Phone rings ... Caller: Hello. This is Joe McLoot from Joe’s Deep Sea Treasure Retrievers. A friend of mine told me that I should check into becoming a member of the Chamber. Can you tell me about the benefits of joining the Chamber? Valerie at the Chamber: Sure, Joe! You’ve called the right place and at the right time. We’ve just published a directory, The Chamber Advantage, and it’s all about this very thing! You’ll find in the pages of this directory not only a listing of Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce (G-ACC) members, but you’ll read about some of the major benefits of Chamber membership. For instance, the Chamber offers many promotional advantages. From ribbon cuttings to social media shares, as well as on-air, on-line or print promos, the Chamber can help share your business, your special events or milestones. If you’re planning to settle your business in Greencastle (which may not be the best fit for deep sea treasure retrieving) you’ll find that Chamber membership offers many community advantages. You can contribute to the community by participating in volunteer projects organized by the Chamber or in Chamber fundraising events that generate money for community organizations. but the Chamber offers several legislative advantages for our members. We are a great resource to connect you with our local representatives, as well as the PA Chamber of Business and Industry or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. romotional opportunities abound for members of the G-ACC! The Chamber announces member milestones, shares member events and champions community vitality through a variety of promotional channels. Foremost is the G-ACC member online listing. In October 2020, the G-ACC debuted a fresh website (www.GreencastlePaChamber.org) designed by CermakTech. The Chamber knows many members struggle to market their business, but exposure on the web is essential for making a business accessible. Even Mike Cermak, owner of CermakTech, relates that, “Getting out there, selling my business and marketing doesn’t come naturally to me.” The Chamber helps members bridge that gap. The new site, with fresh graphics and an online payment portal, makes G-ACC member information readily available. Now mobile friendly, the site includes member information, a calendar of events and valuable links on up-to-date legislation. Another promotional opportunity for G-ACC members is the TriState Business Report, hosted by Patrick Ryan, General Manager of NewsTalk 103.7 FM. The G-ACC chats with Ryan and Chamber members about what makes them tick and what makes them excited to be in business. “I learn alongside the audience,” said Ryan. “I’m counting on other business people listening to the show to learn what the guests are doing successfully.” In addition to the member getting the benefit of the radio broadcast, they receive a link to share the interview on their own media channels. Everything from the annual Downtown & Around Town Open House in November to an endof-summer peach festival, the Chamber passes the word, reaching a wide range of public viewers and potential attendees. Sharing member events is also a passion of the G-ACC. Ribbon cuttings come in all sizes, but are always a highlight for members. “Despite the rough economic storm, we’ve had a number of members celebrate ribbon cuttings this year,” related Chamber Director Valerie Meyers. “It’s energizing to interact with these entrepreneurs!” Among new businesses welcomed this year is Teal Blossom Boutique, whose ribbon cutting, complete with confetti and champagne, brought a new apparel retailer to

the Square. On the smaller side, The Center of Balance, LLC, cut the ribbon for their new Reflexology Walk, a meandering walkway with groupings of stones placed strategically to work different parts of the foot. The Center of Balance co-owner Louise Kemper relates, “We tell everybody about the Chamber because the benefits are so great!”

he mission of the G-ACC is two-fold: “...to help members thrive by promoting economic prosperity and community vitality.” These two aspects, economic prosperity and community vitality, are like mirrors facing each other creating an infinite reflection. Members of the Chamber contribute to the G-A community and the community reciprocates to Chamber members.

For example, when WellSpan Health reached out to the Chamber to spread the word about a fundraising effort for COVID needs, the Chamber published an email to its members and the community with the fantastic result of raising $50,000! “WellSpan Health values our longstanding relationship with the local chambers of commerce,” related Joel Zullinger, Chair of the Summit Health Foundation Board of Directors. “At a time when our community needed it most, the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber eagerly provided a platform to ask for help. We’re grateful to the Chamber and its members for their support in bringing recuperative and remote care to Franklin County patients adversely affected by COVID-19.” The Greencastle-Antrim Food Pantry also knows the value of collaborating with the Chamber to support its work of meeting the food insecurity needs in the G-A community. With the number of clients being served during the pandemic increasing by 25 percent, “Being a member of the Chamber of Commerce really helped us broaden our scope and visibility,” said Barbara Grane, president of the board of directors for the pantry. Besides sharing the food pantry’s distribution schedule and list of monthly needs, the Chamber organized a fundraising program for the pantry in conjunction with the seasonal Heritage Christmas Light It Up Contest. Community members decorated the outside of their homes and viewers then voted for their favorite

display by donating $1.00 for each vote to the G-A Food Pantry. This year’s generous donation of over $1,000 was used by the Food Pantry to purchase perishable food items, household cleaning supplies and grocery staples, including, yes!, even toilet paper! Another expression of the reciprocal relationship between the G-A community with the Chamber and its members is the overwhelmingly successful Hometown Hero Banner project. In partnership with the V.F.W. Post 6319 and the American Legion, the Hometown Hero Banner Project resulted in over 175 military heroes, from WWI to the present, being honored with personalized banners hung on the main streets of the Borough. The professionals at FastSIGNS designed and produced the banners while the Public Works team at the Borough of Greencastle equipped the poles and hung the banners. Most recently when it came time to bring the banners down for the season, the G-ASD High School’s Rho Kappa Social Studies National Honor Society cleaned and organized the banners in preparation for their redeployment in the spring. These partnerships provide just a sampling of how G-ACC members reflect a generosity of heart and commitment to the community and how the G-A community duplicates the reflection by supporting the G-ACC membership. Indeed, it makes for a pretty picture that goes on, and on, and on, and on, and….

aist-high, perhaps neck-high, levels of legislation in a swirling pandemic flood aren’t easy for Chamber members to navigate while running a business. That’s when Chamber membership serves as a buoy, providing a ballast in the storm, and a flashing beacon for reference. With daily, sometimes hourly, mandates streaming downhill, the G-ACC keeps its members up to date with the deluge of regulations and information. Most recently, the Chamber has helped members navigate COVID business regulations, PPP Loan applications and local grant opportunities. Chamber members have benefitted from the close connection between the Chamber and local business development partners such as the Shippensburg University Small Business Development Center, a facet of the Small Business Administration, which administers PPP loans through local financial institutions. As with most businesses in 2020, the Chamber adapted its networking opportunities, and though member events have been modified, opportunities to mingle with other members remained a solid benefit of Chamber membership. For example, the annual Franklin County Area Development Corporation update sponsored by F&M Trust and offered by FCADC President Mike Ross transitioned to a hybrid event. Those interested in hearing Ross in person stopped by the Chamber to enjoy refreshments and some after-presentation networking, while those interested in maintaining social distance connected remotely. Ingenuity in coping with the demands of social distancing played out at the Chamber’s annual membership meeting. Typically offered as a fullcourse banquet, this year’s event, sponsored by 1st Ed Credit Union, transitioned into a late afternoon autumn picnic held at the Antrim Township Park. Set up under the large pavilion, complete with lemonade and coleslaw, members were able to socialize safely outdoors. Beginning with the Pledge offered by greencastlepachamber.org

Eagle Scout candidate Michael Gratton, the evening continued with updates from a number of VIP’s, including Representative Paul Schemel, FCADC President Mike Ross, and Township Supervisor Brad Graham. These and other Chamber networking events provide the chance to connect with old friends, meet new business partners and glean up-to-date information on current events. And the perfect proportion of fluids and fuel energizing all the action? Similarly, there’s great reward in having a Chamber event come to life. The cogs and wheels of many months’ planning. The spark and spirit of many hands working. And the funds and financing of members supporting. Events, such as the annual golf tournament, the Chamber’s annual meeting and Heritage Christmas, offer multiple opportunities for Chamber members to spotlight their businesses through signage, online marketing, print and radio media, all the while generating community vibrancy and goodwill. For 30-plus years, the Chamber has hosted its annual golf outing. Sponsored in main part by Craig, Friedly Potter & Moore, the event brings out players and fans alike. The event showcases several Chamber members through special sponsorships (cart, putting green and closest to the pin), hole sponsorships and raffle prize donations. The spotlight shines on members through pre-event advertising, onsite interaction and takeaway prizes. It’s always a win for players and sponsors alike! Another event series running from spring until early fall and showcasing G-ACC members is the Chamber’s seasonal marketplace, “3rd Saturdays in the Square.” Held from May through September, the event is sponsored by WestPenn Power and converges food trucks, crafters and artisans for community enjoyment while drawing traffic to Greencastle’s downtown businesses.
