t’s been said that if you want to share some information with someone, it’s best to convey that idea by telling a story. Plato, one of the greatest philosophers of all time, believed storytelling was fundamental to preparing leaders to perform their role in the ideal state. He recognized the key role stories play in shaping cultures, promoting desirable behaviors and inspiring action. You often hear us at the Chamber talking about the importance of community, the value in being part of our

membership organization, and the power of shopping locally. But it’s one thing to hear it, and another to read a story about the power of connection. That’s what we want to convey in the 2020 edition of our membership directory and community profile. We took a look at some of the connections between our members and realized how interconnected we really are. e all need transportation. In Greencastle, we have several places to go to pick out the ideal transportation. Whether you are looking for a used car, a new car, a red car or a blue car, you don’t have to leave the city limits to find what you seek. After shopping around, you finally settle on a nice Chevy from Blaise Alexander Chevrolet. Though the price was right, you decide to finance the loan through your local credit union (in this case 1st Ed Credit Union) because the terms were great. You can’t drive the car, though, until it’s insured, so you visit your friendly insurance agent and protect your investment. Saving so much money means you have some extra bucks in your pocket, so you treat the family to a nice meal at the John Allison Public House

and then go watch the Hagerstown Suns play baseball. Cars can have a long-storied life and yours is no different. After several years, despite keeping your car in tiptop shape at your trustworthy local mechanic, Majestic Motors, you hit a deer on the way home one night. Despite a great repair job at Todd Auto Body Shop, you decide it’s time to sell the car to a local high school student in need of local transportation. You visit Greencastle Notary Services, transfer the title, and feel good that your sale will enable a young student to get back and forth to his job at Mikie’s Ice Cream Shop and his classes at Penn State Mont Alto where he is studying to be a nurse. When he graduates, he goes to work at WellSpan Health and by now he needs a new car and so the cycle continues….

We can’t always know the extent of our reach, but we know when it’s working. A True Story of the

Power of Chamber Connections

hat does an accounting firm, two insurance agents, a church, the Boy Scouts, a car dealer, an attorney, a local Chamber of Commerce and some enthusiastic holiday decorators have in common with a local food pantry? A community of course! It surprises a lot of people to learn that nearly 40% of our members are non-profit organizations. With the word ‘commerce’ in our title, many naturally assume we are all business. We are. But part of business is making connections, and what follows is a true tale of the power of connections in a community. The local Greencastle-Antrim Food Pantry was started in 1984 as a mission of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church. Over the years, the number of families served increased so significantly, it was decided that the organization needed to change to meet the growing need. In 2016, the pantry was incorporated as Greencastle-Antrim Food Pantry and was granted a 501c3 status with the help of local attorney Ed Wine. Though still housed in the basement of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, the Board of Directors includes members from many churches in the community. Though incorporated, the pantry still relies heavily on volunteers to meet its mission, and the generosity of the community to support the ongoing challenges

of feeding those in need. So, an investment in our Chamber (reasonable though it is) was not taken lightly. But the Board of Directors decided in 2018 to join the Chamber in the hopes that the publicity and networking we can provide would help them grow. Has it worked? For the third year in a row, the Chamber presented the food pantry with a check with monies raised through our Heritage Christmas Light It Up contest which was sponsored this year greencastlepachamber.org

by our local State Farm agents. When we presented the check this year, Barbara Grane of the food pantry shared that because of the connections made through the Chamber, many have helped them out, including SEK with tax preparation, The Right Car with donations, Boy Scout Troop 99 by doing some heavy lifting of cases of canned food. And that’s just the beginning. We can’t always know the extent of our reach, but we know when it’s working. Greencastle Living | 11

e hear it all the time – Greencastle is a great place to live and raise a family. Whether you’ve lived here your entire life, or been transplanted here for other reasons, there is much to love about our little town. What follows is a fictional story of a house in Greencastle and the community connections that it provides. Once upon a time there was a little house. It was more than just four walls and a floor. It was a home – a quaint, family home for four with the distinction of being located in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The Green family that lived in this house enjoyed their community – swinging on the swings in the summer at Jerome King Playground, kicking through the leaves in the fall to visit Lilian Besore Library to attend storytime, and strolling to the Square in the winter to for the annual tree lighting ceremony. When the mom or dad needed new contacts, they would visit Greencastle Eye Care Center; when the little boy needed a haircut, they’d stop in to see Nick at The Dapper House Barbershop; and when the little girl needed braces, Drake’s Orthodontist was a block away. As the family grew, they burst the seams of their little house and knew it was time for a larger place. The parents chose one of Greencastle’s talented real estate agents and

soon purchased another home. Celebrations were in order! So, off they went to Vinnie’s on 11, enjoying their favorite pizza and pasta to fill up before the work of moving into their new home began. There’s a lot of logistics to moving a family, but Greencastle has the people and businesses to make it easy. To protect their home, the Greens set up homeowners’ insurance with Bell Insurance, transferred the West Penn Power electrical service into their name, scheduled the driveway to be sealed by Ganoe Paving, and alerted Waste Management of their new address for garbage service. They had the water softener serviced by Negley’s and the AC checked by Premier HVAC. The interior of the home was not neglected either! New flooring from Henry’s Floor Covering was installed, paint from Ace Hardware was bought, the walls painted by Blue Skies Painting, and accessories from All Things Country and the shop were purchased to decorate the new home. Now the family lives near the Antrim Township Park. They take in afternoon softball games, ride bikes, jog on the walking path, or watch the dogs frolicking at the dog park. To complete their family, the Greens paid a visit to the Antietam Humane Society. They found the perfect pet for the family. The Greens named him Happy!

The (too common) story of a misplaced phone.

e’ve all done it. We’ve all experienced the panic that comes when we discover we have misplaced our phone. Though we dream of disconnecting, the truth is we are tethered to our electronic devices and have been known to waste whole days in pursuit of the lost device. What follows is a fictional account of a day spent in pursuit of the little black box. Oh rats! Where did I leave that phone? Let me think...where did I go today? It’s been a busy day, and I covered a lot of territory. I’ll retrace my steps. I started by dropping off my credit card payment at F&M Trust, but I don’t think I took my phone into the branch. Even though I can bank online, I actually went old school today. OK – not at the bank. Did I leave it when I went into Sunnyway Food for groceries? I had it with me then, because I was checking my grocery list on my notes. But, I remember stuffing it into my coat pocket, and it was there when I cut across the street to the local AC&T for gas. Yes, it was definitely still in my pocket then and I remember using it to take pictures of the ribbon cutting at Rebound Adventure Cycles new location. From there, I zipped over to Lumber Direct for a few household supplies and to Farmer’s Union Co-op for dog food. Could I have left it at one of those? No, I remember that I left it on the car charger while I shopped because I missed a call from Shaun Basalik Edward Jones Financial Advisors reminding me of

my appointment. Did I have it when I went to Sunnyway Diner with Ms. D for lunch? Don’t tell me I left it on the table! And, here I am without a phone to call and ask! Oh, wait! I remember. I used it after lunch to call E.L.M. Department Store to ask how late they were open, and I had it with me when the clerk at ELM Shoes was sizing Ms. D. for her new loafers. They were so patient and kind with her. Let’s see, did I have it with me when we stopped by the book sale at Trinity Lutheran Church? Imagine it lost among all those books. Ugh. Yep, that’s where I left it. I’m sure! I was juggling the armload of books and put it down when a quinoa recipe book caught my eye. Well, I guess I’ll get back in the car and head over there. Maybe someone found it. Indeed! Someone turned it in. I’m lucky I live in Greencastle where people are honest! In the meantime, I received a text from Kuddle Kennels reminding me to bring the dog’s paperwork when I drop her off for the weekend and another from The Jewelry Shop telling me my watch is ready for pickup. It’s been a long day, I think I’ll treat myself to takeout. The only question is, what am I in the mood for? Should I stop by Brother’s Pizza for take-out? Or I could call Tony’s Pizza, or Mi Tierra Linda, or even El Sombrero. Now that I’ve got my phone back, all their numbers are right here at my fingertips...right here in my hand. At least for now.
