One of the most popular additions to last year’s Decatur Celebration proved to be the first-ever Heinkel’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Large crowds gathered in the center of William St. to see competitors, packed on the Spotlight Stage, devour as many Heinkel wieners as they could in 10 minutes. The contestants battled near 100-degree temperatures to crown a winner, John Palmgren of Peoria, who ate 14 wieners in the allotted time to win the $500 first prize. Several others were overcome by the heat and experienced what competitive eaters refer to as onstage “reversals of fortune.” Still, fourthgeneration meatpacker Wes Heinkel called the contest a great success. “It was successful beyond what I anticipated, honestly,” he said. “I knew it had potential, but you want to keep your expectations conservative. We were jumping into the unknown, not knowing if anybody was going to care. Now, the sky is the limit with it, I think.”
That definitely seems to be the case for the competition at the 2013 Decatur Celebration. Acknowledging the fact that the former stage was too small to hold all
the competitors, the contest has been moved to the larger Funfest Stage outside the Decatur Public Library. There is also room for a much larger crowd to take in the two contests. The first will again feature local media celebrity competitors, and the second is the “semi-pro” contest for cash and prize packages. “The stage held us back last year; it was always my intention to have all the finalists go at once,” Heinkel said. “This year that will be fixed. I also think I will have an opportunity to surprise people with a guest visitor for the celebrity contest, but I’m playing that one pretty close to the chest.”
The preliminary eat-off has already been conducted, with Chicagoan Frank Watt leading the new pack of 10 eaters with a total of 16 wieners, two more than last year’s champion. Wes Heinkel sees it all as part of his continued attempt to reintroduce the brand to a younger generation of Decatur residents.
“The reality is, we weren’t really in the wiener business in Decatur before, and that changed the game,” he said. “Now if you go to a Kroger or a County Market in a 90-mile radius, you’re going to find them. That was a big deal for us.”

3D Chalk Art
Chicago Artist, Adam Fabianski of Lucid Chalk
You won’t believe your eyes when you reach the corner of North & Water Streets this year and see that the street has been transformed in to a swimming pool with a menacing octopus peeking out. But whatever you do, don’t jump in the pool because it’s all an illusion! Chicago Artist, Adam Fabianski of Lucid Chalk, and his partners, bring realty defying 3D chalk art to this year’s festival. The design will be drawn on Friday and Saturday with expected completion on Saturday evening – and then the fun begins. The art piece will include interactive photo opportunities, where if you pose in just the right place, you could fool your friends into thinking you are in an actual swimming pool being attacked by an octopus.

What’s New
Wine Garden Now in its third year, wine enthusiasts have found their home at Decatur Celebration, nestled in the charm of Merchant Street. The Wine Garden offers a relaxing boutique atmosphere with plenty of seating and the smooth sounds of blues music playing on the nearby Cabaret Stage. This year wine selections are expanded to include wines from across the country and around the world with representations from Lyn-Nita Vineyard (Elkville, IL), Joel Gott (California/Oregon), O Wines/Columbia Crest (Washington), Menage/Folie A Deux (California), and Graffigna/Brancott (Argentina/New Zealand). The Back Lot, Film Festival Since Lori Sturgill took over as Decatur Celebration’s producer in 2011, The Back Lot section of the festival has been one of her signature contributions. Located at the festival’s northwest point, at the corner of Water and North St., The Back Lot Stage is typically focused on independent musicians, rising local stars and generally young performers who may not fit in on the other stages. This year, that includes former “American Idol” contestant Casey Abrams, who has gone his own way since his appearance on the show’s 10th season, exploring new music in pop, rock and jazz. “He’s an indie guy still, and we decided to put him there because the concept is to showcase emerging music artists,” Sturgill said. “I still see him as a pure artist. We’re also having an indie rock band called Green Tea from Wisconsin that fans of emerging music should definitely check out.”
Other bands appearing on The Back Lot Stage include indie rockers O3, along with Effingham’s Matt Carter Band. But music isn’t the only focus of The Back Lot. For the last three years it has also played host to Land of Lincoln Credit Union’s 21 Film Project, the local film festival that has made Celebration its home. This year’s awards ceremony will again be held Friday night at the Decatur Civic Center, and films will be screened throughout the weekend in an airconditioned tent next to The Back Lot. Several new features will be added to the tent, however. “At different intervals throughout the day, they will be playing the winning films from all six years of the festival,” Sturgill said. “They’ll also be doing something different this year, because on Saturday night they’ll be showing a mainstream movie as well, with a screening of ‘Back to the Future.’ ”
This year’s Back Lot will also feature some returning art galleries and live art demonstrations from local artists, as well as the return of the craft beer booth operated by McGorray’s Golf and Grille. Another new addition is 3D chalk artist Adam Fabianski, who will be working on an interactive display throughout the weekend. “The chalk art he does on the street, if you catch it at the right angle it looks completely three dimensional,” Sturgill said. “He’ll be doing one of a swimming pool with a diving board, and you’ll be able to pose for a great photo op.”
Theatre 7 50th Anniversary Decatur Celebration has always been more strongly associated with music than theater, but the 2013 festival will feature and commemorate Decatur’s longest-running band of amateur thespians. Members of Theatre 7 will be on the Celebration grounds throughout the festival, drawing attention to the organization’s upcoming 50th anniversary season. The crowds walking the streets of downtown Decatur will be able to participate for themselves in a variety of activities.
“They’re doing several different things, starting with one called the ‘golden anniversary street piano,’ ” Celebration producer Lori Sturgill said. “It’s a real piano, painted gold, and anyone who wants to play for the crowd walking by is welcome. There will actually be two of these pianos, one at The Back Lot and one outside the Theatre 7 building downtown. It’s an idea that originated from one of our chairmen who vacationed in Paris, and while he was there he saw people playing these public pianos and attracting small crowds.”
That’s just for starters, though. Theatre 7 president Dreux Lewandowski said the most noticeable feature will be the “improv mob” that will roam the Celebration grounds, interacting with the crowd. The organization is looking for a large group of volunteers who will download an MP3 from the Celebration website. During the festival, at an agreedupon time, these volunteers will listen to the MP3 on headphones and receive instructions on how to behave and interact with the crowd. “The instructions will tell them what they’re going to say, what they’re going to do physically,” Lewandowski said. “For instance, the instructions could say ‘Follow the nearest person without earbuds,’ so you could have one person with a crowd of 50 actors following him down the street. We’re
definitely going to engage the crowd and it will kind of be the lead-in to one of the main stage acts. Our ambitious target is to recruit about 100 people who want to participate.”
Lewandowski described some of the ideas as embracing “spontaneity and immediacy” to help the organization appeal to younger audiences and a changing culture.
“We have a very loyal following of mature audiences, but the future of the theater is going to be in developing new audiences, volunteers and actors, getting them involved in all aspects of community theater,” he said. “Ultimately the features here are meant to say that theater is for everybody and you can do it without giving a big time commitment.” Celebration Recycling Celebration’s recycling program and its accompanying “Green Team” will return for a third year in 2013, with organizer Debra Hughes-Garrett saying the group has learned and adapted its methods well since it first implemented the recycling initiative at the 2011 event.
“Well, our goal last year was to increase recycling and we did accomplish that by a modest amount,” said Garrett, the director of Macon County Environmental Management. “It went much more smoothly overall because we have a better idea of where the containers are needed and how many volunteers we need. We were able to collect 2,380 pounds of recycled materials during the festival.” The biggest change last year was the addition of “roll-off” containers for cardboard from Veolia Environmental, now Advanced Disposal. These bins allowed vendors to more easily dispose of their recyclables properly instead of just tossing them in the trash. The bins will return with slightly altered strategic placements this year. Volunteers of the Green Team will once again be seen zipping around the festival on golf carts, collecting cardboard from vendors and emptying recycling containers. “The Green Team volunteers are very committed to this,” Garrett said as the festival wrapped up last year. “They come here not to get community service hours but because they’re committed to recycling, even in this heat. I think the initiative is appreciated by a lot of people down at the festival. We know that people appreciate having the option because they stop us on the street and tell us so.”
Celebration producer Lori Sturgill agreed with this assessment and points to the recycling
initiative as one of the bright spots of her time with the festival since taking over for the event’s founder, Fred Puglia.
“I think the program’s going great,” she said. “Just as recycling in our community as a whole is being very well-received, doing it at the festival raises the local consciousness of its importance.”

CeCe Frey The city of Decatur rushed to the phones in numbers this fall to vote for the Decatur native, CeCe Frey, on Season Two of the X Factor. Although America was just being introduced to CeCe’s fierce attitude and big voice, she was already a star in Decatur. Locals jammed out to her hit single, “Animals,” on Y103. Before the show, she wrote “Animals” and a number of other hit songs with her band, Volholla. CeCe and the rest of Volholla have performed in many Decatur bars and even in past Celebrations. CeCe fought her way to the top six of the X Factor and built a large fan base along the way. Over 400,000 devoted fans, or what CeCe calls her “warriors,” follow her on Twitter. Hundreds of girls painted cheetah spots on their faces to copy CeCe’s famous look. Although CeCe has fans all over the world, she still makes several appearances around Decatur on her visits back home. We are excited to give CeCe a warm welcome home in this year’s parade. Gracia Harrison Gracia Harrison brought some classic country to Season Three of the The Voice as she sang “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” an old country favorite. Although Gracia chose to join country star Blake Shelton’s team, the other coaches fought hard to get her to sway from her country roots and pick their teams. Gracia Harrison knows how to stick to her Central Illinois roots. Gracia makes many trips back to her home in Virden, Illinois. She performs all over Central Illinois and recently opened for Trace Adkins at the Sangamon County Fair. Country fans will love Gracia Harrison’s booming voice and classic twang in this year’s Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade. Maroa-Forsyth Varsity Football Team Herald & Review Macon County Coach of the Year Coach Josh Jostess’ message to the Maroa-Forsyth’s varsity Trojans before each game: “Don’t flinch!” The team uses this phrase as their motto, reminding them to play fearlessly on the field. Many of the boys dreamed of taking home the State Championship title since the team won five years ago. They came close many times, winning runner-up four years since then. However, the boys finally got their satisfaction by winning the Class 1A State Championship in Champaign this year after an epic fourth quarter comeback to overcome the Blackhawks of Stockton. Led by 2012 Class 1A IHSA All-State, All-Okaw and All-County linebacker Curt Beckman and Herald & Review Macon County Player of the Year, Class 1A Championship Game MVP quarterback Jack Hockaday, this championship is the mark of hard work, dedication, and great teamwork. The Maroa-Forsyth Trojans have a reputation for consistent success, winning the Okaw Valley Conference Championship for 8 consecutive years.
