustini with blue cheese mousse, fresh seasonal fruit with Pina Colada dip and caprese kabobs. A full bar will be provided. Guests will enjoy a served dinner; everyone will have a choice of entrée, either center-cut beef tenderloin with whiskey peppercorn sauce; Maryland crab cake with tartar sauce; chicken roulade florentine with roasted red pepper cream sauce; or a portabella stack with vegetables on a roasted red pepper sauce. Wine pairings will be offered with dinner, as well as water, followed by a cheesecake dessert topped with chocolate or fruit sauce, tea and coffee. Many of the designers’ guests will come in costumes that match the theme of their tables, and violinist Todd Medcalf will provide theme music for each table. Imagine coming as a U.S. president if you are a guest at “A State Dinner” with designer Denny Warrenfeltz, where every plate honors a different president.

Other Amazing Tablescape designers include: Eleanor Lakin and Yvette May; Tricia Johnson, Kim Tagg and Kathi Smith. In addition to seeing the Amazing Tablescapes and all their details, meeting designers and enjoying a beautiful meal, guests will leave with a unique favor created by the table designers. Since 1931, the MFA has been free and open to the public and has hosted more than 3.7 million visitors from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 65 foreign countries. Less than 1% of all municipalities across the country have a nationally accredited fine arts museum. Plan now to see Amazing Tablescapes at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and help support one of the region’s greatest treasures!

A Trusted Partner in Cancer Care When her father was diagnosed with early-stage bladder cancer while she was attending college for a music degree, Victoria M. Giffi, M.D., decided to become a doctor. “I found immunotherapy so intriguing,” says Dr. Giffi. “Because of this science, my dad is with us today.” Fast forward to the present and Dr. Giffi, a hematologistoncologist with Meritus Hematology and Oncology Specialists, helps patients understand their cancer diagnosis, treatment options, side effects and lifestyle changes.

THREE WORDS NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR

Hearing the words “you have cancer” is a life-changing moment. Understanding this, Dr. Giffi devotes ample time to discuss the diagnosis and explain the big picture. “I find that people are so strong,” says Dr. Giffi. One of Dr. Giffi’s patients put it this way: “I never wanted an oncologist, but Dr. Giffi went above and beyond to explain my situation and the plan going forward.”

YOU AT THE CENTER OF CARE

Her father’s cancer diagnosis was one turning point in Dr. Giffi’s life, but another defining moment was a conversation she overheard while practicing medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center. One of her patients commented to a nurse that Dr. Giffi takes the weight of the world off his shoulders. “I had always been so focused on the disease, staging and medication that I forgot how important a conversation is to my patients,” says Dr. Giffi. Throughout her seven years of practicing oncology, Dr. Giffi understands that her patients want to be heard. As one of her patient’s stated: “Dr. Giffi empowers me to make choices for me alone and she never makes me feel like just another patient on the schedule.” While she treats many cancer patients, no two patients are the same. “You can’t apply the same template to every patient,” says Dr. Giffi. “You have to see where the patient is coming from and what treatments they want to pursue.”

JENNIFER GRIMM, REGISTERED DIETITIAN

Grimm reviews a patient’s medical history, medications, lab results and physician notes. She works closely with social workers and RN navigators. “A lot of education starts even before me with the nurse navigators,” Grimm says. “They’re fantastic resources to get the pieces that you won’t see normally on a patient’s chart,” Grimm

gov/WhatIsMyPlate, as well as the American Institute for Cancer

After a diagnosis, patients are bombarded with information, and Grimm realizes that is not the appropriate time to talk about nutrition. “They just can’t handle it all on that same day,”she says.“I usually try to get a foundation of what the patient is doing currently. Are they a person who eats three meals a day? Do they only eat one?”

Easing symptoms It’s important to gain insight into what a patient does in his or her day-to-day life and then determine how cancer treatment will have an impact. “We’re trying to ease symptoms as much as possible,” Grimm says, noting that it is important for patients to maintain strength throughout the course of treatment.“That’s our goal – to get them through treatment and not have any treatment breaks.” Dietitians will offer recommendations so a patient can still have good nutrition with modifications. For a patient who has problems swallowing, texture modifications will be suggested, and the foods will be easy to digest.

Breaking down myths Grimm tries to help people understand that no one food cures cancer, but if a cancer treatment team can make an impact on what a patient eats – to make small changes so food is more nutritious – the patient probably is going to notice a significant difference in the way they feel. It’s common for people to fear food during treatment because they’ve read something on the Internet or heard from a friend or a family member that they should eat certain things or not eat certain things, which can add to a patient’s confusion, Grimm says. “There are a lot of myths, so trying to dispel those as much as possible is a large part of my job.” Examples of food myths include: “Sugar feeds cancer,”or “The alkaline diet is the key to not have cancer.” “You get an opportunity to really dive into some more education on re-routing them back to a more healthier diet long-term, instead of these fads,” Grimm says. “There’s a lot of misinformation.

After treatment A survivorship program, developed by RN navigators, allows patients to return to the center on a weekly basis after treatments are completed. Topics for the program include medical concerns, finances, nutrition/cooking, finances and yoga/mindfulness. Grimm makes presentations for the nutrition/cooking segment. “I’ll bring in food and have them try things with fruits, vegetables and other easy-to-prepare recipes,”Grimm says. The next nutrition segment is planned for Oct. 16.

When treatments have ended, patients won’t be coming to the center every day, but the staff checks on them with phone calls and a follow-up appointment, usually a month later.

How to create a

dog-friendly yard written by MELISSA ERICKSON MORE CONTENT NOW

Dangerous and safe plants

A dog-friendly yard is one that pets can romp around in safely without harming the landscape or themselves. It’s a yard both pets and people can enjoy together. “Letting dogs have fun outside is great for their quality of life,”said Dr. Gary Richter, a veterinarian and a member of Rover.com’s Dog People Panel. “If people want their pets to have free access to their yard, it is important for them to make sure there are not preventable hazards/dangers their dog can be exposed to.” Because they are naturally inquisitive, dogs can wreak havoc on a backyard, said Randy Schultz, content editor for HomeGardenandHomestead.com. “Some breeds are genetically programmed to dig in the dirt and in flower beds and vegetable gardens. Many dogs, especially puppies and younger dogs, love to bite and eat landscape plants,”he said. “When planning landscaping, owners should remember that many common landscaping plants — oleander and foxglove, for example — can be toxic to pets,” Richter said. “In addition, fertilizers and pesticides may also be dangerous should pets come in contact with them. If pets are in the yard, even temporarily, people should use plants and products that are pet-safe.” “I always recommend creating specific dog-friendly areas in the yard where the family pets can enjoy themselves,” Schultz said. “The plants in these areas need to be safe for dogs, so even if they take a nibble, they won’t be harming themselves.”

— Places

Selecting plants for a dog-friendly yard is critical, Schultz said. Some of the top plants that are dangerous for dogs include: Chrysanthemum Hyacinth Iris Daisy Morning Glory Daffodil Azalea Lily of the Valley Carnation Hydrangea Geranium Begonia Tomato plants Parsley Aloe Vera Peony Boxwood Lavender Use these dog-safe plants instead: Daylilies Camellias Dill Marigolds Snapdragons Fuchsias Magnolia bushes Thyme Basil Rosemary Heuchera (Coral Bells) Sunflowers Crape Myrtle Zinnias

More difficult is finding a place to live, which is not depicted in the happy stories shown on television. “The big question is, where are you going to park it?”he said. Some areas of the country are more accepting, such as rural areas. Other parts will not allow tiny homes, which often leads owners to “live under the radar,” not acquiring the necessary housing permits and other paperwork, Louche said. Using tiny

Winter is coming. Two experts, a home builder and a home inspector, share their tips on getting ready.

written report and sit down with their clients to explain the findings from the inspection clearly. Barrett also often includes a“honey-dolist of nuisance items a home buyer may want to keep in mind after purchase. McCurn and Barrett suggest focusing on heating systems and potential water damage first.

Tips for new-home construction Of utmost importance is choosing the right heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system. Manor House Builders uses Carrier electric heat-pump systems as the primary choice for heating and cooling, with a propane gas furnace as a secondary heating system. McCurn recommends that new homeowners plan on buying a system rated to cover the entire square footage of the house, including parts that might be unfinished, like the basement. That way, if the homeowners decide to finish the basement at a later date, there is no need to remove and replace the existing HVAC system. She also recommends installing a humidifier and air purifier that work in combination with the HVAC system. Concrete can crack under very dry conditions. A humidifier will prevent excessive drying of the drywall, extending the life of the home and reducing energy costs. It is more efficient to install the right HVAC system, humidifier and air purifier when building the home because the cost is spread out over the lifetime of the mortgage, and the home is more comfortable in which to live. McCurn advises paying special attention to the dampeners on supply and return vents throughout the home as a way to reduce energy costs. Dampeners should also be adjusted to direct air flow, depending on the season. Open the lower registers and close the top ones in winter, and reverse the process for the summer. That process could be done on daylight-saving time days, along with changing clocks and replacing batteries in smoke alarms. Replacing air filters frequently is another way to reduce energy costs. McCurn changes the air filter on a heat pump every 30 to 60 days, even if the manufacturer’s recommendation is to change it every 90 days. Heat rises, so McCurn also suggests creating two temperaAn interior shut off valve for an outdoor spigot should be part of a home winterization plan.

Thermal insulated windows with argon gas between panes also are standard in homes constructed by Manor House Builders. Another consideration is the style of window used. Double-hung windows are less energy-efficient than single-hung windows. Manor House Builders also uses Energy Star-certified appliances in all new homes.

fore the cold weather sets in. Ensuring a proper caulking seal is the key to preventing moisture penetration into walls where wood deterioration and mold can form. Seal any leaks using a flexible caulk that will expand and contract with the change in temperatures. This will protect the home from weather and reduce energy costs. Having the sealant around roof vents and chimneys regularly inspected is also important to make sure moisture stays out of the home. Check the condition of the roof coverings as well. Verifying the integrity of the weather stripping around doors is often neglected by most homeowners.

Other tips for preparing for winter Barrett says the best location to look at when judging the quality and value of a home is the basement. The foundation supports the entire structure so it is critical to verify the integrity of the house foundation, especially in older homes. Barrett says that storm water runoff from landscape, sidewalks and patios pitched towards the house foundation contribute to wet basements and cause deterioration (cracking and shifting) of masonry foundations over time. Ensuring proper gutter guards are installed is very helpful but also requires routine inspection as they often dislodge. All gutter downspout discharges and sump pump drains must be extended at least 6 feet away from the house foundation. Assuring that water does not run from downspouts and drains over sidewalks and driveways helps to prevent slipping hazards during freezing temperatures. Manor House Builders ties the sump pump to a drain in the basement exit/walkout. In Manor House homes, the sump pumps drains to an underground tile that moves water away from the entire perimeter of the foundation. For optimal protection against freezing in winter, Manor House Builders provides a shut-off valve for every faucet in the home. The shut-off valves are easily accessible. Even though the basement plumbing is usually behind drywall, the basement water shut-off valve is provided either in the garage or under the kitchen sink, so it can be reached quickly. For homes that are unused in the winter, McCurn
